2011 Chevrolet Colorado problems
The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.
First generation (2004)
The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.
The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

Common 2011 Chevrolet Colorado problems
The Chevrolet Colorado, introduced in 2003, has been a popular mid-size pickup truck. However, like any vehicle, it has faced its share of issues across different model years. This article explores common problems with the 2011 Chevrolet Colorado, based on complaints from owners.
- Misfiring Engine: The 2011 Chevrolet Colorado has been reported to have engine misfiring issues, although this problem was more prevalent in earlier models such as 2004-2009. Worn-out valve seats, faulty spark plugs, or vacuum leaks can cause engine misfires, leading to the truck stalling intermittently.
- Power Steering Loss: The 2011 Chevrolet Colorado has had some instances of power steering loss. This issue is more pronounced in the 2015 model, where drivers have reported seeing the service power steering or StabiliTrak warning lights before losing control of their power steering. Low fluid levels, damaged belts, or faulty steering pumps are common causes of this problem.
- Faulty Fuel Level Sensor: Many Chevrolet Colorado owners, including those with 2011 models, have reported erratic and inaccurate readings with their fuel gauges. The main culprit is the malfunctioning fuel level sensor, which needs to be replaced to ensure accurate fuel gauge readings.
In conclusion, while the 2011 Chevrolet Colorado is generally reliable, it has faced some common problems such as transmission issues, misfiring engines, power steering loss, and faulty fuel level sensors. These issues can lead to inconvenience, additional costs, and even potential danger on the road. Therefore, potential buyers should be aware of these problems and consider them when making a purchasing decision.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-16
- VIN: 1GCJTDFE7B8
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The vehicle has an electronic issue where it does not recognize the original key to the car. It does not let you start the vehicle. There is a bad sensor in the ignition lock housing unit located where the key is inserted into the vehicle. This issue will nit let the driver start the car and the problem happens at random. For me it is 1 out of 20 times i try to start my vehicle it does not start due to this issue. This is a dangerous situation for me, as I live in a cold weather state in the US. I have been left stranded dozens of times because the car doesn’t recognize the key. If you search “chevy colorado passlock” hundreds of videos will come up, each video with thousands of views (from users like myself). GM charges hundreds to fix the issue. It is a well known issue with this vehicle. I fixed the issue myself. I replaced the faulty sensor and the issue is gone.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-07
- VIN: 1GCESCF95B8

This is the third time it has happened, first at 89,000 miles, then at 111,000 miles, and now at 133,000 miles. Previous repairs were for broken wires in the wire harness to the extended cab rear door. Wiring in the harness for the airbag is related to the seat belt tensioner. This is a defect that was reported to NHTSA by several others, some of whom were injured in accidents. The repair is costly; the dealer charged around $400.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-07-01

Bed of truck is flipping up and there is no gap left between the bed of the truck and the cab at the top but there is 1.5 inch gap at bottom of bed/cab. The truck only has 56,000 miles and I have only put 26,000 miles on it since I bought it in 2017.

I HAVE RECEIVED NOTHING BUT DENIALS OF WRONG DOING OR GENERAL INCOMPETENCE FROM GM. I HAVE A FRIEND EXPERIENCING THIS SAME PROBLEM ON A 2020 CHEVY SILVERADO. WHY DO WE HAVE TO WAIT FOR SOMEONE TO BECOME SERIOUS MAIMED OR WORSE CASE LOSE THEIR LIFE FOR GM TO DO THE RIGHT THING?

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-06-04
- VIN: 1GCDSCF90B8
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: MY VEHICLE AND MANY OTHERS AS WELL SUFFER FROM A INTERMITTENT PROBLEM OF THE PASS LOCK SECURITY SAFETY FEATURE. THERE ARE TIMES WHEN INSERTING THE KEY IN THE IGNITION THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START BECAUSE THE PASS LOCK FAILS TO RECOGNIZE THE KEY. WHEN THIS HAPPENS A SECURITY LOCK INDICATOR ON THE DASH FLASHES. TO OVERCOME THIS THE IGNITION HAS TO BE PLACED IN THE 'OFF THE ON ' POSITION AND LET IT REMAIN SO FOR AT LEAST 10 MINUTES. AFTER SUCH TIME THE VEHICLE WILL STAR UNTIL A UNDETERMINED TIME THE DISCREPANCY OCCURS AGAIN. BESIDES MY VEHICLE I HAVE FOUND THIS CONDITION TO EXIST ON MANY OWNERS ON THIS TYPE AND OTHER GM MODELS AS WELL AND AS FAR AS I CAN TELL FROM 2006 AND ON. IT'S A INCONVENIENCE PLUS IF FOR SOME REASON THERE WAS A EMERGENCY OF SOME KIND THE OWNER WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO START IT'S VEHICLE AND IT WOULD NOT KNOW WHEN OR WHERE IT'S IT IS A INTERMITTENT PROBLEM. SO YOU CAN BE ON STREET, ON A CURVE OFF THE HIGHWAY OR ANY AREA STATIONARY. THE CHEVROLET HIGH RESOLUTION TEAM IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND DOES NOT CONSIDER IT IMPORTANT ENOUGH TO ADDRESS THIS OTHER THAN HAVING THE IGNITION LOCK HOUSING REPLACED , IGNITION KEY REPLACED, AND HAVING NEW KEY PROGRAMMED . ALL ACCOMPLISHED AT MIAMI LAKES CHEVROLET IN MIAMI FL.

