2013 Buick Verano problems
The Buick Verano (Chinese: 威朗) is a compact car manufactured by SAIC-GM for the GM's Buick brand since 2010. It debuted at the North American International Auto Show on January 10, 2011, during a preview of Buick's then upcoming 2012 model. It is the first compact marketed by Buick in the United States since the 1998 Buick Skylark. Verano is Spanish for summer.
The Verano, the Buick Excelle GT, which was developed for the Chinese market, and the Opel Astra/Vauxhall Astra sedan share General Motors' Delta II platform with the Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Orlando, and Opel/Vauxhall Zafira Tourer. In the US, it was manufactured by General Motors from 2012 to 2017.
First generation (2011)
Jim Federico, Executive Director and Vehicle Chief Engineer for Verano, led the vehicle development team and David Lyon, Buick design director, styled the exterior.
The Verano is essentially a North American-market version of the Chinese-market compact Buick Excelle GT. The Verano's unibody construction uses galvanized steel for its front fenders, hood, roof and door panels and thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) bumper covers. It incorporates acoustical laminated glass, triple door seals, a five-layer interior roof liner, sound absorbing mats, recycled denim insulation and specially manufactured 18-inch forged alloy wheels, which minimize road noise. Buick's VentiPorts reappeared at the Verano's introduction, a styling feature unique to Buick dating back to 1949.
The standard powertrain is a 2.4 L Ecotec direct-injected DOHC I4 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The 2.4 L engine is rated 180 horsepower (130 kW; 180 PS) at 6,700 rpm and 171 lb⋅ft (232 N⋅m; 24 kg⋅m) of torque at 4,900 rpm. The engine is flex-fuel capable, meaning it can use either gasoline, or E85 ethanol (2012–13) • 2.4L, or any combination of the two fuels. EPA fuel economy estimates are 21 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km; 25 mpg‑imp) city and 32 mpg‑US (7.4 L/100 km; 38 mpg‑imp) highway for gasoline. A 2012 on-road mixed highway-city review by the website MPGOMATIC showed an average 26.5 mpg‑US (8.9 L/100 km; 31.8 mpg‑imp) on E85, and 29 mpg‑US (8.1 L/100 km; 35 mpg‑imp) for gasoline.
A 2.0 L turbocharged version became available in late 2012, for the 2013 model year, as did a 6-speed manual transmission. The 2.0 L turbo engine is rated at 250 horsepower (186 kW; 253 PS) and 260 lb⋅ft (353 N⋅m; 36 kg⋅m) of torque. GM estimated acceleration from 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) is 6.2 seconds, matching the number posted by the Buick Regal GS.
For 2016, the Verano added a new Sport Touring Edition which included unique 18″ aluminum black pocket wheels and a rear lip spoiler.
The Verano was phased out from the US market after the 2017 model year. The second generation Verano is sold exclusively in China, leaving Buick without an entry-level sedan in the US market.

- Blind spot monitor system control module malfunction: The blind spot monitor system control module in 2014-2017 Buick Verano models is prone to malfunction and premature failure.
- Noisy wheel bearings: The wheel bearings in some Buick Verano models, particularly between 100,000 and 150,000 miles, can become noisy and require replacement.
- Window regulator plastic component breakage: The plastic components of the window regulators in some Buick Verano models are prone to break over time, causing the affected window not to roll up or down.
These issues can vary in severity and frequency, with some being more common in certain model years than others. It is essential for potential buyers to be aware of these problems and consider them when making a purchasing decision. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help mitigate some of these issues and extend the vehicle's lifespan.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-04
- VIN: 1G4PP5SK5D4

