Buick Lucerne problems

The Buick Lucerne is a full-size car manufactured by General Motors from 2005 to 2011. Named for the city of Lucerne, Switzerland, it served as Buick's top-of-the-line sedan until it was replaced by the second generation Buick LaCrosse.

History

The Lucerne replaced the full-size LeSabre and the Park Avenue in the Buick range, and used a revised G platform, nonetheless referred to by GM as the H platform.

The Lucerne was introduced with the standard 3.8 liter Buick V6 (also known as the GM 3800 engine) or optional 4.6 liter Cadillac Northstar LD8 V8 as well as optional active suspension, marketed as Magnetic Ride Control. For 2005, all General Motors vehicles equipped with the 3.8 L V6 become the first SULEV-compliant vehicles.

The Lucerne featured a row of faux exhaust vents, marketed as "Ventiports," on the front fenders, corresponding to the number of cylinders in the engine — three on each side for the V6 or four for the V8. The CXL trim package added numerous premium features.

The Lucerne was manufactured at GM's Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly Plant alongside the Cadillac DTS. The plant won Initial Quality Awards from J.D. Power and Associates from 2004 through 2006. GM also lead all other automakers in Strategic Vision's Total Quality Index (TQI)

The Super trim level was introduced at the 2007 New York Auto Show, featuring the 4.6 liter Northstar L37 V8; revised trim; an increase of 17 hp (13 kW) horsepower, and revised front styling and a rear spoiler.

All Lucernes received modest mid-cycle updates in 2008, adding optional blind spot monitoring and lane departure warning system and revised exterior colors. Two new trim levels, CXL Special Edition (with more standard features than regular CXL) and Super, were added for 2008. The 2009 Lucerne received small upgades, including a new base engine, the 3.9 L GM High Value LZ9 V6, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and XM NavTraffic. Flex-fuel technology was made available at no additional cost.

For 2010, the Super's rocker panels, grille, and fog lights were added as standard equipment.

The 2011 Lucerne was largely unchanged. The last was built on June 15, 2011. The second generation LaCrosse replaced it as Buick's flagship sedan for 2012.

Common Buick Lucerne problems

The Buick Lucerne, a full-size luxury car, has faced several common problems reported by owners. These issues span across various components, including the powertrain, electrical system, braking system, and exterior accessories.

  • Fuse Block Melted: The 2009 Buick Lucerne has been plagued by problems with fuse blocks melting, leading to stuttering and stalling. The fuel pump relay overheats and melts in the fuse box, emitting a burning stench. This issue can occur as early as 54,000 miles, and replacing the melted fuse block with a new one usually resolves the problem. However, there have been no recalls to address this problem.
  • Electrical Issues: The electrical system in the Buick Lucerne, particularly in the 2008 model year, has faced several common complaints. These include sudden power loss while driving, burglar alarms going off unexpectedly, and unusual sounds from the fuel pump. Additionally, some drivers have experienced a poorly illuminated instrument control panel, making it difficult to read during daylight. Fuel pump failure, caused by a faulty fuel pump and relay, is also a common problem in the 2008 model year.
  • Braking System Complaints: Owners of the Buick Lucerne have reported various braking system issues. These include malfunctions in the ABS system, premature brake wear, and fluid leaks. These problems can compromise the braking performance of the vehicle and pose safety risks due to increased stopping distances. Brake pedal pulsation or a spongy feeling when the pedal is depressed may indicate potential problems with the brake pads or rotors. Faulty brake master cylinders can also affect the braking system's proper function.
  • Drivetrain Issues: Drivetrain components, such as the drive belt and differential, are essential for smooth operation. Drive belt failures can lead to a sudden loss of accessory drive functions, while differential fluid leaks may result in gear wear and eventual failure if not addressed promptly. Owners of the Buick Lucerne have reported such problems, which can lead to costly repairs and potential safety risks on the road.
  • Exterior Accessory Problems: The Buick Lucerne has faced challenges with exterior accessories, including problems with power mirrors, headlight assemblies, and windshield wiper motors. Power mirrors may fail to adjust or respond to controls, headlight assemblies may accumulate moisture or experience electrical faults, and windshield wiper motor failures can compromise visibility during inclement weather. These malfunctions not only impact the vehicle's functionality but also its safety, necessitating prompt attention and repair to ensure the well-being of occupants and the reliability of the vehicle.

Buick Lucerne 2008
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-10
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-10
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1G4HD57258U
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Fuse box (rear) 2008 Buick Lucerne CXL. FUEL PUMP Relay burns fuses out quickly. The fuse box located under the back seat has been having issues of burning where the fuel pump relay is located. It then in turn shorts out the fuse box which keeps needing to be replaced. This is a safety issue as it catches fire under the back seat. Fuse box has been replaced before and continues to have issues and melts, causing the vehicle to die in mid traffic, does at stop lights or even just parked and running it dies out and smells like burning plastic. The fuse box has caught fire several times. The issue has been confirmed by several mechanics and dealerships. Also there is a history of electrical problems with the rear fuse box in carfax. There was no warning, and now the check engine light is illuminated. We bought the vehicle last year in June of 2024. There seem to be no problems at the time until shortly after we had bought the vehicle. Turns out there's a long history of electrical problems involving the rear fuse box with this vehicle. I have uploaded screenshots of the car report on this vehicle. There are more complaints.