I WAS TOLD THIS IS VERY COMMON FOR EXTENDED CABS AS THE WIRING IS TO SHORT AND IS PINCHED WHEN THE REAR DOOR OPENS AND SHUTS. THE WIRES EVENTUALLY FAIL AND CAUSE THE AIR BAG SYSTEM TO GO INTO A FAULT SITUATION AND NO LONGER WORK. ALSO I WAS TOLD THAT THE OTHER WIRES IN THE RUBBER BOOT WILL ALSO EVENTUALLY FAIL INCLUDING THE SPEAKER WIRE AND INTERIOR LIGHT SENSOR WIRES. I WAS TOLD THIS IS AN EXTENDED CAB ISSUE NO OTHER MODELS SEEM TO DO THIS.
2011 Chevrolet Colorado recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2011 Chevrolet Colorado.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:HOOD:LATCH
- Summary: General Motors is recalling certain model year 2010-2012 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon vehicles manufactured from November 9, 2009, through August 28, 2012, for failing to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 113, "Hood Latch System." The hood may be missing the secondary hood latch.
- Consequence: If the primary hood latch is not engaged, the hood could open unexpectedly. During vehicle operation, this could obstruct the view of the driver and increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: General Motors will notify owners and instruct them to inspect their vehicle for the presence of a secondary hood latch. Dealers will replace the hood on any affected vehicles, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on January 17, 2013. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC at 1-866-996-9463.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS LLC
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:GEAR POSITION INDICATION (PRNDL)
- Summary: GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2011 CHEVROLET COLORADO AND GMC CANYON PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 2.9 OR 3.7 LITER ENGINE AND A FOUR-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FOR FAILING TO CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO 102, "TRANSMISSION SHIFT LEVER SEQUENCE, STARTER INTERLOCK, AND TRANSMISSION BRAKING EFFECT," AND FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 114, "THEFT PROTECTION." THESE VEHICLES MAY HAVE BEEN BUILT WITH AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ADJUSTMENT CLIP THAT MAY NOT RETAIN THE SHIFT CABLE IN THE CORRECT POSITION. IF THE SHIFT CABLE IS NOT IN THE CORRECT POSITION, THE PRNDL SHIFT LEVER MAY NOT ACCURATELY REFLECT THE POSITION OF THE TRANSMISSION GEAR. THE DRIVER COULD MOVE THE SHIFTER TO "PARK" AND REMOVE THE IGNITION KEY, BUT THE TRANSMISSION GEAR MAY NOT BE IN "PARK."
- Consequence: THE DRIVER MAY NOT BE ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE, AND THE VEHICLE COULD ROLL AWAY AS THE DRIVER OR OTHER OCCUPANTS EXIT THE VEHICLE OR HAVE EXITED, RESULTING IN THE POSSIBILITY OF THE VEHICLE STRIKING THEM OR SOMEONE AROUND THE VEHICLE, OR COULD RESULT IN A CRASH WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.
- Remedy: GM DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ADJUSTMENT CLIP FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR ABOUT JULY 19, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438 AND GMC AT 1-866-996-9463.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS LLC
- Components: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER:MOTOR
- Summary: GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2011 CHEVROLET COLORADO AND GMC CANYON VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 22, 2010, THROUGH NOVEMBER 5, 2010. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE THE CONDITION IN WHICH THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR CRANK ARM NUT MAY NOT BE TIGHTENED TO SPECIFICATION. WHEN THE WIPERS ARE OPERATED WITH A BUILD-UP OF SNOW OR ICE, OR IF THE WIPERS ARE OPERATED ON A DRY WINDSHIELD, THE NUT COULD LOOSEN. IF THERE IS SUFFICIENT LOOSENING OF THE NUT, THE WIPERS COULD BECOME INOPERATIVE.
- Consequence: DRIVER VISIBILITY COULD BE REDUCED INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL SECURE THE WIPER MOTOR CRANK ARM NUT FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE MAY 11, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463 OR WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: SUSPENSION:REAR:AXLE:SPINDLE
- Summary: GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2011 CADILLAC ESCALADE, ESCALADE ESV, ESCALADE EXT; CHEVROLET AVALANCHE, COLORADO, EXPRESS, SILVERADO, SUBURBAN, TAHOE; AND GMC CANYON, SIERRA, SAVANA, YUKON AND YUKON XL VEHICLES. THE REAR AXLE CROSS PINS WERE NOT PROPERLY HEAT TREATED AND COULD FRACTURE AND BECOME DISPLACED WITHIN THE REAR AXLE. SHOULD THE PIN SHIFT OUT OF POSITION, IT COULD CREATE AN INTERFERENCE CONDITION AND CAUSE THE REAR AXLE TO LOCK.
