2016 Buick Verano problems
The Buick Verano (Chinese: 威朗) is a compact car manufactured by SAIC-GM for the GM's Buick brand since 2010. It debuted at the North American International Auto Show on January 10, 2011, during a preview of Buick's then upcoming 2012 model. It is the first compact marketed by Buick in the United States since the 1998 Buick Skylark. Verano is Spanish for summer.
The Verano, the Buick Excelle GT, which was developed for the Chinese market, and the Opel Astra/Vauxhall Astra sedan share General Motors' Delta II platform with the Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Orlando, and Opel/Vauxhall Zafira Tourer. In the US, it was manufactured by General Motors from 2012 to 2017.
First generation (2011)
Jim Federico, Executive Director and Vehicle Chief Engineer for Verano, led the vehicle development team and David Lyon, Buick design director, styled the exterior.
The Verano is essentially a North American-market version of the Chinese-market compact Buick Excelle GT. The Verano's unibody construction uses galvanized steel for its front fenders, hood, roof and door panels and thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) bumper covers. It incorporates acoustical laminated glass, triple door seals, a five-layer interior roof liner, sound absorbing mats, recycled denim insulation and specially manufactured 18-inch forged alloy wheels, which minimize road noise. Buick's VentiPorts reappeared at the Verano's introduction, a styling feature unique to Buick dating back to 1949.
The standard powertrain is a 2.4 L Ecotec direct-injected DOHC I4 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The 2.4 L engine is rated 180 horsepower (130 kW; 180 PS) at 6,700 rpm and 171 lb⋅ft (232 N⋅m; 24 kg⋅m) of torque at 4,900 rpm. The engine is flex-fuel capable, meaning it can use either gasoline, or E85 ethanol (2012–13) • 2.4L, or any combination of the two fuels. EPA fuel economy estimates are 21 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km; 25 mpg‑imp) city and 32 mpg‑US (7.4 L/100 km; 38 mpg‑imp) highway for gasoline. A 2012 on-road mixed highway-city review by the website MPGOMATIC showed an average 26.5 mpg‑US (8.9 L/100 km; 31.8 mpg‑imp) on E85, and 29 mpg‑US (8.1 L/100 km; 35 mpg‑imp) for gasoline.
A 2.0 L turbocharged version became available in late 2012, for the 2013 model year, as did a 6-speed manual transmission. The 2.0 L turbo engine is rated at 250 horsepower (186 kW; 253 PS) and 260 lb⋅ft (353 N⋅m; 36 kg⋅m) of torque. GM estimated acceleration from 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) is 6.2 seconds, matching the number posted by the Buick Regal GS.
For 2016, the Verano added a new Sport Touring Edition which included unique 18″ aluminum black pocket wheels and a rear lip spoiler.
The Verano was phased out from the US market after the 2017 model year. The second generation Verano is sold exclusively in China, leaving Buick without an entry-level sedan in the US market.

