2023 Tesla Model 3 problems

The Tesla Model 3 is a battery electric mid-size sedan with a fastback body style built by Tesla, Inc., introduced in 2017. The vehicle is marketed as being more affordable to more people than previous models made by Tesla. The Model 3 was the world's top selling plug-in electric car for three years, from 2018 to 2020, before the Tesla Model Y, a crossover SUV based on the Model 3 chassis, took the top spot. In June 2021, the Model 3 became the first electric car to pass global sales of 1 million.
An upgraded Model 3 with revamped interior and exterior styling was introduced in late 2023 for countries supplied by the Shanghai factory, and in early 2024 in North America and other countries supplied by the Fremont factory.
History
In an interview for Wired Science recorded during 2006, Elon Musk presented the Model 3 as likely being affordable by most people able to purchase new cars, aiming for a $30,000 price point. In 2008 the car was stated to be a family car. In 2017 Tesla added that the Standard Range version of the all-electric car would have an estimated EPA-rated range of 215 miles (346 km), a five-passenger seating capacity, front and rear trunks, and promised sports-car levels of acceleration performance. Tesla said it would have a 5-Star safety rating and have a drag coefficient of Cd=0.225. This is lower than the Tesla Model S drag coefficient of Cd=0.24, which, in 2014, was the lowest among the production cars of the time.
Within a week of unveiling the Model 3 in 2016, Tesla revealed they had taken 325,000 reservations for the car. These reservations represented potential sales of over US$14 billion. By August 2017, there were 455,000 net reservations.
Industry experts were dubious when, in May 2016, Tesla announced its decision to advance its 500,000-total-unit build plan (combined for Model S, Model X, and Model 3) to 2018, two years earlier than previously planned, in order to accelerate its target for Model 3 output. As predicted, there were "production bottlenecks" and "production hell". In May 2016, Tesla issued US$2 billion in new shares to the stock market to finance the plan.
The company plans for the Model 3 are part of Tesla's three-step strategy to start with a high-price vehicle and move progressively towards lower-cost vehicles, while the battery and electric drivetrain were improved and paid for through the sales of the Roadster, Model S, and Model X vehicles.
On April 18, 2018, Tesla updated its production target to 6,000 vehicles per week by the end of June 2018, an increase from its previous target of 5,000 vehicles per week which was previously promised at earlier dates. On July 1, 2018, Elon Musk announced that Tesla had met its production goal of 5,000 cars in a week.
On February 28, 2019, Tesla announced the availability of the highly anticipated Standard Range trim priced at $35,000 (equivalent to $41,710 in 2023). However, on April 12, 2019, Tesla announced that the Standard Range model would no longer be available for ordering online, but only over the phone or in stores. Autopilot, previously a $3,000 option, was included in all versions of the Model 3 except for the Standard Range, while each version's price only increased by $2,000. In February 2019, the Model 3 passed the Chevrolet Volt to become the all-time bestselling plug-in electric car in the U.S. Model 3 sales surpassed the Nissan Leaf in early 2020 to become the world's all-time top selling plug-in electric car.

