2016 Buick Enclave problems

The Buick Enclave is a three-row full-size crossover SUV produced by General Motors since 2007. It was previewed at the 2006 North American International Auto Show, officially as a concept car, making it the first Lambda vehicle to be displayed. The Enclave is partially based on the Buick Centieme concept shown at the 2003 Detroit Auto Show.
The first-generation Enclave, the Saturn Outlook, the original GMC Acadia, and the first-generation Chevrolet Traverse all shared the GM Lambda platform.
The Enclave replaced both of Buick's SUVs, the minivan-based Rendezvous and the truck-based Rainier, as well as the Terraza minivan. The second-generation Enclave was officially revealed at the 2017 New York International Auto Show.

Common 2016 Buick Enclave problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Buick Enclave 2016, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:
- Fuse Block Connections Cause Engine Stalls:
- Certain generations of GM vehicles, including the Buick Enclave 2016, have experienced problems with the fuse block that can lead to flickering warning lights and engine stalls. These issues are challenging to diagnose and can result in unexpected engine shutdowns, posing safety risks to drivers.
- Stretched Timing Chain:
- The Buick Enclave 2016 has been reported to suffer from a stretched timing chain. The timing chain is a critical component that synchronizes the camshaft and crankshaft in the engine. When the timing chain stretches, it can disrupt the engine's timing, potentially leading to significant repair costs and engine performance issues.
- Over-Promised Gas Mileage:
- General Motors acknowledged that the estimated gas mileage for certain 2016 SUVs, including the Buick Enclave, was overly optimistic. This discrepancy between actual and estimated fuel efficiency can result in increased fuel costs for owners. To address this issue, GM offered compensation or warranty extensions to affected owners.
- Inaccurate Gas Gauge:
- Owners of the Buick Enclave 2016 have reported problems with the gas gauge, leading to inaccurate readings of fuel levels in the tank. This issue can cause confusion for drivers, especially when the gauge malfunctions when the fuel level is below half a tank. Owners have experienced the gauge sticking or bouncing, making it challenging to monitor fuel levels accurately.

- Summary: In June of 2023 I received a safety recall from GM on my 2016 Buick Enclave concerning a defect in the airbag system. I contacted my local GM dealer and they said the hadn't received the replacement parts yet and that I would be notified when they were available. I checked again in January 2024 and still had no parts. I called again today, July 29, 2024 and received the same answer. I then contacted GM Buick Customer Assistance and was told that the parts were being released in waves to different regions of the country and I would be notified when they were available for my vehicle. It seems to me that their supplier is not placing urgency on manufacturing these parts, which in my opinion is very negligent on their part. Hopefully there have not been any injuries or deaths while waiting to receive repair parts for the vehicles affected by this defect.

