The Buick Encore GX is a subcompact crossover SUV built by General Motors starting in 2019. Like the smaller Encore and the related Chevrolet Trailblazer, the Encore GX is manufactured by GM Korea. In China, it is manufactured by the SAIC-GM joint venture.

Overview

The Encore GX was revealed alongside the second generation Encore at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show. It shares the VSS-F platform with the new Chevrolet Trailblazer crossover SUV. The size of the Encore GX is subcompact-plus, positioned between the subcompact Encore and the compact Envision.

After the discontinuation of the smaller Encore, the Encore GX was the entry-level offering from Buick, until the arrival of the larger but less expensive Envista.

Common 2021 Buick Encore gx problems

The Buick Encore GX, introduced in 2020, has been praised for its sprightly acceleration, competent handling, comfortable ride, upscale interior, and robust list of tech features. However, some common problems have been reported by owners, primarily in the 2020 model year.

  • Antenna issues: The most reported problem in the Buick Encore GX is related to the antenna. Many owners have complained that the antenna was not installed correctly at the factory, leading to poor radio reception or the need for a replacement piece.
  • Engine oil light: Some owners have reported issues with the engine oil light coming on, which could indicate a problem with the oil pressure sensor or the oil pump. This issue may require a more significant repair, such as replacing the oil pump or the fuel pump, which can be costly.
  • Noise and vibration: Some owners have reported that the Encore GX can be noisy, especially on the highway. This issue is often accompanied by excessive vibration, which can be distracting and uncomfortable during long drives.
  • Rear visibility: The thick roof pillars of the Encore GX can reduce rear visibility, making it difficult to see other vehicles, pedestrians, or obstacles when changing lanes or reversing.
  • Cost: While the Encore GX offers premium features and accommodations, it comes at a cost. The vehicle is priced higher than many of its competitors in the subcompact crossover SUV segment, making it less accessible for some buyers.

It is important to note that these issues are not universal to all Buick Encore GX models, and many owners have reported positive experiences with the vehicle. However, these common problems should be considered when purchasing a Buick Encore GX, particularly for the 2020 model year. It is also recommended to check for any recalls and ensure that they have been adequately addressed before purchasing a vehicle.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-21
  • VIN: Kl4mmds2xmb
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I'm in need of a repair on my 2021 Buick Encore GX. It was seen at GM of Marion on July 30 for a warning light that came on as I was driving down the road after having an oil change. It stated my power was reduced. I took it in, and they told me they had just diagnosed this problem for another Encore owner, and it took two weeks to get the part in. It is now September 22, and I still do not have this fixed. It is a safety concern and I have been calling GM about it almost weekly, trying to get some help. How is it safe for my daughter & I to be driving down the road with only half power? I cannot pass anyone - the speed isn't there. I can't just pull out or even merge onto the interstate for fear of being ran over. And GM does not appear to care. I've been told by multiple dealerships that GM has them. They just will not freely send them out to dealerships to repair cars. I think if they have a car sitting on their lot that has the part, they should be allowed to use it to take care of the one that is already sold. I'm at 31,000 miles, and they told me it may not be covered if I am outside of my warranty when they decide to send the part. I need some help!

There were other messages that cycled that I did not get to make note of, but one made mention of "power steering." Upon research, I found that there are recalls on certain 2021 Buick Encore GX's for an issue related to brake system failure. I was told, based on my VIN number, that my vehicle is not included in that specific recall, however, when my brake system failed, it did exactly as what was described as the potential consequences of the brake failure issue in the vehicles recalled.

Negative 2021 Buick Encore gx car reviews

  1. Deven Nicolas 2024-11-14

Based on my personal experience and research, I strongly advise against purchasing another car made in Korea. In my case, I have had to take my car to the shop for the same issues for more than two months out of the three that I have owned it. The car experiences sudden power loss, acceleration, and sporadic up and down power, making it extremely difficult to drive and reach a safe location. The car's TCM's and Speed Sensors have repeatedly thrown codes, causing further frustration and inconvenience. It is clear that this car model has significant issues that need to be addressed by the manufacturer.

  2. Cielo Schiller 2024-09-06

I previously owned a 2014 Encore and it was a great little car. Although it was a bit sluggish, it was still a safe and exceptional car to handle on snowy Michigan roads. When it came time to upgrade, I knew I had to look at a newer Encore for its winter driving performance and fuel economy. However, my 2021 Encore GX XT has been a bit difficult to handle. I had to turn off the auto correct feature because it was a struggle to drive correctly. While you have to manually engage the AWD, I'm not sure if it even makes a difference. I've been driving on snowy roads for over 20 years and have never felt as little in control as I do with this car. I even bounced off a curb going 10 MPH last winter because the car wouldn't let me correct, almost like the steering locked up or something. Just this past week, when taking off from a stop sign, the car's rear end decided to swerve and it took quite a bit of correcting to get it to cooperate. I'm feeling quite frustrated and I'm seriously contemplating getting something different that is safer to drive in the winter. Although I love the looks of the car and want to love it, I'm not sure if it's the right fit for me.

  3. Obie Beatty 2024-07-22

We purchased a 2021 Encore GC 1.3t AWD as the second owners, with a clean Carfax record. Unfortunately, we have experienced multiple issues with the car, including an oil leak that persisted despite the Buick dealership replacing the oil pan three times. Despite their efforts, the car has been in the shop six times in four months, with the engine requiring a complete tear down and reseal. Although the dealership claimed to have assistance from a GM engineer, the issues have persisted. We are currently returning the car to the shop for rattling, grinding, and whining noises. While we appreciate that everything is under warranty, we would prefer if GM would buy the car back so we could return to our previous vehicles. Despite these challenges, we remain confident that the dealership and GM will work to resolve these issues in a timely and satisfactory manner.

  4. Salvador Hackett 2024-07-17

The car drives and handles wonderfully, with lots of safety features. However, the 9-speed CVT is lacking in performance. Despite this, I am confident in my assessment that Buick produces high-quality vehicles. Unfortunately, my recent experience with their customer service has been disappointing. I have had the engine light on for two weeks, and they have informed me that they have no service dates available for weeks to look at it. I believe that this issue should be addressed promptly and with the utmost care.

  5. Jesus Stehr 2024-07-08

I should have known I was making a mistake, but the opening into the car is a little difficult for older people. Additionally, the car is just a little too snug in width, and the vision from the rear is not adequate. Furthermore, the cargo space is too small. Although the car is pretty, I was consumed with the idea of having a new car. It was my fault for not being a wise shopper!

Positive 2021 Buick Encore gx car reviews

  1. Sim Jacobi 2024-11-12

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying the car! It's impressive how much power it has for its size, and the fuel mileage is fantastic.

  2. Keenan Rosenbaum 2024-11-10

The 2021 GX Essence model is a fantastic ride. I respectfully disagree with Edmunds' review that the cabin is noisy. However, it's worth noting that the seat size may not be suitable for larger individuals. On the plus side, I get 28 mpg in the city, the dash panel is incredibly intuitive, and the Essence model boasts a turbocharged engine and 9-speed transmission, as well as a host of other features!

  3. Jarrell Zulauf 2024-09-18

Hi there! Have you considered purchasing this item?

  4. Nils Kuhic 2024-07-29

Hi there! That's a really nice car you've got there, especially considering the price!

  5. Deven Wintheiser 2024-07-12

Handles nice rides ok good mpg. My GX is top of the line and all the add-ons work great. No service is needed on anything.
