Buick Verano problems

The Buick Verano (Chinese: 威朗) is a compact car manufactured by SAIC-GM for the GM's Buick brand since 2010. It debuted at the North American International Auto Show on January 10, 2011, during a preview of Buick's then upcoming 2012 model. It is the first compact marketed by Buick in the United States since the 1998 Buick Skylark. Verano is Spanish for summer.
The Verano, the Buick Excelle GT, which was developed for the Chinese market, and the Opel Astra/Vauxhall Astra sedan share General Motors' Delta II platform with the Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Orlando, and Opel/Vauxhall Zafira Tourer. In the US, it was manufactured by General Motors from 2012 to 2017.
First generation (2011)
Jim Federico, Executive Director and Vehicle Chief Engineer for Verano, led the vehicle development team and David Lyon, Buick design director, styled the exterior.
The Verano is essentially a North American-market version of the Chinese-market compact Buick Excelle GT. The Verano's unibody construction uses galvanized steel for its front fenders, hood, roof and door panels and thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) bumper covers. It incorporates acoustical laminated glass, triple door seals, a five-layer interior roof liner, sound absorbing mats, recycled denim insulation and specially manufactured 18-inch forged alloy wheels, which minimize road noise. Buick's VentiPorts reappeared at the Verano's introduction, a styling feature unique to Buick dating back to 1949.
The standard powertrain is a 2.4 L Ecotec direct-injected DOHC I4 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The 2.4 L engine is rated 180 horsepower (130 kW; 180 PS) at 6,700 rpm and 171 lb⋅ft (232 N⋅m; 24 kg⋅m) of torque at 4,900 rpm. The engine is flex-fuel capable, meaning it can use either gasoline, or E85 ethanol (2012–13) • 2.4L, or any combination of the two fuels. EPA fuel economy estimates are 21 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km; 25 mpg‑imp) city and 32 mpg‑US (7.4 L/100 km; 38 mpg‑imp) highway for gasoline. A 2012 on-road mixed highway-city review by the website MPGOMATIC showed an average 26.5 mpg‑US (8.9 L/100 km; 31.8 mpg‑imp) on E85, and 29 mpg‑US (8.1 L/100 km; 35 mpg‑imp) for gasoline.
A 2.0 L turbocharged version became available in late 2012, for the 2013 model year, as did a 6-speed manual transmission. The 2.0 L turbo engine is rated at 250 horsepower (186 kW; 253 PS) and 260 lb⋅ft (353 N⋅m; 36 kg⋅m) of torque. GM estimated acceleration from 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) is 6.2 seconds, matching the number posted by the Buick Regal GS.
For 2016, the Verano added a new Sport Touring Edition which included unique 18″ aluminum black pocket wheels and a rear lip spoiler.
The Verano was phased out from the US market after the 2017 model year. The second generation Verano is sold exclusively in China, leaving Buick without an entry-level sedan in the US market.

Which year of Buick Verano to avoid?
If you want to invest in the Buick Verano, avoid the worst years to get the most out of your investment. We recommend avoiding the 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 selections. They had the most complaints and garnered extensive issues on the road.
Is a Buick Verano a reliable car?
According to withclutch.com, the Buick Verano has an average reliability of 73. This number is excellent and is far above the average of 54 for other cars. According to repairpal.com, the Buick Verano has a reliability rating of ⅘. This number puts it above average compared to similar vehicles in the compact category.
Why was the Buick Verano discontinued?
Citing slow sales amidst the migration to tall wagons, General Motors in the United States has ceased production of the premium compact sedan. And although the Verano's market share in Canada was more than double that in the United States, keeping the model alive for Canada alone is not an option.
How many miles will a Buick Verano last?
Typically, a Buick Verano will last 150,000-200,000 miles. This number is lower than the typical average for a Buick but still decent. Unfortunately, some issues plague the vehicle, but they aren't anything most can't handle. Stick with lower mileage Veranos if possible.