This is my third posting. We recently completed a 4987.5 mile trip with the Enclave, from Arizona, to South Carolina, to Florida and back to Arizona. I now have more extended time in the car, and can fine-tune my thoughts. I'm happy to report that the Enclave is a pleasure to drive, with a smooth ride and a feeling of safety and substance. The gas mileage on the highway was also impressive, averaging 26.5MPG for the trip. The sound system is excellent, with the BOSE system and radio providing superb quality. The interior is also very quiet, even at highway speeds, making it a comfortable and enjoyable car to drive. The lane deviation system and blind spot warning are great features, particularly useful on the highway. The forward collision warning system seems like it would be a good feature, although we didn't have the opportunity to test it. The front seats are comfy, supportive and perfect for a long ride. The automatic return to a seat setting was very nice, as were the heated seats and heated steering wheel. Although the navigation system is not particularly intuitive, it was helpful once set correctly. One minor annoyance was that when our iPhone 6+ was connected via USB, the radio automatically defaults to the music on the iPhone and you must manually go through the menu to get back to what was on the radio. Cruise control worked fine, but more than once I inadvertently turned on the heat to the steering wheel rather than engage cruise control. As noted in an earlier post, the middle row of seats could be more comfortable. Overall, I really want to like the car. It is good looking, cruises well, and gets good MPG on the highway. The ride can be a bit harsh in town, getting around 15MPG, and the lines of sight in the rear and sides can be awkward, especially in city driving. Additionally, the rear seat comfort is not the best for a car in this price range. However, we purchased this car at the end of the 2015 model cycle for just over $37K, which was a great deal considering its original MSRP of $47K. It's worth noting that Buick has a fairly decent reliability rating, and the 48-month warranty is definitely a plus. Overall, there are a few areas for improvement, but there are also many great things about this car. If you don't need a lot of rear seat space and opt out of the towing package, it's a safe and stylish choice.
-
This car is larger than most midsize SUVs, making it a great choice for those who need extra space. While the electronics at this trim level may seem intimidating at first, the car is loaded with features that are sure to impress. The only downside so far has been the navigation system, which struggles to understand my southern dialect. However, the creature comforts are impeccable, and the leg room is the best out there, particularly in the second row seating. Even the third row seating is adequate for relatively short trips. The noise levels are on par with most luxury cars, making for a quiet and comfortable ride. While the power is adequate for a vehicle this size, it may not be the best choice for those looking for a high-performance car. The fuel economy is on the low end of the manufacturer's estimate, but still reasonable at about 16 around town and 18 overall. Overall, I really like this car.
-
I can tell you that I absolutely love this car! It has been such a joy to drive and I have been extremely pleased with its performance. I've taken it on a few road trips to Michigan and Florida and it has held up beautifully. Even after 70,000 miles, my tires are still going strong. I've made sure to keep up with all the necessary maintenance, including regular oil changes and tire rotations. I've even been offered the chance to trade it in, but I just can't bring myself to part with it. This vehicle has truly won me over!

I was shopping around for a new car and decided to test drive the Enclave after seeing it on the highway. I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed driving it! I was able to get exactly what I wanted and even received a discount of $7500. The SUV has great acceleration and handles curves with ease. Plus, I'm getting great gas mileage - averaging 23 mpg on the highway and 21 in town. The electronics work well, and while there are a few minor issues, they're not enough to cause any major problems. The sound system is fantastic, and I even got a towing package so I can take weekend trips with a small travel trailer. Overall, I'm completely satisfied with my purchase. The only downside is that the rear seats could be more comfortable for the price. But other than that, I love it!
-
I purchased a fully loaded model in September 2015. As a fairly tall person, leg room was a big concern for me, which limited my options. Although we initially wanted a mid-sized SUV, we ended up with a large SUV because we loved the comfortable seating so much. The ride is exceptional! It is remarkably quiet and smooth, allowing you to spread out and make yourself comfortable. Although the engine is a bit undersized, it works fine for me. However, there aren't enough cup holders up front for such a big car, unlike my old Toyota Seqouia (sp?) which had about 100. The space for storing stuff isn't all that great either. Nevertheless, I added an aftermarket cell phone holder which really helped. We charge our phones from the back USB ports to save on clutter. The interior looks luxurious and the AC seats are great, although I wish they were stronger. My biggest complaint is that the driver's seat has something that pokes me in the thigh and is uncomfortable - I plan on addressing this at my first (complimentary) servicing. The sunroof is small but doesn't blow you away when open, so I ride with it open almost every day. The mileage is terrible, but I knew this before buying it from other reviews. The infotainment system is pretty good, but the favorites could be a little easier to work with. The navigation system is a joke, and voice control is non-existent even after taking it to the dealer to get it fixed. However, this isn't the biggest issue because I trust my cell phone navigation more anyway. Swapping from my phone to my wife's phone via Bluetooth is easy. I plan on not renewing the satellite radio because I can get everything I need from my cell phone at a fraction of the cost. The Bose stereo system is fantastic - it makes me wish I listened to louder music. It needs to have a push-button start; it has everything else, and I can't believe they left this out. The remote start is a nice feature. Safety features like blind spot detection and front collision warning are extremely helpful. The rear backup camera is very helpful, and although I have seen clearer cameras on other vehicles, it still gets the job done. The inside of the car has tons of space and more storage than we commonly use. When buying this car, I suggest speaking with a knowledgeable salesperson who can show you all the features. Overall, I would definitely buy this car again!

