The Buick Verano (Chinese: 威朗) is a compact car manufactured by SAIC-GM for the GM's Buick brand since 2010. It debuted at the North American International Auto Show on January 10, 2011, during a preview of Buick's then upcoming 2012 model. It is the first compact marketed by Buick in the United States since the 1998 Buick Skylark. Verano is Spanish for summer.

The Verano, the Buick Excelle GT, which was developed for the Chinese market, and the Opel Astra/Vauxhall Astra sedan share General Motors' Delta II platform with the Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Orlando, and Opel/Vauxhall Zafira Tourer. In the US, it was manufactured by General Motors from 2012 to 2017.

First generation (2011)

Jim Federico, Executive Director and Vehicle Chief Engineer for Verano, led the vehicle development team and David Lyon, Buick design director, styled the exterior.

The Verano is essentially a North American-market version of the Chinese-market compact Buick Excelle GT. The Verano's unibody construction uses galvanized steel for its front fenders, hood, roof and door panels and thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) bumper covers. It incorporates acoustical laminated glass, triple door seals, a five-layer interior roof liner, sound absorbing mats, recycled denim insulation and specially manufactured 18-inch forged alloy wheels, which minimize road noise. Buick's VentiPorts reappeared at the Verano's introduction, a styling feature unique to Buick dating back to 1949.

The standard powertrain is a 2.4 L Ecotec direct-injected DOHC I4 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The 2.4 L engine is rated 180 horsepower (130 kW; 180 PS) at 6,700 rpm and 171 lb⋅ft (232 N⋅m; 24 kg⋅m) of torque at 4,900 rpm. The engine is flex-fuel capable, meaning it can use either gasoline, or E85 ethanol (2012–13) • 2.4L, or any combination of the two fuels. EPA fuel economy estimates are 21 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km; 25 mpg‑imp) city and 32 mpg‑US (7.4 L/100 km; 38 mpg‑imp) highway for gasoline. A 2012 on-road mixed highway-city review by the website MPGOMATIC showed an average 26.5 mpg‑US (8.9 L/100 km; 31.8 mpg‑imp) on E85, and 29 mpg‑US (8.1 L/100 km; 35 mpg‑imp) for gasoline.

A 2.0 L turbocharged version became available in late 2012, for the 2013 model year, as did a 6-speed manual transmission. The 2.0 L turbo engine is rated at 250 horsepower (186 kW; 253 PS) and 260 lb⋅ft (353 N⋅m; 36 kg⋅m) of torque. GM estimated acceleration from 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) is 6.2 seconds, matching the number posted by the Buick Regal GS.

For 2016, the Verano added a new Sport Touring Edition which included unique 18″ aluminum black pocket wheels and a rear lip spoiler.

The Verano was phased out from the US market after the 2017 model year. The second generation Verano is sold exclusively in China, leaving Buick without an entry-level sedan in the US market.

Common 2012 Buick Verano problems

The Buick Verano, manufactured between 2012 and 2017, has been known to have several common problems that affect its performance and reliability. This article will discuss these issues based on complaints from owners of this car.

  1. Excessive Oil Consumption: Some of the earlier models of the Buick Verano, particularly the 2012 and 2013 models, have been reported to consume excessive amounts of engine oil. This issue is often caused by abnormal wear of pistons and piston rings, which can lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly.
  2. Malfunctioning BBT Solenoids: The BBT solenoids in some Buick Verano vehicles tend to malfunction and experience premature failure. When this happens, drivers may notice rough idling, poor acceleration, increased fuel consumption, and overall poor engine performance.
  3. Engine Stalling: The engine in some Buick Verano vehicles is prone to stalling while driving, which can be a significant safety concern. This issue is often caused by a defective or malfunctioning crankshaft position sensor.
  4. Infotainment and Navigation System Malfunctions: The infotainment and navigation system in some Buick Verano vehicles tends to malfunction, causing the radio function to lose all preset stations, the touchscreen to become unresponsive, and the screen to go black when backing up or performing a software update. In many cases, these issues require the replacement of the entire unit.
  5. TPMS Sensor Malfunctions: The TPMS sensors in some Buick Verano vehicles are prone to malfunctioning, causing the TPMS light to illuminate on the dashboard.
  6. Water Pump Cooling Leaks: The water pump in some Buick Verano vehicles tends to develop cooling leaks before reaching 100,000 miles, which can lead to engine overheating and damage.
  7. Clear Coat Peeling: The clear coat in some Buick Verano vehicles tends to peel off, which can affect the car's appearance and value.
  8. Blind Spot Monitor System Control Module Malfunctions: The blind spot monitor system control module in some 2014-2017 Buick Verano vehicles is prone to malfunctioning and experiencing premature failure.
  9. Noisy Wheel Bearings: The wheel bearings in some Buick Verano vehicles are prone to becoming noisy between 100,000 and 150,000 miles, which can be a significant annoyance for drivers.
  10. Broken Plastic Components of Window Regulators: The plastic components of the window regulators in some Buick Verano vehicles are prone to breaking over time, causing the affected window not to roll up or down.