Buick Verano 2013
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-07
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-07
- VIN: 1G4PP5SKXD4
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Vehicle is consuming oil at an excessive rate (with still less than 70000 miles on the odometer) and I have had to keep a close watch on the levels. It is burning a quart right now about every 1400 miles and the problem is only likely to get worse with time. This could cause the engine to fail or catch fire while operating the vehicle, which is quite dangerous, especially at interstate speeds or on mountain roads. Buick has not issued a recall, and yet there is a service bulletin dating from 2016 (Bulletin No.: 13-06-01-003H). I have also read many complaints from other Verano owners about this problem. An engine is one of the most expensive parts of any vehicle, and if Buick will not voluntarily recall this model year to make the needed repairs, the NTSB ought to take a hand in getting a recall of affected vehicles. I don't want to risk my life on the road if this engine fails while the vehicle is in operation.

- Summary: My vehicle was rear ended and when the wire connection was detached there was signs of corrosion cause by moisture. The insurance company wont pay for it because the Buick mechanic said this is a common issue with Buick Verano's. When moisture gets into the connectors all instruments on the dashboard goes haywire. it's my belief that this may cause the car to stall and if that happens no power steering or no power breaks.

Buick Verano 2012
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-01
- Date Complaint: 2024-04-16
- VIN: 1G4PP5SK7C4
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: The passenger airbag indicator goes on and off with person in passenger seat. We first noticed this Summer 2023. It has gotten worse. Now a passenger can shift weight slightly one way or another and cause the indicator status to change which disables the airbag. Dealer also confirmed (4/16/24) DTC code B0081(internal malfunction with passenger presence module). I have recently learned there was a warranty extension for this failure (which had expired) which I was unaware of. I now have a vehicle which I feel is unsafe to travel with a passenger! If GM is aware of the problem and the dealer (imperial Chevrolet) has charged me $160 diagnostic fee for a known problem and tells me it will cost approx. $1,800 to repair/replace the sensor and module.
Buick Verano 2016
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-04
- Date Complaint: 2024-04-12
- VIN: 1G4PW5SK2G4
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: The side detection system got corroded as it was exposed to water. My airbags, turn signals, speedometer, cameras, blind spot warnings, etc. went out. This costed almost $2k to replace and get fixed when this could have been avoided if the side detection parts weren't easily exposed to water. Knowing that this could happen again as this is the way the car was manufactured does not sit well with me. It started failing while on an interstate which caused very unsafe driving conditions for me and the drivers around me. This seems to be a common issue with the Buick Verano that has not been addressed in a recall. The warning lights came on as soon as the failure started occurring.
Buick Verano 2014
- Date Of Incident: 2018-07-12

This power the transmission and can cause serious damage to another person on the road if it goes out while driving you lose all control of car on highway etc. this can kill anyway if they don’t correct this issue

After driving my 2000 Chevy Silverado for 240,000 miles, I decided it was time for a new car. With so many options available, I was drawn to my daughter's new Chevy Cruze. However, after a few long drives of over 300 miles, I found the seats uncomfortable. After test driving several cars and weighing my options, I ultimately chose the Buick Verano for my daily 32-mile commute to work. It has not disappointed me, as long as I evaluate the car for what it is. The Verano has plenty of room and is easy to drive. While some have commented on the noise, I find it to be one of the nicest features and have received many compliments on how quiet the car is.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my recent experience with my car. I recently traded my '08 Saturn Aura XR for a Verano 1SL and I couldn't be happier. I took her out for a 481 mile road trip and got 33.3 MPG! The ride was so smooth and quiet, it was like driving on a cloud. The 2.4L DOHC engine has proven to be more than capable both in the city and on the highway. The Verano is beautifully designed both inside and out, with flowing lines and curves on the body and a comfortable and thoughtful interior. I originally wanted a LaCrosse and thought the Verano would be a step down, but I was wrong. Buick really did this one right!

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your 2013 Verano! It sounds like you got a great deal on it with only 13,000 miles. The car seems to have all the features you could want, from navigation to Sirius radio to brake assist. It's a shame that they discontinued this beautiful entry-level luxury car, but I'm happy to hear that you're still loving it. Thanks for sharing your experience!