I really like my vehicle overall, but I do have some concerns about the seats. Although the leather is nice, they could use some more cushioning to make them more comfortable to sit in. In comparison, my 2017 Ford F150 XLT has much more comfortable seats that I can sit in for hours. I was disappointed to find that even after several years, the seats in my Buick Enclave are still too hard. In fact, our old 2008 Buick Lucerne had much softer and more comfortable seats. It's a shame that Buick has cheapened the quality of their seats. I recently traded in my Enclave for a new Ford Expedition XLT and I am much happier with the interior and overall comfort. We even tried out a new 2020 Enclave, but unfortunately the seats were still uncomfortable.

The ride may not be as comfortable as expected, and hitting a bump can be quite noticeable. Additionally, outside noise and odors may be more noticeable than desired, and there are some blind spots to be aware of. When the back windows are down, the car may vibrate, but opening the front windows can help. It may also be a bit challenging to get in and out of the car due to the 20

Unfortunately, the transmission went out at 58k in 2017 due to a cracked 3-5-R body cover, which left us stranded after what sounded like an explosion while sitting at a stop sign. Currently at 83k miles, the engine revs from 1700 to 3800 before engaging in 2nd gear when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. Additionally, when pulling up to a stop, the transmission will jerk the car hard on the downshift to 1st without notice, which can be alarming. At 35 mph, the engine feels like it is lugging, and the throttle response is delayed. The transmission feels as though it's not sure what to do when gas is applied. Despite these issues, the ride was very smooth and quiet initially, and it remains so on new smooth asphalt. However, on concrete roads, noise is beginning to creep in, and the ride is starting to become noticeably more jittery. This was happening before replacing the tires, and new tires didn't affect the situation either way. The perforated fabric that was put in place to cover the sunroofs is not very effective in the winter, as lots of cold air comes down on everyone. Storage is good with the 3rd row stowed, and entry is easy. However, the driver seat periodically moves up as far as possible, and the seat is slow to move back to its original position. If you press the button to move the seat all the way back for the driver to exit the vehicle, the 2nd row passengers may have a difficult time getting out if anyone is in the 3rd row. I wear a size 12 shoe and have had it get stuck between the driver seat corner and driver kick-panel, so I have to make sure my toe or heel goes out past the seat first. The navigation system likes to change the view as you are driving down an open road. It might be on full screen when you set it up, then it's in half-screen mode with the radio station showing up on the right-hand side and the map on the left-hand side. After a while, it may change to a different view or just stay the same. The front air dam under the bumper is too low and may hit when pulling into a parking place with a curb. It can be difficult to tell if the black plastic piece has contacted anything when pulling in, but you can hear it flip over and drag off the concrete when backing out. To avoid this, it's best to park without getting too close to a curb or concrete wheel stop. The seats feel like sitting on a cinder block, very flat and with no contour or support. The Enclave's body lean is pretty noticeable on twisting roads. Some days the engine feels gutless, while other days it's normal, but it's not the strongest of engines. At 65 mph into a head or crosswind, expect 18.5 to 19 mpg, while in-town driving is 14-14.5 mpg. We have two grandchildren who ride with us every day, one in a car seat and the other in a booster seat. Anyone trying to get into the third row with child seats in place is in for a challenge. The seatbelts in the middle row lean into the passenger's hip when buckled, and fastening the seatbelts with a car seat in place causes you to pull the car seat toward the door to make clearance for the buckle to line up properly. Then, with the child in the seat, you have to push the seat into a level riding position. I would not consider buying another Enclave.

Although my car has 63000 miles, I have had to replace the seat bases in the driver and passenger seat twice, as well as the tires due to air leakage. Additionally, I have had to address an evaporative leak, traction control error, engine coil replacement, and spark plug replacement. Currently, the steering gear requires replacement for $1900+. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in the quality of this car. While some Buick owners have reported similar steering issues, I believe that this car is still a great choice for those seeking a luxury vehicle. I recommend purchasing an extended warranty for added peace of mind.

The transmission failed at 56,000 miles. It is reasonable to expect a car to last longer than a year and a half, especially when making such a significant investment. I recommend considering a more dependable vehicle.