- Summary: Greetings, my name is --- My vehicle's VIN number is --- At the end of April 2024 I purchased a car from the seller, the seller claimed that my title was clean, he showed me pictures and it was indeed so When I came to Denver with this car, I put the car on the local registry and got a new title and it was clean too My wife was recently in an accident and the Tesla authorized service center didn't want to take the car in for service because the car has a salvage status in the title I started checking the car through several services that provide vehicle history, and found the following reports about it Source: [XXX] Date - [XXX] Type - Junk and Salvage Location - WESTCHESTER, IL Source: [XXX] Date - [XXX] Type - Total Loss Vehicle As we can see, this vehicle has 2 records of being Junk and Salvage and also a Total Loss vehicle But I was shown by the seller that the title is clean, also I was given a new title by the Arapahoe Motor Vehicle Services Office which is also clean. The official Tesla repair shops also refused to take my car for repair because they said that they do not support this title and that my car is salvaged. I would like to get the results of my car inspection from you if possible. I have also contacted the DMV of Texas and Colorado about this situation! ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-06
- VIN: 5YJ3E1EA3PF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
- Summary: Component or System Failed: The critical safety issue involves Tesla's door locking system, specifically the lack of a readily accessible and obvious manual door release in the rear seat. This design flaw could prevent any child or passenger from knowing how to open the door or escape in an emergency. Safety Risk: The absence of a clearly identifiable manual release mechanism for the rear doors creates a severe safety risk. In an emergency, such as a power failure or accident, a child or any rear-seat passenger may be trapped without an obvious way to exit, increasing the potential for injury or death. This is particularly concerning given two prior instances where the battery failed to charge, leaving the vehicle completely without power even while connected to a charger. Reproduction and Confirmation: Tesla refuses to address the issue, This is a critical fire hazard. Inspections Conducted: The vehicle has been inspected by Tesla service centers on at least two occasions to address charging and battery problems. However, the lack of an accessible rear door manual release remains unresolved and unaddressed. Warning Signs or Symptoms: There were no warning lamps or messages specifically related to the rear door safety issue. The charging and battery failure were preceded by warning messages indicating charging errors or reduced battery performance, which first appeared during the initial charging failure and notifications on the Tesla app. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request to verify the safety concerns and confirm the emergency safety issues with the rear door locks, charging, and battery systems.
SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-06
- VIN: 5YJ3E1EC8PF
- Components: SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Purchased 2023 Tesla Model 3 Performance in January 2024. On [XXX] at approximately 2 pm, I got a flat tire drivers side front on a remote highway outside of Reno Nv. At that time, I found out that I didn't have a spare tire or jack supplied by Tesla. I called Tesla Roadside Service and was told before they would send out assistance, I had to agree to purchase a new tire at 540.00 per tire, the towing company couldn't be to my location till after 6pm. I declined Tesla service. The Tesla had less than 18000 miles on it. My son came and assisted me in removing the flat and we took it to Les Schwab Tire center where I purchased a new tire for 375.00 dollars. Les Schwab stated that the wear on the tire was caused by alignment. I contacted Tesla made a service appointment for alignment for August 26, 2024. I got another flat on the drivers rear on [XXX], which cost 283.00 from Les Schwab with the same disposition as caused by alignment. I took the car in the next morning and had the remaining two tires changed as it was no longer safe to drive 766.00 cost, and alignment was to blame mileage was documented by Les Schwab at 18792. When I went for the service at Tesla, I was told they do not warranty tire or alignment and when I told them that I would let small claims decide if that the tire wear was excessive and caused by improper alignment, they threw me out of the dealership and have refused to work on my car. The main reason for filing the complaint is none of this was disclosed when I purchased the car, every car I have ever bought has come with a spare tire, jack, and tools needed to change it. There are no other tire repair shops that can do Tesla alignments, Tesla offers no warranty on their tires and Les Schwab stated even their lowest cost tires come with a 20k mile warranty. Tesla is price gouging for tires 540.00 each and alignment 275.00. Any of the Tesla forums state that this is happening thru all models and tire sizes to most owners. FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-28
- VIN: 5YJ3E1EB3PF
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: When traveling on an interstate highway with a speed limit of 65 mph, with navigation system operating and with TACC engaged, the system sometimes resets the maximum speed to that of the speed limit of the exit ramp (usually 40 mph) when I am NOT exiting the highway. This results in rapid deceleration significantly below the prevailing highway speed with the potential of causing a rear end collision from following traffic. This is consistent some certain exit ramps along I-93 in NH, and is prevalent when traveling in the right traffic lane.

- Summary: On [XXX] around [XXX], my daughter drove her Tesla Model 3 on [XXX] from school. Two strange/scary accidents happened to two different Tesla cars (Model 3 and Y). It was raining with low/medium visibility. One of the cars was driven by my daughter, and luckily, both drivers were safe with very minor injuries. The cars had significant damage but were drivable, and there were no airbags out. These two accidents occurred within 3 to 5 minutes at the “SAME LOCATION.” When I asked them what happened, my daughter and other Model Y drivers described a sudden loss of control, with their cars spinning and becoming unresponsive to steering and braking. They then hit the guardrail on the center line. I checked the video recordings of our car multiple times; no vehicle-to-vehicle collision was involved. I also checked the road to see if there was any oil spillage, but the lane was clean. She didn't use Auto Pilot, FSD, and Cruse Control. The office recorded it as Hydro Plane in his report, but my concern was incidents that happened only to Teslas. Also, when I posted this incident on a Tesla WhatsApp group, multiple Tesla owners reported that they had a similar issue when it was raining. It seems like Sensors malfunctioning in the rain. Also, my daughter was driving below the posted speed (68/70), and she gave a written note to the officer too, but the officer recorded it as 70/70. I need to check that in the Wake County traffic court. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-18
- VIN: 5YJ3E1EA9PF
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: I am writing to file a claim concerning a recall affecting my Tesla vehicle, identified by NHTSA Recall Number 24V376. The recall involves a defect in the seat belt reminder system software logic affecting certain Tesla models, including my own. The defect causes a failure to provide audible and visual seat belt reminders when the driver’s seat belt is not fastened after the ignition is turned to the “on” or “start” position. This issue does not comply with FMVSS No. 208, S7.3(a)(1). Safety Concerns: While this defect has not led to any injuries, it has caused considerable anxiety regarding the safety and compliance of my vehicle. The absence of seat belt reminders can increase the risk of driving without a fastened seat belt, potentially leading to serious injury in the event of a collision. Remedy and Actions Taken: I understand that Tesla is providing an over-the-air (OTA) software remedy, firmware 2024.20.3, to address this issue. The remedy involves updating the seat belt reminder logic to rely solely on the seat belt buckle and ignition status, independent of the driver seat occupancy switch. Impact and Request: The ongoing concern about the functionality of the seat belt reminder system has affected my confidence in the safety of my vehicle.
SEAT BELTS,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-11

