2000 Buick Regal problems

buick logo

The Buick Regal is a line of mid-size cars marketed by Buick since 1973. For nearly its entire production, the Regal has served as the premium mid-size/intermediate offering of the Buick product range. Introduced as a submodel of the Buick Century, the model line is currently in its sixth generation. From the 1970s to the 1990s, the Regal served as the Buick counterpart of the Pontiac Grand Prix and Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme.

Originally introduced as a personal luxury coupe, the Regal was later expanded to a full model line. To showcase its success in NASCAR racing, from 1982 to 1987, Buick introduced the Buick Regal Grand National, Regal T-Type, and the limited-production Buick GNX. During the 1990s, while the four-door sedan superseded the two-door coupe entirely, forced-induction engines made their return, with superchargers replacing turbochargers.

For 1999, the Buick Regal inaugurated the sale of GM vehicles in the Chinese market, with the 1997 design lasting through 2008. Following the 2004 model year, Buick retired the nameplate in North America, with the Regal replaced by the Buick LaCrosse.

For 2008, Opel introduced the Opel Insignia as its largest sedan, with Buick rebranding the model line as the Regal for the Chinese market. For 2011, GM reintroduced the Regal to North America, rebranding the Insignia sedan for North America. For 2018, Buick introduced the second-generation Opel Insignia, sourcing all production from Germany; alongside a first-ever liftback sedan, the Regal TourX was the first Buick station wagon in 22 years.

After 2020, as the division shifted away from car model lines, Buick ended sales of the Regal in North America.

Common 2000 Buick Regal problems

The Buick Regal 2000 is known for several common problems based on complaints from owners of this car. The main issue of this model year lies with its faulty timing chain, which warranted nine written complaints from owners.

The electrical issues in the 2000 Buick Regal can be severe, causing the car to abruptly lose acceleration and power after ten minutes of driving at around 60 mph, leaving the owner stranded on the interstate. The power steering may seize, and the dashboard may flicker, and within five minutes, even the flashers and lights may die out.

The 2000 Buick Regal also tends to develop issues with its mass air flow sensor (MAF) and crankshaft position sensor (CPS). Many owners have reported that their vehicles would stutter and stall randomly when they’re driving at various speeds, which can surprise owners and result in dangerous situations, especially if it happens at highway speeds.

The power windows in the 2000 Buick Regal may also stop working, with the problem occurring in models made from 1990 to 2011. The culprit in this issue is a faulty switch, which is less expensive to replace than the power window motor or the window regulator.

In addition to these common problems, the 2000 Buick Regal is also known for its key getting stuck in the ignition, a malfunctioning power window system, and failure of the fuel pump, various sensors, and the water pump.

In conclusion, while the Buick Regal has had some good years, the 2000 model year is not one of them due to its numerous reliability issues and customer complaints.

2000 Buick Regal recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 10 recalls for different components of the 2000 Buick Regal.

2015-10-26
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina and Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1997-2004 Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix, 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala, and 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. The affected vehicles were previously repaired under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 to address the possibility that engine oil may drip onto the hot exhaust manifold.
  • Consequence: Engine oil that drips onto the hot surface of the exhaust manifold may result in a fire.
  • Remedy: The remedy applied under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 did not adequately remove the safety risk. Under the improved remedy, dealers will replace the engine’s front valve cover and gasket. Vehicles that are covered by recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, or 15V-201 that have not yet received the original remedy will instead receive the improved remedy under the original recall number. The recall began on February 19, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Oldsmobile customer service at 1-800-442-6537 and Pontiac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 15757. Note: Until the improved remedy has been applied, owners are advised to park their vehicle outside since the fire risk exists even when the vehicle is unattended.

SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A CONDITION IN WHICH DROPS OF ENGINE OIL MAY BE DEPOSITED ON THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD THROUGH HARD BRAKING.

Congratulations on reaching 200,000 miles! Your car has been a reliable companion for many years, and it's great to hear that it's still going strong. With regular maintenance and the use of high-quality synthetic motor oil like Mobil 1 EP, your car has been able to achieve impressive mileage on long highway drives. Although you've had a couple of setbacks on the road, it's clear that your car is still very sporty and responsive. It's a testament to the quality of your vehicle that it's been able to reach such a high mileage with only a few minor issues. Here's to seeing it run towards the 300K mark!

The Supercharged engine is really impressive when you need it, without sacrificing fuel economy. Although I dislike buying the premium gas that it requires. It has a professional and classy look which is perfect for my business. While it doesn't corner well, the quiet and smooth ride is definitely a plus. Unfortunately, I have had to make two repairs in 33 months: the driver heated seat ($1,000) and temperature sensor ($700), which leaves me questioning its reliability.

  3. Eriberto Rau 2024-11-08

Great ride with excellent fuel economy for an engine this size. You can easily average 30MPG on Interstates.

  4. Buck Jakubowski 2024-10-27

Your vehicle rides and handles great with no serious performance or repair problems. The only issue you have mentioned is that the 'check engine' light seems to come on whenever you change brands of gasoline. Additionally, you have noted that your ride is smooth and very quiet.

  5. Brennan Heathcote 2024-10-25

I bought my 2000 Buick Regal GS in June 2004 with 114k miles on it. Since then, I've only had to replace the supercharger belt and serpentine belt. This car has lots of power, is very comfortable, and gets 35+ mpg on the highway. It's an awesome combination of luxury, comfort, and performance. Running with Mobil 1 synthetic oil, the motor uses absolutely zero oil! What a machine!