These common problems in the Buick Verano can significantly affect the car's performance, reliability, and overall value. It is essential for owners of this vehicle to be aware of these issues and to address them promptly to ensure the safety and longevity of their cars.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-01
  • VIN: 1G4PP5SK7C4

  • Summary: The passenger airbag indicator goes on and off with person in passenger seat. We first noticed this Summer 2023. It has gotten worse. Now a passenger can shift weight slightly one way or another and cause the indicator status to change which disables the airbag. Dealer also confirmed (4/16/24) DTC code B0081(internal malfunction with passenger presence module). I have recently learned there was a warranty extension for this failure (which had expired) which I was unaware of. I now have a vehicle which I feel is unsafe to travel with a passenger! If GM is aware of the problem and the dealer (imperial Chevrolet) has charged me $160 diagnostic fee for a known problem and tells me it will cost approx. $1,800 to repair/replace the sensor and module.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-05
  • VIN: 1G4PP5sk4c4
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Technical Service Bulletin #13-06-01-003H (TSB 003H) in regards to GM’s 2.4L engines & excessive oil consumption. (https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2016/MC-10116880-9999.pdf) This release not only concedes a persistent issue found in at least six GM models, but more importantly fails to acknowledge the serious and fatal risks as a result of the Oil Consumption Defect. As a direct result of GM's known defect, I was left in a dangerous situation. I crossed a divided residential street, engine stalled and the vehicle turned off, stranded in the middle. It is not unreasonable to imagine other similar situations occurring, leaving people directly susceptible to serious injury or death. Here, the dipstick was completely dry. It took two quarts before any oil appeared on the dipstick. The oil light did not illuminate and I was approximately 1500 miles from my next scheduled oil service. The diagnosis: pistons excessively worn from lack of oil, engine failure. My situation is not unique. https://www.carcomplaints.com/Buick/Verano/2012/engine/engine.shtml Sanchez et al v. General Motors LLC, found in favor of the plaintiffs. The issue: the Oil Consumption Defect, found in 2010-13 Equinox & Terrain, both vehicles listed on TSB 003H with the 2012 Verano. https://www.classaction.org/media/sanchez-et-al-v-general-motors-llc.pdf The primary cause: faulty piston rings and defective crankcase ventilation system, leading to excessive oil consumption. The oil monitoring systems are defective. “Reliance on the [system] instead encourages owners to drive with a false sense of security.” “Problems include, but are not limited to: unanticipated engine shutdowns, engine stalls.” “[This] is a substantial safety concern because [failure]… cannot be reasonably anticipated or predicted.” To allow GM to ignore this documented and persistent issue, without further investigation, would be a failure carry out the NHTSA’s core duty: to save lives and prevent injuries. Thank you.

My car is still not running and has been down since October 22, 2021. The dealership is stating that they cannot fix my car because there is not an open recall, but this recall was in 2016 and I was never made aware of the recall nor was I said any correspondences about this recall.

  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: PURCHASED THE CAR USED WITH 65K MILES AND EVERYTHING SEEMED GOOD. AT AROUND 72K THE CAR HAD A LOUD PINGING NOISE. I CHECKED THE OIL AND THE DIP STICK WAS DRY. I CHANGED THE OIL AND FILTER TO BE SAFE. THE CAR HAS BEEN USING A QUART OF OIL EVERY 2000 MILES. AT 80K THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. IN PA THAT MEANS YOU DO NOT PASS INSPECTION SO WE HAD TO HAVE THE ENGINE SERVICED. THE BILL WAS ONLY $212 DOLLARS FOR TWO VALVE POSITION SOLENOIDS. I DID A COMPLETE OIL AND FILTER CHANGE THEN ALSO. AT 1712 MILES LATER THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN, THE ENGINE OIL WAS 1,5 QUARTS LOW AGAIN. I GUESS I AM IN THE SAME BOAT AS MOST OF THE OTHERS WITH HIGH OIL CONSUMPTION, SHAFTED BY GM AGAIN. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW A COMPANY CAN SELL SOMETHING SO BADF AND GET AWAY WITH IT. IT SEEMS ALL OF THE GM VEHICLES WITH THE 22.4 LITER 4 CYLINDER ENGINE HAVE THESE ISSUES. THE SHAME IS THE CAR ITSELF SO FAR HAS BEEN PRETTY GOOD EXCEPT FOR THE OIL ISSUE. WHEN WILL GM START TO STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT?

