2016 Buick Encore problems
The Buick Encore is a subcompact crossover SUV built by General Motors from 2012 to 2022. It is subcompact crossover SUV marketed by Buick and its fourth SUV overall after the Rendezvous, Rainier, and Enclave.
The "Encore" designation was previously used by American Motors Corporation (AMC) for the subcompact two and four-door hatchback variants of the U.S.-built front-wheel drive Renault Alliance from 1984 to 1987.
First generation (2013)
The first-generation Encore is a restyled first-generation Chevrolet Trax, and shares the same styling with the European Opel/Vauxhall Mokka. It debuted at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit on January 10, 2012, and went on sale at the end of 2012. The North American Encore is assembled at the GM Korea plant in Bupyeong, South Korea alongside the Trax. The Chinese market Encore is assembled in Shandong.
The 2013, 2014 and 2015 Encore in the U.S. was offered in Base, Convenience, Leather, and Premium level models with the A14NET 1.4-liter inline-four multi-port fuel injected (MFI) VVT turbo gasoline engine rated at 128 hp (95 kW; 130 PS) @ 4900 rpm coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission. It was available in front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) versions.
For 2016, a new Sport Touring second tier model was added which included an 18-inch alloy wheels with midnight silver finish, rear spoiler, body-color door handles, remote start, fog lights, and a new more powerful B14XFT Ecotec inline four-cylinder direct fuel injection VVT engine rated at 153 hp (114 kW; 155 PS) @ 5600 rpm in Encore marketing materials. However, Opel in Europe rates the engine for the Mokka at 150 hp (112 kW; 152 PS) @ 4900–6000 rpm.
The Ecotec direct-injection engine package includes Stop/Start technology to improve fuel economy and was made available as an option on all but the base model for 2017 and 2018. In 2017, the model levels became Base, Preferred, Sport Touring, Preferred II, Essence, and Premium.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-29
- VIN: KL4CJFSB8GB
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Acceleration was reduced immediately on the freeway after the check engine light came on the day before with a P0299 code for turbocharger repair. Now the vehicle will not start and the dealership service said an additional code of po366 is now showing. Are these related? The turbocharger has an extended special coverage, but not engine repair that is likely the result of the turbocharger failure.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-26
- VIN: KL4CJCSB4GB
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: In 2021, My ex husband received a notice from Buick extending the warranty to 120,000 on the Turbo Charger fuel injector due to failure in many vehicles. It was not included as a recall. In the State of Texas, vehicles must have an annual inspection to remain legal to drive. Each vehicle receives an annual Sticker. My sticker and inspection were due in July. In May of 2024, my check engine light came on. I took it to Autozone to diagnose, and they said it was the turbo charger. Since I had no idea my ex-spouse had a letter, I purchased fuel injector cleaner and did this every week. Chevron 92 has always been my gas of choice. Unfortunately, it only cleared the engine light for a few days and my vehicle failed inspection at 120,000 miles. I took my Buick Encore to a traveling mechanic, who cleaned the injectors (supposedly), and after driving about 100 miles and in July finally passed inspection to avoid a citation. At 122,00 miles, on [XXX] I drove my Buick to Dallas Texas, 571 miles one way. I barely made it; the check engine light came on again and the vehicle could barely accelerate. I stopped multiple times to install injector cleaner, used only the best 92 gas at chevron. When I arrived, i took my 2016 Buick Encore to Firestone. They diagnose the Turbo Charger again. unfortunately, the vehicle had reached 123,000 miles by then. They cleaned the Turbo charger but could not replace it. At that time, they let me know that might be a manufacturers defect, since this part should definitely last much longer than 123,000. Barely making it home again, with my [XXX] mother with me, I took my vehicle to Gay Buick GMC to get the Turbo Charger replaced. Buick informed me this was too far past the 120,000 and refused to even replace the part if I paid for labor. This is a $2,653.48 cost. May I ask for your assistance in a remedy, at least for the $700.00 part? INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-15
- VIN: KL4CJASB4GB
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: 2016 Buick Encore VIN [XXX] approximately 60,000 miles. The vehicles turbo had a catastrophic failure pushing oil into the engine, and the catalytic converter causing extensive damage to both. The description from the first mechanic shop, I took it to descripted it as the turbo exploded, spewing oil everywhere. Buick knows the turbo engine is faulty and they issued a 'special' warranty, however the warranty doesn't cover the damage caused by their faulty turbo engine. There wasn't anything I could've done to prevent this. In fact, the GM dealership replaced the turbo and that turbo failed and had to be replaced. I've been asked to cover the cost of repairing the engine, catalytic converter and clean the oil that sprayed the engine compartment. In hindsight, Buick should've issued a full recall on the turbo. They made a business decision not to recall the turbo, but they need to accept responsibility. Living in rural Northern Wisconsin, we are fortunate that this didn't happen in the winter. The resolution I seek is GM/Buick accept responsibility and cover the total cost of repair. This isn't directed at any of the GM/Buick employees I've dealt with, they have all been courteous and professional. ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-20
- VIN: KL4CJ2SM4GB
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The turbo on my 2016 Buick Encore hasn't been working right for about a year. My engine light has been on consistently everyday for about 8 months. I've taken it to the dealer to get it repaired, and there is a bulletin - Reference Number A212338300 - but for some reason my VIN doesn't meet the requirement of the turbo replacement - even though the bulletin is for a turbo replacement. Why is my turbo NOT covered by the bulletin? Clearly there is an issue with the part since a bulletin exists in the first place.