- VIN: 1G4PW5SKXG4
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: The contact owns a 2016 Buick Verano. The contact stated while starting the vehicle and driving at an undisclosed speed, the front passenger's side seat sensor failed to detect a passenger in the seat. The “Air Bag Off” and “Service Air Bag” messages were displayed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The contact related the failure to Special Coverage Adjustment: 23520 Passenger Presence Sensor (PPS) Module; however, the VIN was not included in the Special Coverage Adjustment. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 134,700.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-22
- VIN: 1G4PW5SK0G4
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: When I start my car air bag lights on when a passenger is not seat air bags keeps light is on and when I have passenger next to me air bag is off. I took this car to dealership I bought they want me to pay $1720 to fix the system I only driven 42000 miles since I bought I had fully guaranteed paid for 5 years by installation to the company. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-04
- VIN: 1G4PW5SK2G4
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: The side detection system got corroded as it was exposed to water. My airbags, turn signals, speedometer, cameras, blind spot warnings, etc. went out. This costed almost $2k to replace and get fixed when this could have been avoided if the side detection parts weren't easily exposed to water. Knowing that this could happen again as this is the way the car was manufactured does not sit well with me. It started failing while on an interstate which caused very unsafe driving conditions for me and the drivers around me. This seems to be a common issue with the Buick Verano that has not been addressed in a recall. The warning lights came on as soon as the failure started occurring.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-22
- VIN: 1G4PW5SK3G4
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: There are 18 complaints about the passenger airbag sensor that should have been reported as a recall. Buick issued a Special Coverage Adjustment notice for the passenger Presence sensor Reference Number: [XXX] Letter was sent to all customers; I did not ever receive it as i purchased this vehicle as used from the BUICK dealership in EL PASO TX. I recently started experiencing error messages with my airbags. Upon taking it to the dealer, the airbag sensor issue is related to the notice listed above. Because I never received the notice, I wasn't on alert for issues. I don't see why i should have to pay for this repair since its obvious this is a dealer installed defective product. Please help resolve this issue as it going to cause someone's life and by then it will be too late. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-21
- VIN: 1G4PW5SK9G4
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: - The side detection module became corroded, blew a fuse and stopped functioning. This was reported in a service bulletin and extended warranty protection for some GM vehicles, but not the Buick Verano. [XXX] - This happened while driving. The vehicle would still drive, but lost all gauge functions (No speedometer, tachometer, fuel, or temp gauges). -The side obstacle detection system does not work. -The system also interferes with the passenger side airbag and leaves it turned OFF with a passenger in the seat. These obviously all create a serious safety risk and have not been covered by a recall for this vehicle. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
STEERING,SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-17
- VIN: 1G4PP5SKXG4
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Power Steering, Brakes, Turn Signals, Monitor Screen. The Cars steering will lock up and pull to the right hand side and the brakes get mushy. This could be deadly to myself and other motor vehicles. It happens suddenly with out warning and if there is a vehicle in the right hand lane, you will crash into it. I am waiting to take it to the dealer but prior to the steering and electrical, I told them on 10/12/21 oil service about the brakes feeling mushy and they said that’s the way they’re supposed to be. Only other passengers have witnessed the electrical and steering problem happen. At the exact same time the steering goes out the stability trek light flashes on the panel, the media screen goes out and my turn signal (if on) has no audio. I bought the car 3/26/21 @ 44,690 miles. On 10/12/21 I mentioned the brakes and about 2 months after that this electrical/steering problem started happening. It started out as little quirks but has progressively gotten worse. There is not 1 specific thing that seems to trigger the effect, it is variable.
AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-10
- VIN: 1G4PP5SK7G4
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS
- Summary: Buick issued a Special Coverage Adjustment notice for the passenger prescence sensor Reference Number: N15202352 Letter was sent to all customers, I did not ever receive it. I recently started experiencing error messages with my airbags. Upon taking it to the dealer, the airbag sensor issue is related to the notice listed above. Because I never received the notice, I wasn't on alert for issues. I had to pay the full amount for the fix. My bigger concern is that with the airbag service error going off - if I had been in an accident, the airbag might not have deployed. This known issue should have been a recall and fixed in this car.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-22
- VIN: 1G4PW5SK0G4
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Fuel Sending Unit. Yes. Loss of power and control of vehicle due to no fuel. Mechanics have confirmed it as a common problem with GM fuel sending unit/pump No. No warnings, no lights, no indication of problem. I received a second pump and sending unit from GM and had the same problem for a 2nd time of fuel reading inaccurately and causing me to lose vehicle functionality.
SEATS,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-10
- VIN: 1G4PP5SK5G4
- Components: SEATS,ENGINE
- Summary: The contact owns a 2016 Buick Verano. The contact stated that the front driver’s side seat was no longer adjustable. The contact was unable to adjust the height in order to see over the steering wheel. Additionally, while operating the vehicle the check engine warning light remained illuminated; the vehicle failed to properly accelerate. The cause of the failure was not determined. The local dealer was notified but no assistance was provided. The manufacturer was not contacted and notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 77,000.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-11-30
- VIN: 1G4PW5SK0G4
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Fuel level sensor failure. I haven't checked but I don't think a regular dealer would inspect for free because it's inside of the gas tank. The gas gauge gets stuck at around a quarter of a tank leading a sensible person to assume their is gas in the vehicle. This is a safety risk because your vehicle can stall in the middle of the road as it did in my case. You lose the ability to steer the vehicle and put other vehicles behind you or around you at risk. The problem has been reproduced by me when comparing the range for my vehicle (396 miles on a full tank) then resetting the trip after filling up. I then drove the vehicle across a couple weeks and the trip said I was at 335 miles and the range said 96 miles, which is an overestimate from the predicted range when filling up. I drove another 30 miles for work in the same day and the gas guage seemed to be in the exact same spot as it was earlier (and when I was stalled the time before) and my predicted range actually went up to 102 (pictures to prove all of this upon request.) And at 365 miles, it would be impossible fir my car to reach another 100 plus miles in range. My gas tank holds 15.6 miles and my average fuel economy was 25.5. When I filled the gas tank up after this trip, it put 14.7 gallons in which means I had .9 of a gallon. 25.5 × .9 is roughly 23 miles. Completely way off from the "predicted 100" it said before I filled up. Personal dealers have been completely unaware and I'm afraid to take it to a dealer in the event they try to charge me for it. No. No, there is no warning light and no check engine light. Gauge and light check works properly when vehicle is started and it runs the quick diagnostic by maxing out the gauges and turning on all of the dash lights.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-22
- VIN: 1G4PR5SK8G4
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: My car shut off while driving in a busy area. I was going 35 mph where the car just shut off while driving. I received a jump, but that only lasted long enough for me to get 2 lanes over for the car to cut off again. Myself and other drivers were at risk because someone could have ran into me and I had no power and unable to remove key from ignition or even turn the key. Police arrived but said that they are no longer allowed to touch our vehicles. For almost a year my car has been cutting off while parked, and have received news that my battery had a dead cell, which was causing it to shut off. I have taken it to a mechanic who says my alternator is the issue. No warning signs or messages appear before shutting off.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-09-30
- VIN: 1G4PP5SK6G4
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: While driving home from work, my car, lost power a few times. Though, the maintenance malfunction light did come on, it was while the issue was occurring. I mention this because, in the car’s manual, it states that the light will come on BEFORE the malfunction takes place. I finally made it home, however, the car did continue to lose power while driving. The next morning I took the car to my mechanic, who experienced the same issues, then did a diagnostic test and found these results: P0011; CAM Position; RCTISATOR BNK 1; TIMING OVER ADVANCE. Today while reading over all of the complaints, it is evident that this is a SERIOUS ISSUE! This malfunction is extremely dangerous and can prove to be fatal, due to losing driving power/car cutting off while driving. I am surprised that this potentially fatal malfunction is not considered to be a recall. PLEASE DO WHAT IS RIGHT AND SET A RECALL I also saw someone’s post that stated, there was a Recall and Free replacement on cars with the letters PP within the VIN#, we’re NOT BE SOLD or Leased in the US due to a Federation Violation and Restricted code. Somehow, I was sold one of these UNSAFE and BANNED vehicles. How do those who fall into that same category rectify this problem? Thank You for your help.

