After the discontinuation of the smaller Encore, the Encore GX was the entry-level offering from Buick, until the arrival of the larger but less expensive Envista.

Common 2020 Buick Encore gx problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 2020 Buick Encore GX, several common problems have been reported:
- Engine Light and Reduced Power: Owners have experienced the engine light coming on and the engine reducing power, limiting the vehicle's speed to around 35 MPH. This issue occurred multiple times, leading to concerns about safety, especially when driving at higher speeds on the freeway. The dealership initially attributed it to a software update but later had to replace a turbo on the engine to address the problem.
- Transmission Issues: Some owners have reported issues with the transmission, including slipping gears and complete stall outs. These transmission problems have caused safety concerns, such as rolling backward into traffic, especially on highways and at intersections. Despite multiple visits to the dealership, the issue persisted, leading to a replacement of a part in the transmission and eventually the need for a full transmission replacement.
- Fuel Injection Problems: Another common problem reported by owners is related to fuel injection issues. Some owners have complained about a strong smell of raw gas in the cabin, indicating a potential fuel system problem. Parts for repair were on backorder, leaving owners with concerns about safety and the vehicle's performance.
These issues highlight significant concerns with the 2020 Buick Encore GX, ranging from engine performance to transmission and fuel system reliability. Owners have expressed frustration with the recurrence of these problems despite attempts at repair and maintenance, emphasizing the need for thorough inspections and timely resolution of these issues to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-21
- VIN: KL4MMBS29LB
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I was driving on the interstate on June 7, 2023 heading to work doing the speed limit of 60 MPH and all of a sudden the check engine light came on and a message stated "Engine Power Reduced" and the engine literally dropped engine power immediately and thankfully there was nobody right behind me and I was able to get off the interstate to a safe place. I called the Buick GMC dealership where I purchased the vehicle and they said to bring it in. They pulled codes on it and it gave a code of "engine under boost" and they said they ran tests on it and could not find anything wrong after 3 days at the shop, they did a software update and told me to come and pick it up. Then not even a week later, I was driving and out of nowhere came the same engine light, message read "engine power reduced" and the engine lost power immediately and I called the Buick GMC dealership again and they said to bring it back in and it's there now. I called today to check in and they said they are going to test the Turbo on it and order parts, etc. but they still do not have a definitive answer as to what's wrong with it yet. I bought my 2020 Buick Encore GX new in November 2020 and it has about 26,000 miles on it. No recalls have been made on my VIN model - I am afraid to even drive this car again and get stuck somewhere away from help or at night - someone could have rear ended me when I lost power on the interstate doing 60 MPH and killed me!!!

