1994 Isuzu Trooper problems

isuzu logo

The Isuzu Trooper is a full-size SUV that was produced by the Japanese automaker Isuzu between September 1981 and September 2002. In the domestic Japanese market it was sold as the Isuzu Bighorn, the car was exported internationally mainly as a Trooper but it also received several other nameplates including Acura SLX, Chevrolet Trooper, Subaru Bighorn, SsangYong Korando Family, Honda Horizon, Opel Monterey, Vauxhall Monterey, Holden Jackaroo, and Holden Monterey.

In total, there were two generations of this vehicle: the first, produced between 1981 and 1991; and the second (UBS) produced between 1991 and 2002, with a substantial refresh in 1998.

The Trooper began as a rather basic and somewhat underpowered on- and off-road vehicle, offered only with four-cylinder motor, four-speed manual transmission, and part-time four-wheel drive. The first generation evolved to add both amenities and luxuries, including optional air-conditioning, power windows, and a more powerful V6 engine. The second generation was even more refined and available in two-wheel drive as well as four-wheel drive.

Common 1994 Isuzu Trooper problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 1994 Isuzu Trooper, common problems with this vehicle include:

  • Engine Oil Light Illuminated: Some owners have experienced the engine oil warning light coming on due to a leak in the differential, typically occurring around 55,000 miles. Replacing the differential is necessary to resolve this issue.
  • Excessive Fuel Use and Starting Problems: Increased fuel consumption and starting difficulties may indicate a failing fuel pump. Replacing the fuel pump is recommended, with online guides available for assistance.
  • Rough Idling: Rough idling in the Trooper is often linked to a damaged intake manifold gasket. Replacing the gasket is a relatively straightforward fix.
  • Ticking From Valve Train: A ticking sound from the engine valve train area could be due to varnish build-up in the hydraulic lash adjusters. Using higher quality oil can help resolve this issue.
  • Oil Leak: Oil leaks, commonly caused by a faulty front crankshaft oil seal, can be addressed by replacing the seal with a revised design available from Breakeryard.
  • Rattling From Front of the Car: Troopers are prone to timing chain tensioner issues, leading to a rattling sound from the front of the car. Replacing the tensioner is necessary to eliminate the rattle.
  • Loss of Power and Check Engine Light: A loss of power accompanied by the check engine light may indicate a failing catalytic converter. Replacement of the catalytic converter is the recommended solution.
  • 4WD Indicator Malfunction: If the 4WD indicator remains on when in 2WD mode, faulty vacuum hoses, solenoids, or engine valves may need replacement to rectify the issue.
  • Differential Leaks: Oil weeping or leaking from between the two rear wheels due to a leaking differential requires replacing the differential to stop the leak.

These common problems with the 1994 Isuzu Trooper highlight various issues owners have faced, ranging from fuel system problems to oil leaks and power loss issues.

1994 Isuzu Trooper engine

What is the gas mileage on a 1994 Isuzu Trooper?

It burns an occasional quart of oil and gets a combined 16 mpg. The 3.5L V6 engine has enough pep to zip along on the highway and can be shifted into ultra low gear off road.

What transmission is in a 1994 Isuzu Trooper?

In mid-1994, Subaru discontinued further sales since the OEM contract signed by Subaru and Isuzu was expiring. The only model available was the "Handling by Lotus", with either a four-speed automatic transmission or a five-speed manual (turbodiesel only).

Why did Isuzu stop making the Trooper?

SUV market changes and safety concerns doomed the Trooper

Unfortunately for Isuzu, mid-size classics like the Honda CRV and Toyota Rav-4 essentially cornered that market before they could find footing with their oddly conceived Vehicross and other compact models.

What engine is in a 1990 Isuzu Trooper?

