Common 1997 Chevrolet Blazer problems
The Chevrolet Blazer, produced from 1969 to 2005, is known for several common problems, particularly in the engine and transmission categories. The 1994, 2000, and 1994 models are considered the worst years for the Blazer, with issues like defective seat handles and gear shifting troubles.
- Faulty Fuel Gauge: The most commonly reported problem is a faulty fuel gauge, which tends to show up in the 2000 Blazer. This issue can lead to inaccurate fuel level readings, potentially causing drivers to run out of fuel unexpectedly.
- Transmission Failure: Transmission failure is a significant issue in the Chevrolet Blazer, particularly in the 2000 model. This problem can result in the vehicle not moving or shifting roughly, which can be dangerous during driving.
- Defective Distributor: Internal defects within the distributor can affect the way the engine operates, causing the vehicle to run rough or stall. This issue is found in the 2001 Chevy Blazer and some units produced during 1990-2005.
- Fuel Pump Failure: Fuel pump failure is a common problem in the Chevrolet Blazer, particularly in the 2005 model. Without an uninterrupted supply of fuel, the engine can stall or fail to start, which can be hazardous during driving.
- 4WD Engagement Issues: Some Chevy Blazer models, particularly those manufactured in 2019, 2002, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1998, 1997, and 1996, commonly experienced wiring and electrical issues related to 4WD engagement. These problems can result in the vehicle not engaging in 4WD mode or experiencing issues when switching from neutral to 4Hi.
- Weak Brakes: The 1997 Blazer has been reported to have weak brakes, causing a delay in slowing down when the brakes are applied. This issue can be dangerous, particularly during high-speed driving.
- Steering Issues: Some Blazer owners have reported issues with the steering, feeling that the steering wheel is stiffer than it should be and experiencing slack while driving on the highway. This can make it difficult to maintain a consistent driving lane.
These common problems in the Chevrolet Blazer can lead to inconvenience, safety risks, and costly repairs. It is essential for Blazer owners to be aware of these issues and address them promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of their vehicles.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-01-10
- VIN: 1GNCT18WXVK
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: 97 BLAZER WITH ORIGINAL LOW MILES HAD ENGINE STOP BOTH ON AND OFF THE HIGHWAY SEVERAL TIMES BUT IT WOULD START BACK UP. IN JAN WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND RPMS WENT UP. WE PULLED OFF AND FOUND THE TRANSMISSION WAS STUCK IN 3'RD GEAR. ALSO KEY WOULD NOT RELEASE TO REMOVE. ERRORS CAME UP P1860 P0785 AND P740 THAT REFER TO TRANSMISSION. THE PROBLEM WAS NOT TRANSMISSION BUT IGNITION SWITCH CONTACT BLOCK COMMONLY CALLED THE IGNITION SWITCH, IT IS THE CONTACT SECTION AND NOT THE KEY OR LOCK CYLINDER. THIS IGNITION SWITCH HAD ALREADY BEEN REPLACED ONCE. GM HAS A SERVICE BULLETIN #17006264 ON THE IGNITION SWITCH AND THIS APPEARS TO BE A BIG PROBLEM ACROSS MANY YEARS AND MODELS BUT NO RECALL WAS ISSUED. AN IGNITION SWITCH PROBLEM CAN CAUSE ENGINE TO DIE, LIGHTS TO GO OUT AND OTHER PROBLEMS BUT THE CONTACT FOR THE TRANSMISSION POWER SEEMS TO BE A COMMON FAILURE POINT. I REPLACED THE IGNITION SWITCH AND EVERYTHING WORKED FINE FOR ONE MONTH AND THEN THE PROBLEM RECURRED WITH ERRORS P1860 P0758 P0753 P0740 AND P0785. I TESTED THE IGNITION SWITCH POWER FROM RED/WHITE TO WHITE WIRE AND GOT NO POWER WHEN SWITCH WAS ON SO THE NEW SWITCH FAILED. I TESTED BY TEMPORARY JUMPING A FUSED LINE TO FUSE 24 OUTPUT AND THEN TRANSMISSION WORKED FINE AND THE KEY RELEASED. I AGAIN REPLACED THE IGNITION SWITCH CONTACT BLOCK UNDER WARRANTY AND NEW SWITCH WORKED FINE EXCEPT THE ERRORS CAME BACK ON P0740, P0785 AND P1860. TRANSMISSION WORKED OK THOUGH SO I TOOK THE BLAZER TO A CHEVY DEALERSHIP TO CHECK IT. THEY RESET CODE ERRORS , CHECKED WIRING, CONNECTIONS AND SWITCH. THE TECHNICIAN SAID MY WORK WAS CORRECT AND EVERYTHING CHECKS OUT FINE AND HE WAS NOT SURE WHY CODES CAME BACK. NOW OK. I EXAMINED THE ORIGINAL SWITCH AND THERE WAS NO PROBLEM WITH CONTACTS OR WIRES EVIDENT. THIS COULD BE A SWITCH DESIGN ISSUE OR THERE IS ANOTHER ISSUE CAUSING THIS. *TR

