2011 Buick Lucerne problems
The Buick Lucerne is a full-size car manufactured by General Motors from 2005 to 2011. Named for the city of Lucerne, Switzerland, it served as Buick's top-of-the-line sedan until it was replaced by the second generation Buick LaCrosse.
History
The Lucerne replaced the full-size LeSabre and the Park Avenue in the Buick range, and used a revised G platform, nonetheless referred to by GM as the H platform.
The Lucerne was introduced with the standard 3.8 liter Buick V6 (also known as the GM 3800 engine) or optional 4.6 liter Cadillac Northstar LD8 V8 as well as optional active suspension, marketed as Magnetic Ride Control. For 2005, all General Motors vehicles equipped with the 3.8 L V6 become the first SULEV-compliant vehicles.
The Lucerne featured a row of faux exhaust vents, marketed as "Ventiports," on the front fenders, corresponding to the number of cylinders in the engine — three on each side for the V6 or four for the V8. The CXL trim package added numerous premium features.
The Lucerne was manufactured at GM's Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly Plant alongside the Cadillac DTS. The plant won Initial Quality Awards from J.D. Power and Associates from 2004 through 2006. GM also lead all other automakers in Strategic Vision's Total Quality Index (TQI)
The Super trim level was introduced at the 2007 New York Auto Show, featuring the 4.6 liter Northstar L37 V8; revised trim; an increase of 17 hp (13 kW) horsepower, and revised front styling and a rear spoiler.
All Lucernes received modest mid-cycle updates in 2008, adding optional blind spot monitoring and lane departure warning system and revised exterior colors. Two new trim levels, CXL Special Edition (with more standard features than regular CXL) and Super, were added for 2008. The 2009 Lucerne received small upgades, including a new base engine, the 3.9 L GM High Value LZ9 V6, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and XM NavTraffic. Flex-fuel technology was made available at no additional cost.
For 2010, the Super's rocker panels, grille, and fog lights were added as standard equipment.
The 2011 Lucerne was largely unchanged. The last was built on June 15, 2011. The second generation LaCrosse replaced it as Buick's flagship sedan for 2012.

Common 2011 Buick Lucerne problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Buick Lucerne 2011, common problems with this car include:
- Oil Leaks: Owners reported oil leaks developing from the front crankshaft seal, leading to oil leaking outside of the pan and on the bottom of the engine. In some cases, this issue triggered the low oil indicator light to turn on, with reports of occurrences as early as 11,500 miles. Replacing the front crankshaft seal typically resolved this problem.
- Fuse Block Issues: Many owners experienced problems with the fuse blocks, resulting in stuttering, stalling, and a burning stench from the car. The fuel pump relay overheated and melted in the fuse box, causing sudden stalls without warning. Replacing the melted fuse block with a new one usually fixed this issue.
- Electrical System Malfunctions: Complaints included suddenly losing power while driving, unexpected burglar alarm activation, strange sounds from the fuel pump, and poorly illuminated instrument control panels. Fuel pump failure was a significant issue, leading to overheating or stalling due to a faulty fuel pump and relay. Replacing the fuel pump and relay was the typical solution for this problem.
These problems highlight some of the key issues reported by owners of the Buick Lucerne 2011, emphasizing the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any signs of these issues to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-21
- VIN: 1G4HA5EM3BU
- Components: SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Several malfunction indicator lights in dash appeared suddenly. Car would not start after shutting off. Finally started and drove to repair shop. Diagnosed as faulty ride height sensor. Shop searched for part at several dealers and online and found the part was discontinued in 2021. I contacted Buick and was offered $1500 off on a new GM car. I have not received any suggestions on how to repair the car or remove malfunction indicator lights which I specifically asked for. The repair shop is waiting for me to find the part and I have not been able to find one. Dealers have no answer and neither does Buick. The repair shop says it will start if sensor is unplugged but suspension will not work and dash will still have malfunction indicator lights. It is my opinion to operate under these conditions, it would definitely be hazardous.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-13
- VIN: 1G4HJ5EM9BU

