The Land Rover Discovery Sport (internal code L550) is a compact luxury crossover SUV produced by British automotive company Jaguar Land Rover since 2014, under their Land Rover marque, and since 2017 their best-selling model.

Introduced in late 2014, it replaces the Freelander in a revised Land Rover range of vehicles, with Discovery joining Range Rover as a sub-brand. Contrary to its predecessor, the slightly larger car is also available in a seven seat layout.

The pre-facelift Discovery Sport is based on the JLR D8/LR-MS platform, customised for off-road applications, and is powered by a range of four cylinder petrol and diesel engines. It is the first Discovery introduced with a unibody structure.

Land Rover described the facelifted Discovery Sport as being based on the JLR PTA platform, a rebrand of the D8. It is also used by the Jaguar E-Pace and L551 version of Range Rover Evoque.

Common 2020 Land rover Discovery sport problems

The Land Rover Discovery Sport 2020 has a variety of common problems that have been reported by owners. One of the most frequently mentioned issues is a creaking noise from the stabilizer bar bushes, which can be particularly noticeable over rougher roads. This problem is caused by faulty front stabilizer bushes, and the only solution is to replace the faulty items.

Another common problem with the Land Rover Discovery Sport 2020 is a vibration from the front brakes. This issue can cause a vibration through the steering wheel and brake pedal, and can also cause extra wear on other steering and suspension components. The solution to this problem is to replace the front brake discs and pads, as well as the caliper bolts.

A rattle from underneath the vehicle is another issue that has been reported by owners of the Land Rover Discovery Sport 2020. This problem is caused by a faulty heat shield, and can be fixed by replacing the faulty item.

In addition to these mechanical issues, the Land Rover Discovery Sport 2020 has also been recalled several times due to various problems. For example, in January 2017, the left-hand lower control arm to the knuckle joint in the front suspension was incorrectly assembled, which could cause the front suspension to fail if the vehicle was exposed to a shock impact such as a deep pothole.

In March 2017, it was discovered that the chemical mix ratio in some initiators used in the manufacture of seatbelt pre-tensioners may not have met specification, which could cause the initiator to malfunction in the event of a crash of sufficient severity.

Overall, the Land Rover Discovery Sport 2020 has a number of common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues include a creaking noise from the stabilizer bar bushes, a vibration from the front brakes, a rattle from underneath the vehicle, and various recalls due to mechanical and electrical issues.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-13
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: SALCP2FX9LH
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: I drive a 2020 Land Rover Discovery Sport, which was serviced over three months. The certified dealership replaced the head gasket, fuel injectors, cylinder heads, and starter engines. The car was less than three years old and had never had any issues before service. The car had a sweet burning odor and very rough gear shifts post-service. Two days before the fire, the check engine light came on within the car. The dealership repeatedly assured me that the vehicle was safe to drive and the symptoms I experienced were normal. As soon as I pulled into my house from the doctor (less than an hour after I called the dealership to speak about the check engine light), I noticed a thin white smoke coming from my engine. I popped the hood, contacted the dealership, and they told me to watch it to see if it stopped smoking. I thought it was overheating. The engine erupted into flames, and the vehicle was almost a total loss. After researching the car, the Land Rover model seems to have had electrical elements recalled along with issues similar to the coolant system. My insurance agency has launched a fire investigation in an attempt to recreate the cause of the fire. Evidence is attached below.

SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-27
  • VIN: SALCK2FX2LH
  • Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Last Thursday, 5/27/2021, I was driving on the interstate and all of sudden my vehicle became inoperable due to the same issue I have been having all along--mechanical failure of the suspension of the car/wheel. The bushings, bearings, alignment is out of whack. The wheel is out of alignment of the brake calipers. The wheel was literally rubbing against the brake caliper. I could have been killed due to faulty and mechanical failure of this vehicle. The car is broken and obviously Land Rover is clueless as to how to fix it for good. It's a lemon! The car was inoperable and had to be towed to the Buckhead dealership by LR Roadside. Furthermore, I am in the final stages of the application process of the Georgia Lemon Law to have this car replaced by Land Rover. No one should have to go through the problems I have had with this vehicle and with Land Rover. It is available for inspection upon request. It is currently at the Buckhead Land Rover dealership in Atlanta, GA. My safety was at risk because due to the wheel malfunction the wheel/tire could have locked up and caused my vehicle to flip and harm all others on the Interstate. Yes the dealer has confirmed this problem. They don't seem to know how to fix it. To my knowledge the vehicle has NOT been inspected by the manufacturer, the police or insurance representatives. Sadly, this is how scary this incident was--as there were NO warning lamps, messages or symptoms of the problem prior to failure. Land Rover is trying to underhandedly charge me almost $900.00 for their failure to repair my vehicle. I shouldn't have to pay a dime for this! This vehicle should be replaced.

