2003 Jaguar X-type problems

jaguar logo

The Jaguar X-Type is a car built by British marque Jaguar from 2001 to 2009. Considered a large family car in Europe and a compact car in the US, the X-Type has either a four-door saloon or a five-door estate body style and was sold in the compact-executive market segment. Given the internal designation X400, its engine is in the front and there are front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variants. In addition to offering Jaguar's first estate car in series production, the X-Type would ultimately introduce its first diesel engine, four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive configuration.

The X-Type was developed during the period when Jaguar was owned by Ford as a division of its Premier Automotive Group (PAG) (1999-2009) — and marked Jaguar's entry into the critical compact executive segment. The programme aimed to double the marque's worldwide sales — requiring expansion of engineering resources, factory capacity, marketing capability, sales support and service. At launch, Autocar called the X-Type "the most important Jaguar ever".

With annual projections of 100,000 sales, the X-Type recorded a production of 350,000 over its eight-year manufacturing run.

Common 2003 Jaguar X-type problems

The Jaguar X-Type, launched in 2001 and based on the third-generation Ford Mondeo, has been known to suffer from several common problems. These issues can affect the car's performance, safety, and overall reliability.

  • Indicator Problem: On some cars built between January 2001 and October 2002, there have been issues reported with indicators. The external indicator can be broken, but the interior light will continue to flash, breaking UK law.
  • Sensor Problem: A number of X-types built between February and March 2004 had sensor issues. The yaw-rate sensor has been known to internally delaminate, which could result in uneven and unexpected application of the brakes.
  • Brake Problem: Some cars built between January and February 2004 could have problems with their brakes. Vehicles with manual transmission, that are parked on an incline with the handbrake on and vehicle out of gear, could roll away due to brake components shrinking as they cool.
  • Short Circuit Problem: Some models built between August 2003 and August 2004 had insufficient clearance between the battery's positive cable and the number one cylinder fuel injector. This could cause the cable to chafe on the injector nut and result in a short circuit.
  • Cruise Control Problem: A number of X-types built between May 2005 and January 2010 had cruise control problems. It's possible that the cruise control might not disengage if certain faults occur with the engine management system.
  • Transmission Failure: Transmission failure is a common problem in Jaguar X-Type models. This issue can lead to a rough or clunky gearbox, or the car may not accelerate smoothly. In some cases, the transmission may need to be replaced entirely.
  • Engine Oil Pan Gasket May Leak: The engine oil pan gasket on Jaguar X-Type models can leak, leading to potential engine damage if not addressed promptly.
  • Persistent Coolant Loss Due to Small Leak at Coolant Reservoir: Some X-Type models may experience persistent coolant loss due to a small leak at the coolant reservoir. This issue can lead to overheating and potential engine damage if not addressed promptly.
  • Door Latch Failure: The door latches on the X-Type have a habit of failing and need replacing. This can be a significant safety concern, as it could potentially lead to the door opening while the car is in motion.
  • Remote Central Locking Key Fob Connection Loss: The remote central locking key fob can lose its connection to the car and has to be reprogrammed. This can be an inconvenience for drivers, especially if they are in a hurry or in a location with limited access to the car.
  • Chrome Trim Failure: If the chrome trim on the rear windows is loose, it means that both the trim and the glass will need to be replaced. This can be a cosmetic concern, but it can also lead to further damage to the car if not addressed promptly.
  • Air Conditioning Failure: Early cars tended to suffer from air conditioning failure. This can be a significant comfort concern, especially during hot weather or in areas with high humidity.
  • Drivetrain Failure: The biggest failure point is the drivetrain, especially the optional automatic gearbox and the transfer box for the four-wheel-drive system. A 'clunking' gearbox, or one that doesn’t allow the car to accelerate smoothly, will need replacement, and check that the engine management warning light is functioning properly – if it stays on that could be a sign of gearbox trouble, too.
  • Suspension Issues: The X-Type's suspension is sensitive to alignment issues and can chew through tyres if it’s not kept in line. If the car feels wobbly in corners, that most likely means that a radius arm on the rear suspension needs replacing.
  • Radiator Fluid Loss: Some X-Type owners have reported loss of radiator fluid, which can lead to overheating and potential engine damage if not addressed promptly.
  • Suspension Rattles and a Hard Bumpy Ride: Some X-Type models are known for having awful suspension rattles and a hard bumpy ride, which can affect the car's comfort and handling.

