2004 Mercury Marauder problems
The Mercury Marauder is an automobile nameplate that was used for three distinct full-size cars produced by the Mercury division of Ford Motor Company. Deriving its name from the most powerful engines available to the Mercury line, the Marauder was marketed as the highest-performance version of the full-size product range.
Introduced as a 19631⁄2 model line for its first production run, the Mercury Marauder was distinguished by its sloped roofline (shared with the Ford Galaxie). The nameplate was a sub-model of the three Mercury model lines (Monterey, Monterey Custom, and S-55).
For the 1966 model year, the Marauder was replaced by the S-55 as a stand-alone model line, making it the Mercury counterpart of the Ford Galaxie 500 XL version.
The Marauder model name returned as a fastback-like version of the Mercury Marquis for the 1969 model year. It was positioned as a personal luxury car between the Mercury Cougar and Continental Mark III. Following the 1970 model year, the Marauder model was discontinued.
The Mercury Marauder nameplate was revived for the 2003 model year as a high-performance variant of the full-size Grand Marquis using the Ford Panther platform. After lower-than-expected sales, the Marauder was discontinued at the end of the 2004 model year. The Mercury Marauder became the last rear-wheel drive sedan introduced by Ford Motor Company in North America.

Common 2004 Mercury Marauder problems
The Mercury Marauder, produced in 2003 and 2004, is a high-performance sedan known for its power and style. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems reported by owners.
One of the most frequently reported issues is engine misfires, which can be caused by various factors such as faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, or fuel injectors. Engine misfires can lead to a decrease in performance, poor fuel efficiency, and an increased risk of engine damage.
Another common problem is the check engine light staying on, which can be caused by a variety of issues, including engine sensors, emissions systems, or transmission problems. A persistent check engine light can indicate a serious issue that needs to be addressed promptly to avoid further damage to the vehicle.
The Mercury Marauder has also been reported to have issues with headlight failure, with 2 complaints for the 2003 model year and 1 complaint for the 2004 model year. This can be a safety issue, as proper lighting is essential for safe driving, especially during nighttime or low-visibility conditions.
Additionally, some owners have reported issues with the axles, with 1 complaint for the 2003 model year. This can lead to difficulty steering or handling the vehicle, which can be a serious safety concern.
The Marauder has also been reported to have issues with paint blistering or cracking, with 1 complaint for the 2003 model year. This can be a cosmetic issue, but it can also lead to more serious problems if left unaddressed, such as rust or corrosion.
Some owners have reported issues with the steering being stiff or hard to turn on occasions, with 1 complaint for the 2004 model year. This can be a safety issue, as proper steering is essential for safe driving, especially at high speeds or in emergency situations.
Finally, some owners have reported issues with headlights going out, with 1 complaint for the 2004 model year. This can be a safety issue, as proper lighting is essential for safe driving, especially during nighttime or low-visibility conditions.
It is important to note that these issues are based on complaints from owners and may not be representative of all Mercury Marauders. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider having the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic before purchasing.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-06-02
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING MY 2004 MERCURY MARAUDER ON A TWO LANE ROAD IN DELAWARE COUNTY NY WHEN MY HEADLIGHTS WENT OUT. DRIVING THE BACK ROADS TAKES TOTAL CONCENTRATION DUE TO THE LARGE NUMBER OF NOCTURNAL ANIMALS WHICH CAN CROSS ROADS. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS CAR AND I TAKE GREAT PRIDE IN MAINTAINING IT TO THE UTMOST TOP CONDITION. IT IS RARE TO FIND THIS MODEL CAR(A MARAUDER) BUT IT IS A GRAND MARQUIS/ CROWN VIC AND WHILE CERTAIN PARTS LIKE TIRES ARE HARD TO COME BY, A LIGHT CONTROL MODULE(LCM) IS A DIME A DOZEN. FORD HAS A PROGRAM 14N01 (RECALL?) TO REPLACE THESE MODULES. REPEATED CALLS TO FORD CUSTOMER CARE AND MY DEALER HAS PROVED THAT FORD WANTS TO HELP YET MAKES NO COMMITMENT OTHER THEN OFFERING ME A AFTERMARKET PART. THE FORD PART IS ON BACK ORDER. I FEEL FORD WILL HELP ME BUT ONLY AFTER MY 18 YEAR SON HAS CRASHED DUE TO FORD RELUCTANCE TO IMMEDIATELY CORRECT A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS CONDITION. IF THE PROPER PART IS ON BACK ORDER WHEN WILL THE PART BECOME AVAILABLE? I PURCHASED THE PART FROM A FORD DEALER AND REPLACED IT MYSELF. WHY? I CAN BUY THE LCM FROM A DEALER IN TEXAS BUT MY NY DEALER CAN'T GET THE PART? FORD RECOGNIZES THE PROBLEM USES A EXCUSE OF NO PARTS? MORE IMPORTANT, FORD AND FORD DEALERS WANT TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM IMMEDIATELY WITH A NON OEM PART? WHY? FORD NO LONGER HAS MANUFACTURING RESOURCES? HOW ABOUT A POTENTIAL HEAD ON COLLISION DUE TO A FAILED RELAY OR RELAYS IN THE LCM WHICH COSTS $20 IN PARTS TO REPLACE. SHAME ON YOU FORD! HOW DARE YOU PUT PUBLIC SAFETY JOB # WHO KNOWS! *TR