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-07
- VIN: 1G4PP5SKXD4
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Vehicle is consuming oil at an excessive rate (with still less than 70000 miles on the odometer) and I have had to keep a close watch on the levels. It is burning a quart right now about every 1400 miles and the problem is only likely to get worse with time. This could cause the engine to fail or catch fire while operating the vehicle, which is quite dangerous, especially at interstate speeds or on mountain roads. Buick has not issued a recall, and yet there is a service bulletin dating from 2016 (Bulletin No.: 13-06-01-003H). I have also read many complaints from other Verano owners about this problem. An engine is one of the most expensive parts of any vehicle, and if Buick will not voluntarily recall this model year to make the needed repairs, the NTSB ought to take a hand in getting a recall of affected vehicles. I don't want to risk my life on the road if this engine fails while the vehicle is in operation.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-11
- VIN: 1G4PR5SK5D4
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Took in for diagnostic and was told rear control module was bad. After 1500 to 1800.00 in repairs still had the same issues within 7 days. I've contacted dealership and general motor. I'm afraid my car will lose power while on highway
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-20
- VIN: 1G4PR5SKXD4
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My Buick Verano keeps running out of oil despite consistent oil changes. It ran out of oil, 3000 miles before my next oil change was due. There are many reports online of other owners of the same vehicle having the same issue. Recently, my car cut off in the middle of the street Without any warning due to no oil in the engine. The low oil warning light never came on. This is the second time that this has occurred. The first time the mechanic just said it was low on oil. Now my car will not restart. Again my next oil change was not due for another 3000 miles.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-28
- VIN: 1G4PP5SK8D4
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The PCV orifice that is located inside the intake manifold is known to clog due to a manufacture defect, which then produces high pressure inside the crankcase. The pressure then forces high amounts of oil through the valve cover orifice into the intake breather box. The oil then fills up inside and get into the engine air filter and throttle body. The high amounts of oil being sucked into the intake will leave the engine running with zero oil, thousands of miles before a oil change is due. This would obviously destroy the engine if oil is not added regularly. There is also a high risk of the rear main seal blowing due to the high pressurization of the crankcase. This is a very known defect and without a question, needs to be issued as a recall.

- Summary: 2013 Buick Verano engine ceased after excessive oil consumption (which was NOT indicated by the oil light). Multiple lawsuits have been filed for cars with the SAME engine, but my specific car has not been included - and GM shut down my car-specific lawsuits due to "design" flaws that they don't take credit for. NO warning signs, and my car stopped in the middle of the road, putting my safety at risk. Oil change notification DID NOT work, and oil light did not come on at all. In addition, a "service passenger airbag" light comes on whenever anyone sits in the passenger seat (I have seen recalls regarding this as well, but are not specific to my car). Very disappointed.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-02-13
- VIN: 1G4PP5SK2D4
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: FIRST, MY CAR WOULD HESITATE WHEN GOING UP MY DRIVEWAY AND I HAD TO GIVE IT THE GAS SO IT WOULDN'T STOP ON ME. THEN, MY CAR WOULD STOP ON ME AS I WAS DRIVING AT SLOW SPEEDS OR EVEN STOPPED AT RED LIGHTS. I ALMOST GOT HIT SEVERAL TIMES FROM BEHIND DUE TO THIS. THEN, I NOTICED THAT WHEN MY OIL WAS AT 50% I WOULD HAVE TO ADD OIL AND IT WOULD FIX THE ISSUE UNTIL MY OIL LEVEL GOT LOW AGAIN. I WENT FROM CHANGING MY OIL EVERY 5,000 MILES AS TOLD BY THE SALES PERSON TO EVERY 3,000 MILES TO WHAT SEEMED LIKE EVERY 1,500 MILES. THE LAST INCIDENT WAS WHEN I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK ON A MAIN HIGHWAY AND MY CAR JUST KILLED ON ME. I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO THE SHOULDER BUT HAD TO BE TOWED HOME. WHILE ALL OF THIS WAS GOING ON I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED IT ALONG WITH OTHER PARTS STORES AND HAD THEM RUN THE MACHINE TEST ON IT AND I WOULD NEVER GET A CODE. MY WIFE HAS BEEN DOING SOME RESEARCH AND IT WAS BROUGHT TO HER ATTENTION THAT GM KNOWS ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND THERE IS A COMPANY WHAT CAN GIVE US A NEW ENGINE FOR $5,000 AND THEN THEY MAKE A CLAIM AND GM BUYS THE OLD MOTOR FROM THE COMPANY. I WOULD BE NICE IF GM WOULD PAY FOR A NEW MOTOR FOR EVERYONE THAT TRUSTED IN THEIR VEHICLES. THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT CHEAP AND THERE IS NO WAY ANYONE SHOULD HAVE THIS TYPE OF ISSUE AND GM NOT BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR DEFECTED MOTORS THAT THEY ARE AWARE OF. I NOW HAVE A BROKEN CAR THAT JUST SITS AND I HAVE TO MAKE OTHER ARRANGEMENTS TO GET TO AND FROM WORK UNTIL I CAN FIX MY CAR WHICH IS BUY A NEW ENGINE. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A GM PERSON BUT LOOKS LIKE I WILL HAVE TO START TO LOOK OTHER PLACES. THE SAD PART IS I LIKE MY CAR AND OTHER THAN THE ENGINE I HAVE HAD NO OTHER MAJOR ISSUES. *TR

- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the engine oil pan/block heater cord with a new cord that is rated for temperatures of minus 40 degree Celsius. The recall began in August 2014. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 14257.