- Summary: The contact owns a 2011 Buick Lucerne. The contact stated that after several attempts the vehicle failed to start-up without warning. Upon investigation, the contact linked the failure to the circuit board which was in the rear back seat. The contact stated that the rear seat latches had rubbed against the circuit box, causing the circuit to overheat. The circuit board was replaced. The contact then stated that upon entering his vehicle while in a parking lot, blueish colored smoke was coming from the vehicle. The contact removed the back seat and saw that the circuit board had started melting. The Police were first called to the scene and the Fire Department then arrived and was able to extinguish the smoke before the circuit board caught on fire. Neither a Police report nor a Fire report was filed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it remained. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and a case was filed. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was 198,000.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-07-19
- VIN: 1G4HC5EM8BU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: BRAKE LINE EXPERIENCED A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE RESULTING IN A RAPID LOSS OF ALL BRAKE FLUID AND COMPLETE LOSS OF BRAKES WHILE ON A CITY STREET. CAR WAS TOWED TO THE REPAIR SHOP WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT ALL BRAKE LINES WERE SEVERELY RUSTED FROM THE OUTSIDE AND ONE HAD FAILED. THIS CAR WAS ALWAYS GARAGE KEPT AND VERY INFREQUENTLY DRIVEN ON SALTED STREETS. ALL BRAKE HAD TO BE REPLACED. I THINK IT IS UNREASONABLE THAT BRAKE LINES SHOULD RUST OUT AND CAUSE SUCH A FAILURE. SOMEONE COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. A PERSON DOES NOT THINK OF THEIR BRAKE LINES AS REQUIRING CONSTANT INSPECTION, LIKE ONE MIGHT KEEP AN EYE ON THE TREAD ON THEIR TIRES.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-01-09
- VIN: 1G4HC5EM1BU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

