The Buick Verano (Chinese: 威朗) is a compact car manufactured by SAIC-GM for the GM's Buick brand since 2010. It debuted at the North American International Auto Show on January 10, 2011, during a preview of Buick's then upcoming 2012 model. It is the first compact marketed by Buick in the United States since the 1998 Buick Skylark. Verano is Spanish for summer.

The Verano, the Buick Excelle GT, which was developed for the Chinese market, and the Opel Astra/Vauxhall Astra sedan share General Motors' Delta II platform with the Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Orlando, and Opel/Vauxhall Zafira Tourer. In the US, it was manufactured by General Motors from 2012 to 2017.

First generation (2011)

Jim Federico, Executive Director and Vehicle Chief Engineer for Verano, led the vehicle development team and David Lyon, Buick design director, styled the exterior.

The Verano is essentially a North American-market version of the Chinese-market compact Buick Excelle GT. The Verano's unibody construction uses galvanized steel for its front fenders, hood, roof and door panels and thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) bumper covers. It incorporates acoustical laminated glass, triple door seals, a five-layer interior roof liner, sound absorbing mats, recycled denim insulation and specially manufactured 18-inch forged alloy wheels, which minimize road noise. Buick's VentiPorts reappeared at the Verano's introduction, a styling feature unique to Buick dating back to 1949.

The standard powertrain is a 2.4 L Ecotec direct-injected DOHC I4 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The 2.4 L engine is rated 180 horsepower (130 kW; 180 PS) at 6,700 rpm and 171 lb⋅ft (232 N⋅m; 24 kg⋅m) of torque at 4,900 rpm. The engine is flex-fuel capable, meaning it can use either gasoline, or E85 ethanol (2012–13) • 2.4L, or any combination of the two fuels. EPA fuel economy estimates are 21 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km; 25 mpg‑imp) city and 32 mpg‑US (7.4 L/100 km; 38 mpg‑imp) highway for gasoline. A 2012 on-road mixed highway-city review by the website MPGOMATIC showed an average 26.5 mpg‑US (8.9 L/100 km; 31.8 mpg‑imp) on E85, and 29 mpg‑US (8.1 L/100 km; 35 mpg‑imp) for gasoline.

A 2.0 L turbocharged version became available in late 2012, for the 2013 model year, as did a 6-speed manual transmission. The 2.0 L turbo engine is rated at 250 horsepower (186 kW; 253 PS) and 260 lb⋅ft (353 N⋅m; 36 kg⋅m) of torque. GM estimated acceleration from 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) is 6.2 seconds, matching the number posted by the Buick Regal GS.

For 2016, the Verano added a new Sport Touring Edition which included unique 18″ aluminum black pocket wheels and a rear lip spoiler.

The Verano was phased out from the US market after the 2017 model year. The second generation Verano is sold exclusively in China, leaving Buick without an entry-level sedan in the US market.

Which year of Buick Verano to avoid?

If you want to invest in the Buick Verano, avoid the worst years to get the most out of your investment. We recommend avoiding the 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 selections. They had the most complaints and garnered extensive issues on the road.

Is a Buick Verano a reliable car?

According to withclutch.com, the Buick Verano has an average reliability of 73. This number is excellent and is far above the average of 54 for other cars. According to repairpal.com, the Buick Verano has a reliability rating of ⅘. This number puts it above average compared to similar vehicles in the compact category.

Why was the Buick Verano discontinued?

Citing slow sales amidst the migration to tall wagons, General Motors in the United States has ceased production of the premium compact sedan. And although the Verano's market share in Canada was more than double that in the United States, keeping the model alive for Canada alone is not an option.

How many miles will a Buick Verano last?

Typically, a Buick Verano will last 150,000-200,000 miles. This number is lower than the typical average for a Buick but still decent. Unfortunately, some issues plague the vehicle, but they aren't anything most can't handle. Stick with lower mileage Veranos if possible.