I visited the dealership with the intention of purchasing an Impala, but I couldn't justify the need for such a large car. The salesperson showed me a Buick, and I immediately fell in love with it! Initially, I was concerned about fitting into the car as I am 6'4, but to my surprise, the car was spacious and comfortable. During the test drive, I was impressed with the car's fuel efficiency, averaging 40mpg. I was so impressed that I decided to purchase the car on the spot! I have now owned the car for three months and have driven 12,300 miles. The car is incredibly fuel-efficient, and I only used 8.5 gallons on a 360-mile round trip, achieving 42mpg. The car is also very comfortable and quiet, making it perfect for long drives. The interior is holding up well, although I have noticed that the black materials tend to turn white when touched. The car's radio can freeze when an older iPhone is plugged in, but it restarts after about 10 minutes. The back seat is a bit tight, and it's challenging to fit two soft drinks in the cup holder at once. However, the lighted glovebox is a nice touch, and the car is surprisingly quick. Overall, I am thrilled with my purchase and would highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a fuel-efficient and comfortable vehicle. It sounds like you're really enjoying your car! It's great to hear that it's comfortable, economical, powerful, and beautiful, especially in the dark gray color you have. It seems like you got a great deal on the price too, which is always a plus. However, it's important to be careful with the speedometer to avoid any trouble. Overall, it sounds like you made a great choice with this car!

