Common 2001 Chevrolet Monte carlo problems

The Chevrolet Monte Carlo, a discontinued line of cars produced by General Motors, has had its fair share of issues throughout its various model years. While the 2001 Monte Carlo has the highest number of overall complaints, the 2005 model year is considered worse due to factors such as higher repair costs and problems at lower mileage. Here are some of the most common problems reported by owners of the 2001 Monte Carlo:

  • Turn signals work intermittently: This issue has been reported by 29 owners of the 2001 Monte Carlo. The average cost to fix this problem is $500, and it typically occurs at an average mileage of 55,000. This can be a significant safety concern, as other drivers may not be aware of the driver's intentions, leading to potential accidents.
  • Passlock Security: This problem affects the 2001 Monte Carlo, as well as other model years. Chevrolet's Passlock Security system is designed to prevent theft by disabling the car's ignition if it detects an unauthorized attempt to start the vehicle. However, this system has been known to malfunction and prevent the actual owner from starting the car. This issue has been reported 29 times for the 2001 Monte Carlo, and while it may not have a direct monetary cost, it can cause significant inconvenience and frustration.
  • Car will not start, security light is flashing: This issue has been reported 16 times for the 2001 Monte Carlo. The security light, often indicating an issue with the Passlock Security system, may flash, preventing the car from starting. The average cost to fix this problem is $2,000, and it typically occurs at an average mileage of 65,000.
  • Security light comes on and car won't start: This issue is similar to the previous one but has been reported for the 2003 Monte Carlo. The security light comes on, and the car will not start, indicating an issue with the Passlock Security system. This problem has been reported 13 times for the 2003 Monte Carlo.
  • Service traction system & ABS lights on: This issue has been reported 11 times for the 2001 Monte Carlo. The traction system and ABS lights may come on, indicating an issue with the car's traction control or anti-lock braking system. This problem typically occurs at an average mileage of 55,000, but the average cost to fix it is not provided.
  • Transmission slams into gear: This issue has been reported 10 times for the 2007 Monte Carlo. The transmission may suddenly slam into gear, causing a jolt or jerking sensation. This problem typically occurs at an average mileage of 50,000, but the average cost to fix it is not provided.
  • Electrical problems: The 2001 Monte Carlo has had a total of 115 electrical complaints, making it the worst problem category for this model year. These issues can range from minor inconveniences, such as interior lighting malfunctions, to more significant problems, such as engine control module failures. The average cost to fix these electrical issues is not provided.
  • Interior problems: The 2001 Monte Carlo has had a total of 88 interior complaints, which can include issues with the car's upholstery, controls, or features. The average cost to fix these interior issues is not provided.
  • Engine problems: The 2001 Monte Carlo has had a total of 66 engine complaints, which can include issues with the engine's performance, fuel efficiency, or emissions. The average cost to fix these engine issues is not provided.
  • Cooling system problems: The 2001 Monte Carlo has had a total of 50 cooling system complaints, which can include issues with the car's radiator, water pump, or thermostat. The average cost to fix these cooling system issues is not provided.
  • Transmission problems: The 2001 Monte Carlo has had a total of 47 transmission complaints, which can include issues with the car's automatic or manual transmission. The average cost to fix these transmission issues is not provided.

These common problems with the 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo highlight the importance of regular maintenance and addressing issues as soon as they arise. While some problems, such as the Passlock Security system, may not have a direct monetary cost, they can still cause significant inconvenience and frustration. Understanding these common issues can help owners make informed decisions about their vehicles and take proactive steps to maintain their car's reliability and longevity.

2001 Chevrolet Monte carlo recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 8 recalls for different components of the 2001 Chevrolet Monte carlo.

2015-10-26
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina and Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1997-2004 Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix, 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala, and 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. The affected vehicles were previously repaired under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 to address the possibility that engine oil may drip onto the hot exhaust manifold.
  • Consequence: Engine oil that drips onto the hot surface of the exhaust manifold may result in a fire.
  • Remedy: The remedy applied under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 did not adequately remove the safety risk. Under the improved remedy, dealers will replace the engine’s front valve cover and gasket. Vehicles that are covered by recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, or 15V-201 that have not yet received the original remedy will instead receive the improved remedy under the original recall number. The recall began on February 19, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Oldsmobile customer service at 1-800-442-6537 and Pontiac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 15757. Note: Until the improved remedy has been applied, owners are advised to park their vehicle outside since the fire risk exists even when the vehicle is unattended.
2014-07-03
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.