It's important to note that not all Jaguar X-Type models will experience these problems, and many cars can provide years of faultless service if they are well-maintained and cared for. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common issues and consider having the car inspected by a qualified mechanic before making a purchase.

Why are Jaguar X types so cheap?

Jaguar had high hopes that the X-Type model would make the brand much more popular, but it did not sell as well as they expected. As a result, used X-Types are now very reasonably priced, even though they still drive nicely and have a unique look.

How many miles can a Jaguar X-Type last?

Most Jaguar vehicles will last for at least 150,000 miles, but there's a lot that a driver can do to push this number much higher. With regular oil replacement, belt changes, spark plug replacement, and other basic maintenance services, you can ensure that your Jaguar lasts for 200,000 miles or more.

What problems did the Jaguar X-Type have in 2004?

A number of X-types built between February and March 2004 had sensor issues. The yaw-rate sensor has been known to internally delaminate, which could result in uneven and unexpected application of the brakes. Some cars built between January and February 2004 could have problems with their brakes.

  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: INFORMED BY JAGUAR SERVICE DEALER IN CERRITOS ON 02/07 AND 09/27/13 THAT TRANSMISSION HAD FAILED AND REQUIRED REPLACEMENT. CONDUCTED ONLINE RESEARCH DURING THE LAST TWO MONTHS AND DISCOVERED THAT THE AUTO WAS DEMONSTRATING THE EXACT FAILURE AS 1999 JAGUAR XK8 (RECALL NO. 478 - REPLACE TRANSMISSION), AS FOLLOWS: "IT IS IMPORTANT TO EMPHASIZE THAT ANY FAILURE OF A TRANSMISSION WHICH INVOLVES COMPLETE LOCKUP IS ONLY LIKELY TO OCCUR AT VERY LOW VEHICLE SPEED, AS THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTS DOWN INTO 1ST GEAR WITH THE VEHICLE ALMOST AT A SANDSTILL AFTER BEING IN HIGHER GEARS WHEN TRAVELING AT HIGHER SPEEDS." EACH OF THE INCIDENTS I HAVE EXPERIENCED WITH THE CAR STALLING AND THE TRANSMISSION WARNING LIGHT APPEARING HAS OCCURRED WHILE SLOWING DOWN ON THE FREEWAY DURING HEAVY TRAFFIC OR EXITING THE FREEWAY. RESPONSE FROM MS. CARMEN BAKER OF JAGUAR WAS THAT THE CAR IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY, THEREFORE SHE IS UNABLE TO HONOR MY REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE WITH TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT. IT IS MY BELIEF THAT THE CAR WAS EQUIPPED WITH A DEFECTIVE AND/OR RECYCLED (REFURBISHED) TRANSMISSION. CURRENT MILEAGE IS 59,877. BECAUSE OF THE SAFETY FACTOR OF THE CAR STALLING, I AM VERY RELUCTANT TO DRIVE ON THE FREEWAYS OR ROADS WHERE THE AVERAGE SPEED IS ABOVE 40 MILES. ON ONE OCCASION ON THE FREEWAY, A KIND DRIVER FOLLOWED ME UNTIL I WAS ABLE TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. JAGUAR ONLY CONSIDERED THE AGE OF THE CAR, NOT THE DEFECT OR CUSTOMER SAFETY. TRANSMISSION WAS REPAIRED ON 04/23/2004 AND 02/26/09. UPDATED 7/23/2015 *JS

