Common 2010 Porsche Cayman problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2010 Porsche Cayman, several common problems have been reported:

  • Rear Main Seal Oil Leak: Another significant problem is the rear main seal oil leak. This issue can be particularly destructive if not addressed promptly, potentially leading to clutch damage in manual cars. The leaking seal can indicate other underlying issues and may require immediate attention to prevent further damage.
  • Brake Problems: Some owners have experienced brake problems with the 2010 Porsche Cayman. Discs can become warped if the car is not driven hard enough, highlighting the importance of regular use and maintenance to prevent issues with the braking system.
  • Suspension Issues: Knocking noises from the suspension over bumps and uneven ride height can indicate potential suspension problems in the Cayman. These issues may require inspection to determine the best course of action and prevent further damage.
  • IMS Bearing: While the majority of 2010 Caymans should not have this problem, early models were equipped with an intermediate shaft bearing (IMS) that could lead to catastrophic engine failure. It's crucial to check if the previous owner has had the necessary upgrades or retrofits to prevent this issue.
  • Electrical and Engine-Based Problems: Apart from the mentioned issues, some owners have reported problems related to electrics and the engine. Regular maintenance and inspections are essential to address these issues promptly and ensure the long-term reliability of the vehicle.

These common problems with the 2010 Porsche Cayman highlight the importance of regular maintenance, prompt attention to any leaks or unusual noises, and thorough inspections before purchasing a used Cayman to prevent potential costly repairs and ensure the vehicle's longevity.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-03-21

  • Summary: INTERIOR HEADLINER MATERIAL BECOMES UNGLUED AND DROOPS DOWN CREATING A DISTRACTION AND OBSTRUCTING REARWARD VISION THROUGH REAR VIEW MIRROR.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-12-05
  • VIN: WP0AA2A81AU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS (55-60 MPH), ATTEMPTED TO DOWNSHIFT DUE TO TRAFFIC AND THE MANUAL GEAR SHIFT LEVER DID NOT RESPOND. IT WAS COMPLETELY LIMP AND SEEMED DISCONNECTED FROM THE SHIFTING ACTION. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO NEGOTIATE THE VEHICLE THROUGH TRAFFIC, TO AN OFF RAMP AND INTO A SAFE PARKING SPOT. HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE SHIFTER CABLE HAD BROKEN. AFTER SOME RESEARCH I NOTICED THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR THE PORSCHE CAYMAN, SO I'M REPORTING THIS AS IT POSES A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY HAZARD FOR DRIVERS OF THE VEHICLE AND THOSE AROUND THEM WHEN THIS PROBLEM OCCURS. OBVIOUSLY NOT BEING ABLE TO SHIFT INTO DIFFERENT GEARS WHILE IN ANY SORT OF TRAFFIC CREATES A RISK OF INJURY OR DEATH. THE MANUFACTURER IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND HAS APPARENTLY DONE NOTHING TO CORRECT IT. THE REPAIR COSTS ARE ALSO STEEP -- IT COST ME $1,325 FOR THE CABLE TO BE REPLACED, AS WELL AS OVER $100 FOR THE TOW TO THE DEALERSHIP. MY VEHICLE HAS 65,000 MILES ON IT, BUT I HAVE READ OF INCIDENTS WHERE THIS OCCURRED ON VEHICLES WITH FEW MILES AND SOME REPORT IT HAS BROKEN REPEATEDLY. SO I WOULD LIKE TO REQUEST THAT NHTSA INVESTIGATE PORSCHE AND URGE THE COMPANY TO ADDRESS THE SAFETY ISSUE WITH A RECALL AND/OR REIMBURSEMENT FOR REPAIR COSTS. THANK YOU. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-02-12
  • VIN: WP0AB2A80AU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I WAS ACCELERATING ONTO THE FREEWAY WHEN THE GEARSHIFT CABLE TO THE TRANSMISSION BROKE CAUSING ME TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE CAR BECAUSE I HAD NO CONTROL OF WHAT GEAR I WAS IN AND I WAS UNABLE TO SHIFT GEARS. AS IT TURNED OUT, I WAS STUCK IN FIRST GEAR AND I WAS ABLE TO GET OFF THE FREEWAY, LUCKILY. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY MECHANIC WHO CONFIRMED THAT THE GEARSHIFT CABLE TO THE TRANSMISSION HAD BROKEN. HE SAID THAT THIS WAS COMMON FOR MY CAR. IT COST ME $840 TO REPAIR. SEARCHING THE INTERNET, THIS APPEARED TO A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL OF PORSCHE. I HAVE OWNED MANY CARS WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS AND HAVE NEVER HAD THE GEARSHIFT CABLE BREAK. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND COULD HAVE CAUSED SERIOUS INJURY IF I HAD LOST CONTROL OF MY CAR WHILE TRAVELING ON MOUNTAINOUS ROADS OR TRYING TO PASS ANOTHER CAR AT FREEWAY SPEEDS. *TR

