The Acura MDX is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by the Japanese automaker Honda under its luxury Acura division since 2000. First generation (YD1; 2001)
Derived from Honda's Global mid-size platform which underpins cars like the Honda Accord, Acura TL, TSX and Odyssey, it is powered by a J35A3 3.5 L SOHC 24 valve V6 engine with VTEC. Curb weight is 4,451 lb (2,019 kg), with a 106.3 in (2,700 mm) wheelbase and 8 in (200 mm) of ground clearance. The cargo floor can flip up to provide two additional seats. The vehicle is designed to hold 7 passengers, but the third row seats are small and only seat two, in contrast to the Odyssey and Pilot whose third row holds three passengers.
The vehicle features an automatic four wheel drive system (named VTM-4) that engages during off the line acceleration as well as when wheel slippage is detected. Additionally, the system offers a lock mode which can be activated and operated at low speeds and provides permanent 4WD and the equivalent of a locked rear differential; designed for climbing steep hills and getting out of stuck situations. To reduce drivetrain noise and increase fuel efficiency, the system runs as front wheel drive during normal cruising. The VTM-4 AWD system in the MDX has the same design as the VTM-4 systems found in the Honda Pilot and Honda Ridgeline. It is different than Honda's "RealTime AWD" system in the Honda CR-V and other models in that it can lock and it attempts to predict when traction will be lost and apply power to all four wheels before slippage occurs (by monitoring throttle inputs).
The navigation system and DVD entertainment system (also popular on other Honda/Acura models, such as the CR-V and Odyssey) options were mutually exclusive in the 2002 model. Both could be ordered at the same time since the 2003 model. The navigation option comes with a backup camera since the 2003 model. Since 2005, the navigation system featured information from Zagat about restaurants and other points of interest. The 2003 model was rated as Ultra Low Emission Vehicle. The first two model years' 3.5-liter V6 engine produces 240 hp (179 kW) and 245 lb⋅ft (332 N⋅m) of torque from 3000 to 5000 rpm. For the 2003 model, the engine was improved to produce 20 hp (15 kW) more power than the earlier models, and the wheel designs were updated. The 2004 through 2006 engine received a modest increase in power and produces 265 hp (198 kW) and 253 lb⋅ft (343 N⋅m). The 2004 model is credited with a top speed of 137 mph, and a 0-60 time of 7.1 seconds. The 2004 model features dual tail pipes instead of the single pipe in earlier models, side curtain airbags, new head lights and tail lights, and new wheels. Some chrome trimmings on the 2004 model use matte finish to distinguish from the polished shiny finish on earlier models. Little changed for the MDX during the 2006 model year with a few minor revisions to the vehicle's chrome and faux wood interior trim which could now be had with a dark grey wood (as opposed to reddish wood on earlier models), and also a black dash and steering wheel in tan interiors.

We were not hit by any metal objects. The Mdx is in perfect working order and we are now told no one will cover the damage. Insurance and the Dealership. We are writing to find out how we can get a fair outcome from our car becoming unusable due to manufactures defect. We have not touched the airbag or the car since this happened. Would we be able to have it inspected?

- Summary: I have a 2005 MDX. It allows me to take out my key without putting it in park. Being unaware, I turned it off while it was still in drive and it rolled back into another parked vehicle November of 2019. There is a report with the police department and my insurance covered the other vehicle's repair costs. It has rolled several times in the last couple years but luckily not into other cars. I don't remember having this problem prior to the last couple years. It is a safety issue and dangerous to others and if I can't get it repaired I would need to get rid of it. The problem is it is still in very good shape otherwise and has many more miles to give. There is no warning to help me remember to put it in park. This started happening sometime in mid 2018. Do I have any recourse?

AFTER THE REP INSPECTED THE VEHICLE THEY SAID THAT THEY FOUND NO MANUFACTURER DEFECTS BUT THEY COULD NOT SAY WHY THE AIRBAG DEPLOYED. AFTER A FEW WEEKS GOING BACK AND FORTH WITH CLIENT REALIONS FOR ACURA THEY SAID THERE LEGAL TEAM SAID THEY FIND NO MANUFACTURER DEFECTS AND TO CALL MY INSURANCE COMPANY.THANKS FOR TAKING A LOOK AT THIS.