The 2.8-liter, 60 degree V6 engine features a cast iron block and cylinder heads, durable five main bearing crankshaft, throttle body fuel injection and transistorized ignition system. Weighing only slightly more than Isuzu's 2.6-liter four cylinder, the V6 motor develops 120 horsepower and 150 ft/lbs.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 1995-02-22
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: TOTALED.
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: 22 YEARS AGO, ON FEB. 22, 1995 I WAS DRIVING DOWN SILVERADO CANYON RD., WHICH IS A VERY CURVY 2 LANE ROAD. AFTER A CURVE I SAW 2 CARS DRIVING TOWARDS ME, ONE PASSING THE OTHER, COMING TOWARDS ME IN MY LANE. I DID THE ONLY THING I COULD AND MOVED ~5-7 FEET TOWARDS THE RIGHT AND FLIPPED OVER IN A COUNTER-CLOCKWISE DIRECTION. MY TRUCK DID NOT HAVE TAKATA AIRBAGS (SO THEY TOLD ME) BUT MY AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. WHEN I TOLD THIS TO THE ISUZU SPOKESPERSON (2-3 YRS LATER) HE TOLD ME THAT NO CAR'S AIRBAGS DEPLOY IN ROLLOVERS BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT PROGRAMMED TO DO SO. WHEN I ASKED WHY HE SAID THAT IN STUDIES THAT WERE DONE THERE WASN'T ANY INCREASE IN SURVIVAL IN ROLLOVERS EITHER WITH OR WITHOUT DEPLOYMENT OF AIRBAGS. CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW I FELT. WHAT ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO DO SURVIVE? WHAT ABOUT ME AND EVERYONE ELSE IN A LEFT HANDED (COUNTERCLOCKWISE) ROLL. I KNOW BECAUSE I WAS IN A CLOCKWISE ROLL TOO AND MY HEAD STAYED STRAIGHT UP AND I SURVIVED BETTER. IN A LEFT ROLL THE DRIVER'S HEAD HITS THE WINDOW AND THEY OFTEN DON'T SURVIVE. IF THEY DO THEY WILL HAVE A SEVERE TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY AND ARE USUALLY DISABLED FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES. I WAS IN A COMA FOR TWO WEEKS AND SPENT TWO YEARS IN NEUROREHABILITATION. I WISH I WAS ABLE TO WRITE THIS TO YOU MUCH SOONER BUT PLEASE WHEN THE NEW AIRBAGS COME IN, MAKE SURE THEY DEPLOY IN ROLLOVERS TOO. I HOPE THIS LETTER MAKES UP FOR THE PEOPLE WHO DIED IN ROLLOVERS IN THE PAST TWENTY YEARS. YOU SEE I'M A MEDICAL DOCTOR WHO HOPES TO SEE SOME GOOD COME OUT OF MY SURVIVING THAT TERRIBLE CAR ACCIDENT. EVEN MY INSURANCE, STATE FARM SAID I WAS IN A SINGLE CAR ACCIDENT WHEN I SAW WHITE AND RED PAINT ON THE LEFT SIDE OF MY GREEN ISUZU TROOPER. I WISH I COULD HAVE WRITTEN THIS SOONER BUT I HAVE MANY LONG TERM MALADIES THAT CAUSED ME TO KEEP FORGETTING. MAYBE GOD REMINDED ME TO WRITE WHEN THE TAKATA RECALL WAS GOING ON. THEY'RE IN MILLIONS OF CAR

THEY ADMITTED THAT IT HAD BEEN WORKING PERFECTLY AND HAD JUST "STOPPED" WORKING WHILE THEY WERE MOVING IT AROUND AND RUNNING IT THROUGH THE WASH. I EXPLAINED THAT EVERYTHING HAD BEEN WORKING PERFECTLY WHEN I BROUGHT IT IN AND THEY AGREED TO REPLACE THE STARTER WITH A REBUILT FOR NO CHARGE. THEY DID SO AND I PICKED UP THE CAR. IMMEDIATELY UPON LEAVING THE DEALERSHIP I CALLED THEM AND TOLD THEM THAT THE MOTOR WAS NOT RUNNING RIGHT. THEY ASKED THAT I CONTINUE TO DRIVE IT FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS BECAUSE THE "COMPUTER WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM". I CONTINUED TO DO SO AND THE NEXT DAY IT WAS HOT SO I TRIED THE AIR CONDIIONER AND IT MADE GRINDING NOISES. I CALLED THEM AGAIN AND BROUGHT IT IN AGAIN AND THEY SAID THAT IT MUST HAVE JUST GONE OUT, AT THE SAME TIME AS THE STARTER WHILE IT WAS IN THEIR POSSESSION. THEY SAID THAT IT WOULD COST ME $1100.00 TO REPLACE THE COMPRESSOR, WHICH I STATE ONCE AGAIN WAS WORKING PERFECTLY WHEN I BROUGHT IT IN. THEY DID SOMETHING TO RUIN MY AIR CONDITIONER AND NOW EXPECT ME TO PAY FOR IT!!! PLEASE HELP SHARRON . *AK