- VIN: 2MEHM79V54X
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING

I INSTINCTIVELY PUT IT IN NEUTRAL TO TRY AND RESTART WHICH I DID BUT IT STALLED AGAIN AND THIS TIME IT WAS COMPLETELY DEAD WHILE UNFORTUNATELY ON THE CURVE OF A 2 LANE BRIDGE WITH NO SHOULDER OR BREAKDOWN LANE. LUCKILY THE HAZARD LIGHTS WERE ENOUGH FOR ON COMING TRAFFIC AND TRACTOR TRAILERS TO SEE ME IN TIME OR I COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN KILLED ON THAT BRIDGE. GREAT APPRECIATION TO DISPATCH AND THE STATE TROOPERS FOR THEIR ASSISTANCE. *TR

SWITCH SEEMS TO BE THE ISSUE, FUSES ARE FINE AND NO BULBS OUT. RECENTLY HAD DEALERSHIP REPLACE DRIVER SIDE HEADLIGHT, ONLY CHANGE TO VEHICLE BEFORE ISSUE STARTED. VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-03-01
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: WIPERS CONTINUING FOR TWO YEARS TO OCCASIONALLY TURN ON AND OFF WITHOUT SWITCH ACTIVATION. ALTHOUGH THE ISSUE IS WELL DOCUMENTED IN MANY OF THE FORUMS FOR MARAUDERS, THE FACT THAT FORD HAS MADE NO RECALL IS SHAMEFUL. EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-10-20
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 MERCURY MARAUDER. WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH WITH THE HEADLIGHTS ON, THE HEADLIGHTS SUDDENLY TURNED OFF. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO MANEUVER WITH CAUTION TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND AFTER WAITING TEN MINUTES, THE HEADLIGHTS BEGAN TO FUNCTION NORMALLY. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-03-15
- VIN: 2MEHM79V24X
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: HEADLIGHTS IN 2004 MERCURY MARAUDER BEGAN GOING OUT INTERMITTENTLY AT ABOUT 60K MILES, ALSO INTERMITTENTLY NOT COMING ON WHEN TURNED ON BY SWITCH. THEY NOW RARELY STAY ON FOR MORE THAN 5 MINUTES AT A TIME. THIS IS UNDOUBTEDLY RELATED TO THE WIDELY REPORTED FAILURE OF MOTOROLA-MANUFACTURED FORD LIGHTING CONTROL MODULE (LCM, FORD P/N 4W7Z13C788BB) UNITS IN MANY FORD 'PANTHER' PLATFORM MODELS (CROWN VIC, GRAND MARQUIS, MARAUDER) THROUGH MODEL YEAR 2004. NHTSA ACTION PE08066 ADDRESSES THIS ISSUE. THE FORD/MERCURY DEALER I SOUGHT SERVICE FOR THIS ISSUE FROM RECOMMENDED REPLACEMENT OF THE LCM AT A COST OF $700 FOR PARTS AND LABOR. THE PART IS AVAILABLE THROUGH INTERNET SOURCES FROM $300 TO $500. THE DEALER WOULD NOT GUARANTEE THAT THIS PART REPLACEMENT WOULD FIX THE INTERMITTENT HEADLIGHT PROBLEM, SO I HAVE DECIDED TO PURCHASE AND REPLACE THE UNIT MYSELF AND RETURN THE PART IF THIS DOES NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM. THIS IS AN ISSUE OF PUBLIC SAFETY THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY A RECALL -- CARS TRAVELING AT NIGHT WITHOUT HEADLIGHTS ARE A DANGER TO THE DRIVING AND PEDESTRIAN PUBLIC. IT IS HARD TO FATHOM WHY THE NHTSA WOULD DISAGREE WITH THIS LOGIC AND CLOSE THIS INVESTIGATION. SINCE MANY OWNERS AND THIRD-PARTIES ARE NOW SHARING STORIES AND HOME-GROWN SOLUTIONS ON THE INTERNET (REPLACING/RE-SOLDERING THE DEFECTIVE NEC RELAY P/N EQ1-11111S, WHICH IS THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM), THE NHTSA IS PASSING OWNERSHIP AND RESPONSIBILITY OF FORD'S BAD MANUFACTURING DECISION ON TO VEHICLE OWNERS. THIS IS A TERRIBLE MESSAGE TO GIVE THE PUBLIC, IT FURTHER ERODES ANY TRUST A CONSUMER COULD POSSIBLY HAVE IN FORD PRODUCTS. THE HUGE VOLUME OF FLEET VEHICLES (TAXI, POLICE, MUNICIPAL) THAT ARE AFFECTED MAKES THIS AN EVEN MORE CRITICAL SAFETY ISSUE. THE NHTSA SHOULD HAVE ITS LEGAL POSITION PREPARED FOR A WORST-CASE SCENARIO IN WHICH AN ACCIDENT RESULTING IN DEATH IS LINKED TO THIS DEFECT. *TR
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-08-01
- VIN: 2MEHM79V34X
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: I HAVE A 2004 MERCURY MARAUDER AND HAVE HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE PAINT SPLITTING AND BLISTERING ON THE FRONT HOOD, ROOF AND REAR TRUNK. I CONTACTED BOTH MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND FORD AND THEY BOTH SAY I'M JUST OUTSIDE OF MY WARRANTY (WITHIN A YEAR) AND THEREFORE NOTHING THEY CAN DO. THE DEALERSHIP LOOKED AT THE ISSUE AND STATED IT WAS POSSIBLY MISSING SOME PROTECTIVE UNDERCOATING AND IS ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE. I DID FILE A COMPLAINT WITH FORD. *TR