- Summary: I am writing to file a claim regarding a safety issue with my Tesla vehicle, which is subject to the recall identified as NHTSA Recall Number 24V554. The recall involves a potential defect in the hood latch assembly, which may not detect an open condition. As a result, this defect can cause the front hood to unintentionally open while driving, potentially obstructing the driver’s view and increasing the risk of a collision. Safety Concerns: Although no crashes or injuries have been reported related to this issue, I experienced significant safety concerns while driving my vehicle. The possibility of the hood unexpectedly opening and obstructing my view caused considerable anxiety and distraction while operating the vehicle. Remedy and Actions Taken: Tesla has issued an over-the-air software update (firmware release 2024.20.3) to address this issue. However, despite the update, I remain concerned about the reliability of the latch system and the potential risk it poses to my safety and the safety of others on the road.

I previously owned a 2016 Audi A6 which I absolutely loved. However, I must say that the Tesla is the best car I have ever owned. Don't get me wrong, the Audi is a magnificent vehicle, but driving the Tesla is so much fun! After experiencing an EV, it's hard to imagine going back to a gas-propelled vehicle. The instant power, regenerative braking, and crisp handling exceeded my expectations. The seats are extremely comfortable, and the interior provides plenty of room for a small vehicle. The technology is very user-friendly, and I love how one screen controls everything. The plain-looking interior feels comfortable, clean, and I appreciate the minimalist styling. Although it is minimalistic, it feels luxurious. Driving is a blast, even in the standard model, the acceleration is instantaneous and quick. The handling is crisp, and you feel connected to the road. The instrumentation is easy to read, and the technology is intuitive, which is impressive. I will admit I was not excited about the table that controls everything, but I now find it very ingenious. As I continue my ownership, I will update my review if necessary. UPDATE REVIEW: I am 5K into my ownership of my Tesla Model 3 Standard. As a realtor, I spend a lot of time behind the wheel. I will start with the pros. This car is a blast to drive. I love the combination of comfort, sportiness, and luxury. I wasn't sure if I would like the simplicity of the interior, but I love it. I personally like one screen operating everything. There is a learning curve, but it is pretty quick. My last car was an Audi A6, and I enjoy driving this car more than my Audi, and I loved my Audi. Handling is very crisp, and you feel in total control behind the wheel. The ride isn't as soft as many luxury cars, but the combination of speed, handling, and comfort is perfect in my opinion. Acceleration is instantaneous no matter what speed you're going. Not having a transmission makes for seamless acceleration. The technology is fantastic. The controls are very user-friendly once you get used to them. The sound system is exceptional, even in the base model. I did add a subwoofer in the trunk since the base model does not come with one, but now movies sound like a movie theater. The cruise control is the best I have ever experienced, and the ability to respond to voice commands is very impressive. You don’t even have to “train” it to recognize your voice. The navigation system is also the best I have ever experienced, and the range is more than adequate for my driving habits. However, there are a few cons. When I approach my vehicle, I often have to turn around so the car can read my card in my wallet for it to unlock. For some reason, my phone won’t always open the doors for me, which is a bit annoying but no big deal. Every blue moon when using cruise control, it disengages, which is also a bit annoying. Many have complained about the fit and finish, and I have noticed a few flaws. Overall, this is the best vehicle I have ever owned. I love it. Like most cars, it isn’t perfect, but it is exceptional.

I have been driving the Model 3 for the past three years and I must say, it has been a great experience. The vehicle is fun, responsive and the dual motor, extended range makes highway driving a breeze. Although I have not used the self park, summon and self drive features much, they are available for those who need them. Charging has been convenient for me since I have a 220V connection at home and an overnight charge gives me a week's worth of city commuting. I have also used the Supercharger a few times and it has been efficient. The only downside is the TESLA service which can be frustrating. It is difficult to get in touch with customer service and when you do, they insist on doing everything via the Tesla app, which in my opinion is not very user-friendly. It would be great if they could provide a representative one can talk to. If your car has a malfunction or repair issue, you cannot take it to the nearest service center without an appointment (again via the App). In summary, the Model 3 is a good car and I would recommend it. However, Tesla needs to improve its customer service if it wants to compete in the EV marketplace. With more competition now, it is important for Tesla to provide excellent customer relations to stay ahead of the game.

