Buick Enclave problems

The Buick Enclave is a three-row full-size crossover SUV produced by General Motors since 2007. It was previewed at the 2006 North American International Auto Show, officially as a concept car, making it the first Lambda vehicle to be displayed. The Enclave is partially based on the Buick Centieme concept shown at the 2003 Detroit Auto Show.

The first-generation Enclave, the Saturn Outlook, the original GMC Acadia, and the first-generation Chevrolet Traverse all shared the GM Lambda platform.

The Enclave replaced both of Buick's SUVs, the minivan-based Rendezvous and the truck-based Rainier, as well as the Terraza minivan. The second-generation Enclave was officially revealed at the 2017 New York International Auto Show.

  • VIN: 5GAKRBKD1EJ

  • Summary: For the past month, I had been unable to start the vehicle unless I would turn the key without fully starting the vehicle and having to shift to each gear until I would be able to start it. It would start in any gear, but mostly in neutral. Now, on September 25, 2024, I stopped at a shopping center and I was unable to turn the vehicle on at all and it is now stuck in that parking lot. I had not been able to report it because Hurricane Helene hit (September 26, 2024) and we just got power, but phone lines and internet are not stable and cut off in the middle of calls and we have issues uploading documents. I called GM about the issue yesterday and they said because my VIN is not on the recall list that I have to pay for my car to be towed ($89 hook up fee plus $8 per mile) and I have to pay for any repairs. The airbag needs to be replaced as well because it has not been replaced due to the dealership saying they had not received the part and the appointment would be cancelled, so I quit making an appointment to have the driver's side air bag replaced.

Latest negative Buick Enclave car reviews

  1. Edmund Friesen 2025-11-07

    Vehicle year: 2020

I also have a 2019 Buick Enclave with transmission issues. I took it to the dealership after 2000 miles when it started shaking during acceleration. The dealership informed me that it required a new torque converter and that I could continue driving it until the part was available. This was around New Year's, and when I returned to collect the Enclave, the dealer informed me that GM had instructed them to flush the transmission as it had too much lubricant from assembly. We took it home, but it still shuddered, so we called the dealer, and GM advised us to flush it again. Unfortunately, when we picked it up, it was worse than before. So now, six weeks later, we are still waiting for a torque converter that may or may not fix the issue.

  2. Harley Bernier 2025-11-07

    Vehicle year: 2020

The odometer shows less than 7000 miles, but unfortunately there is a coolant leak from the engine cylinder head that requires a replacement part. If you are considering purchasing a BUICK Enclave, it may be helpful to do some research on this issue. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

  3. Isac Gleichner 2025-11-06

    Vehicle year: 2008

It's great to hear that you've been able to keep your vehicle for such a long time! Although it doesn't have all the latest safety features, it still has a nice ride and some decent features. I understand that you've had to invest some money into it, but it's definitely better than having to purchase a new vehicle. It sounds like you've had some issues with various systems over the years, but it's impressive that you've been able to keep it running. I hope that it continues to serve you well!

  4. General Runolfsson 2025-11-02

    Vehicle year: 2009

I have been a proud owner of luxury German cars for over three decades, but when I was living in hilly Maryland, the beauty of the Enclave won me over. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a big and expensive mistake. As other reviewers have mentioned, there were too many issues with such a young vehicle. The plastic outside between the windows bubbled/rippled, the car rolled back while in drive on a hill as if it were in reverse, the car rolled at least 6 inches after putting it in park on flat land, there was a knocking noise when turning the steering wheel either way, and the gas mileage was absolutely abysmal - at the bottom end of the mpg range. The car was also very sluggish on hills, but the deal breaker was the slipping transmission on a 3-year-old car with less than 50k miles. As a result, I decided to go back to BMW after only 10 months.