CHECKED THE FUSE BOX AND IT HAD BLEW OUT A COUPLE OF FUSES SO WE CHANGED THEM. 3DAYS LATER IT DID THE SAME THING WE CHANGED THE FUSES AGAIN AND ONCE AGAIN THE BLEW NOW WHEN WE CHANGED THEM IT WON'T START AT ALL. I HAD TO KEEP CHANGING THE FUEL PUMP FUSE AND A DEALER SAID IT WAS BECAUSE OF THE METAL OF THE SEAT TOUCHING THE BOX .
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-06-23
- VIN: 1G4HC5EM7BU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: CAR WAS STATIONARY, AND ATTEMPTED TO START. ENGINE WAS NOT GETTING GAS. DEALER IDENTIFIED REAR FUSE BOX/FUEL PUMP RELAY WAS SHORTED OUT. HE STATED THIS COULD HAPPEN AT ANY TIME- STATIONARY OR GOING HIGHWAY SPEEDS. SHORT IN FUSE BOX COULD RESULT IN FIRE. SHORT WAS PROBABLY CAUSED BY REAR SEAT BRACKET RUBBING ON FUSE BOX, AS EVIDENCED BY MARKINGS ON FUSE BOX. THERE ARE MANY SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ON THIS SAME ISSUE ON INTERNET SITES. WHY HAS THIS NOT BEEN INVESTIGATED?
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-04-24
- VIN: 1G4HA5EM4BU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: A MANUFACTURER DEFECT EXISTS IN THE AREA OF THE REAR FUSE BOX LOCATED UNDER THE REAR SEAT ON THE LEFT SIDE. THE SEAT BRACKET APPLIES PRESSURE TO THE FUSE BOX COVER DEFLECTING IT FROM ITS STANDARD POSITION. THIS DEFLECTION PUTS LATERAL PRESSURE ON THE FUEL PUMP RELAY. THIS LATERAL FORCE CAUSE AN WEAKED CONTACT BETWEEN THE RELAY AND THE FUSE BOX CONNECTORS. INCREASED ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE CAUSES THE RELAY TO OVERHEAT AND MELT ITS BASE AND FUSE BOX. THE HEAT IS INTENSE ENOUGH TO CASE THE CONTACT PINS OF THE RELAY, AND SOCKET OF THE FUSE BOX AND SOFTENS THE METAL FURTHER DEGRADING THE CONTINUITY AND INCREASING RESISTANCE. THIS MANDATES A REPLACEMENT OF THE FUSE BOX SINCE SIMPLY REPLACING THE RELAY AFTER THE HEAT DAMAGE MAY NOT BE SUFFICIENT TO REMEDY THE DEFECT. A MANUFACTURER TSB EXHISTS HOWEVER, THIS COMPONENT IS MORE LIKELY TO FAIL ON A LONGER HIGH SPEED DRIVE. IF IT FAILS AT SPEED, VEHICLE CONTROL ISSUES MAY ARISE AMONG WITH DRIVER PANIC WHEN THE ENGINE STALLS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-03-28
- VIN: 1G4HC5EM8BU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: ON MARCH 28TH, 2018 MY VEHICLE A 2011 BUICK LUCERNE WITH 162,554 MILES ON IT, WOULD NOT RESTART AFTER MAKING A TWENTY-MILE TRIP TO TAKE MY GRANDCHILDREN TO SCHOOL. I PARKED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD IN FRONT OF MY MOTHER'S HOUSE TO VISIT, AND UPON MY ATTEMPT TO LEAVE, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS, STRANGE NOISES, OR SMELLS THAT WOULD LEAD ME TO BELIEVE THE FUSE BOX FAILURE, LEADING TO THE BOX MELTING. WHEN A BATTERY GOES BAD, IT SMELLS LIKE SPOILED EGGS, HOWEVER IN THE CASE OF MY VEHICLES FUSE BOX MELTING THERE WAS NO TOXIC SMELL(S), THAT IS A GOOD THING SINCE NO PASSENGERS SUFFERED FROM MELTING PLASTIC FUMES, I GUESS. I TOOK MY 2011 BUICK LUCERNE TO THE DEALER'S SHIP BECAUSE MY VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. UPON THE TECH DIAGNOSES THE FUSE RELAY HAD MELTED, AND THIS WAS ONE REASON THE FUEL PUMP WAS NOT RECEIVING POWER TO SEND FUEL TO THE ENGINE. MY NEXT CONCERN IS THE PLACEMENT OF THESE COMPONENTS IN THE VEHICLE, THEY ARE LOCATED UNDER THE REAR PASSENGER SEATS. IF THE VOLTAGE, FUSE BOX MELTS AGAIN SOON, THE POSSIBILITY OF AN INTERNAL FIRE IS HIGHLY POSSIBLE AND THUS THE LOSS OF LIVES IS LIKELY. AFTER CONDUCTING MY OWN ONLINE SEARCH, THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT HAS BEEN OVERLOOKED IN THE PAST OR MINIMIZED IN ORDER OF IMPORTANCE FOR THE CONSUMERS SAFETY CONCERNS REPORTED AT VARIOUS DEALERSHIPS. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).' *PM
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SEATS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-08-29
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 1G4HC5EM1BU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SEATS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: THE BUICK LUCERNE 2011 WE OWN HAD THE BATTERY EXPLODE UPON TURNING THE KEY. I AM WIFE/CAREGIVER TO 100% DISABLED VETERAN AND HIS SERVICE DOG. NORMALLY I WOULD HAVE PUT THEM BOTH IN THE CAR BEFORE TURNING THE KEY BUT LUCKILY ON THIS DAY I DID NOT OR WE ALL WOULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. THE CAR WAS IN THE DRIVEWAY WHEN THIS HAPPENED. WE IMMEDIATELY HAD CAR TOWED TO MECHANIC AFTER THE ACID AND SMOKE IN CAR HAD CLEARED. IT WAS DEEMED THAT BATTERY EXPLODED AS IT IS UNDER THE REAR SEAT AND WE COULD NOT SEE IT UNTIL THE SEAT WAS OUT. A NEW BATTERY WAS PUT IN BUT THE RESIDUAL ACID BURNING AND MELTING SEAT HAD ME TAKE IT BACK FOR FURTHER REPAIR. THE INSURANCE COMPANY FINALLY CONCEDED TO REPLACE THE 2ND BATTERY AND PUT NEW FOAM IN BACK SEAT AS THE 1ST NEW ONE WAS ALREADY CORRODING AFTER 2 WEEKS. IT WAS TOLD TO ME THAT