Hey there! Would you like to talk about the cost? I know it's a luxury car and the price might be high, but let me tell you, the design of Tesla's motor is extremely efficient and reliable. In fact, no other EV company has been able to achieve what they have by December 2023. Plus, they manufacture their own batteries, so if anything goes wrong, the manufacturer can go straight to their factory to fix it, rather than having to contact a bunch of battery companies in China or Korea. They've even innovated their battery to be more dense and safe. Pretty impressive, right?

After owning a Leaf for 8 years, I was excited to upgrade to an electric car that I could drive for long trips. My Model 3 is not only practical, but also fun to drive - even for a grandmother like me! My 17-month-old grandson loves the sunroof over his car seat, which keeps him entertained and happy even when we're stuck in traffic. With enough space to fit his car seat and both of his parents in the back seat, it's the perfect car for family outings. I'm thrilled to say goodbye to gas stations and oil changes for good!

Hi there! I wanted to share my recent experience with my Model 3 (15 April 2023). I noticed a crack on my windshield (starting vertically from the center bottom all the way to the center and running horizontally) after a few days of driving to the grocery store and Kumon. I raised a service request from the Tesla mobile app and a technician came to inspect the issue. Unfortunately, Tesla has denied covering the windshield replacement under warranty, citing that the crack was due to some kind of impact. However, I'm not entirely convinced for a few reasons. Firstly, the point of impact was on the black portion of the windshield sitting behind the wipers. Secondly, there was barely a chip visible on the impact area (I couldn't even feel it by running my finger over it). Lastly, I noticed some uneven dashboard fittings (seen from inside the cabin) which could be creating tension on the windshield and causing the crack. I'm hoping we can find a solution that works for both of us, as I'm worried that even if I get it replaced, the new windshield may crack again due to a manufacturing defect. Thank you for your understanding!

When I first received this car back in February 2022, I absolutely fell in love with it. It was like a little rocket ship and so much fun to drive. I ordered my favorite color combination, blue with white interior, and couldn't find enough excuses to take it out for a spin. Although I had a minor issue with the fit and finish, I thought it was something I could live with. I was thrilled that I no longer had to pay for expensive premium fuel and ridiculous German car service bills! However, as time went on, I started to notice some discomfort in my lower back and neck after long drives, which was something I never experienced with my previous car, an Audi A4. Additionally, the suspension was merely okay, bordering on rough sometimes. While wind and road noise were decent at lower speeds, they could become slightly worse than average at highway speeds. I also started to notice the poor fit and finish more, especially on the interior, as small creaks and rattles settled in and the windshield never completely defogged correctly. The car's range has decreased slowly but noticeably over time. At this point, I like the car enough to keep it, mostly because I fear I would not get a good trade-in due to oversupply in my area. I still love the performance, and the tech is great (I never had a problem with auto steer, but I don't abuse it). The sound system is pretty decent (though not as good as my old Audi's Bang and Olfusen set-up). However, my back should not feel punished when driving more than 100 miles, and I don't have confidence that the scratchy plastics and seats will hold up well over the long haul. The paint job is subpar, and the car just doesn't feel premium. I find myself missing my Audi, something I would have never guessed would ever happen when I first got that beautiful, shiny rocket ship. If I had to do it all over again, would I buy it again? Probably not, honestly. I would opt for a plug-in hybrid from a brand that holds its value, feels premium, and doesn't give me a back-up.

I like the tech. However, I found the rattles and road noise to be quite annoying for a $50K luxury car. Unfortunately, the rattles became worse after taking these issues to Tesla service.

The car ride can be a bit stiff and the interior tends to make a lot of noise. Additionally, the blinkers on this model can be a bit wonky and may shut off prematurely. The cruise control can also be a bit difficult to use, as it tends to self-brake constantly. However, we understand that the biggest concern is with the service. While we strive to complete jobs in a timely manner, sometimes unexpected delays can occur. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. We also understand that registration and title can be a frustrating process, and we are working to improve our procedures to better serve our customers. Thank you for your feedback and for choosing Tesla.

I absolutely adore this car! It's incredibly fast, responsive, and provides a stable ride. However, there are a few issues that need to be addressed. The range of speed in a charge is a bit too quick, which the Tesla team explained could be due to various factors such as speed and road conditions. Additionally, the car is a bit pricey. On the bright side, the screen on the Tesla displays your speed accurately and is very reliable. During a road trip, the car even indicates that you could go up to 200 miles. Overall, this car is fantastic and definitely worth considering!