  • VIN: 1G4PS5SK6D4

  • Summary: The contact owns a 2013 Buick Verano. The contact stated that while the vehicle was off on an inclined driveway, the vehicle rolled away. The contact had accidentally not shifted out of the drive gear position. The contact was able to jump back in the vehicle where he pressed the brake pedal and shifted into the park position. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was examined, but not diagnosed. The contact was advised that all Buick vehicles perform the same action while in drive on an incline. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-07
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-07
  • VIN: 1G4PP5SKXD4
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Vehicle is consuming oil at an excessive rate (with still less than 70000 miles on the odometer) and I have had to keep a close watch on the levels. It is burning a quart right now about every 1400 miles and the problem is only likely to get worse with time. This could cause the engine to fail or catch fire while operating the vehicle, which is quite dangerous, especially at interstate speeds or on mountain roads. Buick has not issued a recall, and yet there is a service bulletin dating from 2016 (Bulletin No.: 13-06-01-003H). I have also read many complaints from other Verano owners about this problem. An engine is one of the most expensive parts of any vehicle, and if Buick will not voluntarily recall this model year to make the needed repairs, the NTSB ought to take a hand in getting a recall of affected vehicles. I don't want to risk my life on the road if this engine fails while the vehicle is in operation.

  • Summary: My vehicle was rear ended and when the wire connection was detached there was signs of corrosion cause by moisture. The insurance company wont pay for it because the Buick mechanic said this is a common issue with Buick Verano's. When moisture gets into the connectors all instruments on the dashboard goes haywire. it's my belief that this may cause the car to stall and if that happens no power steering or no power breaks.

Buick Verano 2012
  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-01
  • Date Complaint: 2024-04-16
  • VIN: 1G4PP5SK7C4
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The passenger airbag indicator goes on and off with person in passenger seat. We first noticed this Summer 2023. It has gotten worse. Now a passenger can shift weight slightly one way or another and cause the indicator status to change which disables the airbag. Dealer also confirmed (4/16/24) DTC code B0081(internal malfunction with passenger presence module). I have recently learned there was a warranty extension for this failure (which had expired) which I was unaware of. I now have a vehicle which I feel is unsafe to travel with a passenger! If GM is aware of the problem and the dealer (imperial Chevrolet) has charged me $160 diagnostic fee for a known problem and tells me it will cost approx. $1,800 to repair/replace the sensor and module.
Buick Verano 2016
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-04
  • Date Complaint: 2024-04-12
  • VIN: 1G4PW5SK2G4
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: The side detection system got corroded as it was exposed to water. My airbags, turn signals, speedometer, cameras, blind spot warnings, etc. went out. This costed almost $2k to replace and get fixed when this could have been avoided if the side detection parts weren't easily exposed to water. Knowing that this could happen again as this is the way the car was manufactured does not sit well with me. It started failing while on an interstate which caused very unsafe driving conditions for me and the drivers around me. This seems to be a common issue with the Buick Verano that has not been addressed in a recall. The warning lights came on as soon as the failure started occurring.
Buick Verano 2014
  • Date Of Incident: 2018-07-12
  • Date Complaint: 2024-04-05

This power the transmission and can cause serious damage to another person on the road if it goes out while driving you lose all control of car on highway etc. this can kill anyway if they don’t correct this issue