Negative 1994 Isuzu Trooper car reviews

  1. Lance Reynolds 2024-08-02

I received this vehicle from a friend. Although it has a lot of space and comfortable seats, I would not recommend it due to some issues. The steering has a large turning radius, and there may be power steering problems. The engine (3.2 v6) struggles and sounds unpleasant, and it revs high on the highway, leading to poor fuel consumption. Additionally, there have been alarm problems. Overall, it may not be the best choice. Personally, I would prefer an American SUV, such as a Ford Explorer or Jeep Cherokee. However, please keep in mind that this is just my opinion and experience with this vehicle.

  2. Guillermo Rippin 2024-07-26

My experience with the Trooper has been exceptional. I have owned three of them and each one has been of superb quality, with fit and finish second to none. Despite having driven my Trooper pretty hard, it has clocked 136,000 miles and still has no squeaks or rattles. Although the 175 hp V6 engine is not powerful enough for my needs, I have been able to tow a tall, wide snowmobile trailer that weighs only 1,200 lbs. However, I have to leave it in '3' and let the engine rev over 3000 rpm to maintain speed when going into the wind. Overall, I highly recommend this vehicle. It has good compression and oil pressure, but it is thirsty for oil, especially when towing. Therefore, it is important to keep checking your high mileage Trooper's oil level!

  3. Braulio Monahan 2024-06-23

This would normally be a great vehicle, but unfortunately, I have had a horrible experience with the transmission 'fail-safe' system. The system causes the car to involuntarily go into third (?) gear and must be re-set by turning off the engine. I have already had one transmission ruined and the dealership still cannot correct the problem. However, despite this issue, I believe that this vehicle has great potential.

Positive 1994 Isuzu Trooper car reviews

  1. Matt Moore 2025-01-07

Hi there! I'm happy to hear that you've had such a great experience with your SUV. It's impressive that you've been able to drive it for over 205,000 miles with mostly original parts! The only replacements you've had to make were the timing belt at 100,000 miles and the starter due to an autostart problem with your alarm system. You also mentioned replacing the alternator at 115,000 miles, but other than that, it's still running strong! It's amazing that you're able to haul your 25ft boat (5835lbs) with no problem. After ten years of consistent performance, it's clear that your SUV is a reliable and powerful vehicle. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

  2. Gus Mueller 2024-11-24

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this amazing truck that I bought three years ago. It had just under 100,000 miles on it and I haven't had to spend a single penny on repairs since then. Even at 140,000 miles, it still starts on the first crank! It's been a lifesaver for me and my band, as it has tons of room for all our equipment and is great for long trips. I must admit, it's not the most fuel-efficient truck out there, averaging around 17-19 MPG, but it can go ANYWHERE, ANYTIME! Plus, it's super easy to work on if you need to. All in all, I absolutely love this truck and would highly recommend it to anyone in need of a reliable and spacious vehicle.

  3. Ariel Moen 2024-10-26

Other than the transmission, which I fixed twice at 110000 and then at 115000, this has been one of the best cars I've owned. I would buy another one. By the way, the best 4x4 I've ever owned was a 1987 Ford Bronco II. The engine went at 160000. It was a great size for off-road and had good ground clearance.

  4. Robbie Little 2024-10-15

I bought my Trooper new back in 1994 and it has been an absolute pleasure owning this SUV. It has given me zero problems and all I have ever had to do was change the oil and tune it up. I have never had to do a brake job and every time I took it in for a brake checkup, mechanics have told me that the rotors and pads are in good shape - amazing!
