2006 Buick Lucerne problems
The Buick Lucerne is a full-size car manufactured by General Motors from 2005 to 2011. Named for the city of Lucerne, Switzerland, it served as Buick's top-of-the-line sedan until it was replaced by the second generation Buick LaCrosse.
History
The Lucerne replaced the full-size LeSabre and the Park Avenue in the Buick range, and used a revised G platform, nonetheless referred to by GM as the H platform.
The Lucerne was introduced with the standard 3.8 liter Buick V6 (also known as the GM 3800 engine) or optional 4.6 liter Cadillac Northstar LD8 V8 as well as optional active suspension, marketed as Magnetic Ride Control. For 2005, all General Motors vehicles equipped with the 3.8 L V6 become the first SULEV-compliant vehicles.
The Lucerne featured a row of faux exhaust vents, marketed as "Ventiports," on the front fenders, corresponding to the number of cylinders in the engine — three on each side for the V6 or four for the V8. The CXL trim package added numerous premium features.
The Lucerne was manufactured at GM's Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly Plant alongside the Cadillac DTS. The plant won Initial Quality Awards from J.D. Power and Associates from 2004 through 2006. GM also lead all other automakers in Strategic Vision's Total Quality Index (TQI)
The Super trim level was introduced at the 2007 New York Auto Show, featuring the 4.6 liter Northstar L37 V8; revised trim; an increase of 17 hp (13 kW) horsepower, and revised front styling and a rear spoiler.
All Lucernes received modest mid-cycle updates in 2008, adding optional blind spot monitoring and lane departure warning system and revised exterior colors. Two new trim levels, CXL Special Edition (with more standard features than regular CXL) and Super, were added for 2008. The 2009 Lucerne received small upgades, including a new base engine, the 3.9 L GM High Value LZ9 V6, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and XM NavTraffic. Flex-fuel technology was made available at no additional cost.
For 2010, the Super's rocker panels, grille, and fog lights were added as standard equipment.
The 2011 Lucerne was largely unchanged. The last was built on June 15, 2011. The second generation LaCrosse replaced it as Buick's flagship sedan for 2012.

- Summary: THE DOORS, SPECIFICALLY REAR DOORS, IN THIS VEHICLE GET STUCK IN AN OPEN OR CLOSED POSITION. IT APPEARS TO BE A DEFECT THAT CAUSES THE DOOR LATCH TO STAY IN THE CLOSED POSITION, TRAPPING CHILDREN OR OTHER PASSENGERS IN THE BACK SEAT, OR PREVENTING THE DOOR FROM CLOSING. FROM INTERNET RESEARCH, THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH THE LUCERNE (NOT JUST 2006) AND THE LACROSSE. FIRST WE HAD THE PASSENGER REAR DOOR GET STUCK CLOSED. AFTER A MONTH OR SO OF UNLOCKING AND LOCKING THE DOORS, IT STARTED WORKING AGAIN RANDOMLY, BUT A FEW MONTHS LATER, BECAME STUCK CLOSED AGAIN WITH NO TRIGGER. WE CONTINUED TO USE THE DRIVER'S SIDE REAR DOOR, BUT ABOUT A YEAR LATER, IT GOT STUCK OPEN. AT FIRST THE DOOR WOULDN'T OPEN FOR MY SON, BUT I PULLED ON THE HANDLE FROM THE OUTSIDE WHILE HE PUSHED FROM THE INSIDE, AND WE GOT IT OPEN. WHEN I TRIED TO CLOSE THE DOOR, IT BOUNCED BACK. THE LATCH IS STUCK IN THE CLOSED POSITION. THE CHILD SAFETY LOCK IS NOT ENGAGED. THE DOORS WILL NOT OPEN FROM INSIDE OR OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE. THE LOCKS FUNCTION NORMALLY MANUALLY, WITH THE KEY FOB, AND BY PRESSING THE DRIVER'S BUTTON. THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND OFF DURING ALL INCIDENCES.

2006 Buick Lucerne recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2006 Buick Lucerne.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2011 Buick Lucerne, 2000-2005 Cadillac DeVille, 2006-2011 Cadillac DTS, 2006-2014 Chevrolet Impala, and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the weight on the key ring and road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, a key knocked out of the run position will cause loss of engine power, power steering, and power braking, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 23, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-458-8006 (Cadillac), and 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet). GM's number for this recall is 14299.