Great car for the price! It's affordable luxury for the average person.

I purchased a certified pre-owned 2013 Buick Verano with 30K miles in August 2016 and I am still happy with it overall. Although some people complain about the grill, I personally think it looks expensive and unique. My younger brother even mistook it for a Bentley at first glance! The size of this car makes it easy to maneuver and park, and it has a smooth and quiet ride that Buick is known for. However, the acceleration is a bit lackluster. I preferred the 2013 Regal Turbo, but unfortunately, it was above my budget. The Verano is still a great car otherwise, but if you have an extra 3K to spend, I would recommend getting the Regal Turbo. I have had to change the front driver tire twice in the first year of ownership, and now in the second year, I have changed all four tires. Additionally, the fake leather seats on the convenience trim stain really easily. The car died on me in the first year, but it turned out to be just the battery, which was replaced. Other than the battery and the tires, it has only required regular maintenance. I really enjoy the service I receive for scheduled maintenance at the dealership. I still have it now at 83k miles, and it has become even more reliable over time. I feel like it drives better now that I've had it for longer. Since the battery replacement, no other major parts have needed to be replaced, only regular maintenance. In 2022, I changed the battery again, now 6 years later, and have had no other mechanical issues. I think the OEM tires and battery are of lower quality, so I replaced them with better quality ones, and the car is performing even better now.

I've had my Verano for about a month now and I'm really impressed! The ruby red color attracts a lot of attention and shows off the car's great lines. The interior finishes are fantastic and make it look like a more expensive car. The seats are very comfortable for four people and the trunk is big. The car is loaded with features and has more than enough acceleration. I'm very happy with my selection!

Congratulations on your new Verano with the Leather Group package and additional options including nav! It sounds like you made a great choice. This car has all the bells and whistles you could want, except for the turbo, which you wisely decided against. The base engine (2.4) has sufficient power and the six-speed transmission shifts super smoothly. The handling is outstanding and it's the quietest car you've ever ridden in! The Bose music system is incredible and the rear seat handles your 6' 2

It sounds like you've got a pretty good car on your hands! It's great for young drivers who are just starting out. The music functions and electronics are top-notch, but it might be best to avoid the Continental tires that come with it - they're not the best and can be prone to blowouts. The trunk space could be a bit bigger, especially if you're looking to fit golf clubs in there. It moves well once it gets up to speed, although the handling can be a bit questionable at times, especially on windy days.

This was my mom's car. I noticed prior to her passing that the clear coat was coming off. Unfortunately, at the time, I had too many other things to worry about. I was unaware of when the warranty ran out. After my mother's passing, I contacted Buick and they scheduled for me to go to a Buick dealership to get an estimate. At the dealership, I was told that I was not the only one who had brought their vehicle in with this problem. However, they informed me that it would not be covered and the cost would be $1500-2000. I have never owned a vehicle where the paint did this. Overall, I am pleased with the Buick, but I would not purchase it again due to the way this was handled.

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with the car I recently purchased. I was under the impression that the car would be quiet and luxurious, but unfortunately, I have been experiencing a lot of road noise. I took the car back to the dealer and they kindly had me test drive another one, but unfortunately, I experienced the same issue. It's quite disappointing as I was really looking forward to enjoying a peaceful ride. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I had a new problem with my car since my last review. The Climate Control stopped blowing cold air and started pumping out high heat like the heater was on, just 3 blocks away from my dealer. I immediately pulled into the dealership and the Service Adviser and Service Manager acknowledged the issue. The Service Adviser was able to get the cold air working again, but unfortunately, it stopped working again as soon as I left the dealership. I returned and the dealer put me in a loaner and said they would call me later that day. When they did, the Service Adviser informed me that the mechanic couldn't get the Climate Control to fail, so they couldn't find anything wrong. I understand that this can be frustrating, but I hope we can work together to find a solution. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

We have been driving the Verano for three years now, and my first impressions have proven to be long-lasting. Although it is a heavy vehicle with a so-so engine that drinks gas, especially in winter, the cabin heats up very quickly in the cold. The view out of the back is poor, and it's a two-wheel drive car, which can result in poor performance in winter. Unfortunately, we get five months of snow a year. One January day last year, my wife got stuck, and three separate sets of neighbors had to push the car down our street. However, on the positive side, my daughter and wife both love the Verano because its bulk makes them feel safe.