THE INSURANCE COMPANY WAS GOING TO TOTAL THE CAR AS IT IS A LIFE THREATENING FIRE HAZARD BUT THEY CHANGED THEIR MIND AND HAD US PAY ABOUT $1000 OUT OF POCKET FOR NEW ALTERNATOR AS THEY CLAIM IT WAS THE CAUSE OF THE EXPLOSION. WE WERE TOLD IT WOULD HAPPEN AGAIN OR CAUSE A FIRE AS THE ENTIRE WIRING UNDER THE SEATS FROM THE ALTERNATOR IS DEFECTIVE. IT IS TERRIFYING TO BE IN THIS (OUR ONLY VECHICLE FOR TRANSPORT TO VA HOSPITAL TREATMENTS) CAR DAILY. WE WAIT ANOTHER EXPLOSION OR FIRE ANY MINUTE. THE DEALERSHIP REFUSED TO EXAMINE THE CAR FOR SAFETY AS THEY MUST BE EQUALLY AFRAID OR UNABLE TO ASSURE IT IS SAFE. PLEASE ADVISE OTHERS OF THIS LIFE THREATENING FIRE HAZARD BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED. I PRAY IT WONT BE US, OR CAUSE AN ACCIDENT TO HARM OTHERS. WE STILL OWE $$ ON THIS CAR AS WE BOUGHT IT USED 2 YEARS AGO AND THE DEALER WILL NOT ASSIST IN HELPING US GET ENOUGH TO PAY THE LOAN BUT GLADLY TOOK MANY THOUSANDS OVER VALUE FROM US. PLEASE MAKE THIS PUBLIC TO SAVE LIVES.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-12-03
- VIN: 1G4HC5EM0BU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY AND STOPPED AT A STOP SIGN--WHEN I ACCELERATED TO CONTINUE DRIVING THE CAR SHIFTED INTO THE GEAR FOR DRIVING IN THE SNOW. THE GEAR SHIFT STILL WAS IN DRIVE. IN THE SNOW DRIVE GEAR YOU GET A BUMPY RIDE AND CAN ONLY GO 30 MPH. I HAD ON STAR AT THAT TIME AND THEY TOLD ME TO TURN THE IGNITION OFF AND IT WOULD GET ME OUT OF THAT GEAR. I DID THAT TWICE AND IT WORKED. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO A DEALER IN FLORIDA AND THEY SAID IT WAS CAUSED BY A FAULTY FUSE--WHICH THEY REPLACED. THIS SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME AGAIN THIS WEEK; I NOW HAVE 34,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. TURNING THE CAR OFF ALSO WORKED. I WILL BRING THE CAR INTO BUICK TO HAVE IT CHECKED. MY CONCERN IS THAT THE CAR WILL SLIP INTO THE SLOW GEAR WHILE I'M DRIVING. HAS ANYONE ELSE REPORTED THIS PROBLEM. *TR
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-10-16
- VIN: 1G4HJ5EMXBU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: BACKGROUND - I JUST WENT THROUGH THE IGNITION RECALL ON MY 2007 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE IGNITION SWITCH WAS REPLACED AND I AM COMFORTABLE DRIVING THE CAR NOW. THEN I RECEIVED RECALL 14299 ON MY 2011 BUICK LUCERNE (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID 14V355) INVOLVING A SIMILAR IGNITION ISSUE. IT ALSO MENTIONED THE WEIGHT ISSUE OF ITEMS HANGING ON THE KEY CAUSING LOSS OF ENGINE POWER, BRAKING, ETC. THE RECALL PROVIDED THE SAME INTERIM INSTRUCTIONS AS THE COBALT, REMOVE EVERYTHING FROM THE KEY INCLUDING THE FOB. I TOOK MY BUICK LUCERNE IN FOR THE RECALL AND FOUND OUT ALL IT INVOLVED WAS ADDING TWO KEY RINGS AND AN INSERT IN THE KEY. AFTER THE RECALL IS PERFORMED IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE SAFE TO ADD PREVIOUSLY REMOVED ITEMS BACK ON YOUR KEY RING. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW ADDING TWO KEY RINGS AND AN INSERT CAN CORRECT A WEIGHT ISSUE ON THE KEY. I HAVEN'T HAD THE RECALL PERFORMED YET BECAUSE I DIDN'T HAVE BOTH KEYS WITH ME WHEN I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP. I AM TRYING TO UNDERSTAND IF I AM WASTING MY TIME DRIVING 40 MILES FOR WHAT APPEARS TO BE A GENERAL MOTORS SHAM. HAS THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION EVALUATED AND APPROVED THIS FIX? *TR
2011 Buick Lucerne recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2011 Buick Lucerne.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2011 Buick Lucerne, 2000-2005 Cadillac DeVille, 2006-2011 Cadillac DTS, 2006-2014 Chevrolet Impala, and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the weight on the key ring and road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, a key knocked out of the run position will cause loss of engine power, power steering, and power braking, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 23, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-458-8006 (Cadillac), and 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet). GM's number for this recall is 14299.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:12V/24V/48V BATTERY:CABLES
- Summary: GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2010-2011 DTS AND BUICK LUCERNE VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH V8 ENGINES. THE STARTER OR ALTERNATOR CABLE IS IN CONTACT WITH THE POWER STEERING RETURN LINE. The wind noise (whistle) from the driver's window and the engine noise caused by the fuel injectors have been identified by the dealer. Although the outside mirror design may contribute to the wind noise, it is not the root cause. Despite these issues, I still love the car and am confident that they can be resolved with the right expertise and attention.