I have been searching for a new car for 6 months. After test driving several models including a 2016 Chevy Malibu, 2013 Lexus 350, 2015 Nissan Altima, 2015 Acura ILX, 2012 Cadillac SRX, and a 2015 Kia Optima, I found that my Certified Buick Verano was the most comfortable, well-appointed, and sleek looking car for the price. I am extremely satisfied with my Certified Buick Verano!
-
This car may look small, but it has a lot going for it. The 4-cylinder engine is perfect for Florida, since it's flat and easy on the gas. Navigation is also easy to use, and it comes with Lane Departure and Lane Assist. Overall, it's a great choice!
-
It's a pretty decent car!
-
It's a great price!

I strongly advise against purchasing this car. It has been nothing but problematic since I bought it, with the battery needing to be replaced more than six times. Despite taking it to the dealership, they have only suggested that the battery is the issue. Unfortunately, even after replacing the battery, the car only runs for a few months before it fails to start again. It is clear that Buick dealers are aware of the issues with these cars, yet they continue to sell them. This is likely why the Verano is being discontinued. I recommend saving your hard-earned money and avoiding this car at all costs.

I have been driving this Verano for 3 weeks and I must say, it has been an interesting experience. While it is a company car and I am grateful for that, I don't think I would personally buy it. The rear seats may not be the most spacious for adults and the trunk lid doesn't open as much as I would like, which can be a bit of a hassle. Additionally, I have to be careful not to hit my head on the trunk lid, which can be painful. However, I have been able to adjust the steering to a comfortable level, although it does block out the temperature and fuel gauge, as well as the top of the speedometer. In terms of fuel efficiency, I am averaging 26-27mpg over a combination of interstate and rural US highways. It's worth noting that Buick no longer offers this vehicle, but I am still grateful for the opportunity to drive it.

In 2015, I purchased a brand new car from Faulkner Buick and for the first three years, I had no complaints except for the car's take-off speed. However, starting in May of this year, I have experienced major problems with the car. Although it has high mileage (130,000), I have another car with more miles and have never had any major issues with it. Unfortunately, this Buick has been nothing but trouble. I had to replace the catalytic converter for about $500-600, followed by the camshaft, belt, and timing sensor for about $6-700. After getting these parts replaced, my car stopped moving on me mid-drive with no warning. I had it towed back to Faulkner, where they informed me that the check engine light was for the transmission. While it is frustrating to have a transmission issue, I am confident that it is not a common occurrence. I am currently waiting for a replacement transmission, which is on backorder. Although it is unfortunate that I have to pay for the service without any discounts or courtesy vehicles, I am still satisfied with my decision to purchase this car. I believe that the transmission issue is an isolated incident and I would still recommend this vehicle to others. I have had some expensive issues with my car, including the recent replacement of the blower which cost around $800. Despite the cost, I have invested a lot of money into the car because I am on payments, and it will be paid off next year. I am confident that I can handle any future repairs that may arise. While I have had some issues with my current Buick, I am not deterred from considering an upgrade to an Enclave. I understand that every car model can have its own unique issues, and I am willing to take that risk. I am currently experiencing some issues with the gear shift, but I am taking the necessary steps to have it replaced. I am confident that I can afford this replacement and any future repairs that may be necessary. Overall, I am satisfied with my current car and am looking forward to the future with confidence.

I have recently purchased a used 2016 Verano with 28,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, after only three weeks of ownership, the AC system has malfunctioned and requires a new compressor.