  5. Koby Ratke 2025-10-27

    Vehicle year: 2022

I purchased a 2020 Buick Enclave Avenir from the dealership last year. Unfortunately, the transmission failed this September, despite the car having only a little over 13000 miles. Although it has been over 30 days since I brought it in for repair, I have not received any updates from the dealership or GM regarding the status of the repair. While I initially fell in love with the car's appearance and performance, I am now eager to have it fixed so that I can trade it. It is clear that the car has reliability issues that need to be addressed.

Latest positive Buick Enclave car reviews

  1. Dedric O'Kon 2025-11-11

    Vehicle year: 2022

The Buick has come a long way! While it used to be known as a grandpa's car, the new generation Buicks are sleek, techy, and luxurious. I recently traded my Honda Pilot for a Buick Enclave, and the sales guy at the dealership was right - the difference between the two is like night and day. The ride, feel, technology, and comfort are all vastly improved.

  2. Forest Schmidt 2025-11-10

    Vehicle year: 2010

You've already put in 2000 miles and it's been very impressive so far! The car has lots of customization and memory features, which is great. It gets above 19mpg with 75% local and 25% freeway driving, which is pretty good. Although it has a slow pick up, it just takes some time to get used to its rate of pickup. Once it picks up speed, it's very smooth and majestic.

  3. Dallas Klocko 2025-11-08

    Vehicle year: 2022

It's a big, quiet, and comfortable car. The only downside is the transmission lever, which can be a bit tricky to use. Personally, I prefer simple push buttons. However, overall, the car performs very well and is a pleasure to drive. The only minor issue is that the gasoline level gauge is off by about 2 gallons.

  4. Gerardo Renner 2025-11-07

    Vehicle year: 2021

(Sep 2022) Hi there! In Aug 2021, I upgraded my car from a 2017 Enclave Premium to a 2021 Enclave Avenir. As I'm getting older, safety features like cameras have become more important to me, and I'm so glad I made the switch. I'm always on the lookout for a good deal, and GM really delivered with their sale on the 2021 model. I was also interested in other cars like the Subaru Ascent, Toyota Highlander, Nissan Pathfinder, and KIA Telluride, but they were all in high demand and at full MSRP plus a premium. Luckily, Buick had cars and deals available! After driving the Avenir for 13 months and 12,000 miles, I can confidently say that it's a great car. I even took it on a 6,700 mile road trip! The front seating is more comfortable, and the air conditioned seats are a nice touch. Plus, the built-in phone charger is so convenient. The camera rearview mirror, front and side cameras, and trailer hitch cameras are all fantastic features that make driving safer and easier. The suspension is smoother and quieter with the magnetic shocks, and the sport mode is a fun addition. The gas mileage is also impressive, at 24-26/highway and 17-19/city. Even though it's a big car, it doesn't feel that way when you're driving it. I did test the updated 2022 Buick Envision Avenir, and while it's nice, it's a lot less car for the same price. The lane-keeping assist works well without being too pushy, which is a big improvement from the 2017 model. The only downside is that the sunroof shade is still flimsy and manually retractable, but since I rarely open the sunroof, it doesn't bother me too much. I would have liked AWD, but unfortunately GM doesn't seem to ship very many AWD equipped cars to the sunbelt. Thanks for reading!

The Enclave Avenir is an exceptional vehicle with a superior ride, quiet and smooth performance, excellent power, and high-quality interior and exterior. The Avenir grill is a much-needed improvement from the old straight waterfall, and the vehicle offers all the room you need. I traded in my 2015 Acura RDX for the Enclave Avenir, and it is by far a better value. The gas mileage difference is negligible. I tried out a Kia Telluride and several other similar SUVs, but I honestly don't understand the hype of the KIA. I'll take the Avenir any day. I have heard consumer reports talk about cheap-looking interior components on GM products, but I disagree. In my opinion, it is a fabrication. I currently also own a Toyota RAV4 as a third vehicle, and neither the Acura nor the RAV4 have any better interior components or fit and finish. Please don't believe everything you hear and make your own informed decision!
