2012 Buick Enclave problems
The Buick Enclave is a three-row full-size crossover SUV produced by General Motors since 2007. It was previewed at the 2006 North American International Auto Show, officially as a concept car, making it the first Lambda vehicle to be displayed. The Enclave is partially based on the Buick Centieme concept shown at the 2003 Detroit Auto Show.
The first-generation Enclave, the Saturn Outlook, the original GMC Acadia, and the first-generation Chevrolet Traverse all shared the GM Lambda platform.
The Enclave replaced both of Buick's SUVs, the minivan-based Rendezvous and the truck-based Rainier, as well as the Terraza minivan. The second-generation Enclave was officially revealed at the 2017 New York International Auto Show.

Common 2012 Buick Enclave problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2012 Buick Enclave, several common problems have been reported:
- Transmission Issues:
- Owners have frequently reported problems with the transmission, including slipping, shuddering, and difficulty shifting gears. This issue can lead to vibrations and clunking noises during acceleration or gear changes. The cost to repair the transmission can range from $1,350 to $2,540 for a rebuilt unit.
- The 2008 model year was particularly problematic in terms of transmission issues, with excessive vibrations and clunking noises reported by owners. Repairs for transmission problems can be as high as $3,500.
- Stretched Timing Chain:
- The timing chain in the 2012 Buick Enclave has been known to stretch prematurely, causing issues with camshaft and crankshaft synchronization. Some owners reported timing chain stretching as early as 40,000 miles, while it typically occurs around 150,000 miles. Repair costs for a stretched timing chain range from $1,700 to $2,050.
- Power Steering Problems:
- Owners have experienced occasional power steering failures in the 2010 Enclave, leading to difficulties in steering the vehicle, especially at higher speeds. The loss of power steering can pose a safety risk, making it challenging to control the SUV effectively.
- Check Engine Light and Electrical System Issues:
- The Buick Enclave has been associated with problems related to the check engine light and the electrical system. These issues can manifest as random shutdowns of the radio, dashboard lights failing to illuminate, and turn signals not functioning correctly. Electrical glitches can impact various components of the vehicle, affecting the overall driving experience.
- Airbag Deployment Concerns:
- Some owners have reported issues with airbag deployment, including a defective airbag warning alert that activates randomly. The "service airbag" reminder may come on unexpectedly, potentially compromising the safety of the driver and passengers in the event of a crash.
- Structural Components and Seat Belt Cable Problems:
- The 2012 Buick Enclave has faced recalls related to structural components, such as failing liftgates and a seat belt cable that can easily break. The flexible steel cable connecting the seat belt to the seat may fail, posing a risk of passenger restraint failure. Additionally, the gas struts holding the liftgate in place can wear prematurely, leading to unexpected gate falls.
These common problems reported by owners highlight various issues with the 2012 Buick Enclave, ranging from mechanical failures like transmission and timing chain issues to safety concerns related to airbag deployment and structural components. Owners are advised to stay vigilant, perform regular maintenance, and address these issues promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of their vehicles.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-15
- VIN: 5GAKVDED5CJ
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: When pulling onto a county road with traffic the transmission kept slipping and the engine would rev higher. It took a lot longer to get up to speed and the cars behind me had to brake quickly.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-01
- VIN: 5GAKVDED4CJ
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Driving along and engine power reduced causing car to slow significantly - like downshifting two gears. Lights / traction control lights came on dash. Errors flashed - "Traction Control Off", "Service Stabilitrak", "Engine Power Reduced" All of this not only caused a slight bit of confusion, but placed us in danger with the flow of traffic. A repair shop replaced the gas pedal, however issue persists. Research indicates the throttle body sensor might be at fault - so we replaced this. Issue persisted, so I spent time online and found a GM TSB indicating a known issue and extending the warranty 10 years or 120K miles for P2138 Code. At this point, this issue persists intermittently, so we do not consider the vehicle safe to drive.