Negative 2020 Land rover Discovery sport car reviews

  1. Abel Fisher 2024-11-18

This Land Rover seems to be experiencing some issues. We've noticed some problems with the trim and seals, even though we've only driven 5,000 miles. As first-time buyers, we're feeling quite disappointed, but we're hoping to sell it soon and move on. We'll definitely be more careful with our next purchase.

  2. Nathan Conroy 2024-09-23

This 4 cylinder car has been disappointing in terms of fuel efficiency, as it consumes gas at a rate similar to an 8 cylinder car. Despite being told that it would get 20-25 miles per gallon, I am only getting 12-14 miles per gallon while driving locally in the city and working from home. I have been attempting to return the car due to being misled by the salesman and manager of Land Rover Southbay, but have not made any progress with the dealership or manufacturer. Additionally, the air conditioner in the car is inadequate, with insufficient vents causing discomfort for passengers in the back seat. The cup holders are also too small and tight, making it difficult to remove cups without spilling. The car seats are stiff and not as comfortable as those in other cars I have leased. The voice command feature in the car is also unreliable. Despite these issues, I remain confident in my ability to find a better car that meets my needs and preferences.

Hi there! I noticed that there are a few small issues with your vehicle, but the biggest one seems to be the oil dilution problem. In my case, I needed an oil service after only 10 months or 12,000 km. Additionally, the DPF regeneration doesn't seem to be working properly, and there were no warnings indicating that it wasn't working. It seems like the design fault of the previous model has now become an issue for users. Let me know if you need any help with this!

  4. Lexus Friesen 2024-03-06

I recently returned from a trip to Vegas where I rented a 2020 Discovery Sport with under 8000 miles. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with the vehicle. The throttle response was lacking and had a terrible lag time, making it difficult to pull out into traffic. Additionally, there were rattles coming from the suspension and the rear hatch was very heavy, making it difficult for my wife to lift. When closing, it shook and rattled. While I understand that it was a rental, I expected more from a Land Rover. A $40,000 vehicle should hold up better than that, especially considering it did not appear to have been abused. However, I do believe that the Discovery Sport has potential and would consider purchasing one for $20,000.

  5. Orlo Schmidt 2024-02-09

I really liked the look of this car and that's what initially caught my attention. However, after test driving it, I found that it wasn't the right fit for me. I agree with the other reviewer who mentioned the turbo lag, which caused the car to jerk when starting or accelerating. This made it difficult to make turns at traffic lights. Additionally, when I parked the car, it would sometimes roll forward a few inches, which was concerning. Despite bringing it in for service, the issue was not resolved. While the car may be suitable for highway driving, I found it challenging to drive in town and get on the highway. As a result, I have decided to return to Lexus once my lease is over.

Positive 2020 Land rover Discovery sport car reviews

  1. Isidro Gottlieb 2024-11-15

With my lease ending, I was considering turning in my Disco and buying a Macan S. However, after test driving a few, I realized that it may not be worth the money. I expected the S to have a noticeable power advantage, but unfortunately, it just wasn't there. The Disco has been a reliable car for me, and the dynamic 286hp version is just as enjoyable to drive as the Macan.

I'm so glad to hear that you're thrilled with the features and options you received!

  3. Fredrick Blick 2024-09-28

Unstoppable in the snow thanks to its adjustable traction settings and high clearance. It's surprisingly spacious for a smaller SUV, with great cargo space. Plus, it's comfortable and fun to drive!

  4. Bradford Labadie 2024-08-15

The Land Rover Discovery Sport is truly unique. It's environmentally friendly, fast, powerful, elegant, and yet relatively simple. What I love most about it is how comfortable it is. There's plenty of room for the driver and family, with the back seat comfortably seating three and ample cargo space for our basic needs. Additionally, this car comes equipped with all-wheel drive and surprising 4x4 options - there are several settings when in 4-wheel drive. It's truly remarkable!

  5. Thomas Pollich 2024-07-26

This is a real SUV with all the bells and whistles. I love it when people buy an SUV and actually take it out for a spin. I've personally enjoyed some off-roading myself, nothing too serious, just some fun trails. It's a blast to drive and the spacious back seats make it even better!