- Summary: Honda is recalling certain model year 2005 Pilot vehicles manufactured July 29, 2004, through August 29, 2005; model year 2005-2006 Acura MDX vehicles manufactured September 16, 2004, through September 22, 2005; and model year 2005 Acura RL vehicles manufactured March 1, 2004, through June 29, 2005. An electrical capacitor may have been damaged during the manufacturing of the Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) control module causing intermittent, automatic, minor brake application. However, if the driver applies the brakes while the VSA is malfunctioning, the vehicle may come to an abrupt stop. Additionally, due to a loose ground connection, certain model year 2005 Pilots have a VSA system that may apply partial brake force, without the illumination of the brake lights, whether or not the driver is using the brakes.
- Consequence: Sudden inadvertent braking, especially without illumination of the brake lights, may increase the risk of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy: Owners will be notified and instructed to take their vehicles to a dealer of their respective brand. The dealer will install a partial wiring harness containing a capacitor for the VSA modulator, free of charge. The affected model year 2005 Pilots will have their ground connection tightened. The interlock lever of the ignition switch may deform, which can allow the interlock function of a vehicle with an automatic transmission to be defeated.
- Consequence: Removal of the ignition key when the gear selector of a vehicle with an automatic transmission has not been shifted to the park position can allow the vehicle to roll away, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Honda will notify owners and instruct them to take their vehicle to a Honda or Acura dealer. The dealer will install an updated shift interlock lever and, if necessary, replace any necessary part of the ignition switch, free of charge. The recall began on February 22, 2013. I've had my MDX for over 5 years now, and it has 126,000 miles on it. I'm happy to say that I haven't had any problems with it, and it still runs great. I would definitely consider buying another one in the future.

I love driving my MDX! It's such a smooth and comfortable SUV, with plenty of power to get you where you want to go. Plus, the visibility is fantastic - I can see so much more of the countryside than I could in my sedan. And with the seat warmer, it's perfect for this winter season. Overall, I think it's a fantastic SUV for the price!

At first, I was a bit intimidated by the size of the car, but once I got used to it, I found that I actually prefer driving my Acura MDX over my Honda Accord/Coupe. One of the things I really appreciate about this car is how quiet and smooth it runs. Overall, I'm really happy with our choice of vehicle.

I've had my MDX for 2 months and I'm really enjoying driving it. It's a comfortable and reliable car, although I do wish the gas mileage was a bit better. One thing I've noticed is that the automatic door locks don't engage when the car is being driven, which is a feature I've had on all my previous vehicles. It would also be great to have keyless entry and a more sensitive automatic headlight mechanism.

If you are considering purchasing a 2005 Acura MDX, I would advise against it. While we did use ours for a decade without any issues from 2010 (when we bought it used) until 2014, we have since spent a significant amount of money on maintenance and repairs, including transmission, brakes, spark plugs, coils, batteries, and tires. Some of these expenses have even been repeated. In the last year alone, we have spent approximately $11,000, and the car has once again broken down this morning. Looking back, I wish we had invested in a new car instead of constantly pouring money into this one. While it did serve us well for the first decade, the constant flow of expenses has become too much to handle. I hope this information helps you make an informed decision.

Overall, this has been a great vehicle. Although I did experience an issue with the torque converter at 57,000 miles, Acura was kind enough to cover a large portion of the repair cost. I absolutely adore my MDX and can't seem to find anything that would make me want to sell it. I usually trade in my cars every three years, but after owning this one for five years, I plan on keeping it for a while longer. The design and interior technology are both fantastic and really add to the overall experience.

The SUV is amazing, but unfortunately, the transmission is not working properly. It slips, which could be dangerous and cause an accident. I am currently looking for someone to rebuild my transmission, as it started having issues at 150,000 miles.

This car has been a disappointment since day one. Despite paying $45,592 for it, we have had to spend an additional $6,465 on repairs since 2005. The transmission failed at 71,000 miles and the dealer is asking for $4,000 to repair it. Unfortunately, this is more than 22% of the original cost of the vehicle. In addition, the Bluetooth stopped working at 50,000 miles and the engine required $3,278 worth of repairs at 60,000 miles. As a primary family vehicle, we expected better reliability and performance. These issues have led me to lose faith in Honda products and I will not be purchasing from them again.

Hi there! I've had this truck for over 4 years now and unfortunately, I've had to take it to the dealer at least 5 times for various problems. While I really like the design, I do think that the quality could use some improvement. I've had issues with the starter, valve, transmission, shocks, and more. Thanks for listening!
