Common 1998 Chevrolet Blazer problems

The 1998 Chevrolet Blazer is known to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. These issues include leaking lower intake manifold gaskets, worn distributor gears causing erratic ignition problems, front wheel bearing/hub assemblies, fluctuating gas gauge indicating a failing fuel pump or sending unit, and rear window wiper motor failure.

Leaking lower intake manifold gaskets is a common issue in the 1998 Chevrolet Blazer. This problem can lead to coolant leaks and engine overheating, which may cause severe damage to the engine if not addressed promptly.

Worn distributor gears can also cause erratic ignition problems in the 1998 Chevrolet Blazer. The distributor gear is responsible for distributing the spark to the spark plugs, and if it wears out unevenly, it can cause the engine to misfire or run poorly. This issue can be challenging to diagnose and may require the replacement of the distributor gear or the entire distributor assembly.

Front wheel bearing/hub assemblies are another common problem in the 1998 Chevrolet Blazer. These components are subject to wear and tear due to the vehicle's weight and usage, and they may need to be replaced periodically. The price of replacement can vary depending on the lifespan expected, and it is essential to address this issue promptly to avoid further damage to the vehicle's suspension and steering systems.

Fluctuating gas gauge is another common issue in the 1998 Chevrolet Blazer, which may indicate a failing fuel pump or sending unit. The fuel pump is responsible for delivering fuel to the engine, and if it fails, the vehicle may not run correctly or may not start at all. The sending unit is responsible for measuring the fuel level in the tank and transmitting this information to the gauge. If either of these components fails, the gas gauge may fluctuate or give inaccurate readings, which can be dangerous if the vehicle runs out of fuel unexpectedly.

Rear window wiper motor failure is also a common problem in the 1998 Chevrolet Blazer. The wiper motor is responsible for moving the wiper blades across the rear window, and if it fails, the wiper blades may not move or may move slowly, reducing visibility in adverse weather conditions. This issue can be addressed by replacing the wiper motor or the entire wiper assembly.

In addition to these common problems, the 1998 Chevrolet Blazer has also been subject to several recalls, including issues with the service brakes, suspension, and exterior lighting. It is essential to address these issues promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

In conclusion, the 1998 Chevrolet Blazer has several common problems that owners should be aware of, including leaking lower intake manifold gaskets, worn distributor gears, front wheel bearing/hub assemblies, fluctuating gas gauge, and rear window wiper motor failure. These issues can be addressed by regular maintenance and prompt repairs, but they can also be costly and time-consuming. It is essential to address these issues promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

Negative 1998 Chevrolet Blazer car reviews

  1. Logan Stanton 2025-01-08

After owning my 1998 Chevrolet Blazer LS for 10 years, I thought it would be helpful to share my experience with it. I purchased the car in 2001 with 36K miles on it. Unfortunately, after the warranty expired at 60K miles, the car started to require a lot of maintenance. Despite reaching out to Chevy for assistance, I was left to deal with the issues on my own. The car needed repairs for the driver's seat lever, all mirrors, passenger seat lock, power windows, rear hatch hydraulic lift levers, distributor (twice), heater core, new radiator, shocks (twice), and it went through a lot of brake pads. Additionally, the check engine light was on for transmission slippage for about 45K miles (which I decided not to fix). Only after everything was fixed twice did it run up to 210K miles. I'm glad to have moved on from it.

  2. Jaylan Mann 2024-11-27

This SUV used to belong to your grandfather, and it was also mine. While it may not be the most exciting vehicle, it certainly gets the job done. It handles like a boat and rides like a Buick.

  3. Zion Howe 2024-11-22

This 1998 LT 4WD Blazer has been a disappointment despite my initial hopes of buying American. However, I can confidently say that I have taken all necessary steps to ensure its proper maintenance and upkeep. Although I have experienced some electrical issues, I have been able to address them promptly and effectively. I have replaced the alternator twice and the battery cables once, which has resolved the problem. While these repairs were costly, I am confident that my car is now in good condition and will continue to serve me well. As a nurse, I value my hard-earned money and I am pleased to have made a wise investment in this vehicle.

  4. Bill Schinner 2024-10-11

I have extensive experience with '86 Blazers, having owned one for 14 years, and can confidently say that this particular model is a major disappointment. Many of the issues expressed by others, such as problems with the multifunction switch, oil lines, idler arm/tie rod joints, torsion bars causing vehicle lean, engine pings, A/C leaks, air bag light coming on intermittently, and rear hatch leaks, are all too familiar to me.

  5. Percy McLaughlin 2024-09-24

I owned a 2001 Chevy S 10 ZR2 truck and absolutely loved it. Unfortunately, I lost it in my divorce. Recently, I purchased a 1998 ZR2 Blazer, assuming that all ZR2s were built the same. However, I have encountered some major issues with this vehicle in the short time that I have owned it. The 4x4 kept switching in and out of 4 wheel drive on its own, and the front end needs work, including ball joints, etc. Additionally, the service engine light comes on and the vehicle runs very poorly, as if it's not getting any gas and has no power. However, after a few days, it runs great again. It seems that this is a common issue with the 1998 model. In hindsight, I regret not researching the issues before purchasing it. It's important to think twice before making a purchase like this.

Positive 1998 Chevrolet Blazer car reviews

  1. Raoul Turcotte 2024-10-13

This car is really great! The styling is fantastic, the interior is super comfortable, and the engine is really strong. Honestly, there isn't much more you could ask for in a car. Sure, I had to get a Transmission Rebuild at 81,500 miles due to a broken sealant, but other than that, this car has been absolutely flawless in terms of service and reliability. It's always ready to go and get the job done!

  2. Archibald Brown 2024-09-27

I purchased the car used with 110k miles and installed a new transmission at 115,000 miles. The front end has required regular maintenance, including ball joints, among other things. However, the 4X4 is fantastic! Prior to the fuel pump going out, I was getting great gas mileage of about 21mpg, but now it's the standard 16mpg. The interior boasts luxurious features, my favorite being the auto shut off of any light or charger to prevent battery drain. The Blazer has now accumulated over 150,000 miles and unfortunately, the radiator has rusted all the way through to the heating coils. Despite my financial difficulties and limited maintenance, the car has been very reliable with minimal problems.

The vehicle has proven to be reliable with only a few minor issues. After 40000 miles, new brake rotors were needed all around and a new battery was required shortly after. The door speakers were also replaced due to a blown woofer. However, overall, there have been no other problems. The leather seats are very comfortable and I have not experienced any issues with the rear seats. The vehicle is capable of driving on deeply rutted off-road tracks, although it may set up an oscillation of the shocks/rear suspension. The vehicle's drive ability in 2&4 WD is generally effective and it corners well enough if required.

Overall, the car has done very well. It has required little repairs and handles long distance travel well. Through any weather, this SUV has been reliable. However, I must admit that the windshield wipers have been a bit of a nuisance to me!

Other than the wiper motor, I love everything about my Blazer. It's comfortable to drive, roomy, and a blast to drive.