Buick Lucerne 2009
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-26
  • Date Complaint: 2024-08-01
  • VIN: 1G4HP57119U
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The car died suddenly and would not start, with no warnings or codes. Towed it to a Midas repair shop and it was diagnosed as a corroded Low Profile Fuel Pump relay. This was replaced, and the car ran fine for 3 days before going dead in the middle of driving and left me stranded in an intersection. Had to get it towed back to Midas where it was more accurately diagnosed that the issue with the relay was being caused by a faulty Rear Electrical Center. Both of these parts have been recalled, and I have only owned this car for a little over a year. It has only around 40,000 miles on it. Despite this recall, upon taking the car to the local Buick dealership, they stated they could not cover the recall due to it being expired before I even owned the car. I do not understand how it is right or fair for this to have to be paid out of pocket, for $183.53 and $818.81 respectively, when it is not my fault, it is a faulty GM parts issue, and GM stated they will not stand behind their product and cover the recall despite the evident risk to my safety if I was to continue driving the car without repair. I understand it is expired, but I fail to see how this is ethical when the part is still faulty to the point of being dangerous.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-03-23
  • VIN: 1G4HA5EM3BU
  • Components: SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Several malfunction indicator lights in dash appeared suddenly. Car would not start after shutting off. Finally started and drove to repair shop. Diagnosed as faulty ride height sensor. Shop searched for part at several dealers and online and found the part was discontinued in 2021. I contacted Buick and was offered $1500 off on a new GM car. I have not received any suggestions on how to repair the car or remove malfunction indicator lights which I specifically asked for. The repair shop is waiting for me to find the part and I have not been able to find one. Dealers have no answer and neither does Buick. The repair shop says it will start if sensor is unplugged but suspension will not work and dash will still have malfunction indicator lights. It is my opinion to operate under these conditions, it would definitely be hazardous.

Latest negative Buick Lucerne car reviews

  1. Norbert Jones 2024-11-23

    Vehicle year: 2009

In May of 2009, I wrote a review on the 2008 Lucerne CX car and I have an update for you. Unfortunately, I had to file a Lemon Law Lawsuit (June 2009) against Buick division due to possible mechanical failure involving the steering rack, transmission, and power steering unit. However, GM responded by denying my claim, stating that it did not cover appearance issues. I was surprised by this response as I did not mention anything about appearance issues. To make matters worse, shortly after filing the lawsuit, GM filed for bankruptcy, leaving me in a difficult situation. As a result, I have decided to no longer purchase GM cars/trucks. It is unfortunate that I had to end my 35-year loyalty to the brand.

The car's exterior styling, driving experience, and interior design leave much to be desired. The steering column controls are overly complicated and counterintuitive. Additionally, many of the interior components are outdated and have not been updated since the 1990s. These issues have contributed to my negative experience with the car during the two weeks I have had it on loan. However, it is important to note that these are my personal observations and experiences, and others may have a different perspective.

I purchased the car on October 31st. Unfortunately, a week later, antifreeze spilled all over the road. I brought the car back for service and they replaced the thermostat and gasket. However, I have been experiencing some issues with the gas pedal and steering wheel vibrating when going uphill. Despite visiting the dealership four times, the issue has not been resolved. The dealer replaced the motor mounts twice, but the problem still persists. The dealer has indicated that this is a design issue and cannot be fixed. Additionally, my foot goes numb after driving for two hours. I am disappointed with my experience with Buick and will be returning the car under the lemon law. I will not be purchasing a Buick again.

I recently purchased a 2010 Lucern and unfortunately, after just 4 days, I started experiencing some issues with the front end. It was making some strange noises that sounded like the traction bars or suspension. After doing some research, I'm feeling a bit disappointed with my purchase and wish I had gone with the STS or DTS Caddy instead. I'll be keeping track of everything in case this car turns out to be a lemon. Interestingly, my Aunt and Uncle also had some complaints about their 2007 Lucern. I used to think they were just being picky, but now I understand where they were coming from. It seems like GM still has some quality issues to work out. Maybe I should have gone with a Malibu instead!

Electrical flaws can be frustrating, but there are some simple solutions that can help. If you're experiencing a constant headache with your vehicle, try pulling the OnStar fuse and trimming the metal parts on the bottom of the backseat above the fusebox. It's also a good idea to condition the drive belt with water repellent and always carry a spare one, along with a 15mm wrench, especially if you'll be driving in heavy rain. Additionally, consider drilling a hole in the trunk to drain water. While it can be frustrating to deal with these issues, it's important to remember that the engineers and business executives at GM are working hard to create the best possible vehicles for their customers.

I'm glad to hear that you've been enjoying your Lucerne! From what you've said, it sounds like you haven't experienced any noise issues with your car. I personally prefer column shifts and have found them to be quite comfortable with my long legs. I'm curious, have you heard any feedback from Rick regarding his models with console shifts?

Overall, I really like the Lucerne. This is actually my second one, and before the Lucerne, I drove the LeSabre. Before switching to Buicks, I had been driving Pontiacs for 25 years. I truly believe that the Lucerne offers great value for the money.

I still love my Buick Lucerne after 15 years. It makes 25 miles to the gallon on the highway and is easy to handle. It's a very classy looking car and I bought it new in red. My neighbor liked it so much she bought one too. I've never been disappointed in it!

I've been driving my car for two years and have really enjoyed it, but I've encountered a problem. Gravel tends to get stuck behind the bumper, and if it's hit by another car, it can create a lump on the bumper. Unfortunately, I had to spend over $500.00 to get it fixed, and when I approached the dealer, they referred to it as a highway hazard. I think it would be great if they could find a way to prevent gravel from getting behind the bumper. I've been driving Buicks for most of my life, but I'm not sure if I'll continue if they're not suitable for driving on roads other than paved highways.