A RECALL WAS IMPLEMENTED IN 2008 TO ADD A FUSE TO THE CONTROL CIRCUIT HARNESS TO ADDRESS THE POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES OF A PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD (PCB) ELECTRICAL SHORT. HOWEVER, THERE HAVE BEEN NEW REPORTS OF THERMAL INCIDENTS ON HWFS MODULES AFTER THIS IMPROVEMENT WAS INSTALLED. THESE INCIDENTS RESULTED FROM A NEW FAILURE MODE ATTRIBUTED TO THE DEVICE'S THERMAL PROTECTION FEATURE. THE SIGNIFICANCE VARIES FROM MINOR DISTORTION TO CONSIDERABLE MELTING OF THE PLASTIC AROUND THE HWFS FLUID CHAMBER.
- Consequence: IT IS POSSIBLE FOR THE HEATED WASHER MODULE TO IGNITE AND A FIRE MAY OCCUR.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL PERMANENTLY DISABLE AND REMOVE THE HEATED WASHER FLUID MODULE. AN UPDATED PAGE FOR THE OWNER MANUAL WILL BE PROVIDED AND INSERTED IN THE OWNER MANUAL TO DOCUMENT THAT THE FEATURE HAS BEEN PERMANENTLY DISABLED AND REMOVED FROM THE VEHICLE. It's great to hear that you've been enjoying your 2006 Lucerne CXS since you bought it with only 20,000 miles on it. With 198,700 miles on it now, it's impressive that it still has sport suspensions that make for a smooth ride even on rough surfaces. It's also great to hear that you recently replaced the shocks and struts at 180,000 miles and the water pump at 190,000 miles. With its impressive fuel efficiency of 23 mpg around town and 31 mpg on the highway, it's no wonder you can drive it for 14 hours straight without getting tired. You even call it a luxury sports car with magna ride and magna steering. It's a shame that Buick stopped making it, but it's clear that you have a great car that you enjoy driving.

After owning my 2005 Century for 4 years, I decided it was time for an upgrade. Unfortunately, the Century was no longer in production, so I had to explore other options. Luckily, I found a fantastic solution at my local Buick/Chevrolet dealer - a one-owner, low mileage 2006 Buick Lucerne CXL V6 with tons of features I had never experienced before. The car was in excellent condition and the luxurious touches immediately won me over. The leather front seats were firm yet soft, with heated cushions and lumbar support. The spacious interior comfortably seats five, with a center console that includes a two-stage storage compartment, a dual cup holder with auto-adjustable cup sizers, and the traction control switch. The leather-wrapped steering wheel has built-in audio and cruise controls, and the rear seating also features leather and a retractable armrest that hides a trunk access door. The backs of the front seats have large map pockets, and the rear seats have a heat-A/C duct for added comfort. The car also boasts a range of luxury features, including full power, dual-zone A/C, and two possible driver memory settings. The instrument panel includes a compass and outside thermometer, and the driver info system provides information on how far you can go with the gas you have left, how much life is left in your oil, and the tire pressure. The sound system is fantastic, with AM/FM/CD, auxiliary MP3 jack, and Sirius XM radio, backed by 9 Harman Kardon speakers. The car also includes On Star emergency service (extra cost subscription required, like the XM radio). While there is no back-up camera, the innovative 'spider sense' system built into the rear bumper sounds an alarm and flashes lights visible in the rearview mirror when you get close to something behind you. The sun/moonroof provides ample headroom, and the trunk is fairly large, controlled with the remote key fob (there is no key lock for the trunk), opening to its maximum height with just a click.Door locks and an alarm can be conveniently controlled using the remote fob. The Lucerne is a pleasant surprise in terms of powertrain. Its smooth 4-speed automatic coupled with a frisky 3.8L V6 delivering 197 HP makes it very responsive while achieving an impressive 19 MPG city and 28 HWAY. For those who require more power, there is an optional V8 available, but I find the V6 to be more than adequate for the task. On the road, I have achieved 29 MPG, which is very good for a full-size luxury car that is actually a close mirror image to a Cadillac. People looking for top-of-the-line luxury of a Cadillac will be pleased to know that this Lucerne is a virtual Caddy clone with a lower price in a class that includes Lexus, Lincoln, and the Chrysler 300. UPDATE 10/17/2023---Today, more than a year and a half later, this car still runs great, with a nimble, soft ride that still gives me around 29 MPG on the highway. People riding with me still remark on how luxurious and comfortable it is. Several of my friends now say they'll consider a Buick over Lexus, Lincoln, or Chrysler. This is why they used to ask,

