The Buick Regal is a line of mid-size cars marketed by Buick since 1973. For nearly its entire production, the Regal has served as the premium mid-size/intermediate offering of the Buick product range. Introduced as a submodel of the Buick Century, the model line is currently in its sixth generation. From the 1970s to the 1990s, the Regal served as the Buick counterpart of the Pontiac Grand Prix and Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme.

Originally introduced as a personal luxury coupe, the Regal was later expanded to a full model line. To showcase its success in NASCAR racing, from 1982 to 1987, Buick introduced the Buick Regal Grand National, Regal T-Type, and the limited-production Buick GNX. During the 1990s, while the four-door sedan superseded the two-door coupe entirely, forced-induction engines made their return, with superchargers replacing turbochargers.

For 1999, the Buick Regal inaugurated the sale of GM vehicles in the Chinese market, with the 1997 design lasting through 2008. Following the 2004 model year, Buick retired the nameplate in North America, with the Regal replaced by the Buick LaCrosse.

For 2008, Opel introduced the Opel Insignia as its largest sedan, with Buick rebranding the model line as the Regal for the Chinese market. For 2011, GM reintroduced the Regal to North America, rebranding the Insignia sedan for North America. For 2018, Buick introduced the second-generation Opel Insignia, sourcing all production from Germany; alongside a first-ever liftback sedan, the Regal TourX was the first Buick station wagon in 22 years.

After 2020, as the division shifted away from car model lines, Buick ended sales of the Regal in North America.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-01-22
  • VIN: 2G4WB55K011
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: ON 1997-2004 "W PLATFORM" GM AUTOS, INCLUDING MY REGAL, THE ABS SENSOR DESIGN IS FLAWED IN THAT IT'S WIRING IS LOCATED IN AN EXPOSED LOCATION AT THE INSIDE BOTTOM OF THE WHEEL HUB THAT ANY ROAD DITRITUS CAN IMPACT, CAUSING THE TRACK SYSTEM OFF DASH LIGHT TO COME ON AND ABS BRAKING TO FAIL. I AM NOW ON MY 6TH REPLACEMENT INCIDENT SINCE 2006, WHEN IT HAPPENED THE 1ST TIME. (2 EACH ON THE FRONT WHEEL HUBS AND 1 ON A REAR. DO NOT KNOW AT THIS TIME WHICH WHEEL IS INVOLVED THIS TIME,) EVERY TIME THE LITTLE SENSOR WIRE BREAKS OR GETS CUT & YOU CAN'T JUST FIX THE WIRE, IT REQUIRES A TOTAL REPLACEMENT OF THE WHEEL HUB AND COSTS NEARLY $500 A POP. THE WIRE IS RIDICULOUSLY EASY TO DAMAGE JUST BY DRIVING THROUGH PLOW DRIFT IN THE DRIVEWAY OR HITTING SMALL TREE BRANCH DETRITUS ON THE ROAD THAT BOUNCES OFF THE UNDERCARRIAGE AND SNAGS THE WIRE. MOST COMMONLY IT BREAKS INSIDE THE INSULATION AND INTERMITENTLY SHORTS OUT WHEN IT GETS WET, (& DISAPPEARS WHEN IT DRIES OUT AGAIN) CAUSING THE ABS SYSTEM TO STUTTER WHEN BRAKING, & MAKING IT EVEN MORE EXPENSIVE TO DIAGNOSE BEFORE FIXING (AN EXTRA $129). SINCE IT'S A COMMON (& FREQUENT) DANGEROUS SAFETY DEFECT ON ALL "W PLATFORM" GM VEHICLES FROM '97-'04, I FIND IT CURIOUS THAT THE NTSB HASN'T ORDERED GM TO FIND A FIX FOR THIS LONG AGO.

  • Summary: TAKATA RECALL... WHILE DRIVING IN OUR CITY ALL INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHT WENT TO FLASHING AND THE GAUGES WERE QUIVERING, BELLS WENT OFF AND MY CAR DIED RIGHT THERE IN THE TRAFFIC WHILE GOING 25 MPH. I HAD MY DAUGHTER AND GRANDSON IN THE CAR WITH ME AND BY THE GRACE OF GOD WE AVOIDED AN ACCIDENT. CAR WOULDN'T RESTART FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES BUT EVENTUALLY DID WITH THE SAME THING HAPPENING WITH THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. DAUGHTER GOT THE CAR OFF THE ROAD. HUSBAND GOT THE CAR HOME AND LEFT IT. IT WOULDN'T START BACK THE NEXT DAY BUT AFTER CONTINUALLY TRYING IT EVENTUALLY STARTED BUT HAD A HORRIBLE GRINDING NOISE AND THE INSTRUMENT PANEL STILL GOING CRAZY. HUSBAND CALLED OUR LOCAL GARAGE WHILE I STARTED A SEARCH ON THE WEB FOR POSSIBLE EXPLANATIONS. I CAME ACROSS OTHERS WITH THE SAME COMPLAINT AS WE WERE EXPERIENCING AND FOUND THAT THEIR PROBLEM WAS THE IGNITION SWITCH. OUR LOCAL GARAGE SUGGESTED WE LOOK FOR GROUND WIRE PROBLEMS. I WATCHED A VIDEO OF A CAR DOING THE SAME THING MINE WAS DOING, THAT PERSON REPLACED THE IGNITION SWITCH AND ALL WAS WELL. I READ AND WATCHED A VIDEO OF WHERE ONE SAID TO TURN ON THE FLASHERS OR HEADLIGHTS BEFORE TRY TO START THE CAR, THIS ALLOWED THE CAR TO START WITH NO PROBLEMS. TRIED IT AND IT WORKED. ONE OTHER THING WITHOUT THE FLASHERS OR HEADLIGHTS ON, THE SIFTER IS LOCKED AND WILL NOT COME OUT OF PARK. CALLED OUR LOCAL DEALERSHIP ABOUT A RECALL AND WAS LAUGHED AT AND SPOKEN TO AS IF I WAS A CHILD. SHE SAID IF THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE IGNITION SWITCH AND 1 PERSON HAD A COMPLAINT THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN A RECALL. I TOLD HER THERE WAS PLENTY DOCUMENTATION ON YOUTUBE TO GO WATCH IT. I AM READING MANY THAT ARE CALLING THIS AS A "DEATH TRAP" AND THAT SOME HAVE DIED BECAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM. *TR

