Buick Enclave problems

buick logo

The Buick Enclave is a three-row full-size crossover SUV produced by General Motors since 2007. It was previewed at the 2006 North American International Auto Show, officially as a concept car, making it the first Lambda vehicle to be displayed. The Enclave is partially based on the Buick Centieme concept shown at the 2003 Detroit Auto Show.

The first-generation Enclave, the Saturn Outlook, the original GMC Acadia, and the first-generation Chevrolet Traverse all shared the GM Lambda platform.

The Enclave replaced both of Buick's SUVs, the minivan-based Rendezvous and the truck-based Rainier, as well as the Terraza minivan. The second-generation Enclave was officially revealed at the 2017 New York International Auto Show.

  • VIN: 5GAKRBKD1EJ

  • Summary: For the past month, I had been unable to start the vehicle unless I would turn the key without fully starting the vehicle and having to shift to each gear until I would be able to start it. It would start in any gear, but mostly in neutral. Now, on September 25, 2024, I stopped at a shopping center and I was unable to turn the vehicle on at all and it is now stuck in that parking lot. I had not been able to report it because Hurricane Helene hit (September 26, 2024) and we just got power, but phone lines and internet are not stable and cut off in the middle of calls and we have issues uploading documents. I called GM about the issue yesterday and they said because my VIN is not on the recall list that I have to pay for my car to be towed ($89 hook up fee plus $8 per mile) and I have to pay for any repairs. The airbag needs to be replaced as well because it has not been replaced due to the dealership saying they had not received the part and the appointment would be cancelled, so I quit making an appointment to have the driver's side air bag replaced.

Latest negative Buick Enclave car reviews

  1. Marshall Keeling 2025-05-25

    Vehicle year: 2008

I recently purchased a 2008 Enclave, but unfortunately experienced a slight humming noise at low speed. When I brought it in for evaluation, I was given a quote of over $2000.00 to fix everything. This was surprising to me, as I have owned a Toyota with over 216000 miles and never had to pay that much for repairs. The Buick has less than 60000 miles. I spoke to the service manager at McKinney Buick, but unfortunately they were unable to offer a more competitive price for their repairs. Additionally, they required payment for a loaner car for the week it took them to diagnose the problems. I believe that other repair shops could have diagnosed and fixed the issue in 1-2 days. As someone who has always owned Toyotas, I am reminded of why I value them so highly. If you are looking to save money, I would recommend avoiding GM/Buick.

  2. Steve Kuhic 2025-05-23

    Vehicle year: 2020

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2019 Buick Enclave that I purchased about 3 months ago. This is actually my 3rd Buick Enclave, but unfortunately, I've had some trouble with this one. It has left me stranded twice now and I'm not quite sure what's wrong with it or how to fix it. Do you have any suggestions or advice?

  3. Preston Cartwright 2025-05-22

    Vehicle year: 2010

I purchased the vehicle used and unfortunately experienced some issues shortly after. The power steering pump was making noise and leaking oil, but after three trips to the dealership, the problem was resolved. There was also an air conditioning failure that was fixed, but unfortunately, the same issue occurred a few months later, which was quite costly. Currently, the heater control is not working, and I anticipate that it will also be expensive to fix. Additionally, there is a noisy vibration when accelerating, and the plastic tabs holding the floor mats in place break off easily. It's disappointing to have to deal with these repair costs on a vehicle that is already quite expensive. I'm considering looking for a different brand soon, even though we have enjoyed this car.

  4. Gus Considine 2025-05-21

    Vehicle year: 2010

I bought my car used at 55,000 miles and expected it to be a high-quality, reliable vehicle. Unfortunately, the air conditioning hasn't worked in years and it will cost $1200 to repair with no warranty on dealership work. Additionally, the timing chain had to be replaced at 100k miles, which GM is aware of as a known issue for 2008-2010 models, but they won't recall it. This resulted in a $2400 repair cost. I also had to replace my rear arm bars, with one side being replaced twice, and there were several recalls that cost around $500 to repair. My power steering leaks and is estimated to cost $800 to fix. I've had issues with it not starting at 115k miles, even though it has power. The water pump was replaced and covered at the dealership, along with the rear lift kit and a few other small items that were recalled. Overall, I'm disappointed in GM and won't be buying another one in my lifetime.