POWER TRAIN,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-05
- VIN: KL4CJBSB9GB
- Components: POWER TRAIN,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: Two different issues occurred. While driving the check engine light came on and then went off about 10 minutes later. While driving the vehicle to get check engine light code checked temperature suddenly jumped from normal operating temp just below mid to the top with instrument panel dinging saying engine overheating idle engine. As trying to make way to side of road the blind spot warning on passenger mirror began flashing constantly with no traffic within 1/4 mile from vehicle and instrument panel stating blind spot not available. Once able to get to have code checked showed same code that had been addressed with the replaced turbo 0299. Thermostat replaced less than 19k miles prior. When engine overheat came on power diminished rapidly.
ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-27
- VIN: KL4CJASB1GB
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: On Wednesday February 27, 2024 while driving on the highway suddenly after about 15 minutes the engine light came on stating "Engine Overheating - idle engine." The car decreased speed to about 40mph in a 60mph speed zone and then continued to decrease to 20mph with black smoke excessively blowing out of the exhaust and then a rattling /knocking sound continued from the engine until the car stopped in which I was able to pull over to the side emergency lane. My safety was at risk due to the car's sudden decrease in speed to a stop on a busy and crowded highway. I have been on the highway at least 5-6 other times in which the car almost stops on a busy expressway. I have brought the car to the GM dealership on several occasions in which I received 2 recall letters: one September 2019 (regarding the evaporative emissions purge valve does not properly close) and another recall letter November 2021 (regarding a condition that could cause the turbo charger to fail due to a sticking wastegate actuator linkage) from GM describing that there were recalls on my 2016 Buick Encore. After bringing the car to the GM dealership where I purchased the car, I explained that the engine will almost come to a stop. I described that it was very frightening to drive the car like this. The service center did complete repairs however the stalling engine continued and I continued to bring the car to the dealer complaining of this concern each time. The vehicle was not inspected by the police or insurance representatives. The Engine light sensor would continue to appear on the dash in which I brought this to the service department's attention at the GM Dealership. The GM dealership tried to correct the engine's problem but never succeeded, therefore the engine was defective and unsafe to be driving.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-14
- VIN: KL4CJBSB0GB
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: 2016 Buick Encore VIN # [XXX] with 67,584 miles. My car's check engine light came on. Upon checking the code at O'Reilly Auto I was told I had to see a mechanic as it showed code p0299, Turbo. I made an appointment at Garrigans Auto repair Shop, a reputable shop. After they inspected the SUV I was told the turbo had a crack and needed to be replaced. On 7/14/2023 I had the repairs done at a cost to me of $1,480.49 (attached). The car runs fine now. On 10/12/2023 I had another repair done on the car. This was the turbo emissions coolant line. While there, Thomas at the counter said he just received the notice of a "Special coverage [XXX] Turbocharger Replacement". I thanked him and contacted Buick. I talked to Diana and gave her my VIN number. She informed me of the extended coverage as long as my car was not more than 10 years old or more than 120,000 miles. My car has 67,584 miles (notice attached). She sent me the form and I filled it out and returned it (copy attached). The case number is [XXX] (attached). On 10/23/23 I received a call from Diane at Buick informing me my claim was denied. She said it was denied as it was not done at the dealership. If I had sustained a problem before Nov. 2021 I could file a claim but it had to be submitted by Nov. 2022. My work was done this year at a local shop. She said since it was not done at the dealership it was not covered. I told her I never knew of the 'special coverage' until after the work was done. She said it is not refundable. I asked for a supervisor who said the same thing. My issue is there is a serious malfunction of the turbo that could happen while I am driving down the interstate at 70 miles an hour only to have sudden reduced power or timing chain breakage causing serious damage to the car not to mention being hit from behind or when passing a semi due to loss of power or total engine malfunction (attached). Now I am contacting the NHTSA with my complaint. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