Negative 2001 Chevrolet Monte carlo car reviews

I had a few issues with my car that were quite unexpected. The battery went bad at 10,000 miles, the head gasket blew at 45,000 miles (with a constant low coolant light on, which was an expensive repair), and the fuel injectors were bad at 25,000 miles (but they were cleaned). Additionally, the engine mounts had to be replaced at 60,000 miles, which was very expensive, and the AC controls went bad at 40,000 miles. The electronic module computer also went bad at 60,000 miles, which was replaced at a very high cost. The mechanic at the dealer's said that he has seen these problems repeated over and over with this model. Unfortunately, I had to pay for all of these repairs myself, even though I had mechanical breakdown insurance. It's quite disappointing to have spent so much on repairs for a new car. I have decided to switch to a different brand. Thank you for listening to my experience.

Although I enjoyed the driving experience of my Monte Carlo, I have had a number of negative experiences with the vehicle. Despite being 6'2

  3. Ian Reichert 2024-06-05

I remember when I first bought the car, I absolutely loved it. It drove and handled well, and had a smooth ride. I even enjoyed the power, although I now feel like it could be a little stronger. Unfortunately, my experience has not been as positive since then. In the past year alone, I have had to invest $2500-$3000 in repairs. Since purchasing the car with 29,000 miles, I have had to rebuild the transmission (at 54K), replace a high-pressure line for the A/C, replace struts and bearing plates, replace the temperature sending unit, resolder the rear defrost, rebuild the brakes all around (including calipers), replace tie rod ends, and the headlights have a short causing my daytime lights to not function properly and my high beam indicator to continuously flicker.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 01 SS. While the car looks amazing in black and turns heads when it's clean, I have to admit that I've had some mediocre moments with it. Unfortunately, every scratch and bug splat shows up quite easily. On the bright side, the 3800 powertrain provides some spirited power, but you do have to be careful when choosing your stoplight drag races, or you might get burned. The worst insult I've experienced was at the hands of a CHRYSLER 300 - ugh! Have you had any similar experiences with your car?

Love my Monte Carlo. This car looks great and is a joy to drive. Although I have had to have the fuel injection system serviced 3 times already, it hasn't dampened my enthusiasm for this car!

  2. Tristin Lowe 2024-11-23

This is an excellent vehicle! Although, I did find the seat belt to be a bit uncomfortable. To solve this issue, I use a simple and affordable 'seat belt adjuster'. Other than that, the car has perfect performance, great mileage, and is a blast to drive! With the current market offering rebates and low financing, it's a great time to buy a car. If I ever decide to trade, I would definitely consider another Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS.

  3. Abdiel Maggio 2024-11-16

I love the looks of the car inside and outside. It still gets looks and compliments. However, I have had major repair problems. At 68,000 miles, the transmission had to be replaced at a price of $2,800. The entire ignition system had to be replaced at a price of $700. The heating thermostat only cost $30.00, but had labor of $300. Lastly, a wheel bearing cost $200. Although, there are some items that do not work properly such as the turn signals that only work when they want to, the steering wheel that has a vibration and now recently the window switch is going out on the driver's side. The driver's side seat heater quit working at about 50,000 miles.

  4. Torrey Auer 2024-11-16

I have thoroughly enjoyed this car for 6 years and would definitely purchase another. The gas mileage is impressive, with 22 mpg in town and an impressive 28 mpg on the road. Although I had to replace the radiator fan unit this past year, I am confident in the overall reliability of this vehicle. While my air conditioner will need to be replaced next year, I am certain that this car will continue to serve me well for years to come.

  5. Gregg Kutch 2024-09-24

This is the first car that I have ever owned that did not have to go back to the dealership for something to be fixed. I have not had any problems with my Monte in over 3 years. I love my dependable car. It's definitely the