  5. Chase Ratke 2025-05-20

    Vehicle year: 2014

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my recent experience with my 2014 Enclave. Despite taking excellent care of it, including getting all recommended services on time and regular oil changes, I was disappointed to learn that my Enclave needs $4,000 of engine repairs at only 50k miles. It turns out that there is a manufacturer defect in the timing chain that has damaged my engine. Unfortunately, it is no longer under warranty. I am feeling frustrated and disappointed with this situation. I would appreciate any advice or suggestions you may have. Thank you for your time.

  1. Maximillian Jones 2025-05-27

    Vehicle year: 2020

We've had our car for 21 months and driven about 20k miles. We're still very happy with it and haven't had any issues. We even receive compliments on it regularly! We highly recommend this car. After 15 months, we were able to defeat the auto stop and now we love the car even more! We've only had one minor warranty item in this time (a plastic latch on the moon roof slider broke), but everything else has been perfect. Overall, we're very happy with our ride. We purchased the 2019 Avenir at the end of January and have had it for about 10 weeks now. We're pleased with most everything, although we absolutely HATE the Auto Stop! Unfortunately, you cannot disable it either temporarily or permanently. However, the ride is smooth, the shifts are seamless, and the car is quiet and spacious with pleasant leather and soft surfaces. Surprisingly, my wife and I like this car better than our previous SUV, the M-B GLE 350. The finish (both interior and exterior) is quite good and our guests even compliment it too!

Hello! It's already April 2023 and I've been driving my 2021 Buick Enclave Essence for two years now without any issues that required servicing. I'm really enjoying the car and I would definitely purchase it again. When I traded in my 2013 Buick Enclave Leather for the 2021 model, I was completely smitten. The car is so plush and it rides like a dream. I looked at and test drove many competitors' cars, but I found the Enclave to be much roomier and more comfortable than the others. I've only had the car for a week, but the gas mileage seems to be comparable to my 2013 model. The salesman told me that the highway mileage will be even better. UPDATE 9/23/21: The only thing I didn't like about my Enclave was the lack of a bypass switch around stop/start. However, after much research, I discovered two methods to turn stop/start off. One is to control the A/C with the passenger side control and turn the driver side control off. This way, the car won't stop running and restart every time it comes to a stop. Another option is to use the paddles to shift gears manually. When starting a drive, shift the gear into gear 9 with the paddles. The car will then use those 9 gears to automatically shift gears and Stop/Start will not activate until the engine is turned off. Then, just repeat the process when the car is restarted. UPDATE: 4/2/22: I'm still enjoying my Enclave. I recently took my car on a trip and got 26.5 miles per gallon on the highway and 23.1 combined mileage with its powerful 6-cylinder engine.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with the new Buick Enclave. Even though I'm not exactly the typical Buick customer being a 22-year-old male, I was lucky enough to rent this car for a week and I have to say, I was really impressed! I drove around 1100 miles during that time and found the Enclave to be incredibly comfortable, with great gas mileage (averaging 25mpg in mixed driving) and impressive performance. I actually have some experience with the 2012 Enclave that my mother used to own, and I can confidently say that the 2019 model is a huge improvement in every aspect. If I ever decide to shop for a newer SUV in the future, I'll definitely be considering a new Buick. Thanks for reading!

I recently took a 450 mile trip over mountains to NY with my Buick Enclave and was pleasantly surprised to get an easy 28mpg, even with two people and lots of luggage. In comparison, I only got 23 MPG in a rented new RAV4 on the same trip last year. When I read reviews that focus on 'interior materials', I become skeptical of the reviewer's expertise. To me, quality is all about galvanized body and stainless steel exhaust, both of which the Buick Enclave has. My 14 year old Buick still looks and drives like new, and I was able to sell it for 3 times its book value. The Enclave's ride is smoother and quieter than the company car BMW X5, making it the perfect road vehicle. With a 121” wheelbase and 4300lb weight, no small SUV can come close to its smooth ride. Plus, I'm getting an impressive 28mpg on the road thanks to the 310hp V6 engine. If you're looking for a roomy, quiet, and smooth riding road car that also gets good mpg, the Enclave is the perfect choice.

The 2021 Buick that I special ordered as front wheel drive took approximately 4 months to come from the factory in the USA. This unit has corrected all the items I did not like about the 2020 Buick Enclaves programming! The other Buick that I own is a 2019 Lacrosse 4dr, which is also a smooth driving unit.