2016 Buick Encore recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2016 Buick Encore.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse and Chevrolet Spark EV, Caprice PPV and SS vehicles, 2014-2017 Buick Encore and Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles, 2015-2016 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe, Trax, Suburban and Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles, and 2015-2017 GMC Sierra HD 2500 and 3500 vehicles. While being previously remedied for recall 16V-651, the affected vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to remedy the recall condition. Without the update, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.
- Consequence: A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2017. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 17287.

These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on October 13, 2016. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. I recently visited our Buick dealer to test drive the 2016 Encore Sport Touring. I was fortunate enough to have a great salesman, Buzz Edwards, who helped me purchase one. After bringing it home, my wife loved it so much that I went back and bought another one for her. We both really enjoy driving the Encore. It has great quality, is very quiet and smooth (which is rare for a small SUV), and with the larger engine, it has plenty of power. I highly recommend Everett Buick in Bentonville and Buzz Edwards for their excellent service.

You'll be pleasantly surprised by the spaciousness inside. Even my 6' husband can slide in with ease. It's comfortable for both the passenger and driver, and as someone who has had back surgery, I appreciate the feeling of sliding into a chair when I get into the car. This is actually my second Encore, and I wasn't disappointed with the first. I was able to take advantage of some amazing end-of-year deals in 2016 and traded up from a 2014 to a new Premier 2016. I absolutely love this car and affectionately call it my 'whip about'. Most of the time, I have the seats down because I'm an antiquer and hauler of just about anything. It strikes the perfect balance between luxury and simplicity, with a touch of fun. I honestly can't say anything bad about it. I've owned many cars, but this one is my all-time favourite! So, while it may not be the Encore, it's definitely the second act, and I'm sure I'll be a fan and purchasing it for a long time to come.

Great gas mileage. The car is stylish, comfortable and has no blind spots. It has a very quiet ride without all the ground noise. Its size makes it easy to park just about anywhere. There is also lots of headroom, but it is a great fit for shorter drivers.

Hey there! Just a friendly reminder to make sure you use your iPhone within the first 30 days. I wanted to let you know that this vehicle works great with Androids, but unfortunately not with iPhones. Also, I noticed that the navigation was giving me verbal directions that were a bit off, but the on-screen view was correct. Just wanted to give you a heads up!

