2019 Chevrolet Malibu problems

The Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size car manufactured and marketed by Chevrolet from model years 1964–1983 and since 1997. The Malibu began as a trim-level of the Chevrolet Chevelle, becoming its own model line in 1978. Originally a rear-wheel drive intermediate, GM revived the Malibu nameplate as a front-wheel-drive car in 1997.
Named after the coastal community of Malibu, California, the Malibu was marketed primarily in North America, with the eighth generation introduced globally. It is currently the only sedan offered by Chevrolet in the U.S.
First generation (Chevelle Malibu, 1964)
The first Malibu was a top-line subseries of the mid-sized Chevrolet Chevelle from 1964 to 1972. Malibus were generally available in a full range of bodystyles including a four-door sedan, two-door Sport Coupe hardtop, convertible and two-seat station wagon. Interiors were more lavish than lesser Chevelle 300 and 300 Deluxe models thanks to patterned cloth and vinyl upholstery (all-vinyl in convertibles and station wagons), deep-twist carpeting, deluxe steering wheel and other items. The Malibu SS performance package was available only as a two-door Sport Coupe hardtop or convertible and added bucket seats, center console (with optional four-speed manual or Powerglide transmissions), engine gauges and special wheelcovers, and offered with any six-cylinder or V8 engine offered in other Chevelles - with the top option being a 300 hp (224 kW; 304 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) in 1964.
For 1965, Malibus and other Chevelles received new grilles and revised tail sections and had the exhaust pipes replaced but carried over the same basic styling and bodystyles from 1964. The Malibu and Malibu SS models continued as before with the SS featuring a blacked-out grille and special wheelcovers. Top engine option was now a 350 hp (261 kW; 355 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8. 201 of the 1965 Malibu SS cars got Regular Production Option (RPO) Z16, which include a heavily modified chassis and Chevy's new 375 horsepower 396 cubic inch V8. All were hardtops, although rumors persist that one convertible was built.
The Malibu SS was replaced in 1966 by a new Chevelle SS-396 series that included a big-block 396 cu in (6.5 L) V8 engine (Canadian market did not receive the SS396 but marketed the former Malibu SS nameplate until January 1967 when it was phased out), heavy duty suspension and other performance equipment. Other SS-396 equipment was similar to Malibu Sport Coupes and convertibles including an all-vinyl bench seat. Bucket seats and console with floor shift were now optional on the SS and for 1966 with the SS now denoting a car with a big-block engine, the bucket seats became a new option on the regular Malibu Sport Coupe and convertible, upon which any six-cylinder or small-block V8 could be ordered. Also new for 1966 was the Chevelle Malibu four-door Sport Sedan hardtop. Styling revisions on all 1966 Chevelles including more rounded styling similar to the full-sized Chevrolets with sail panels and tunneled rear windows featured on two-door hardtop coupes.
For 1967, the same assortment of bodystyles were continued with styling changes similar to all other Chevelles including a new grille and revised tail section with taillights that wrapped around to the side. New this year was a Chevelle Malibu Concours station wagon with simulated woodgrain exterior side panel trim. Front disc brakes were a new option along with a stereo 8-track tape player. The same assortment of drivetrains carried over from 1966 with the top 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8 dropped from 350 to 325 hp (261 to 242 kW; 355 to 330 PS).

- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: This is by far the worst car purchase I've ever made. I've had this car for 4 years now and ever since I purchased it, it has given me problems. The car shut down completely at the stop sign or stop light, even when pulling out of the parking spot. Battery replaced, fuel line/pump/gasket replaced, wire fixed, oils and fluids stay up to date, transmission fluid changed, and not one mechanic, not even GM can tell me what the problem is because they don't even know. No codes appear and diagnostics come back fine and clear. Every mechanic has fixed something they've thought could be causing the problem yet the problem still exists. This is a headache to deal with and dangerous for my family and me. This has been the worst experience ever experienced with any vehicle i have owned.

POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-12
- VIN: 1G1ZD5ST7KF
- Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: I have been driving this car for three years, and it performed exceptionally well until Friday, July 12, 2024. While driving on the highway, the "Engine Power Reduced" warning light activated. I pulled over, placed the car in park, waited a few seconds, and restarted the engine, but the issue persisted. Consequently, I took the car to the nearest auto shop, where they identified and repaired a throttle issue. On July 16, 2024, the car's brake system failed, preventing the vehicle from stopping properly. I utilized the emergency brake and once again brought the car to the nearest auto shop. The diagnosis revealed a broken vacuum, which was identified as a manufacturer's defect. My car is currently in the shop for the second repair due to these manufacturing defects, which have incurred significant costs. It raises concerns about the safety and quality of the parts used in the manufacturing process. Why are low-quality components being installed in these vehicles? This poses a serious safety risk.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-09
- VIN: 1G1ZD5ST0KF
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: Vehicle occasionally hesitates to accelerate past 1st or 2nd gear & produces no power until the turbo & gears finally kick in. Has put myself & my passengers (my children) in danger of traffic’s way while trying to merge into traffic from a stop. Have had to pull to the side until the car is able to go past 5-15 miles per hr. Have taken the vehicle for inspection to Chevrolet of Watsonville & the tech there was unable to replicate the issue & was told to take it back when present. The issue recently happened again late evening but then resolved on its own when I planned to take the following morning. The vehicle has horrible MPG ranging from 18-24MPG when the rated MPG is 27-36MPG. I don’t understand how I am supposed to resolve this issue if the problem doesn’t persist when I am able to finally get an appointment for the vehicle to get seen. This issue is very concerning & would like help as I am nearing the manufacturer 100k warranty expiration mileage. Also There are no service lights present on the vehicle.

- Summary: Shift to Park message on dashboard..... After you shift the gear into park position and turn off car, the message comes up "Shift to Park". Car keeps beeping with message on dashboard saying "shift to park". You do not know why this is coming up and beeping. No matter how many times you put in park and turn off car, this message and beeping noise happens saying your car is not in Park position. When you exit the car, the message and beeping continue even after shutting the door. The lights also stay on draining your battery, and you are always left wondering if car is actually in park position. I noticed there are several complaints online concerning this matter with General Motors but when you call the Chevy dealer they continue to act like the are unaware of this issue..... If anyone wishes to contact me regarding this matter I prefer to be reached by email. Thank You.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-13
- VIN: 1G1ZG5ST8KF
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I am making a complaint because there is a major deficiency that has put my safety at risk. The component of the vehicle that has a defect is the transmission. When the car is shifted in drive it will either stall and jerk forward, not jerk forward and not move forward from seconds to minutes at a time, and/or move forward about 50ft and stall again. I was making a right turn on a major road, speed limit being 40 MPH and the vehicle stalled and did not go forward until 20-30 seconds later. Vehicles were able to see me before getting closer and were able to change lanes however this is unacceptable. I had my two year old nephew in the car and this could have been a fatal accident. I have taken it to twice to be repaired and this problem has yet to be a fix. I can get invoices and documents to show the “repairs” however this problem exist and needs an solution.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-01
- VIN: 1G1ZD5ST9KF
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Currently have 109,330 miles on my 2019 Malibu LT It’s very obvious that the transmissions in these cars are no good. My car accelerates slowly whenever it feels like it and entering the highway or any road to be honest, is like jumping off of a plane with no parachute, praying you don’t hit the bottom and die. Its scary! It jerks horribly at times while accelerating (along with slow acceleration). If I push the gas pedal more, the car’s RPMs revs high and the car shoots off like rocket then starts to accelerate slowly seconds after the hard take off. Someone is going to die at the hands of GM because the problem is being ignored! Please help us! Check the vehicles! See what the issue is! It’s not just “something simple”. Yet y’all are constantly rolling these cars out to customers. Feels like robbery!
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-22
- VIN: 1G1ZD5ST9KF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I've had a 2019 Chevrolet Malibu since December 2018. After my last visit to the dealership to have my oil changed (January 22), I began experiencing a "Park to Shift" alert appear after I had shifted the car into park and turned it off. This happened within the first day of having it serviced. Since then it has happened pretty much every time I've driven the car and turned itr off. I'd say it's happening 90% of the time. Sometimes it's resolved if I cut the car back on shift to Drive or Reverse, then back to Park (usually have to do that a few times to get it to stop). Just today, I could not get it to go off while making a quick stop and had to leave the car essentially on while I hopped out. Once, I was able to "jiggle" the gear shift for a few seconds to get it to stop. I don't understand why this is suddenly happening. It was not happening before the visit, although I am aware that it is a known issue - however no recall has been issued. What are my options beyond spending another chunk of money to have this fixed?

- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-20
- VIN: 1G1ZD5ST9KF
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I am having the well known "shift to park" issue. When I put the vehicle in park, I get the error message to "shift to park" even though the vehicle is in park. At this time, I am not able to lock my doors or turn my car off. This happens 3-5 times a week for me. This is a safety issue. I had the entire shifter replaced under warranty in 2021 and now it is happening again and I am going to have to pay for this now since out of warranty. This is not something I have caused and is an error with the vehicle and I consumers should not have to pay for this.

