2010 Buick Lucerne problems

buick logo

The Buick Lucerne is a full-size car manufactured by General Motors from 2005 to 2011. Named for the city of Lucerne, Switzerland, it served as Buick's top-of-the-line sedan until it was replaced by the second generation Buick LaCrosse.

History

The Lucerne replaced the full-size LeSabre and the Park Avenue in the Buick range, and used a revised G platform, nonetheless referred to by GM as the H platform.

The Lucerne was introduced with the standard 3.8 liter Buick V6 (also known as the GM 3800 engine) or optional 4.6 liter Cadillac Northstar LD8 V8 as well as optional active suspension, marketed as Magnetic Ride Control. For 2005, all General Motors vehicles equipped with the 3.8 L V6 become the first SULEV-compliant vehicles.

The Lucerne featured a row of faux exhaust vents, marketed as "Ventiports," on the front fenders, corresponding to the number of cylinders in the engine — three on each side for the V6 or four for the V8. The CXL trim package added numerous premium features.

The Lucerne was manufactured at GM's Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly Plant alongside the Cadillac DTS. The plant won Initial Quality Awards from J.D. Power and Associates from 2004 through 2006. GM also lead all other automakers in Strategic Vision's Total Quality Index (TQI)

The Super trim level was introduced at the 2007 New York Auto Show, featuring the 4.6 liter Northstar L37 V8; revised trim; an increase of 17 hp (13 kW) horsepower, and revised front styling and a rear spoiler.

All Lucernes received modest mid-cycle updates in 2008, adding optional blind spot monitoring and lane departure warning system and revised exterior colors. Two new trim levels, CXL Special Edition (with more standard features than regular CXL) and Super, were added for 2008. The 2009 Lucerne received small upgades, including a new base engine, the 3.9 L GM High Value LZ9 V6, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and XM NavTraffic. Flex-fuel technology was made available at no additional cost.

For 2010, the Super's rocker panels, grille, and fog lights were added as standard equipment.

The 2011 Lucerne was largely unchanged. The last was built on June 15, 2011. The second generation LaCrosse replaced it as Buick's flagship sedan for 2012.

Common 2010 Buick Lucerne problems

The Buick Lucerne, a full-size luxury car produced between 2006 and 2011, has faced a number of common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues include electrical problems, oil leaks, fuel pump failure, and power steering assist faults.

Electrical problems are among the most frequently reported issues across various model years of the Buick Lucerne. The 2007 model year is particularly affected, with electrical problems being the worst category for complaints.

Oil leaks are another common issue, particularly in the 2011 Buick Lucerne. These leaks usually develop from the front crankshaft seal and can cause the low oil indicator light to turn on. Some owners have reported this problem as early as 11,500 miles. Replacing the front crankshaft seal typically fixes the issue, but there have been no recalls issued to address such oil leaks.

Fuel pump failure is a common problem in several model years of the Buick Lucerne. In the 2008 model year, complaints describe overheating or stalling caused by a faulty fuel pump and relay. This problem can cause the car to stop without warning, and some owners have reported their fuel pump relay and fuse box being fried. Replacing the fuel pump and relay usually resolves this issue, but there have been no recalls to address fuel pump failure in the Lucerne.

Power steering assist faults are also a common issue in the Buick Lucerne. The power steering assist system helps drivers turn the steering wheel more easily, and problems with this system can make steering more difficult. The Lucerne's power steering assist system can experience issues due to a faulty power steering pump or leaks in the power steering system. These problems can lead to a loss of power steering assist, making the vehicle harder to steer, especially at low speeds.

In summary, the Buick Lucerne has faced a number of common problems, including electrical issues, oil leaks, fuel pump failure, and power steering assist faults. While the Lucerne is generally considered a dependable full-size luxury car, these issues can affect its reliability and overall driving experience. It is important for potential buyers to be aware of these common problems and consider them when choosing a model year and specific vehicle.

