2013 Chevrolet Malibu problems

The Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size car manufactured and marketed by Chevrolet from model years 1964–1983 and since 1997. The Malibu began as a trim-level of the Chevrolet Chevelle, becoming its own model line in 1978. Originally a rear-wheel drive intermediate, GM revived the Malibu nameplate as a front-wheel-drive car in 1997.

Named after the coastal community of Malibu, California, the Malibu was marketed primarily in North America, with the eighth generation introduced globally. It is currently the only sedan offered by Chevrolet in the U.S.

First generation (Chevelle Malibu, 1964)

The first Malibu was a top-line subseries of the mid-sized Chevrolet Chevelle from 1964 to 1972. Malibus were generally available in a full range of bodystyles including a four-door sedan, two-door Sport Coupe hardtop, convertible and two-seat station wagon. Interiors were more lavish than lesser Chevelle 300 and 300 Deluxe models thanks to patterned cloth and vinyl upholstery (all-vinyl in convertibles and station wagons), deep-twist carpeting, deluxe steering wheel and other items. The Malibu SS performance package was available only as a two-door Sport Coupe hardtop or convertible and added bucket seats, center console (with optional four-speed manual or Powerglide transmissions), engine gauges and special wheelcovers, and offered with any six-cylinder or V8 engine offered in other Chevelles - with the top option being a 300 hp (224 kW; 304 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) in 1964.

For 1965, Malibus and other Chevelles received new grilles and revised tail sections and had the exhaust pipes replaced but carried over the same basic styling and bodystyles from 1964. The Malibu and Malibu SS models continued as before with the SS featuring a blacked-out grille and special wheelcovers. Top engine option was now a 350 hp (261 kW; 355 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8. 201 of the 1965 Malibu SS cars got Regular Production Option (RPO) Z16, which include a heavily modified chassis and Chevy's new 375 horsepower 396 cubic inch V8. All were hardtops, although rumors persist that one convertible was built.

The Malibu SS was replaced in 1966 by a new Chevelle SS-396 series that included a big-block 396 cu in (6.5 L) V8 engine (Canadian market did not receive the SS396 but marketed the former Malibu SS nameplate until January 1967 when it was phased out), heavy duty suspension and other performance equipment. Other SS-396 equipment was similar to Malibu Sport Coupes and convertibles including an all-vinyl bench seat. Bucket seats and console with floor shift were now optional on the SS and for 1966 with the SS now denoting a car with a big-block engine, the bucket seats became a new option on the regular Malibu Sport Coupe and convertible, upon which any six-cylinder or small-block V8 could be ordered. Also new for 1966 was the Chevelle Malibu four-door Sport Sedan hardtop. Styling revisions on all 1966 Chevelles including more rounded styling similar to the full-sized Chevrolets with sail panels and tunneled rear windows featured on two-door hardtop coupes.

For 1967, the same assortment of bodystyles were continued with styling changes similar to all other Chevelles including a new grille and revised tail section with taillights that wrapped around to the side. New this year was a Chevelle Malibu Concours station wagon with simulated woodgrain exterior side panel trim. Front disc brakes were a new option along with a stereo 8-track tape player. The same assortment of drivetrains carried over from 1966 with the top 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8 dropped from 350 to 325 hp (261 to 242 kW; 355 to 330 PS).

SUSPENSION,WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-04
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1G11C5SA3DF
  • Components: SUSPENSION,WHEELS
  • Summary: While driving my vehicle the rear toe link broke leaving me stranded on the side of the road. With no dealers close I replaced the passenger rear toe link to get the car mobile again. Once that was done I called the dealer to setup an appointment to do the recall repair. After dropping the car off at the dealer I received a call back stating that I would need to replace my OEM lug nuts at an inflated dealer price in order for them to do the repair. My issue is that these OEM lug nuts should also be included in the recall because I've done nothing to create an issue with the lug nuts. Swelling lug nuts is a major ongoing issue among the big 3 automakers and this should be corrected. Allowing the companies to sell cars with low quality lug nuts is insane. Dealers thinking that customers should pay for a flaw in their own design of the lug nuts before they will do any repairs is even more insane. How my car sits now I am refused recall service on my car that is unsafe to drive due to them releasing cars with unsafe lug nuts. Then to add a paywall to you getting your recall repairs. This is extremely unsafe and unethical, and I pray that the NHTSA will do something about this ongoing issue that is putting millions of Americans in danger and allowing these companies to take advantage of their customer base. I took action to bring this to your attention and I hope you will take preventive action to keep Americans safe on the roads.