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-07
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 5GAKRCED5CJ
- Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: What does it mean when my car says service StabiliTrak and service traction control? Its main function is indicating that the traction system has been turned off manually to remind you to turn it back on when necessary. However, the StabiliTrak warning light may also signal potential damage to vehicle components that allow the system to work effectively. Loss of Power to Engine, Can't stear, feels like its about to blow up. It seems very usual for the Enclaves, Traverses and Acadias. And I had the same problem out of my 2014 Traverse LTZ
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-16
- VIN: 5GAKRCED3CJ

- Date Of Incident: 2021-02-02
- VIN: 5GAKRDED0CJ
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I purchased this vehicle (used)on 01/12/2021. 5 weeks later the brakes pedal went to the floor. It has done this randomly several times. Usually I can get the car stopped, put it in park and pump the brake pedal a few times and the pedal will be back to normal. When this happens it's usually at a low speed and I can get the car stopped but it takes a while. I have attempted to talk to Gen. Motors at Detroit seeking information as to how can I repair this problem. I got no help from Detroit. My local Buick shop manager tells me it could be any number of things. Maybe a sensor or something in the brake system or a vaccuum problem. I need to know what to do to fix this problem before I get into a wreck.

I never thought I would own a Buick, but I was pleasantly surprised when we found a 2012 Buick Enclave with 3rd row that was perfect for our family. It seats 8 and the rear and 3rd seats are adjustable and folding, which is a big plus. Even with the 3rd row in use, we can still fit suitcases and luggage in the rear cargo space, but we ended up getting a roof rack cargo box for trips. The seats are also relatively easy to lift up to clean under them, which is great when you have kids. Another plus is that it is AWD, which was a must for us living in WI. After a nasty winter, I can say I admire the AWD of my Buick. It handled the snow with ease and I felt safe and in control. The fact that it can actually tow was another big thing for us. We made sure it had a tow package, and it can easily handle a pop-up camper. Despite towing a big gawky camper behind us, we still had a smooth ride. We did not get one that has any extra gadgets on the inside, but I would rate it 9/10 for its practicality and reliability.
-
Great car! It's reliable and comfortable, with plenty of room. It requires minimal maintenance to keep its top-notch performance. I had the vehicle for 12 years and it was a charm. I just decided to trade it in for another.
-
I have been in two accidents, but both were minor incidents. One was a side collision in a Wendy's parking lot, and the other was a rear-end collision that only required a replacement hitch cover and possibly a new bumper.
-
I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying driving your new Buick SUV! It sounds like it's both quick and nimble, as well as stylish and filled with great bells and whistles.

The Enclave, like many cars, is designed to deteriorate over time rather than overuse or mileage. The small white parts can become brittle and break, leading to necessary repairs such as new tires, struts, shocks, motor mounts, and brake booster. Additionally, the transmission is slipping. However, I am confident in my ability to address these issues and ensure the longevity of my vehicle.

After 120k, this vehicle has cost more than it's worth. The transmission needed to be replaced and it squeaks everywhere. It may not be the best choice for long-term usage.

Hello! I recently had an experience with a GM product that left me feeling frustrated. Unfortunately, I had trouble with the technology and customer service. I found it difficult to locate service notices and was unsure about what items were safe to have in the front seat. As a result, I decided to switch to a Lexus. I'm happy to report that I haven't had any issues with my phone, iPad, or laptop interfering with the seatbelt or airbag deployment. On the other hand, in my 2012 Enclave, the seatbelt alarm keeps going off. The dealer provided me with a service notice ID 3120743/ 08-09-41-0071, which explains that any electronic device, audio cords, or large drinks in the front seat will cause the seatbelt alarm to sound. Unfortunately, this is not something that can be repaired. If you want to have a cell phone, iPad, or audio cord in the front seat, you'll need to click the seatbelt. GM Customer Service explained that the vehicle is designed to work this way, but I'm not convinced. It seems to me that the module was inadequately shielded and now they don't want to fix it. Thanks for listening to my experience!