  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I purchased the car from Buick Spec dealership in Prosser WA on Aug. 2, 2021. The car was sold to me with rocket panel damaged, the rear brakes- rotors needed replaced and one side brake completely gone..the pins frozen. The cars transmission fluid dark dirty..low on oil..no coolant or wiper fluid at purchase. They brought car to me during covid. The door didn't shut properly I assumed the rubber around door needed replaced and I planned to have it repaired until I seen a bulge under my driver's side door.took it in and was told by 2 certified auto body places the rocker panel was damaged. My Car started to shimmy when stopping and now the prior recall of fuse relay box burning caused my car to be currently sitting. I don't understand how they could sell me a car like this and this is my complaints. I want my repairs done and money reimbursed I've already paid for. The dealership said because I purchased car AS IS. they aren't responsible to fix. I've owned the car a little over 3 months. This seems unfair and I want answers!!!

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SEATS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-06-10
  • VIN: 1G4HC5EM3AU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SEATS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: INITIAL INCIDENT HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING ON A STREET. DOOR LOCKS POWER CYCLED LOCK/UNLOCK AND THEN THE CAR WOULD CUT OFF. NO WARNING, NO TIME TO MOVE TO OUT OF TRAFFIC OR TURN ON HAZZARD. I USE THIS VEHICLE TO COMMUTE TO AND FROM WORK/CHILDCARE ETC. I ALSO TRAVEL OF THE FREEWAY ALOT. THAT WAS THE PREVIOUS INCIDENT. THE MOST RECENT INCIDENT OCCURRED WHEN THE CAR WOULD NOT TURN OVER AND UPON DOING RESEARCH WE FOUND THAT IT MAY BE RELATED TO. RELAY ISSUE DUE TO THE FUZE BOX BEING UNDERNEATH THE REAR SEAT. GM CLAIMS THAT BECAUSE A BRACKET USED TO FASTEN THE SEAT IN PLACE INTERFERES WITH THE FUZE BOX AND PRESSES DOWN ON THE FUZE PUMP RELAY AND CAUSES IT TO BURN OUT. AFTER SWITCHING OUT THE RELAYS WITH THE SUGGESTED LOWER PROFILE RELAY, THE CAR DROVE FOR A FEW HOURS AND THEN WHEN WE PARKED WE COULDN'T REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION. UPON LIFTING THE BACK SEAT TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY WE SMELLED AND HEARD THE FUEL PUMP RELAY BURNING AND SIZZLING. SINCE THE CAR WAS "SERVICED" BY A BUICK DEALER IN JUNE I'M ASSUMING THAT IT WASN'T ACTUALLY SERVICED THE RELAY WAS JUST REPLACED AND MAYBE A FEW OTHER TWEAKS HERE AND THERE BUT THE ISSUE WAS NOT RESOLVED. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE RELIABILITY OF THIS CAR. I HAVE CHILDREN THAT RIDE IN THE BACK SEAT. I AM FEARFUL THAT THE CAR WILL CATCH FIRE OR SPARK.

THIS IS A COSTLY DEADLY DESIGN FLAW AND SHOULD BE RECALLED. LUCKY WE FIXED IT IN TIME. I HAVE BABIES THAT SIT IN MY BACK SEAT AND IT'S SCARY TO THINK THAT IT COULD CATCH ON FIRE WITH THEM SITTING THERE.