- Summary: IN THE PAST WEEK, I TRIED TURNING OFF MY VEHICLE, BUT RECEIVED THE MESSAGE "SHIFT TO PARK". THIS HAS HAPPENED THREE TIMES, THUS FAR (11/6, 11/8, 11/13). THE CAR IS ALREADY IN PARK, BUT WON'T TURN OFF, UNLESS I CONTINUALLY SHIFT, OR RESTART THE CAR SEVERAL TIMES, OTHERWISE, IT CONTINUES TO RUN WITH THE MESSAGE DISPLAYED. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS, IT FINALLY TURNS OFF. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY HORRIFYING! IS THIS A SAFETY ISSUE, AND IF, SO, IS GM ADDRESSING THIS ISSUE AND NOTIFYING OWNERS OF THIS PROBLEM AND WHAT PROCEDURES TO TAKE? I HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY RECALL NOTICE REGARDING THIS PROBLEM. IS MY CAR SAFE TO DRIVE? IS THIS SOMETHING THE DEALERSHIP CAN ADDRESS? I DO NOT WANT TO BE SOMEWHERE AND NOT BE ABLE TO START MY CAR. Hello! I rented this car for a week and drove both locally and on the highway in Las Vegas and Grand Canyon. I found the performance to be quite smooth, and while it may not be fair to compare it to my luxury Toyota Avalon with more leg room and a comfortable ride, it still performed well and was able to easily pass and provide a smooth ride in both city and highway driving. The engine noise was minimal, even at high RPMs when climbing hills at over 70mph, which was impressive for a 1.5 liter engine. Additionally, the gas mileage was great for my road trip with 4 family members. I had no issues connecting my iPhone to the Car Play for GPS use. While the car is new and I cannot yet rate its reliability, I am considering getting one for my son for his college. Thank you for the opportunity to share my experience!
-
It was great buying this car, just what I needed! And you guys made it so simple. Thank you!
-
The great thing about this car is that it doesn't draw too much attention to itself, it's not marketed as a performance car, and it breaks away with a snap as the tires bite into the road. It's agile, comfortable, and has a classy appearance.
-
Hey there! I just wanted to let you know that this particular model isn't available at any of our dealerships. I didn't even know it existed myself, so I can understand your surprise!
-
Our family has had several great experiences with this across three generations.

I purchased a 2019 Malibu LT in October of 2019 and initially felt like I got a good deal. The car was very fuel efficient, achieving an impressive 38 MPG on the highway. However, in February 2020, I began to notice a musty smell and the windows would fog up on the inside while driving. Upon further inspection, I discovered that items in the trunk had mold on them and the carpet was extremely wet. I looked where the spare tire was kept and found 1

I have owned three Malibus, an 08, 15, and 18. The 08 was purchased used and lasted me 8 years without any issues. The 15 was my favorite, bought new and driven for 80k miles without any problems. However, the 18 has been a disappointment. The technology is a step back from the 15 and I have experienced acceleration issues. Despite taking it to the dealer, they were unable to find any warning lights or issues. This is a major hazard when merging onto highways. I hope GM acknowledges and addresses these issues.

Be cautious with this car. When the Traction Control is activated, the screen displays a notice that reads 'ENGINE POWER IS REDUCED'. This means that you are in a lower gear than usual and cannot accelerate above 10-15 miles per hour. To get out of this driving mode, you have to pull over, turn off the motor for 15 to 30 seconds, and then restart the car. After restarting, the check engine symbol may come on for 24 hours, but it will reset and disappear if there is nothing wrong. I had a true experience where I turned right onto a freeway ramp and the Traction Control kicked in for no reason. I was in a low gear on the ramp, cars were behind me, and I could not go faster than 15 mph. I entered the freeway slowly and almost had an encounter with an 18-wheeler before I could pull onto the freeway shoulder, turn off the motor, and let the system reset. Additionally, there is a major issue with the rear braking mechanisms. They are noisy and there is a lag time after I remove my foot from the brake pedal. Despite these issues, this is such an attractive car, both inside and out, but unfortunately, it cannot be in my barn.

I've had the pleasure of driving this vehicle as a rental and have also ridden in several Uber's/Lyfts that were the same make and model. I found them to be quite comfortable, with ample space and sufficient power. The model I drove had a start/stop feature that required turning off every time the car was started, but I'm sure that would become routine if I owned the car. I was delighted to find that the model I drove came equipped with Apple CarPlay, which is a tech feature that I absolutely adore. Unfortunately, the panoramic sunroof was not included in the model I drove, but I can imagine it would be a highly desirable feature if I were to own the vehicle. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my two weeks with the car, although I do have some concerns about its predicted reliability over time.