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-02-12
  • VIN: WP0AB2A80AU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: SHIFTER CABLE BROKE AS I WAS ENTERING THE FREEWAY LEAVING ME WITHOUT CONTROL OF THE TRANSMISSION. AS IT WAS, I WAS STUCK IN FIRST GEAR, BUT I COULD HAVE BEEN STUCK OUT OF GEAR, WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE DANGEROUS. THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM AND KNOW DEFECT TO PORSCHE MECHANICS AND MANY OCCURRENCES ARE POSTED ON THE INTERNET. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE, BESIDES BEING A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. *TR

Negative 2010 Porsche Cayman car reviews

  1. Darion Kirlin 2024-11-20

This car is definitely a head turner in the looks department and can be quite fun to drive (when it runs properly). It also has some functional features such as cupholders and front and rear storage. However, I have had some unfortunate experiences with Porsche as a brand. I have owned two Porsches and both have been the most unreliable vehicles I have ever owned. This particular car has been in the garage every $5K miles due to various issues such as failed oil separator (2x), maf issues (2x), power steering leak, and more. It's quite puzzling to me how this car has received good reviews.

  2. Ray Deckow 2024-11-17

I like the car but have noticed that the headliner is sagging.

  3. Madison Kutch 2024-07-26

This car has good handling, but it's important to be cautious about overpaying. Dealers tend to overcharge for this model, and it's easy to realize you've overpaid when you try to sell it later. Unfortunately, this model is known for IMS problems, which can cause major engine issues. Unlike American or Japanese cars, the cost of repairing a Porsche engine can be very high. If you're interested in this model, I suggest looking for a 2009 or later version, as they are less common and tend to hold their value better. It's important to be aware that, like many German cars, this model can be overrated if it's not an S model. Non-S models may lack the performance you're looking for.

Positive 2010 Porsche Cayman car reviews

  1. Kyle Jones 2024-11-27

I have owned my Cayman S for two short weeks and I must say, I am thoroughly impressed with its overall handling and performance. I traded in my Mercedes Benz SL 500 and I have absolutely no regrets. The styling, performance, and ease of handling have far exceeded my expectations!

  2. Johnson Donnelly 2024-11-20

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with this amazing vehicle that I bought back in January 2008. So far, I've put in about 1600 miles and I must say, having owned Bimmer, Mercedes, Lexus & Infiniti in the past, this car by far offers the most fun and exhilaration to drive. The engine puts out an unmistakable note that sounds almost like a symphony orchestra. I'm really happy with the car's acceleration & performance, and it averages 19.7 mpg. However, I do have a few complaints about the body integrity, stereo, and Tiptronic buttons. Unfortunately, the rear-end produces rattle noises, but I've taken it to the dealer three times, including a replacement of the tail-light assembly under factory service bulletin, and they still can't seem to fix it. Lastly, I think the Tiptronic buttons should really be paddle-shifters. Thanks for reading!

  3. Edgardo Tremblay 2024-11-11

My 3rd Porsche, previously a 914 & a 924, ALL FUN, (total of 53 cars since 1957). The Cayman is perfect and I am 81 years young. The ONLY thing I will say against it is that, here in Canada in the winter with my all season Pirelli Pilots on, it is not very useful in snow of more than a smidgeon. That is where my Volvo S80 AWD comes out all the time.

  4. Dominic McCullough 2024-11-09

Plain and simple, this is one awesome car. The Cayman S has great acceleration, is lightweight, has great handling, and a heart-stopping top speed. While the 911S may offer more, I personally don't think it's worth the extra 25-30K.

  5. Judah Rolfson 2024-11-08

What a great car! It's so connected to the road and has plenty of low-end torque with the new PDK auto transmission, even in my 2.9 model. The build quality is impeccable, but be careful not to go overboard with the options, or it can get very expensive! For example, the standard manual seats are great, so there's no need for sport seats or even electric ones. It's stunningly beautiful, especially in light colors like white or silver. This is the best handling car I've ever had, even better than BMW's and Audi's. It's changed my life in that I now LOVE my 45-minute commute to work every day instead of dreading it. I chose this over the 335i in the end, which is also a great car, but some of the pure joy was engineered out of it.