  • VIN: 1G4HD5EM3AU
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: CAR WOULD NOT START WHILE OUT OF TOWN. HAD CAR TOWED TO MECHANIC I TRUSTED (NOT A CERTIFIED BUICK DEALER). REPLACED FUEL PUMP BUT AFTER CAR WAS RUNNING A FEW MINUTES FUSE BOX OVERHEATED AND CAUSED FUEL RELAY TO FAIL. HE CALLED BUICK AND WAS TOLD HOW TO FIX. HE WAS ALSO TOLD THAT IN ORDER FOR FUSE BOX AND RELAY TO BE REIMBURSED BUICK DEALER NEEDED TO SUBMIT CLAIM. SUBMITTED CLAIM AND GOT REIMBURSED FOR FUSE BOX AND RELAY BUT NOT PUMP. AFTER 3-4 MONTHS OF FIGHTING BUICK TO GET FUEL PUMP REIMBURSED, THE DENIED APPEAL. WAS TOLD BY AGENT OF BUICK THAT FUEL PUMP WAS WARRANTED TO 120,000 MILES BUT ONLY IF TAKEN TO BUICK DEALER. I DON'T TRUST THE BUICK DEALERSHIP IN THE TOWN I WAS IN WHEN THE CAR WOULDN'T START, WHICH IS WHY I TOOK TO MECHANIC I TRUSTED. COMMUNICATION WITH BUICK HAS BEEN HORRIBLE...THEY DON'T EVEN BOTHER TO RESPOND UNLESS YOU GET CONTACTING THEM. WE HAVE A 2006 BUICK LUCERNE WITH 205,000 MILES AND IT STILL HAS ORIGINAL FUEL PUMP. CAR COMPLAINTS.COM HAS MANY INSTANCES OF THIS PROBLEM IN 2009 AND 2010 LUCERNE BUT BUICK WON'T STAND BEHIND THEM!

AFTER REMOVING BACK PASSENGER SEAT BOTTOM CUSHION, CHECKED INSIDE REAR FUSE BOX AND FOUND THAT FUEL PUMP RELAY HAD SHORTED AND MELTED THE RELAY AND DAMAGED ADJACENT FUSES WITH BURN MARKS ACROSS SURFACE OF FUSE BOX. WAITING FOR VEHICLE TO BE TOWED TO MECHANIC FOR FUSE BOX REPLACEMENT AND TO DIAGNOSE OTHER POTENTIAL DAMAGE CAUSED BY RELAY FAILURE. MILEAGE AT TIME OF FAILURE WAS 60,000. ACCORDING TO THE BULLETIN, BRACKET ON BOTTOM OF SEAT CUSHION PUSHES AGAINST THE FUSE BOX LID, WHICH PUSHES AGAINST THE FUEL PUMP RELAY CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE RELAY AND FUSE BOX. WHY HAS THERE BEEN NO RECALL TO REPAIR THIS DANGEROUS DESIGN FLAW?

2010 Buick Lucerne recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2010 Buick Lucerne.

2014-06-23
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2011 Buick Lucerne, 2000-2005 Cadillac DeVille, 2006-2011 Cadillac DTS, 2006-2014 Chevrolet Impala, and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the weight on the key ring and road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, a key knocked out of the run position will cause loss of engine power, power steering, and power braking, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 23, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-458-8006 (Cadillac), and 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet). GM's number for this recall is 14299.

  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:12V/24V/48V BATTERY:CABLES
  • Summary: GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2010-2011 DTS AND BUICK LUCERNE VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH V8 ENGINES. THE STARTER OR ALTERNATOR CABLE IS IN CONTACT WITH THE POWER STEERING RETURN LINE. IF EITHER THE STARTER OR ALTERNATOR CABLE IS CONTACTING THE POWER STEERING RETURN LINE, THE CABLE COULD WEAR THROUGH THE LINE, CAUSING A POWER STEERING FLUID LEAK.
  • Consequence: A POWER STEERING LEAK COULD RESULT IN A LOSS OF POWER STEERING, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH, AND/OR THE LEAK ONTO HOT ENGINE PARTS COULD CAUSE AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL SECURE AND IF NECESSARY REROUTE THE LINES TO PREVENT CONTACT. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 19, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339, BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080 AND AT THE OWNER CENTER AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

Negative 2010 Buick Lucerne car reviews

  1. Jamaal Quigley 2024-09-14

Hi there! I noticed that my new Buick gets about 3 mpg less than my 1993 La Sabre. I also noticed that the acceleration at 60 mph is quite poor, especially considering that the typical highway speed is between 65 and 70 mph.