Bought brand new and unfortunately experienced some issues with excessive oil burning, as well as needing to have the turbo replaced. After the replacement, the oil was completely gone, but the mechanics were able to identify the issue as a faulty turbo and replaced it. However, the engine light came on again within 250 miles and it was determined that the fuel was running lean, which was promptly repaired. Unfortunately, the oil light began flashing again and it was discovered that the pistons were bad and needed to be replaced. Despite these challenges, it is important to note that GM did not take responsibility for the performance issues. If you are in the market for a new car, it may be worth considering a Toyota or Mazda instead of GM.

The interior of the car is lovely, with plush materials and a well-designed layout that provides good visibility. However, the engine is quite small at 1.4L, even with a turbo, and can feel underpowered. Despite its size, the gas mileage is not as good as one might expect, averaging around 25 to 27mpg. On the highway, it bumps up to 30 to 32mpg. Unfortunately, the engine is also known for oil leak problems, which I discovered after purchasing the car. I had to replace the valve cover multiple times before finally getting an OEM replacement that stopped the leaks. Additionally, the front and back cam seals, as well as the timing cover, were also leaking. After 20 hours of labor, the car was still leaking oil, but a master mechanic was able to identify and fix the issue with the two bad PCV valves. While I've had some issues with oil leaks, overall, it's a great car with a friendly design.

I was very close to purchasing a Buick Encore. I really liked the styling and trim, and the size was perfect for me. However, I had some concerns about the 1.4L engine and turbo chargers, as they do not impress me. I decided to take one for a test drive, but it did not seem as spunky as my 2.0L 2000 Tracker. Maybe I could get used to it though, as my Tracker is 17 years old now. Unfortunately, I had to walk away from the Encore due to the dark tinted glass. As I am getting older, my vision is not as good as it used to be, especially at night. Tinted glass is a real pain for me, as I need to be able to see out in every direction. I don't care if people can see in. What's important is that I can see out. The Encore does not seem to be available without the dark tinted glass in the back, and that seems to be the case with most new SUVs. Even the front glass is a bit dark for me. I guess I am going to have to keep driving my 1994 and 2000 4WD Trackers, as they go in the deep snow and on the ice, and can even pull a boat and trailer out of the water at the lake shore. The Encore can't even pull a small trailer, despite being called an SUV. I don't know if AWD would be as good. My Trackers have very light tinted glass, which is tolerable. Clear glass would be better. I really need a new car, but I can't find anything acceptable to me. Everything has dark tinted glass and way too many buttons on the dash. I can't drive and read the operator's manual at the same time. I don't text and drive. I like to be able to find the controls by touch. I don't want to have to look for them.I have to keep my mind on the road. I don't want distractions. Aftermarket tint is readily available for all car windows. Why do the automobile manufacturers have to force tinted glass on all of us? It definitely is a serious safety hazard.

I recently purchased a 2014 Encore with only 8,400 miles on it. Unfortunately, I had to have the piston replaced by 26,000 miles and had to take it in 3 times due to the smell of antifreeze coming through the vents. I decided to trade it in for a 2016 Encore, but have still experienced some issues. I have had to have the camshaft cover replaced twice within 25,000 miles and the crankshaft seal. I had to tow it to my dealership 3 times within a week and was putting in 2 quarts of oil between each oil change. It has been frustrating to deal with these issues, especially since I have two children that I need to get back and forth to school, which is a 60-mile round trip. Despite these challenges, I remain hopeful that I will find a reliable vehicle soon.

I loved my car when I first got it, but after a few months, I started noticing some issues. The road noise was quite noticeable, and the windows would vibrate in strong winds, which is pretty common in west TX. Additionally, my brakes would act up in humid or cold weather, even though I had taken it to the dealership and they said the brakes were fine. Unfortunately, at only 30,000 miles, the engine light came on, and it turned out that there was no coolant in the tank. The dealership informed me that the turbo charger in the engine needed to be replaced. It's been frustrating, but I'm hopeful that it will be resolved soon.