2001 Buick Regal recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 8 recalls for different components of the 2001 Buick Regal.

2015-10-26
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina and Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1997-2004 Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix, 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala, and 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. The affected vehicles were previously repaired under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 to address the possibility that engine oil may drip onto the hot exhaust manifold.
  • Consequence: Engine oil that drips onto the hot surface of the exhaust manifold may result in a fire.
  • Remedy: The remedy applied under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 did not adequately remove the safety risk. Under the improved remedy, dealers will replace the engine’s front valve cover and gasket. Vehicles that are covered by recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, or 15V-201 that have not yet received the original remedy will instead receive the improved remedy under the original recall number. The recall began on February 19, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Oldsmobile customer service at 1-800-442-6537 and Pontiac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 15757. Note: Until the improved remedy has been applied, owners are advised to park their vehicle outside since the fire risk exists even when the vehicle is unattended.
2009-04-08
  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING 1,497,516 MY 1997-2003 BUICK REGAL, MY 1998-2003 CHEVROLET LUMINA, MONTE CARLO AND IMPALA, MY 1998-1999 OLDSMOBILE INTRIGUE, MY 1997-2003 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 3.8L V6 NATURALLY ASPIRATED ENGINE. Negative 2001 Buick Regal car reviews

  1. Ethan Steuber 2024-10-02

The car has had some issues since purchase, including the replacement of the catalytic converter, transmission, brakes, and tie rod mount bracket. However, these issues have been resolved and the car is now in good condition. While I had some concerns, I am confident in the car's performance and will continue to drive it.

  2. Milford Harris 2024-07-06

I bought the car used and my wife used it for sales. Luckily, the warranty covered the replacement of the tie rod ends at 30,000 miles. It seems that many GM cars have front suspension problems, and unfortunately, I too have experienced power window issues. It's frustrating when it seems like the problem is fixed, only for it to resurface again. I believe that this may be due to a lack of training or even a dealer scam. However, I have had no transmission problems at 117,000 miles and it still gets over 30 MPG on the highway. I always use Mobile One motor oil and recently replaced the O2 sensor. The car uses no oil, which is great news!

  3. Sterling Schneider 2024-07-04

I purchased this car in July with 127,000 miles on the body and 55,000 on the engine. Unfortunately, I have experienced numerous issues with it since driving it off the lot. Despite my regular maintenance and care, the car has had problems with various sensors, tire valves, coil packs, and a wheel bearing that fell apart during replacement. Recently, I had to replace the entire exhaust system, catalytic converter, and additional sensors. The radiator also cracked and leaked into the engine, causing it to fail. Even after getting an oil change, the engine overheated and cracked, causing the front of the car to go up in smoke. Although the car has some reliable aspects, I would advise thoroughly inspecting it before purchasing from anyone.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share a quick story with you. In October of 1991, I had some trouble with my car. The engine kept quitting while I was driving, which was definitely frustrating. I had to get it towed to the dealer twice! After some investigation, they found out that the PCM module wasn't communicating with the other modules. They replaced it and the problem was solved... until 08/02. Recently, the car wouldn't start on two separate occasions. I tried turning the key, but nothing happened. After about 40 attempts, the car finally started. The dealer thinks it might be another issue with the PCM module. Thanks for listening!

Positive 2001 Buick Regal car reviews

  1. Agustin Dach 2025-01-08

Your Regal LS is a fantastic car! It has plenty of power and can achieve up to 30 mpg, which is great for long drives. The big trunk is also a huge plus, especially with the fold-down back seats. I won't tell your wife about the lumber, but it's great to know that the car can handle heavy loads too!

  2. Nash Bechtelar 2024-11-23

Very rapid but only if needed via Supercharger. Decent gas mileage: 20.5 city, as high as 29 highway (normally about 27). Great car! It's very pleasing to look at and handles well. Plus, it goes very fast with terrific acceleration upon request.

  3. Tremayne Padberg 2024-09-12

I got my Regal after driving SUV's for the previous 5 years. The ride is fairly refined and handling is excellent. However, I have noticed that there is limited leg room for passengers in the back seat. On the bright side, I have about 28000 miles on it and have had no mechanical problems whatsoever. Although I feel it is a little underpowered, this is only evident when climbing in significant hilly terrain. It's really unfortunate that Buick has discontinued this model in their lineup.

  4. Edward Kshlerin 2024-09-05

You've got yourself an all-around great car!

  5. Fermin Denesik 2024-08-17

This car offers great value for money compared to anything in its class. It's a pleasure to drive on both short and long trips, and it's very comfortable. It has better reliability, power, accessories, and style than the Toyota Camry in the family. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.
