Common 1999 Chevrolet Blazer problems
The 1999 Chevy Blazer has been known to have several common problems, primarily related to its air compressor, fuel level sensor, and electrical system.
One of the most common issues reported by owners is related to the air compressor. The air compressor is responsible for maintaining proper air pressure in the vehicle's tires. If the air compressor is faulty, it may cause the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) light to come on, indicating that there is an issue with one or more of the tires. This can be caused by a slow leak or flat tire, or by the air pressure being too low or too high.
Another common problem reported by owners is related to the fuel level sensor. The fuel level sensor is responsible for measuring the amount of fuel in the vehicle's gas tank. If the fuel level sensor is faulty, it may cause the fuel gauge to give inaccurate readings, making it difficult for the driver to know how much fuel is left in the tank.
The 1999 Chevy Blazer has also been known to have electrical system problems. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there have been 21 complaints related to the electrical system in the 1999 Chevy Blazer, with an average mileage of 56,972 miles.
In addition to these common problems, some owners have reported issues with the fuel pump, injectors, and mass airflow sensor. These issues can cause the vehicle to sputter or have trouble starting, particularly when the engine is cold.
Overall, the 1999 Chevy Blazer has a number of common problems that can affect its reliability and performance. While some of these issues can be resolved with simple repairs, others may require more extensive work. It is important for potential buyers to be aware of these issues and to have the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic before making a purchase.

DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE BRAKE PIPE UNION FOR SIGNS OF LEAKING BRAKE FLUID AND REPLACE THE UNION IF NECESSARY. OUR VEHICLE IS A 1999 BLAZER THAT APPEARS TO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM, BUT CHEVROLET CLAIMS THERE WASN'T A RECALL ISSUED FOR OUR VEHICLE. WE THINK IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED. OUR VEHICLE DOESN'T STOP WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED, BUT NEEDS A LONGER STOPPING TIME AND DISTANCE. IT IS AN UNSAFE CONDITION. ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-06-16
- VIN: 1GNDT13W5X2
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: 1999 CHEVROLET BLAZER WITH A V6 ENGINE HAD A PREMATURE ENGINE FAILURE AT 87K MILES. A HAIR LINE CRACK WAS DISCOVERED IN A CYLINDER USING A DYE TEST. THE MACHINIST WHO INSPECTED THE ENGINE BELIEVES IT WAS CREATED AS THE RESULT OF THE CORROSIVE ACTION OF COOLANT USED BY GM. CHEVROLET SHOWED NO INTEREST IN INSPECTING THE ENGINE. WITHOUT THE AFOREMENTIONED, I INVESTIGATED MYSELF, AND CAN ONLY CONCLUDE THAT A HEAD BOLT WAS NOT PROPERLY SEALED DURING MANUFACTURING, ALLOWING COOLANT TO PENETRATE THE BOLT AREA AROUND THE REAR CYLINDER IN QUESTION. THIS CONDITION CREATED A WEAKENING OF THE CYLINDER WALL OVER TIME CAUSING THE CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. I'VE BEEN COMMUNICATING WITH CHEVROLET FOR OVER TWO YEARS WITH NO SUCCESS.

SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-06-01
- VIN: 1GNCT18W5XK
- Components: SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I AM SHOCKED TO FIND OUT THAT THERE ARE SO MANY OTHER PEOPLE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE ABS BRAKES AND THE FRONT END BALL JOINTS. I AM ACTUALLY AFRAID TO DRIVE MY BLAZER AFTER READING ABOUT THE PROBLEMS. I LIVE IN A SMALL TOWN IN THE MOUNTAINS AND HAVE TO DRIVE MOUNTAIN ROADS AND ALONG A RIVER TO GET TO A BIGGER CITY. I AVERAGE ABOUT ONCE A MONTH THIS TRIP AND IF I MY BLAZER WAS TO HAVE A WHEEL FALL OFF BECAUSE OF A BAD BALL JOINT SYSTEM I AND MAYBE OTHERS WOULD BE DEAD OR SERIOUSLY HURT. I HAVE OVER THE YEARS REPLACED MY BALL JOINTS SEVERAL TIMES AS THEY KEEP GOING BAD, MUCH MORE THAN JUST NORMAL WEAR IT APPEARS. I ALSO HAVE FOR THE LAST 6 MONTHS OR SO HAVE HAD THE ABS LIGHT COME ON AND THE ABS BRAKES COME INTO PLAY WHEN SLOWING DOWN OR COMING TO A STOP ON DRY ROADS. THERE ARE TIMES THE LIGHT IS ON WHEN I FIRST START MY BLAZER AND HAVEN'T EVEN MOVED YET. A MECHANIC THAT LOOKED AT IT SAID THAT IT APPEARED THAT THE SENSOR WOULD NEED REPLACING. I DID NOT HAVE IT DONE AS IT WAS GOING TO BE SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR THE REPAIR. WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO HAVE A RECALL? HOW CAN PEOPLE TELL YOU OF THE PROBLEMS THEY TOO ARE HAVING, WHEN THESE PROBLEMS ARE NOT PUBLICLY ANNOUNCED AND THEY HAVE NO IDEA THAT IT IS NOT JUST THEIR VEHICLE. LIKE ME, I HAD NO IDEA THERE WERE THESE PROBLEMS GOING ON FOR OTHER PEOPLE TOO. LIKE I SAID I NOW AM AFRAID ABOUT HAVING A MAJOR ACCIDENT BECAUSE OF THE BALL JOINT/SUSPENSION PROBLEM THAT IS TALKED ABOUT ON THIS WEBSITE. I CAN NOT AFFORD TO BUY A NEW VEHICLE. CAN'T WE GET HELP BEFORE SOMEONE HAS TO BE HURT OR KILLED? *TR
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-11-05
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: 1999 CHEVROLET BLAZER LT - MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH (COMMON PROBLEM!) IS MALFUNCTIONING. TURN SIGNAL/FLASHER RELAY IS CONSTANTLY CLICKING WHETHER SIGNALS ARE IN USE OR NOT -- UNLESS THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED. GOOD SIGN OF AN ELECTRICAL SHORT. THE CAUSE OF THIS ISSUE IS THE GREASE INSIDE THE SWITCH, APPLIED AT THE FACTORY, RUNNING FROM CONTACT TO CONTACT. THIS SWITCH INCLUDES THE WIPERS, CRUISE CONTROL, TURN SIGNALS, HAZARDS, AND CAN ALSO CAUSE VEHICLE LIGHTING (HEADLIGHTS, BRAKE LIGHTS) TO MALFUNCTION. MANY CASES INCLUDE NON-WORKING BRAKE LIGHTS! OTHERS HAVE REPORTED SMOKE COMING FROM THE SWITCH AS THE CONTACTS ARE SHORTED BY THE GREASE. I INHERITED THIS VEHICLE FROM MY GRANDFATHER, WHO COULDN'T HEAR THE RELAY FIRING -- IT IS THE ONLY INDICATOR INSIDE THE VEHICLE THAT SOMETHING MAY BE GOING WRONG. THERE ARE NO VISIBLE INDICATORS INSIDE THE VEHICLE LETTING A PERSON KNOW THEIR LIGHTS ARE MALFUNCTIONING. AS THERE IS NO RECALL FOR THIS YEAR OF BLAZER (THOUGH I UNDERSTAND OTHER YEARS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM RECALLED), I WILL BE REPLACING THE SWITCH ON MY OWN. DEALER QUOTED THE PRICE FOR THE PART ALONE WELL OUT OF MY PRICE RANGE (NEVERMIND LABOR), SO I'M GOING TO HAVE TO SHOP AROUND TO GET THE VEHICLE IN SAFE DRIVING CONDITION. THANKS FOR READING. I APPRECIATE IT! *TR

- Summary: I HAD TO HAVE THE DRIVESHAFT IN MY 1999 CHEVY BLAZER REPLACED IN MARCH 2011. EXACTLY ONE WEEK LATER MY SON WAS DRIVING TO SCHOOL CAYUGA-ONONDAGA BOCES IN AURBAN WHEN THE DRIVE SHAFT FELL OUT CAUSING THE BLAZER ENTIRE REAR-END TO SEIZE UP THROWING THE VEHICLE ALMOST MAKING MY SON GO DOWN OVER THE BRIDGE. THE SCHOOL CAME AND TOWED HIM BACK AND LOOKED AT IT' THE BOLT THAT HOLDS THE DRIVESHAFT IN WAS NOT THERE, AS IF THEY FORGOT TO TIGHTEN IT OR FORGET TO PUT IT ON ALL TOGETHER. THERE IS NO EVIDENCE THAT THE BOLT WAS PULLED OFF OR BROKEN, YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE BY THE TREADS. I HAD THE TRAINED AUTO MECHANICS AT THE SCHOOL CALL OVER TO PULLEN'S AND THEY WERE RUDE, SAID THEY DID THEIR JOB AND THERE WAS NOTHING TO DO TO HELP US.. VERY RUDE' ALSO, THE DRIVESHAFT DIDN'T HAVE ANY GREASE FITTINGS SO IT WOULDN'T HAVE LASTED 6 MONTHS TOP. THIS GARAGE DID A BAD JOB AND NEED TO LEARN HOW TO DO THEIR JOB RIGHT' I DIDN'T PAY OVER $500 TO HAVE MY VEHICLE FIXED FOR ONE WEEK. *TR

You bought the vehicle new and have taken excellent care of it, never missing any maintenance appointments. Unfortunately, you have experienced a continual problem with the driver's door hinge, locks, and window, which has been repaired twice but still remains questionable. Additionally, you had to pay $2300 to replace the 4WD transfer case at only 68k miles, and the 4WD system is still questionable. Despite these issues, you love the look of the vehicle, the way it drives, and the ample power and room inside. However, you are very disappointed in the transmission and the detailing of the vehicle. Based on your experience, you would probably not buy another GM SUV.