Latest negative Buick Verano car reviews

  1. Owen Maggio 2024-11-01

    Vehicle year: 2015

In 2015, I purchased a brand new car from Faulkner Buick and for the first three years, I had no complaints except for the car's take-off speed. However, starting in May of this year, I have experienced major problems with the car. Although it has high mileage (130,000), I have another car with more miles and have never had any major issues with it. Unfortunately, this Buick has been nothing but trouble. I had to replace the catalytic converter for about $500-600, followed by the camshaft, belt, and timing sensor for about $6-700. After getting these parts replaced, my car stopped moving on me mid-drive with no warning. I had it towed back to Faulkner, where they informed me that the check engine light was for the transmission. While it is frustrating to have a transmission issue, I am confident that it is not a common occurrence. I am currently waiting for a replacement transmission, which is on backorder. Although it is unfortunate that I have to pay for the service without any discounts or courtesy vehicles, I am still satisfied with my decision to purchase this car. I believe that the transmission issue is an isolated incident and I would still recommend this vehicle to others. I have had some expensive issues with my car, including the recent replacement of the blower which cost around $800. Despite the cost, I have invested a lot of money into the car because I am on payments, and it will be paid off next year. I am confident that I can handle any future repairs that may arise. While I have had some issues with my current Buick, I am not deterred from considering an upgrade to an Enclave. I understand that every car model can have its own unique issues, and I am willing to take that risk. I am currently experiencing some issues with the gear shift, but I am taking the necessary steps to have it replaced. I am confident that I can afford this replacement and any future repairs that may be necessary. Overall, I am satisfied with my current car and am looking forward to the future with confidence.

  2. Ashton Koelpin 2024-10-24

    Vehicle year: 2015

This car does not meet my expectations. I believe there are better options available at a similar price point.

  3. Martin Murphy 2024-10-21

    Vehicle year: 2013

This was my mom's car. I noticed prior to her passing that the clear coat was coming off. Unfortunately, at the time, I had too many other things to worry about. I was unaware of when the warranty ran out. After my mother's passing, I contacted Buick and they scheduled for me to go to a Buick dealership to get an estimate. At the dealership, I was told that I was not the only one who had brought their vehicle in with this problem. However, they informed me that it would not be covered and the cost would be $1500-2000. I have never owned a vehicle where the paint did this. Overall, I am pleased with the Buick, but I would not purchase it again due to the way this was handled.

  4. Joaquin McCullough 2024-10-13

    Vehicle year: 2014

We have been driving the Verano for three years now, and my first impressions have proven to be long-lasting. Although it is a heavy vehicle with a so-so engine that drinks gas, especially in winter, the cabin heats up very quickly in the cold. The view out of the back is poor, and it's a two-wheel drive car, which can result in poor performance in winter. Unfortunately, we get five months of snow a year. One January day last year, my wife got stuck, and three separate sets of neighbors had to push the car down our street. However, on the positive side, my daughter and wife both love the Verano because its bulk makes them feel safe.

  5. Jesus McGlynn 2024-10-06

    Vehicle year: 2016

I strongly advise against purchasing this car. It has been nothing but problematic since I bought it, with the battery needing to be replaced more than six times. Despite taking it to the dealership, they have only suggested that the battery is the issue. Unfortunately, even after replacing the battery, the car only runs for a few months before it fails to start again. It is clear that Buick dealers are aware of the issues with these cars, yet they continue to sell them. This is likely why the Verano is being discontinued. I recommend saving your hard-earned money and avoiding this car at all costs.

Your car has been amazing for you! In just over a year, you've put over 15,000 miles on it and it hasn't given you a single problem. With mostly country driving, you've been able to average about 28-30mpg, and on the highway from Pittsburgh to Nashville TN, you even averaged 35mpg! That's fantastic! In comparison to other compact cars, this car has a good amount of power, despite what some may say. The only areas for improvement are the blind spots and the rear seat room, but overall it's a great car, especially for tall people!

One of the best cars I have owned out of about 20 new cars! It's so quiet and has a smooth ride. The triple door gaskets and glass with a laminate sandwiched in the middle make it feel like a high-quality car. I was amazed by the build quality for a car in this price range. My sister and mother each bought one too and they love them. If Buick keeps building cars like this, they will definitely keep their customers happy!

I've had my Verano for about a month now and I'm really impressed! The ruby red color attracts a lot of attention and shows off the car's great lines. The interior finishes are fantastic and make it look like a more expensive car. The seats are very comfortable for four people and the trunk is big. The car is loaded with features and has more than enough acceleration. I'm very happy with my selection!