I love my Lucerne CXS! It's such a great ride for passengers. The Lucerne never fails to provide a comfortable and pleasing ride, day after day. Even when I don't drive it every day, I miss my car, affectionately named Sophie, and she misses me too! : ) I must admit, this unexpected love affair with my car has been a pleasant surprise. As a former Chrysler mini-van Mom of 14 years, I was initially hesitant about my husband's strong encouragement to purchase the Lucerne CXS. However, he reminded me of my delight when sitting in one at the Detroit & Grand Rapids Auto Shows. Now, I'm constantly receiving favorable comments and inquiries from friends and complete strangers of all ages and genders.

I've owned several Buicks, including the Park Avenue Ultras (my last car was a 2000 model), and I'm thrilled with its performance. The car is incredibly agile and handles like a dream, much like a German car. The Northstar engine is super responsive and emits a NASCAR-like growl under acceleration. The seats are comfortable, and the car has many great new features, such as heated windshield washers. At cruising speed, road noise is well isolated. The only downside to this car is its fuel economy, which I've averaged about 19 mpg so far, compared to an average of 22.5 with the supercharged Ultra. Overall, I'm very happy with my Buick!

Rides like a dream! It's so quiet and comfortable. This luxury car is a great value compared to our past Cadillacs or Lexus.

I recently purchased a car from the showroom without test driving it first, which turned out to be a big mistake. Within two weeks, I noticed a vibration problem and took it back to the dealership. They aligned it and then changed the engine mounts during my second visit. However, the problem persisted and I was told to put 800 miles on it before returning. During my third visit, the service manager informed me that the car was to spec and that the vibration was normal. Although I was disappointed, the service manager was very friendly and understanding throughout the process. At my request, the wheels were road forced balanced during my fourth visit, which helped to correct the issue to some extent. However, the car still vibrates. During my fifth visit, all the oil was drained and the car had to be towed. Unfortunately, during my sixth visit, the battery stopped charging and the car is no longer safe to drive over 45mph. Despite these issues, I appreciate the dealership's efforts to resolve the problem and their friendly service throughout the process.

Since I bought this car, I've had to have two of the four doors fixed. One wouldn't open, and the other had the handle come off. The power window regulator went out, the motor mounts broke, and now the transmission is going out. Additionally, the plastic around the front seats has all broken. It's been a frustrating experience, and I wouldn't recommend this car to anyone.

The plastic around the driver's seat has cracked off, and the wheels appear to have peeling aluminum film. Despite these issues, I still believe Buicks to be well-made cars. Although there is some brake noise and the power steering fluid needs to be monitored, there are no leaks. Overall, this is a good car. It is worth noting that some older models may have been better made, but this is a common trend in many products these days.

This car has a proven engine and is absolutely smooth and quiet. It gets 30+ MPG if driven 55-60 MPH, which is phenomenal for its tank size. Additionally, it gets 26 MPG with an 80/20 mix of highway and city driving, and can reach speeds up to 80 MPH. Although it has horrendous blind spots, it is a great road car and powerful on the highway. However, it is crummy to drive in the city. The seats are awful and extremely sore after driving, and the interior materials are very cheap. The seat fabric is also quite nasty. The ergonomics are bad and there is no telescopic steering wheel. The passenger seat rattles and the driver seat plastic has cracked off. Overall, I would not buy this car again due to its quirks. However, it may still be a good fit for some drivers.

I have owned three Park Avenues in the past 12 years and was eagerly anticipating the Lucerne. However, I have experienced a persistent vibration that has not been resolved despite two attempts to balance the wheels. Additionally, the car lacks a trunk key entry and the gas filler flap opens too easily, which could lead to fuel theft. The recessed instrument panel dials are difficult to read in daylight and the steering is overly stiff. The ride quality is harsh and the noise level is comparable to my Camry or Miata. Unfortunately, the engineers have failed to maintain the traditional smooth ride associated with Buick. Overall, I am extremely disappointed with this car and am considering selling it as soon as possible.