THE BRAKES ARE 4-WHEEL ANTILOCK. *AK

- Date Of Incident: 2004-06-29

- Date Of Incident: 2006-03-08

THE PEDALS ARE TOO CLOSE TOGETHER WHICH CAUSES THE DRIVER TO UNKNOWINGLY DEPRESS THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, WHILE PRESSING THE BRAKE OR VISA VERSA. THE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED AND COULD NOT OFFER A SOLUTION. THIS HAPPENS REGARDLESS OF WHERE THE PEDALS ARE ADJUSTED. THERE WAS AN ACCIDENT IN OCTOBER, 2004. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE UPON A RAMP IN ORDER TO CHANGE THE OIL. WHEN THE BRAKE WAS DEPRESSED, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS ALSO INADVERTENTLY DEPRESSED, CAUSING THE CAR TO SURGE FORWARD ONTO THE RAMP. THAT INCIDENT RESULTED IN $250 WORTH OF DAMAGE. Awesome car! It's so great to drive and has amazing handling. The interior and exterior are both fantastic, and the sound of the engine is just perfect. Overall, it's a truly great car in every way!
-
This car is an incredible value. I paid 22K CPO in Aug and it rides like an American S-Class. While it could be a little faster, once it's off the line, this car is an animal from 20-120. I think Mercury hit the nail on the head with this one. More horses would've made this car a gas guzzler, so I think they made the right call. I do wish they hadn't bailed out so soon on HiPo, though. Now Chrysler has all the 4-door muscle, including a suicide door Imperial. (Way to go, LM, asleep at the wheel as usual.) This car is beautiful in every way imaginable. They should bring it back and offer a light 4.6 and a supercharged version. I love this car. Drive it once and you'll want it.
-
This car is a real head turner. The big and bold styling, along with the chrome wheels and metallic red paint, drew rave reviews from family and friends. The bucket seats are very supportive, especially with the lumbar support. With 302 horses from a 281 cubic inch engine, what more could you ask for? Plus, it has ABS and traction control, and great attention to detail inside and out. It's big by nature and a lot of fun to drive!
-
This is an excellent vehicle that is comfortable and nice looking. It has great built-in features and the seating is excellent. The music sound is great and the back seat is comfortable for both small and large people. It rates very well with foreign cars, if not better.
-
The car provides great comfort and allows for a quick entry into the fast lane, giving a safe feeling ride with all the steel surrounding you. It's amusing to see people move out of the way, mistaking the car for a cop car, until they see the Registration Sticker in the back window. It's also interesting to see older drivers give the car a second look, as they are used to driving normal Grand M's or Crown Vic's. If you live up North, it's advisable to buy a remote starter, or better yet, negotiate it as part of the deal. I was able to get it for free. However, it's important to note that no snow tires are made for the back wheels.

I really like the Marauder! It would be amazing if Mercury released a convertible version. I've seen it in auto shows online and it looks fantastic! I would absolutely love to drive that car. The Marauder itself is a great, fun car to drive with plenty of room for kids or trips. If you're on the fence about buying it, I would definitely recommend taking the plunge!