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: 1996-1997 4-WHEEL DRIVE CHEVROLET BLAZER, GMC JIMMY, AND OLDSMOBILE BRAVADA SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES. SOME OWNERS HAVE HAD TO PAY FOR REPLACEMENT OF THE UPPER BALL JOINTS THAT HAVE SEPARATED. GM IS PROVIDING A SPECIAL POLICY TO THESE OWNERS TO COVER UPPER BALL JOINT REPLACEMENT IF THE CUSTOMER FOLLOWED THE RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE FOR THE CHASSIS LUBRICATION AND THE VEHICLE STILL REQUIRED THE REPLACEMENT OF THE UPPER BALL JOINTS DUE TO SEPARATION.
- Consequence: THIS COULD CAUSE A LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE.
- Remedy: GM HAS DECIDED TO CONDUCT A CUSTOMER SATISFACTION CAMPAIGN TO REPLACE THE UPPER BALL JOINTS ON AFFECTED VEHICLES. THIS SPECIAL POLICY IS FOR A PERIOD OF 8 YEARS OR 100,000 MILES, WHICHEVER OCCURS FIRST, FROM THE DATE THE VHEICLE WAS ORIGINALLY PLACED IN SERVICE, REGARDLESS OF OWNERSHIP. This vehicle is still very reliable with 145000 miles on it and everything works.

Hi there! I see that you had a Blazer for a year and decided to sell it. It sounds like you had some issues with the drivetrain and some leaks, which can definitely be frustrating. It's great that you enjoyed the powerful 4.3 V6 engine and the awesome LT trim though! It's understandable that with over 100k miles, maintenance costs can add up and become overwhelming. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!
-
The Blazer has been a great and dependable car for the last 5 years. Although I would consider other makes at this time, I would definitely buy another Chevy in the future. As an SUV owner, I understand that gas mileage is not always the best. However, I do find the hump in the front passenger seat on the floor to be uncomfortable during long drives. I have experienced some minor problems, such as the handles to recline the seats breaking and the upholstery on the driver's seat not holding up well (which has since been replaced). Additionally, the paint on the windshield wipers has peeled off. Overall, I am very satisfied with this vehicle and was happy with my purchase.
-
I hope you don't mind me saying, but I think Chevy Blazers are great!
-
We're glad to say that we've had a positive experience with the Blazer, despite a few minor issues. While the side mirrors shake on the highway and the fuel consumption is heavy, it's still a fun ride overall.

The lower rod bearing failed and caused significant damage to the motor at 85k. However, we were able to rebuild the Delco motor at a cost of 5k and install it. Additionally, at 80k, we had to replace the manifold gaskets due to the failure of the 150000 mile coolant, which cost around 1200 dollars. Although there were other failures that required out-of-pocket expenses and time in the shop, we were able to address them effectively. Once the rebuilt motor is installed, it will perform exceptionally well.

I really like my truck, and although I've had to spend quite a bit of money on repairs, it has been worth it. Over the past two years, I've spent over $5,000 on various repairs, but thankfully, I had purchased an extended warranty when I first bought the car, which helped to offset some of the costs. Despite its reputation for issues, my truck has been able to handle everything I've thrown at it when it's not in the shop. It is a gas guzzler, averaging 13-15 MPG, but that's the price you pay for owning an SUV.

If you're looking for a car that will give you plenty of opportunities to visit the repair shop and spend time without your vehicle, then this might be the car for you. Despite my best efforts to take good care of my Blazer and keep up with regular maintenance, it seemed to always break down. I had to deal with major repairs such as the transmission, suspension, alternator, exhaust, and more. Even with an extended warranty, the Chevy service was a hassle and it took weeks to get my car back. Additionally, the gas tank was too small for such a guzzler and the stereo broke three times. However, I must admit that it was fun to drive when it was working, but unfortunately, it spent more time in the shop than on the road.

This truck was a great vehicle! It was incredibly reliable, and any issues it had were my own fault. It hardly needed anything other than the usual oil change, and while the gas mileage wasn't great (I noticed it wasted more gas than my Tahoe with a V8), it still served me well. The power wasn't amazing considering the engine size (4.3 with only 190hp), but it got the job done.

I have owned this Blazer since it was new and it is about to hit 100k miles. Despite its age, the vehicle has had minimal issues. The only problems I have encountered are excessive paint chips, which were resolved by a dealer repaint, a vacuum issue causing intermittent 4WD, a coolant leak, a faulty fuel sender, a bad hazard/brake light/turn signal switch causing intermittent brake lights, and a few minor issues such as replacing speakers and fixing body molding. The climate control diverter has also been delayed in switching from floor to defrost, likely due to a vacuum leak. However, none of these issues have been major problems.
