Common 1996 Chevrolet Blazer problems

The 1996 Chevrolet Blazer is known for several common problems, primarily related to the engine, transmission, and fuel system.

  • Defective Distributor: The 1996 Chevrolet Blazer can also suffer from internal defects within the distributor, which can affect the engine's operation. This can cause the engine to run rough or stall, potentially damaging the engine. The distributor may need to be overhauled or replaced if this issue arises.
  • Inaccurate Fuel Gauge: Another common problem with the 1996 Chevrolet Blazer is an inaccurate fuel gauge. This can lead to issues with fuel management and potentially stranding the driver if they run out of fuel unexpectedly.
  • Transmission Failure: The 1996 Chevrolet Blazer's transmission is also known to fail, causing issues with shifting and engine performance. This can result in the vehicle being unable to move or being stuck in a particular gear.
  • 4WD Engagement Problems: Some 1996 Chevrolet Blazer models may experience issues with engaging the 4WD system, particularly when switching from neutral to 4Hi. This can be related to a transfer case encoder motor issue, where corroded wires may prevent the transfer case from engaging properly.
  • Wiring and Electrical Issues: The 1996 Chevrolet Blazer is also known for wiring and electrical issues, which can affect various systems in the vehicle. This can include issues with the speedometer, tachometer, and transmission shifting after installing an aftermarket stereo.
  • Rear End Assembly Failure: In some cases, the 1996 Chevrolet Blazer's rear end assembly may fail, particularly after being rear-ended. This can result in the vehicle being unable to move in any direction, and may be caused by damage to the transmission or other drivetrain components.
  • Odometer and Shifter Gear Indicator Failure: Some 1996 Chevrolet Blazer models may experience issues with the odometer and shifter gear indicator, which can make it difficult to determine the vehicle's speed and gear. This can be caused by blown fuses or other electrical issues.
  • Fuel and Temperature Gauge Failure: In some cases, the 1996 Chevrolet Blazer's fuel and temperature gauges may fail, making it difficult to determine the vehicle's fuel level and engine temperature. This can be caused by blown fuses or other electrical issues.
  • Door Strikers Fracture: In rare cases, the door strikers on the 1996 Chevrolet Blazer may fracture, resulting in the door opening unexpectedly. This can be a safety hazard and may require the door strikers and attaching bolts to be replaced.

It is important to note that these issues may not affect all 1996 Chevrolet Blazer models, and some may experience different or additional problems. Regular maintenance and inspections can help to identify and address these issues before they become major problems.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-01-09
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: I RECENTLY WAS ON THE WAY HOME FROM DENVER, CO ON THE HIGHWAY. I STOPPED FOR FUEL NOTICING MY VEHICLE WAS CONSUMING MORE GAS THAN USUAL. I FUELED UP AND LEFT. WHEN I ARRIVED HOME I NOTICED GASOLINE DRIPPING ON THE GROUND. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED A MECHANIC. MY WIFE'S FATHER IS A CERTIFIED MECHANIC AND OWNS HIS OWN SHOP IN DENVER. HE FIXED THE LEAK, BUT TOLD ME THE LEAK STARTED BECAUSE THE FUEL LINES WERE RUBBING THE TRANSMISSION AND SHOWED ME. TO MY SURPRISE THE FUEL LINES WERE NOT SECURED IN THEIR PROPER LOCATION. I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY WORK DONE TO THE FUEL LINES OR EVEN ANY WORK DONE IN THE AREA OF THE PROBLEM. SO I TOOK THE BLAZER BACK HOME TO COLORADO SPRINGS. ABOUT A MONTH LATER I NOTICED THE FUEL SMELL WAS BACK. I POPPED THE HOOD BECAUSE I DID NOT SEE ANY FUEL LEAKING. THE FUEL WAS POURING OUT OF THE LINES AT THE TOP OF THE ENGINE WHERE THEY CONNECT TO THE COUPLINGS FOR REMOVAL OF THE ENGINE. I THEN DECIDED TO TAKE THE BLAZER TO A CLOSER LOCATION FOR REPAIR. THIS LOCATION WAS DANIELS CHEVROLET LOCATED IN COLORADO SPRINGS. THEY TOLD ME THAT THE O-RINGS WERE PINCHED AND THAT THE GASKET WHERE THE FUEL LINES GO INTO THE INTAKE MANIFOLD WAS BAD. I PAID THEM 480.60 TO REPAIR THE O-RINGS AND GASKET. FOUR DAYS LATER, THE SMELL OF FUEL IS BACK AND THE LEAK IS THERE AGAIN AT THE COUPLINGS ON THE BACK OF THE ENGINE WERE THE DEALERSHIP REPAIRED THEM THE FIRST TIME. NOW THE BLAZER IS BACK AT THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN FOR THE SECOND TIME FOR THE SAME ISSUE. THE VEHICLE IS MY WIFE'S, BUT DUE TO THE PROBLEM WITH THE FUEL, I HAVE BEEN DRIVING IT. THE FUEL LEAKS RIGHT ON TOP OF THE EXHAUST PIPE. THIS IS COULD BE A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION IF THE FUEL WERE TO IGNITE. MY WIFE HAD TAKEN THE BLAZER TO WORK THREE NIGHTS AFTER THE DEALERSHIP REPAIRED THE O-RINGS AND GASKET, SHE HAD ALMOST PASSED OUT WHILE DRIVING DUE TO THE FUEL VAPORS ENTERING THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. NOW THE DEALERSHIP WANTS TO CHARGE ME AGAIN FOR THE SAME REPAIR THEY DID. I AM AT WITS END. *TR