With just under 60,000 miles, we recently replaced the original Continental ContiPro tires and had our first alignment. We were pleased to find that each tire wore evenly and the ride is back to what it was when it was new. Good tires make one heck of a difference! The mileage remains consistent with 33MPG highway and 30+ combo city and driveway. As it's a direct injection engine, it's time for an intake valve cleaning, and we'll schedule this next. The interior, paint, and trim are holding up well. We replaced the OEM battery with an AGM battery and it held up well too. We have no complaints about this reliable transportation. It's easy to maintain, looks good, and the mileage remains good. It's amazing the value and deal this car is for what it was sold for. People missed a great buy, and GM killed off (in the US anyway) a reliable car. Now at 50,000 miles, this car has not been in for a single warranty claim. We have owned Chrysler, Jeep, Chevy, Honda, and Acura, and every vehicle had at least one warranty service visit, except for our Verano. We are very impressed. The mileage remains good, and we just had the transmission fluid serviced, and the car shifts like it's brand new. We are still comfy and enjoying the car. This is a sleeper car that really shines. With only 6,500 on the odometer now, I have to comment on how impressed I am with this car. We would have never bought a Buick, but after riding in one, before you buy something else, you need to take this for a ride. It's easy to get in and out of, has comfortable seats, a large trunk, lifetime 30MPG per the OnStar app, no issues at all, a well-laid-out interior, nice fit and finish, and the engine and transmission work well together. We have the Leather group, and the keyless ignition is awesome. This car is loaded with safety features, and when you compare it to other models and the price, you can't go wrong. It has lane assist, a forward-facing camera, all the airbags, blind spot monitoring, and a self-dimming rear mirror - all for an affordable price. I drive an Acura, a Jeep, Honda Civic, and another GM product, and this car is THE quietest of all of them.Reliability is yet to be determined, but we have not had any warranty claims so far. Our first oil change is coming up in about two weeks, courtesy of Buick. I read a comment that there is not enough back seat room, but as someone who is 6'4'', I can say that I don't need to push the front seat all the way back to be comfortable, and there is still enough space for someone to sit behind me while I'm driving. While this may not be a large 4-door sedan, the interior room is impressive for its size. I highly recommend giving this model a chance. We were pleasantly surprised ourselves, especially with the upgraded White Pearl exterior and two-tone brown interior.

I recently switched from a 2014 GMC SUV to a Buick Verano, and I have to say, I'm really impressed with this car! When my dealership first suggested a Buick, I wasn't interested at all, but they took me out to see the Verano and I was blown away by how sleek and luxurious it looked - without the luxury price tag. The interior is just as impressive, with a classy design and layout that's both comfortable and inviting. I've been driving it for a month now, and I can confidently say that it's a joy to drive. The ride is smooth and quiet, and the entertainment features are top-notch. Even though it's considered a compact car, it feels like a full-size sedan to me - and everyone who's been inside agrees! I'm getting great gas mileage too, with 27 miles to the gallon in the city. Overall, I'm really happy with my decision to switch to the Verano. It's a great car that looks and feels like a luxury vehicle, without the high price tag.

I've been driving my Turbo Verano for about two months now. It's my first Buick, and I must say it's just perfect for me at this point in my life - the right price and size. The ride is smooth and quiet, although there is some road/tire noise. When I first test drove a model with the base engine, I found it rather anemic. However, the turbo is more than adequate for my driving needs; I actually have to restrain myself a bit when stepping on the gas pedal. The body design is fine, if a bit demure, and the interior is very comfortable and well-appointed. Overall, I think it's a very nice car.

While driving my 2015 Verano on the highway at 75 MPH, my car suddenly shut off, even though I had 3/4 of a tank of gas. The experience was quite frightening, especially with an 18-wheeler behind me honking its horn. Thankfully, I was going downhill. I immediately took my car back to the dealer, where they conducted a free analysis. However, no codes came back, and they assured me that nothing was wrong with my car. Despite their reassurances, I still felt uncomfortable driving my car. The dealer offered to trade my car in, but with a $7000 depreciation, even though I had only purchased it 7 months ago. As a confident driver, I value my safety above all else, and I left the dealership feeling disappointed that they prioritized money over my well-being.

I brought the car in May 2015 and initially liked it. It was a cool looking car. However, after experiencing multiple issues, such as the AC being completely replaced and noise from the left front, I decided to trade it in December 2015. Despite this experience, we still love our older model Buick. While I was disappointed with this car, it won't necessarily deter me from considering a Buick in the future.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with taking my car to the dealer for a recall problem. Unfortunately, the steering wheel was not centered and the car kept drifting to the left. Even after a test drive, the auto rep said that the problem was not their concern. I was hoping to get this issue resolved, but it seems like I'll have to explore other options. Thanks for listening!