  2. Monty Tremblay 2024-09-06

I no longer own a car.

  3. Michale Marquardt 2024-07-09

I recently purchased a 2010 Lucern and unfortunately, after just 4 days, I started experiencing some issues with the front end. It was making some strange noises that sounded like the traction bars or suspension. After doing some research, I'm feeling a bit disappointed with my purchase and wish I had gone with the STS or DTS Caddy instead. I'll be keeping track of everything in case this car turns out to be a lemon. Interestingly, my Aunt and Uncle also had some complaints about their 2007 Lucern. I used to think they were just being picky, but now I understand where they were coming from. It seems like GM still has some quality issues to work out. Maybe I should have gone with a Malibu instead!

  4. Karl Koch 2024-06-07

The steering weight on my 2010 Buick CXL v6 is quite heavy and lacks power steering, making it difficult to turn at any speed. This can make driving less enjoyable and not as smooth as one would expect from a Buick. However, at higher speeds, there is a little steering play which makes it easier to handle. Overall, it may not be the most luxurious or premium driving experience, but it still has its merits.

My new Lucerne is not meeting my expectations. Despite the ethanol in the gas affecting the mileage, I am only getting 22.3 mpg on a long trip, which is disappointing compared to my previous car. I value a smooth ride and unfortunately, this car does not provide that. As a consumer, I expect more from GM and I hope they improve their products in the future.

I'm glad to hear that you've been enjoying your Lucerne! From what you've said, it sounds like you haven't experienced any noise issues with your car. I personally prefer column shifts and have found them to be quite comfortable with my long legs. I'm curious, have you heard any feedback from Rick regarding his models with console shifts?

I've been driving my car for two years and have really enjoyed it, but I've encountered a problem. Gravel tends to get stuck behind the bumper, and if it's hit by another car, it can create a lump on the bumper. Unfortunately, I had to spend over $500.00 to get it fixed, and when I approached the dealer, they referred to it as a highway hazard. I think it would be great if they could find a way to prevent gravel from getting behind the bumper. I've been driving Buicks for most of my life, but I'm not sure if I'll continue if they're not suitable for driving on roads other than paved highways.

My wife and I visited a local car lot and test drove around 4-5 vehicles before trying out my Lucerne. Although my wife had her heart set on a newer Malibu, our car dealer suggested we give the Lucerne a try. As soon as I sat down and wrapped my hands around the steering wheel, I knew this was the car for me. I had never considered owning a Buick before, but I am so happy that I chose this car - it has everything! The ride is incredibly smooth, with great acceleration. The heated seats, steering wheel, mirrors, and window washer have all come in handy while living in NE Ohio. I purchased my car on 1/4/22 with only 94,000 miles on it and plan to keep it for as long as possible. I'm looking forward to driving it for 3-500,000 miles! By the way, I named her Lucy - short for Lucerne, of course!

I absolutely love my 2010 Lucerne CXL V6! The air suspension makes a huge difference in ride quality and the seats are incredibly comfortable. I especially appreciate being able to push the seat belt clip down under the seat, which makes it feel like a recliner on wheels. The steering wheel is easy to turn and the transmission shifts quickly and accurately. The engine has a ton of low-end torque, which allows it to accelerate up to cruising speed at an impressive 1200 RPMs. It's very fuel efficient on the highway if you accelerate slowly and drive it right. The radio has high quality speakers and there's even an aux port. The cruise control is easy to use and the heated steering wheel is a nice touch. The car has a stylish look, with fancy portholes and stylish interior gauges. Overall, it's just a super satisfying car to drive!

Overall, I really like the Lucerne. This is actually my second one, and before the Lucerne, I drove the LeSabre. Before switching to Buicks, I had been driving Pontiacs for 25 years. I truly believe that the Lucerne offers great value for the money.
