History
The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).
For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.
In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

I HAVE SINCE RECEIVED A NOTICE THAT THEY ARE REPAIRING THIS ISSUE ONLY AFTER THE OWNER HAS A BRAKE FAILURE PROBLEM. THIS IS EXTREMELY UNSAFE AND IS UNACCEPTABLE. OWNERS NEED A SOLUTION AND DO NOT NEED TO WORRY THAT THIS ISSUE WILL ARISE AGAIN. IF I HIT A PERSON OR A VEHICLE, WILL GM PAY FOR MEDICAL BILLS, VEHICLE REPAIRS, LEGAL FEES? I HAD TO DEPRESS MY EMERGENCY BRAKE TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO A STOP. I PULLED THE TRUCK OVER AND TURNED OFF AND ON THE IGNITION AND THE BRAKE PEDAL REGAINED ITS SPONGY, NORMAL PRESSURE AND FEEL. THE BRAKES FELT NORMAL FOR ABOUT A WEEK OR SO AND I FELT MAYBE IT WAS AN ISOLATED INCIDENT UNTIL THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED WHEN I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK IN CITY STOP AND GO TRAFFIC. I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 5-10 MPH TRYING TO COME TO A STOP BEHIND THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME WHEN THE TRUCK CONTINUED TO ROLL FORWARD. I BARELY HAD ENOUGH TIME TO DEPRESS THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP AND CAME VERY CLOSE TO HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN AT VERY LOW SPEED, BUT NONETHELESS A COLLISION. I TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THE PROBLEM CHECKED OUT AND ENDED UP HAVING TO REPLACE THE VACUUM PUMP ASSEMBLY FOR $656.50, PARTS AND LABOR. I DEFINITELY FEEL THIS IS A VALID SAFETY ISSUE THAT DESERVES INVESTIGATING AND DOING EITHER A SAFETY NOTICE TO VEHICLE OWNERS THAT COULD BE EFFECTED OR A RECALL. HAD I KNOWN ABOUT THE POTENTIAL ISSUE I WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER ABLE TO DEAL WITH IT. IT REALLY SHOOK ME UP THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED. I DIDN'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING THE TRUCK EVEN 10 FEET AFTERWARDS.

- Summary: THE VEHICLE HAS EXCESSIVE STEERING PLAY. IT IS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE IN ICY CONDITIONS AND CAN BE NOTICED DRIVING THE VEHICLE STRAIGHT UNDER ALL DRIVING CONDITIONS ON DRY OR ICY PAVEMENT. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY PERFORMED SERVICE BULLETIN WORK AT MY EXPENSE TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THE SERVICE BULLETIN AND REWORK INVOLVED TIGHTENING THE STEERING BOX BACKLASH SCREW. THE PROBLEM WAS NOT FIXED AND STILL EXISTS. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM, BUT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED ON THE RECALL LIST TO FIX THE ISSUE. IN ORDER TO FIX THE ISSUE, THE PITMAN ARM SHAFT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED WITH AN UPDATED VERSION GM PN 84240812 IF THE STEERING PLAY CANNOT BE ADJUSTED OUT. THIS IS THE CASE WITH MY VEHICLE AND THE PART WAS NOT REPLACED.

LAST TIME AT THE DEALER SAID IT IS PROBABLY THE TIRES, HE SAID DONT ROTATE THEM AGAIN AND WHEN THEY WEAR OUT HE WILL PUT ME IN A 'BETTER' TIRE. I AM PAST MY WARRANTY SO THE DEALER SAYS ANY COSTS ARE MY RESPONSIBILITT, IF THE NHTSA COULD PLEASE STEP IN TO ASSIST US TO MAKE GM FIC THEAE VEHICLES WHICH ARE A SAFETY HAZARD.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 7 recalls for different components of the 2016 Gmc Sierra 1500.

- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, 3500, and Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks. The roof-rail air bag (RRAB) inflator end cap may detach from the inflator, or the inflator sidewall may rupture.
- Consequence: A separated inflator end cap or inflator rupture can allow compressed gas to escape, resulting in the end cap or other components being propelled into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury or crash.
- Remedy: Dealers will replace the left and right side RRAB modules, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed on August 18, 2021. Owners will receive a second notice when the remedy is available. Phase I owner notification letters were mailed on May 5, 2022. Phase II owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on May 31, 2022. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. If a wheel-speed sensor fails, while the vehicle is traveling between 41 and 60 mph in four-wheel or automatic mode, the Electronic-Brake Control Module (EBCM) software may activate the driveline-protection system.
- Consequence: Unintended activation of the driveline-protection system will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.

I noticed that the Elevation Edition for 2016 has just arrived in Canada and I have to say, it's a great looking truck with the Elevation package. I've received tons of compliments on it! The engine provides just enough power for my needs and the cylinder management works great. I shopped around for other trucks, but no one else offers such a good looking truck in the same trim and price.

Overall, this is a great truck and it excels at towing a 5,700 lb travel trailer. Although the transmission can be a bit sluggish at times, the ride is generally quiet. However, it can bounce over bigger potholes and railroad tracks. I hope it will be as reliable as the Tundra, but I have my doubts.

Best truck you've ever owned hands down! It's comfortable, quiet, and smooth. The 6.2 tows the big camper with ease, and it has amazing gas mileage for such a big engine - up to 24 on the open highway. Plus, at 28k, you haven't had any issues yet!

I have a 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4 that I absolutely fell in love with from the first time I saw it. It was loaded and had 60 thousand miles on it when we bought it. Since then, I have only had to put a new battery in it and of course, do regular maintenance on the truck. Unfortunately, I have been experiencing some health issues and that is one reason we bought this truck, because we thought it was dependable and would get me to and from doctors. However, about two weeks ago on my way home from the doctor, it started shuddering like crazy and I thought I wasn't going to make it home. I had it checked and to my dismay, it turned out to be the torque converter and the transmission. It is slipping from 1st to 3rd gear and there are metal shavings in the fluid. GMC advised me that it needed a new transmission. I am feeling quite upset about this. You pay 30,000 dollars for a used GMC with that few miles on it and it doesn't last, and GM won't do anything about it. It's a tough situation to be in.

I am sorry to hear about the major engine failure on your 2016 GMC Sierra. It is disappointing to know that the complete lifter repair was required just after the warranty expired. I understand that you have always had GM perform scheduled maintenance and even purchased an additional bumper to bumper warranty from GM. It is unfortunate that GM does not recognize that warranty but only the factory warranty. I can imagine how frustrating this must be for you. Hi there! I recently purchased a brand new pickup truck, but I've been having some trouble with the leaf springs. Even after the dealership cleaned and re-torqued them, they still make more noise than my old truck with 165,000 miles on it. I don't think it's just dirt causing the issue. On another note, I was a bit disappointed to find that the leather seats in the truck aren't completely leather - there's fabric next to the console. I hope GMC can improve this in the future!