I purchased this small SUV back in 2001 with only 24k miles on it. Currently, it has 50k miles and I plan on keeping it until it reaches at least 150k miles. The body and interior still look great, and it all comes down to how well you maintain it. Although it may not ride as smoothly as newer car-like SUVs or get the same mileage, it won't cost you a small fortune to own. I had a minor issue with a leak in the oil line hose, but it was quickly fixed under warranty. I tend to keep my vehicles for a long time, and I have friends who have put over 160k miles on their older Blazers, and they still run like a charm.

I bought this vehicle from a GM technician after my 87' S-10 Blazer was on its last leg, and I must say that I like it a lot compared to what I had. The interior is very nice, and the stereo is good for being O.E. The handling and ride quality are good for its size. While you shouldn't expect to beat any speed records with it, it can get up and go when you need it to. I installed an aftermarket cold air intake, which has improved gas mileage and acceleration a bit. It is definitely a step above some others out there in its class for the price.

I've had a great time driving this truck for the past 3 years. Although it was leased and the lease is ending in May, I'm feeling a bit sad to let it go. Unfortunately, the residual is too high and it's not affordable for me to purchase outright. However, I must say that I haven't had any problems with this truck and it's been a joy to drive with all the luxurious features it offers. It may not be the best for speeding through corners, but it's a truck after all. If you're looking for speed, a sports car would be a better choice! :-) Overall, I've had a blast driving this truck and I would definitely recommend it. I'm hoping to get another one when the lease comes due.

Hi there! I just wanted to share that I've had my blazer for 4 years and it has been such a great car. I've put 60,000 miles on her and she has been so dependable. Unfortunately, I have to trade her in because I can't afford the rising gas prices and I need something smaller. Overall, this car has given me everything I needed in terms of ride, power, room, and features. I did have an issue with the ball joints on the front axle, but it was covered under warranty and the repair only took a day. I'm definitely going to miss her!

I recently purchased this vehicle from the original owner with 120K miles. It looked great and ran decently for about 2 weeks. The previous owner had replaced the radiator, transmission fluid, and plugs, which gave me confidence in the vehicle. However, I soon discovered that it needed several repairs, including a new fuel pump, window motors, AC compressor, radiator hoses, and fixing oil leaks. Unfortunately, the transfer case was also blown out. Overall, it was a costly experience and I would advise others to stay away from this type of truck. I ended up trading it in for a more reliable SUV, a 4Runner. Thank you for considering my experience.

After reaching 50,000 miles, my experience with this Blazer has been quite a roller coaster ride. Unfortunately, there have been a number of issues, one after another, including lots of road noise and various parts coming loose and making noise. It has left us stranded on the side of the road 3-4 times, which has been quite frustrating. Based on my experience, I would not recommend purchasing another GM product. It's disappointing to not have the dependability you would expect from a $30,000 car/truck. Overall, the quality of this vehicle is poor and it was poorly built.

Although I have experienced some issues with this vehicle, I have taken the necessary steps to address them and ensure its optimal performance. I have had some minor repairs done, such as replacing the plastic seat handle and rear gate, as well as more significant repairs like replacing the door lock mechanism, ball joints, and servicing the 4WD. Additionally, I have addressed some electrical problems, such as the AC staying on when switched to the 'off' position, lights flickering, and dashboard gauge visibility. Overall, I am confident in the vehicle's ability to perform well with proper maintenance and care.
Bell Bergstrom 2024-07-22
I purchased the car when it had 18K miles and it was a joy to drive due to its beautiful design. However, I encountered some mechanical issues such as premature wear of the front suspension, which led to an NHTSA investigation into the ball joints. Additionally, there were problems with the coolant and engine seal/gasket failures, among other issues. Fortunately, we had purchased an extended warranty for about $5k, which saved us from spending an additional $10k on repairs later. So far, we have spent just over $15k on repairs, in addition to regular maintenance. Although it is difficult to admit, I am hesitant to purchase another American car until I can trust their reliability again.

Hi there! I purchased this vehicle 3 years ago with 49,000 miles on it. Since then, it has been a reliable ride for me. Although, I have had to replace the alternator and the driver window sometimes gets stuck open (usually when it's raining), but it starts working again after a couple of minutes. Additionally, both front doors sag, the window molding is coming up, the top compartment buttons are broken, and the mirror flap on both visors have broken off. Unfortunately, there is now a leak in the intake manifold gasket, and the 4wd is not working. Despite these issues, I still really like this vehicle, but I am considering parting with it due to the gas mileage. It gets 18mpg on the interstate. Thank you for your time!