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-04-03
  • VIN: SAJEA51D83X
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: LAST YEAR THE CAR EXHIBITED SEVERE CORROSION IN THE RIGHT AND LEFT "A" PILLAR AREA AT THE BOTTOM WHERE IT BLENDS WITH THE ROCKER PANEL.WORKING ON THE CAR RECENTLY, THE CORROSION HAS PROGRESSED TO THE POINT WHERE THE FRONT JACK LIFT POINT AS OUTLINED IN THE OWNERS MANUAL, IS COMPLETELY UNSAFE TO LIFT FROM. THE CRYSTALLIZATION OF THE METALS ARE PASSED THE SAFE POINT. MY MAJOR CONCERN IS AT WHAT POINT DOES THE VEHICLE BECOME UNSAFE TO DRIVE DUE TO FAILURE OF SIDE IMPACT PROTECTION AND PASSENGER COMPARTMENT SAFETY. AS I UNDERSTAND FROM OTHER OWNERS, JAGUAR DESIGNED THIS MODEL SO THAT THE DRAINS FOR THE FRONT WINDSHIELD WIPER AND VENT BOX DRAIN INTO THE A PILLAR. WHEN THE HOLE AT THE BOTTOM GETS PLUGGED WITH MUD OR ICE DURING THE WINTER THAT WATER MIXED WITH ROAD SALT CREATES THE PERFECT ENVIRONMENT FOR THIS RESULTING CORROSION. THIS MODEL CAR BEING DRIVEN IN AREAS THAT USE ROAD SALT FOR DICING AS WELL AS CHLORIDES ON GRAVEL ROADS FOR DUST CONTROL WOULD ALL BE DEEMED UNSAFE BEFORE THE VEHICLES LIFETIME IS USED UP. TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE FOR A WORLD CLASS AUTO MANUFACTURERS. *TR

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-08-10
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM IN WHICH NO ONE SEEMS TO WANT TO ADDRESS. THERE IS A KNOWN FLAW IN THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS OF THE JAGUAR X-TYPE MODELS FROM 2002-2005. THE ROCKER PANELS WHICH ARE CONSTRUCTED OF STEEL, WITH NO DRAINAGE HOLES AND NO CORROSION PROTECTION. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD AS THE CORROSION IMPACTS THE UNI-BODY CONSTRUCTION WHICH IMPACTS THE SIDE IMPACT STRUCTURE. SEEMS JAGUAR IS AWARE OF THIS MATTER YET REFUSES TO ADMIT A FLAW AND ADDRESSES COMPLAINTS TO THIS ISSUE BY OFFERING CASH ASSISTANCE ON A CASE BY CASE BASIS AND "CODES" IT AS A CUSTOMER COURTESY. MY VEHICLE IS A 2003 X-TYPE PURCHASED NEW IN 2002, RUST WAS FOUND SHOWING THROUGH THE SILL PLATE FROM THE INSIDE OUT, 7 DAYS OVER A 6 YEAR WARRANTY. IN REPAIRING THIS DUE TO JAGUAR REFUSING TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE (YET OFFERED ME A COURTESY OF $3K TOWARDS REPAIRS), THE RESULT WAS FAULTY MFG OF '02 - '05 MODELS IN WHICH THE MODELS WHERE ALL DEFECTIVE. THE ROCKER PANEL IS BUILT IN STEEL, WITH NO DRAINAGE HOLES ALLOWING FOR SALT/WATER TO CAPTURE INSIDE, THUS CORRODING THE UNIBODY AND A-FRAME OF THE CAR. I HAVE RECEIPTS AND ONLINE PROOF OF THIS DEFECT AND IGNORING OF THE ISSUE. I AM SEEKING RESTITUTION FOR THE ADDITIONAL $4K PUT INTO THE REPAIR (JAGUAR CONTRIBUTED $3K AS A "COURTESY") OF THE VEHICLE. THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED AS A TOTAL RECALL OF X-TYPE MODELS SHOWING PROOF OF RUST AND/OR INVOICED REPAIRS. I AM IN THE PROCESS OF SPEAKING WITH THE DIVISION OF MOTOR VEHICLES, DEALERS/LICENSE DEPARTMENT WITH DIRECTION FROM THE ATTORNEY GENERALS OFFICE AND AM AWAITING THE RESPONSE FROM THE STATE'S BOARD OF ATTORNEYS. I HAD MY CAR TOTALLY REFABRICATED DUE TO A SAFETY CONCERN COMPROMISING THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE CAR. IF THIS COMPLAINT GOES UNATTENDED TO, THEN WHY CAN'T ONE INSPECT A VEHICLE WITH VISIBLE RUST?? MUST BE BECAUSE IT'S A SAFETY ISSUE. *TR

Negative 2003 Jaguar X-type car reviews

  1. Jason Schaden 2024-11-27

I purchased my Jag with 12,000 miles on it and the dealer kindly gave us two new tires. However, at 22,000 miles, I had to replace all four tires despite following the proper rotation schedule. Additionally, I needed to replace the brakes every 30,000 miles. Although the car was garage kept, it always struggled in cold weather. I had to make major hose repairs at 30,000 miles and replace the battery at 60,000 miles. While the key fob still unlocks up close, I had to replace the driver door lock system and the driver's door panel fell off twice due to broken clips. I also had to constantly repair the passenger side defroster vent to prevent it from rattling. Unfortunately, I found rust starting on the hood almost a year after the rust warranty had ended. Currently, the engine light is on again and I am trading it this week. Despite all of these issues, I kept the car because I did not have any payments.

