The Ford Explorer is a range of SUVs manufactured by Ford Motor Company since the 1991 model year. As the first four-door SUV produced by Ford, the Explorer was introduced as a replacement for the two-door Bronco II. Within the current Ford SUV range in North America, the Explorer is slotted between the Ford Edge and Ford Expedition. As with the Ford Ranger, the Explorer derives its name from a trim package previously offered on the Ford F-Series pickup trucks.

The Explorer has been offered in multiple chassis and powertrain layouts. The first two generations were directly derived from the Ford Ranger, switching to a model-specific chassis for the third and fourth generations. The fifth generation was repackaged as a crossover SUV, adopting a variant of the Ford Taurus chassis architecture.

Alongside the five-door Explorer wagon, a three-door Explorer wagon was offered from 1991 to 2003, officially referred to as the Explorer Sport after 1999, serving as the direct replacement of the Bronco II; the 2001–2010 Ford Explorer Sport Trac was a crew-cab pickup derived from the model line. For police use, the Ford Police Interceptor Utility has been derived from the fifth and sixth-generation Explorer to replace the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (and the later Taurus-based Police Interceptor Sedan). Through rebranding, Mazda, Mercury, and Lincoln have sold versions of the Explorer; Lincoln currently markets the sixth-generation model line as the Lincoln Aviator.

For the North American market, the first four generations of the Explorer were produced by Ford at its Louisville Assembly Plant (Louisville, Kentucky) and at its now-closed St. Louis Assembly Plant (Hazelwood, Missouri); the model line is currently produced at Chicago Assembly Plant (Chicago, Illinois).

In 2020, CNBC reported the Ford Explorer range as the best-selling SUV of all time in America.

Common 2017 Ford Explorer problems

The 2017 Ford Explorer has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine, transmission, electrical system, and steering control.

  • Engine and Transmission Issues: The biggest complaints with the 2017 Ford Explorer are the transmission (33 percent), engine (25 percent), and electrical (seven percent).
  • Electrical Failure: Some 2017 Ford Explorer owners are experiencing an electrical failure in which the AC fan constantly runs, which could potentially be due to a faulty APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module). This module controls almost all of the vehicle accessories, including heat/defrost and some lighting.
  • Body Paint and Interior Accessories: For the 2011-2017 model years, the vehicle was plagued with more body paint (22 percent) and interior accessories (13 percent) issues.

While these issues may be concerning, it is essential to note that the 2017 Ford Explorer has a solid reputation as a dependable SUV, with a high count of recalls, but only a few of them are very serious.

On September 26, 2024, I took my 2017 Ford Explorer into the Ford Dealership for another issue and found out that my water pump was cracked again, leaking antifreeze, and that it needed to be replaced. Again, if not replaced massive safety issue could occur when driving. Earlier in September when driving the vehicle on the highway the entire vehicle shut down, lost the power steering, and the vehicle literally died in the parking lot of a tire shop. Replaced the alternator but still had issues with the engine after the replacement which now I learned could have been from the antifreeze leaking out of the water pump. Ford will not cover the replacement of the water pump because it 9 months past the warranty.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-19
  • VIN: 1FM5K8FH5HG
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: In November of 2020 Ford Motor Company issued a recall on vehicles manufactured in their Chicago plant for transmissions torque converter issues under customer satisfaction program 20B27/20N07 which was in effect until November 30, 2021. It was not until September 2022 that I personally started having issues, I took my vehicle to Bob Bell a Ford Dealership for a check engine light issue and completing their diagnostics they confirmed it was a torque converter issue. However, I was advised that my warranty had just ended and it was no longer under warranty to be fixed and I would have to pay out of pocket. I contacted Ford Customer Support Division and they opened case number [XXX] in reference. They advised me the recall was over and to contact the NHTSA who can investigate the matter and issue a new recall for my vehicle. I am requesting an investigation into this matter and Ford be held liable to replace the transmission as a recall and refund me the $195.00 I paid for the diagnostic fee. The transmission issue has affected a large number of vehicles which Ford obviously were aware of and those owners whose issues started after the expiration date of the program should not be penalized and made to pay out of pocket especially when this is a know problem and documented problem with the Explorers manufactured out of the Chicago plant.