Your vehicle gets essentially the same mileage as a v6 Honda Accord, and is priced similarly. It is also comparable to the Lexus, with great leather and faux wood interior, sunroof, audio, and onstar. Additionally, there is plenty of room for four adults and even golf bags in the trunk!

Overall, I really like the Lucerne. This is actually my second one, and before the Lucerne, I drove the LeSabre. Before switching to Buicks, I had been driving Pontiacs for 25 years. I truly believe that the Lucerne offers great value for the money.

Everything was great, but a backup camera was missing.

I'm glad to hear that you've been enjoying your Lucerne! From what you've said, it sounds like you haven't experienced any noise issues with your car. I personally prefer column shifts and have found them to be quite comfortable with my long legs. I'm curious, have you heard any feedback from Rick regarding his models with console shifts?

I recently purchased a 2010 Lucern and unfortunately, after just 4 days, I started experiencing some issues with the front end. It was making some strange noises that sounded like the traction bars or suspension. After doing some research, I'm feeling a bit disappointed with my purchase and wish I had gone with the STS or DTS Caddy instead. I'll be keeping track of everything in case this car turns out to be a lemon. Interestingly, my Aunt and Uncle also had some complaints about their 2007 Lucern. I used to think they were just being picky, but now I understand where they were coming from. It seems like GM still has some quality issues to work out. Maybe I should have gone with a Malibu instead!

Replaced transmission at 53,000 miles, luckily it was still under warranty. Come on GM, you're making the imports look better. I got excellent service from Moses GM though. Just wanted to give an update on my Lucerne: on 12-7-16, I traded it in for a 2012 Honda Accord EX-l V6 and I couldn't be happier. No more GM!

I recently rented a Lucerne and unfortunately, I didn't have a great experience with it. The gas mileage wasn't great and I found the interior controls to be a bit overwhelming with too many buttons. Additionally, I had some trouble with the radio system. Overall, it wasn't the best fit for me. However, I appreciate the opportunity to try it out.