  2. Harry Howell 2024-10-22

I purchased the 2.5 X-Type for my wife back in 2008. It was a one-owner car and appeared to be very well taken care of, with tons of dealer receipts and only 45K miles on the odometer. However, like any beautiful wife or girlfriend, it had its issues - you just can't have it all! Over the years, I have had to perform regular maintenance, which wasn't too bad since I take care of all my cars. But then came the O2 sensors, Bank 1 Bank 2, the lower catalytic converter, the vacuum system, and the valve cover leaking. At this point, we had gotten a lot of use out of it, with 160,000 miles on it. Currently, I have a check engine light (flashing), an e-brake light on, and an ABS light on. The car drives fine, but it won't go over 3K RPM. The forums suggest a myriad of things to fix this, but they are quite expensive and not worth the cost of the car. I'll drive it until it falls apart, I guess. Overall, it was a reliable car for 10 years of its life, from 2003 to 2013. Unfortunately, it died in the early months of 2020 due to so many issues. When we connected it to the code reader, there were just pages of error codes - 8 to 10 codes per page. My wife didn't want to let it go, but honestly, it was a liability driving it. Rest in peace, Jag.

Despite the issues I have experienced with my x-type, I am confident in the expertise of the mechanics at the shop to diagnose and fix the problems. The whistle in the drive shaft was addressed, and although it returned, I trust that the new transmission will resolve the issue. Additionally, I have brought to the attention of the manufacturer the design flaw in the gas tank door, and I am confident that they will take the necessary steps to address it. While the ride may not be as smooth as I had hoped, I am still satisfied with my investment in this vehicle.

In my opinion, while the X-type has some of the Jaguar styling cues, it lacks the soul and character that BMW, Audi, and now Acura do so well in building into their cars. Although it rides well, handles competently, and has adequate zip, it doesn't exude the driving excitement that the aforementioned class leaders have. However, if you're looking for a more subdued experience, the X-type might be right up your alley.

I received my new X-type in December. The motor runs well and the car is quiet. However, I have noticed that the handling is not up to par. The car and steering wheel bounce and rumble, which may be due to the AWD gears not being smooth. As a result, the car has a poor feel of the road, since the steering wheel bounces on its own, along with the car frame - this gets worse as the car speeds up. The ride is adequate at low speeds. When I received the car, the seat was loose and the tires were underinflated and way out of balance. Although the handling improved a little when I had the tires balanced, it is still not right (as mentioned above). Despite these issues, it is still a Ford, and I remain hopeful that it will meet my expectations.

Great job, car! You're driving 60 miles every day in Michigan weather, and your all-wheel drive is really helping out with nice MPG.

  2. Garfield Schulist 2024-11-10

This car has been a great joy to me for the past 5 years. I love its nice looks, decent power (3 liter), and all wheel drive (AWD) versatility. Of course, the Jaguar brand name is a plus too! It's always a great feeling when friends and strangers recognize the brand and make positive comments about its looks. Even after 5 years of ownership, I still love its looks and feel so much that I decided to keep it when I recently bought a new car. The 3 liter engine feels strong and satisfying in most situations, although the automatic transmission loses a second or two when downshifting in sudden acceleration. However, it makes up for this in smooth operation when needing to pass. Last but not least, the AWD feature has been a lifesaver in snowy and icy conditions.

The all wheel drive is fantastic! You'll be happy to know that when driving at 53 MPH, you can get 32 mpg or even more. This makes it perfect for those long highway trips!

I bought the car with 60K miles and have put over 80K miles on it in just over 2 years. I've only had to replace the brakes, radiator overflow tank, and plugs at 100K. The gas mileage is fantastic and I've received offers for $7-8K, even though I only paid $10K for it. It's perfect for road trips and handles great in all areas. I'm confident that I'll be able to get at least another 100K miles out of this car.

Great car! I'm so glad I purchased it used and for the most part, I loved it! I would definitely buy another one and may do so in the near future...