Negative 2012 Buick Verano car reviews

  1. Carlo Quitzon 2024-10-05

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the car I bought. It was definitely exciting to finally have it, even though it was used and had around 80,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I did run into a few issues with it. For example, the driver's side front seat heater had a short in it that the dealer didn't tell me about, so I had to spend around $500 to have it fixed. Additionally, about 6 months after I bought it, it started throwing codes and shutting off. The code was the CAM position sensor, and even after several replacements, it's still throwing codes. Overall, I don't think it's worth the investment. While it's a cute car, there are several problems with it that you should be aware of.

  2. Horacio Gislason 2024-08-12

Buick was aware of the issues with the Verano's engine, but unfortunately did not issue a recall like some other car manufacturers did. The engine had a high oil consumption and the timing system failed prematurely. In fact, a class action suit was filed in 2022 due to these issues. I had to part ways with my Verano at only 93k miles, which was disappointing. As a result, I have decided not to purchase from Buick again.

Hi there! I noticed that you mentioned experiencing some condensation on the exterior front window when running the air conditioner. According to the dealer, this is because the defroster vent never completely closes, which allows cold air to exit and causes condensation to form in certain temperature and humidity conditions. I understand that this can be frustrating, especially since the windshield wiper must be run to allow visibility. Unfortunately, the dealer has stated that this is designed that way and there is no fix available. Please let me know if there's anything else I can do to assist you!

I am extremely dissatisfied with my recent car purchase. Despite spending a significant amount of money on a new car, I experienced issues with the transmission and check engine light at just 550 miles. Although the dealership was unable to find any problems initially, the issues persisted and the car became stuck in low gear. Thankfully, Buick has sent a part to hopefully resolve the issue. It is disappointing to have such problems with a new car, especially after having a reliable old car. I hope that this issue will be resolved soon.

This car has not met my expectations in terms of performance and durability. The acceleration is slow and the transmission jerks, causing a rough ride. The spoiler has broken off twice and the interior scratches easily. Additionally, the seats are already showing signs of wear. These issues have been disappointing, and I believe they should be addressed by the manufacturer.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Verano that I bought new on Leap Day. I've put over 17K miles on it already since I commute over 100 miles a day. I must say, this car has exceeded my expectations! I've used every feature of the car and it has not disappointed me. The seats are the best that Buick makes, and the fit and finish inside is as good as any higher brand. All buttons and controls are well placed and easy to use. I'm happy to report that I have had zero issues with the car in over 17K miles. I average 30-34 MPG, which is great! For those who are concerned about the power, I have never had any issues with it. I do a lot of two-lane passing and it has never left me wishing I had more power. Overall, I believe that this car is hands down the best bang for the buck! Thank you for reading.

Your car has been amazing for you! In just over a year, you've put over 15,000 miles on it and it hasn't given you a single problem. With mostly country driving, you've been able to average about 28-30mpg, and on the highway from Pittsburgh to Nashville TN, you even averaged 35mpg! That's fantastic! In comparison to other compact cars, this car has a good amount of power, despite what some may say. The only areas for improvement are the blind spots and the rear seat room, but overall it's a great car, especially for tall people!

Beautiful! It's great to hear that you bought the car at such a low mileage. It sounds like it's perfect for your needs since you don't drive long distances and the mileage is good. I understand your concern about not having a rear camera, it can be difficult to back out without one. Additionally, the front windows (wing style) can create a blind spot, making it hard to see pedestrians on the left side while driving. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

The Buick Verano is amazing! It has European handling, a smooth ride, and looks better than my coworkers' BMW, Plexus, and Mercedes.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2012 Verona. Overall, I've had a pretty good experience with it, but I did run into a few issues along the way. The Hester fan stopped working about 9 months after I bought it, but thankfully it was fixed under warranty. More recently, I noticed that it was using a lot of oil even after each oil change, and I could only get around 2000 miles before it was almost empty. Then, it suddenly went into safety mode with no warning signs. It was definitely frustrating, but after investing in a new engine, battery, spark plugs, and fluids, it's performing really well now! I know that this engine has caused problems in other models, so I hope the new one holds up. All in all, I've spent around $6200, but I now have a car that's paid for and in excellent condition with only 97248 miles on it. Fingers crossed it lasts for a few more years! Do you think they should do a recall for these issues?