I recently went through the process of searching for a new car after my 1996 Honda Accord was totaled in an accident. Despite my efforts to be frugal, I knew it was time to invest in a reliable vehicle that would last me a long time. After visiting over 30 dealerships, I finally found a 2013 Chevy Malibu LT Eco Tec with 81,000 miles for $13,000. I was thrilled with the car and excited to have a vehicle that was good on gas and had enough space for my dogs. However, just three days after purchasing the car, it started to have issues. It would die out while stopped and shake before finally turning off. Although the dealership has agreed to fix the issue, I have since learned that this model of car has a history of problems. Despite my disappointment, I am hopeful that the dealership will be able to resolve the issue and I will be able to enjoy my new car.

The back seat leg room is practically non-existent and the trunk has limited usable space due to the battery. However, the electric motor is a great help on steep uphill starts. The fuel mileage is lower than expected, with only 26 mpg in combined driving and never exceeding 30 mpg on the highway. I was hoping for 35 mpg on the highway. Getting in and out can be a bit tricky for someone with a bad back. Despite these shortcomings, I still like the car and would give it 4 stars.

After owning a 2008 Honda Accord and test driving a 2013 Honda Accord, I decided to purchase the 2013 Chevy Malibu Eco after test driving it. I was impressed with the interior and exterior design, as well as the low road noise. It reminded me of my 2010 Camaro that I used to own. I have only driven 100 miles so far, but I am looking forward to updating this review in a few thousand miles. I hope to have a positive experience with it.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your new Malibu! It sounds like you made a great choice in upgrading to the ECO 2SA with leather. It's great to hear that you're getting better gas mileage and experiencing less engine noise. The feature that shuts off the engine at stop lights and restarts seamlessly sounds like a great addition too. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!

  2. Karl Emard 2024-10-10

I picked up this car for my wife to use as her everyday driver and we absolutely love it! The stop/start feature is especially helpful during bumper to bumper traffic on her daily commute. With a little over 5k miles on it, she's been averaging an impressive 32 mpg combined. We also took it on a reasonably long trip and were thrilled to get 39 mpg! The 2.4 ecotec engine was even recognized as one of Wards 10 best engines. The car is incredibly quiet with zero wind noise, even at highway speeds. The only downside is that the low rolling resistance tires do make some road noise, but it's still quieter than any other vehicle in its segment.

I'm so glad to hear that you recently purchased a 2013 Malibu from the dealer and that you're enjoying it so much! It sounds like you've discovered some amazing features, like the electric engine that kicks in when you hit the gas. With only 57200 miles, it's no wonder that you're impressed with the smooth and quiet ride. Although the car is loaded with options that may take some time to figure out, I'm sure you'll love exploring all that it has to offer. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

  4. Garrett Kunze 2024-08-15

I think this car is great, but I would suggest a couple of improvements. Firstly, it would be helpful to include a full size spare with the same alloy wheel that's on the car. Secondly, it would be great if fog lights were included on all the models. Now, let me express how much I love this car! I absolutely adore it! The 2013 Malibu is a real winner. It looks fantastic and I get compliments all the time. The car is incredibly quiet when being driven and handles very well. It also has pretty good acceleration. The fit and finish in this car, with the blue accent lighting, allows me to really relax at night and enjoy the ride!

  5. Kaley Skiles 2024-08-14

I've had the Chevy 1LT Malibu for about a month now. I traded in my 2006 Honda Pilot with almost 100K miles on it, which was hard to let go of, but it was eating gas like crazy. I'm really enjoying the better gas mileage of the Malibu, it's not fantastic, but it's a big step up. We also have a 2012 Honda Accord, which gets better gas mileage and is zippier with smoother gear shifts. However, the Malibu feels like a really nice luxury car and I prefer it. In fact, my 18-year-old likes it much better than the Accord because of all the bells and whistles. It will be interesting to see the reliability of both cars in the future, but I have more faith in GM now than in the past. As for the OnStar navigation, which is free for 6 months, I'm not really impressed with it.