- Consequence: THE DRIVER MAY NOT BE ABLE TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND A CRASH COULD OCCUR WITHOUT WARNING.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW REAR AXLE CROSS PIN FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JANUARY 11, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339, CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463 AND AT THE OWNER CENTER AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: CHILD SEAT
- Summary: GM IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2011, CHEVROLET COLORADO, GMC CANYON, MODEL YEAR 2006, ISUZU I-280/I-350, AND MODEL YEAR 2007-2008, I-290/I-370, REGULAR CAB VEHICLES AND EXTENDED CAB VEHICLES WITHOUT A REAR SEAT AND EQUIPPED WITH A FRONT 60/40 SPLIT BENCH SEAT. THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 225, "CHILD RESTRAINT ANCHORAGE SYSTEMS." THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR FOR THE FRONT CENTER SEAT IS NOT ACCESSIBLE AND THE OWNER MANUAL DOES NOT INCLUDE INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING HOW TO USE THE TOP TETHER.
- Consequence: BOTH NHTSA AND GM DISCOURAGE PLACEMENT OF A CHILD IN A FRONT SEAT. NEVERTHELESS, THERE ARE INDIVIDUAL CIRCUMSTANCES THAT MAY REQUIRE PLACEMENT OF A CHILD IN A RESTRAINT IN THE FRONT CENTER SEATING POSITION OF THIS VEHICLE THAT DOES NOT OFFER A REAR SEAT. LACK OF ACCESS TO THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR AND A LACK OF INSTRUCTIONS AS TO HOW TO USE IT, MAY RESULT IN IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT. IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT CAN RESULT IN A REDUCTION IN THE RESTRAINT'S PERFORMANCE IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH AND AN INCREASED RISK OF INJURY OR DEATH TO THE CHILD SEATED IN THE RESTRAINT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL CUT A HOLE INTO THE BACK PANEL TRIM COVER TO ALLOW ACCESS TO THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR FOR THE FRONT CENTER SEAT POSITION AND WILL PROVIDE SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION AS TO USE IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT YET PROVIDED AN OWNER NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727 OR VISIT GM'S WEBSITE AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your vehicle! It sounds like you're really happy with the looks and interior, and that the V8 power is a big plus. It's great to hear that you haven't had any issues in your first year of ownership. Thanks for sharing your experience!
-
Hi there! I just wanted to share that I bought this car brand new back in 2010. While the 2.9 engine may be a little small, I think it's great in every other way!
-
It's great that the size is smaller, it makes it much more convenient!
-
The 4 cylinder automatic transmission managed to tow my 3,500 lb boat for 600 miles while getting 15mpg. I did need to add extra leaf springs in the back to alleviate rear end sag, but overall the power and ride were satisfactory. I would rate it 4 out of 5.
-
The 5 cylinder engine is both peppy and runs smoothly. This WT model is great for a truck, with its bare bones features like hand crank windows, manual adjust mirrors and seats. The only shortfall is that it lacks a box hitch, which should be standard on a work truck. Unfortunately, the options offered for this model didn't list the WT EXTENDED CAB 4WD 3.7L I5, which is what it is. But all in all, it's a little beast that will run for a long time.

While I loved the extended cab and low mileage when I purchased it, unfortunately, I did run into some issues with the electrical system. The radio would randomly come on and drain the battery, which was a bit frustrating. I took it to the Chevrolet dealership in Chanute, Kansas, but unfortunately, they were unable to fix the problem. After three weeks of trying to resolve the issue, I ultimately had to trade it in. Overall, it was a bit of a bummer, as I've never had a vehicle with this sort of problem before. I'm curious, have you had any similar experiences with vehicles that your dealerships couldn't fix?

I would not recommend purchasing this vehicle. While it may be suitable for short commutes without inclement weather, it can be difficult to hold a phone conversation due to the high level of interior noise. Additionally, the gas mileage is poor, only achieving 19mph with the inline 5cyl, and the ride can be rough with uncomfortable seats. It is worth noting that the vehicle was obtained at no cost, but the quality does not justify the high price. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why Chevy required a bail-out.

Replacing a headlamp shouldn't be this difficult. I had a tough time trying to pull out the burnt out bulb and insert the new one, which left my arm scratched up and bloody. Unfortunately, the space is hard to reach, making it a frustrating experience. I'm not even sure if I got the new bulb seated in there correctly.