Negative 1996 Chevrolet Blazer car reviews

  1. Kane Denesik 2024-11-23

This car was great at first, but unfortunately, we started having lots of trouble with it over time. The cooling system seems to be the main issue, as the combination of aluminum and metal parts causes deterioration when using the factory recommended coolant. Despite trying multiple solutions, including 4 major flushes and replacing nearly everything in the coolant system, my mechanic has informed me that there is no recourse but to trade it in. Overall, I won't be buying another one of these cars.

  2. Jordy O'Connell 2024-11-20

This truck has had several electrical problems and major cooling-heating issues. Despite having 4 heater core problems, only 1 was covered by the warranty. Every other year after 60k, heat has been lost. However, I am confident in my decision to switch to a Tahoe or Yukon due to my loss of confidence in GM products.

  3. Trevion Keeling 2024-11-14

The Blazer is now a decade old, and although I have only owned it for two years, it has required some maintenance. In the past year, I have had to replace all the tires ($500.00) and the radiator system ($1,400.00). I have also installed new shocks. Unfortunately, the piece that moves the seat back and forth broke a while ago, and I now need a new brake system and intake manifold gauge. Despite these issues, the gas mileage is better than I anticipated for an SUV.

  4. Brendon Rau 2024-10-25

This truck has been nothing but problematic, despite being an exciting new purchase. It was bought new 7 years ago and has been babied to 49k miles. Unfortunately, the door bottoms have rusted out, even though it has been garaged and waxed every month. The paint is also in poor condition. The wind and interior noise is quite loud, making it difficult to have a conversation on the highway without getting a sore throat. The build quality of the interior and exterior is severely lacking, with fabric tears, blown fuses, and electrical problems occurring every year. While it pains me to say it, this car is a lemon, just like every other Blazer on the roads. If you're in the market for a new car, I would recommend considering a CRV or an Mseries Benz. Trust me, it's worth it!

  5. Devante Weissnat 2024-09-21

I experienced several issues with this vehicle right from the start, despite having purchased the used vehicle extended warranty. Unfortunately, at 93,000 miles, the engine ceased up and the rod spun a bearing, rendering the engine unusable. Despite having followed the scheduled maintenance and changing the oil every 3000 miles, the manufacturer's claim that these vehicles are maintenance-free until 100,000 miles is false. In light of this experience, I have decided to purchase a foreign truck that offers a quiet ride, no rattles, and an engine that will last over 100,000 miles without any issues. I am confident that the manufacturer of this truck will stand behind their product.

  1. Myles Schaden 2024-11-13

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share that I got my Blazer back in November '08 and it's been a great ride ever since. It's got 162,200 miles on it and still runs like a charm! The only issue I had was a loose battery, but that was an easy fix. Overall, I absolutely love my Blazer!

  2. Marcus O'Hara 2024-10-10

You paid about $8000 for this truck with 95k on it and it runs excellently. However, like with other cars (except Honda), it will give you a hassle if you don't take care of it, such as bending your crossmember and other things. Overall, it's good and very powerful. I love the Insta-Trac 4x4. When you floor it off the line in the rain, there's absolutely no skid at all! The only setback is that the windshield wipers could be better.

  3. Frederik Brakus 2024-09-25

First of all, the Blazers are well-built trucks that may not have the best colors and interior build, but they are fully dependable. They might not look great at first, but in the long run, they prove to be really reliable. They are one of those trucks that don't really feel or sound like a truck, but they can withstand the toughest weather conditions and environments of any kind, and still push out to their maximum power to keep you safe. I have had two Blazers, and the first was a '96, which is the same as my current one, and it saved my family's life after getting hit by a huge semi. We were able to drive away, and the Blazer is a truck you can depend on year-round. Personally, I would prefer this over Broncos 100%. I have had experience with both, and the Blazer is the better choice.

  4. Sidney Halvorson 2024-09-19

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my blazer. I bought it used with 45,000 miles on it and have since put on 103,000 miles. Within the first 6 months, I had to replace the transmission, brake system, and air conditioning system. It was definitely frustrating, but I understand that sometimes these things happen with used cars. Since then, I've had very few problems. I've had to replace the thermostat a few times and the battery a couple of times, but other than that, it's been smooth sailing. Overall, I think it's a great car for families. Thanks for listening!

  5. Lane Torp 2024-08-02

I see that you've owned your vehicle for over 3 years now, that's great! It's good to hear that you haven't had any major problems with it. It sounds like it handles off-road really well, even in thick snow and mud. However, I understand that the rear seat may not be the most comfortable, especially for taller passengers. It's good to know that the driver's seat is comfortable though. I agree that the front passenger could use better leg room and a better stereo arrangement. Perhaps steering wheel controls for the radio and cruise control would be a good addition.