- VIN: KL4MMGSL3LB
- Components: SEAT BELTS,SEATS
- Summary: We have two infants in car seats. The car does not have the car seat LATCH system in it. The instructions were followed in the cars manual for placement but none were found. There are indications on the seat where you should place the latch buckle but the latch welded hooks are not there. I took the vehicle to the dealership Buick Gee in Liberty Lake WA where it is leased and was also told there by the service manager and the sales team that there are no latch hooks to be found in this car for the car seat to attach to. They agreed that there should be some there and could be a mistake at the factory. The dealer manager also came out to verify the latch system was not in vehicle. He also went to look at the other vehicles of the same year make and model, all of which did not have the welded hooks in the car for the car seat latch system. When I worked at the fire department I thought this system was mandatory in all vehicles manufactured and sold in the USA after the 90’s. POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-04-10
- VIN: kl4mmdsl5lb
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: I have only had the vehicle for a year. On multiple occasions the vehicle feels like it is slipping gears (more often when the autostop feature is turned on). On multiple occasions the vehicle has stalled out and would not do anything when pressing on gas- didn't even rev, did absolutely nothing. These stall outs happened crossing highways, at stop lights, stop signs, etc. There were no warnings prior to the incidences, though the vehicle did through an engine/transmission code afterwards, the code would go away. The first several attempts of taking it to the dealership (last year) as it is still under warranty- it was not checked. i was simply told it was a "glitch" and it was fine. They did not record in their system that i requested it to be checked either apparently. They only recorded that i brought it in for an oil change. They only checked into it this February after my boyfriend told them what it was doing. They kept it and replaced one part in the transmission. The vehicle continued to have the same issues and threw a code withing the first 5 minutes after picking it up. I took it back in- and they said it was doing the issues because of the code it threw. I told them it was doing it again before it threw the code. They said it simply needed a line vacuumed out, and then gave it back to me. It continued to have the same issues and stalled out again causing me to roll backwards onto the highway-into traffic. I took it back again. They kept it, and then told me they'd be replacing the entire transmission, but it is on backorder. Still no time frame when it will be repaired. They then told me i could have my car back and continue to drive it until the transmission comes in?!? I said no- it isn't safe, I just told you what happened and i could have been hurt or killed. I am not driving it, especially when i have my son to drive around as well! I have been without my car for at least a month now. I am paying for a car that i don't even have/can't drive.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-08
- VIN: kl4mmfsl3lb
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: While driving this 2020 Buick Encore GX with around 7,000 miles on the odometer, the entire electrical/electronic system shut down. Windows were inoperative, the AC stopped, the radio failed, the flashers did not work, etc. The only things that worked were the engine and brakes. I have no idea if the brake lights worked. I was able to drive the car to the dealership - Van Buick GMC in Scottsdale, Arizona where the car is now sitting and awaiting their inspection. In the 95 degree temperature here in AZ, I thought that I would die as I could not open the doors. I have since learned that I could have opened the doors by pulling the door handle twice. No one ever educated me on this. There were no advance warnings prior to the failure. This car is a death trap. Please NHTSA help me.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-16
- VIN: KL4MMDSL2LB
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: I live in Oklahoma so it’s hot then cold then hot again then colder the next morning. I had my defroster on while on my way to work and all of a sudden my window just cracks and spreads all across my window. I didn’t have a chip at all and there wasn’t even a vehicle in front of me. Idk if it was because it was real cold and had the defroster on but this still shouldn’t have happened. And they want me to pay almost $1000 to change it out because you also have to get the cameras readjusted correctly. GM should pay for this. It absolutely wasn’t my fault.

The moment I test drove this car, I knew it was perfect for me. It's just the right size, with a roomy interior and all the extras anyone could want, and it comes with a sticker price under 35,000. The 3-cylinder engine has lots of pep and the gas mileage is amazing. What's more, it has the pick-up of a six-cylinder engine. The car is beautiful both inside and out.
-
I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my 2020 Encore GX. During my test drive, I didn't notice any noises and the car felt very secure. However, after rolling down the windows for the first time, I noticed some wind noise that made it seem like the window wasn't fully closed. I've brought this up with the dealership, but unfortunately they haven't been able to hear it. I recommend testing the windows on different types of roads before making a purchase. Additionally, I noticed that there isn't any protection from the mechanics of the car under the driver's side floor. Lastly, the headrests on the back seats can be a bit obstructive, so be careful. Unfortunately, there's no Sirius XM or GPS, but overall I'm really enjoying my new car!
-
Great vehicle
-
The car is comfortable, has good pickup, and is well-appointed. However, the brake squeal from 10,000 miles onward is disappointing. Despite the dealer's claim that it is due to the pad compound, it is unacceptable for a wear item to cause such a disturbance. The manufacturer should take responsibility and address this issue promptly.
-
This is a lovely and enjoyable car to drive. They clearly put a lot of thought into it!

After only two weeks of owning my car, I experienced issues with the brakes and power steering. Upon towing it to the dealer, it was determined that the master cylinder was the culprit. Unfortunately, the part is currently on back order, and I have been utilizing a rental car for the past three weeks.

The engine light came on and it turned out to be the purge pump. It was fixed on 11/2/20. However, on 11/3/20, the engine light came on again for the second time. That's quite unusual.
Celestino Schulist 2024-07-25
The transmission vibrates at each shift point with normal driving. This is the second time I have taken it to the dealer. However, the GM dealership tech has verified that the problem is operating as designed. While this may not be the news I was hoping for, I appreciate the dealership's thoroughness in checking the issue. If you are considering purchasing this vehicle, it may be worth discussing this concern with the dealership to ensure it meets your needs and expectations.
Patrick Armstrong 2024-07-02
You must have been so disappointed when the engine light came on and your car went into Limp mode, but it's great to hear that the dealership was able to repair it and get you back on the road within two days. It's unfortunate that the transmission went out after 4800 miles, but at least you're covered since it's a lease. I hope the dealership is able to repair it quickly for you.
