1999 Plymouth Neon problems
The Neon is a compact car that was built from in January 1994 until 2005 by the American Chrysler Corporation over two generations. It has a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and came in two-door and four-door sedan body styles. In the United States it was sold as either a Dodge or a Plymouth, while in Europe, Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Egypt, Australia, South Africa, and South America it was branded as a Chrysler, the Neon was offered in multiple versions and configurations over its production life, which lasted from the 1995 model year until 2005. The Neon nameplate was subsequently resurrected in 2016 for the Dodge Neon, a rebadged variant of Fiat Tipo sedan for the Mexican market.
1991 concept car
The Neon nameplate first appeared as a concept car in 1991 under the Dodge brand. Although radically styled and clearly not production-ready featuring sliding suicide doors, the Neon concept resembled the future production vehicle.
The Neon concept was designed by Chrysler designers who had joined the company from Chrysler's buyout of American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987.

Common 1999 Plymouth Neon problems
The Plymouth Neon, produced from 1994 to 2001, is known for several common problems, particularly with its engine, transmission, and electrical systems.
Engine Problems
The 1994-1996 models of the Plymouth Neon were equipped with a 2.0-liter engine that had issues with oil consumption and power loss. This engine tended to burn oil, which could lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly. Additionally, some drivers reported a loss of power, particularly at higher speeds, which could be caused by a clogged air filter or a failing fuel pump.
The 1997-1999 models of the Plymouth Neon were also equipped with a 2.0-liter engine, which had some notable issues, including oil consumption and engine misfires. One of the most common issues with this engine was its tendency to burn oil, which could lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly. Additionally, some drivers reported engine misfires, which could be caused by a variety of factors, including faulty spark plugs or ignition coils.
Transmission Problems
The automatic transmission in the Plymouth Neon was known to have issues with shifting and would often slip between gears. The manual transmission was also prone to issues, particularly with the clutch, which could wear out quickly and require frequent replacement.
Electrical Problems
Drivers of the Plymouth Neon reported issues with the alternator, which could fail and cause the battery to drain quickly. The starter was another component that was prone to failure, particularly in colder climates.
Suspension and Steering Problems
The suspension and steering components of the Plymouth Neon were known to wear out quickly. Drivers reported issues with tie rod ends and ball joints, which could cause the vehicle to drift or pull to one side. Additionally, the steering rack was prone to failure, which could make the vehicle difficult to steer and control.
Preventing Common Issues in the Plymouth Neon
To prevent common issues in the Plymouth Neon, it's recommended that drivers regularly check the engine oil level and replace the oil filter as recommended by the manufacturer. Additionally, it's important to keep the air filter clean and replace it as needed. Regularly checking the transmission fluid level and replacing it as recommended can also help prevent transmission problems.
When it comes to electrical issues, it's important to regularly check the battery and replace it as needed. Additionally, drivers should check the alternator and starter regularly to ensure they are functioning properly.
For suspension and steering issues, it's recommended that drivers regularly inspect the tie rod ends, ball joints, and steering rack for wear and replace them as needed.
By following these simple maintenance tips, drivers can help prevent common issues in the Plymouth Neon and keep their vehicle running smoothly for years to come.

- Summary: I WAS TRAVELLING EASTBOUND ON THE LONG ISLAND EXPRESSWAY APPROACHING EXIT 57 WHEN I STARTED TO HEAR A NOISE FROM UNDERNEATH MY VEHICLE, A 1999 PLMOUTH GRAND VOYAGER. I FIRST THOUGHT IT WAS THE MUFFLER AND CONTINUED DRIVING. SHORTLY AFTERWARDS, I NOTICED DEBRIS AND BLACK SMOKE IN THE RIGHT SIDE MIRROR. I WAS NOW BETWEEN EXITS 57 AND 58. I PULLED OVER TO THE SHOULDER. WHEN I GOT OUT I EXAMINED THE MUFFLER FIRST. IT WAS FINE. I THEN WALKED AROUND TO THE REAR RIGHT SIDE AND SAW THAT THE REAR RIGHT TIRE WAS COMPLETELY DAMAGED. THE TREAD WAS SEPARATED FRON THE REST OF THE TIRE. THE TIRE RIM WAS NOT BENT PROBABLY DUE TO THE COMBINATION OF WHEN I PULLED OVER PLUS THE FACT THAT THE SEPARATED TREAD WAS WRAPPED AROUND IT. I CALLED AAA AND HAD THE TIRE CHANGED. MY WIFE AND TWO OF MY GRANDDAUGHTERS WERE IN THE CAR WITH ME. WE ARE LUCKY THAT IT WAS NOT A FRONT TIRE. THE TIRE IS A GOODYEAR REGATTA II THAT WAS PURCHASED AS ONE OF A NEW SET OF FOUR ON MARCH 27, 2003. I HAVE PUT JUST UNDER 30,000 MILES ON THEM. THEY ARE WARANTEED FOR 75,000 MILES. SINCE I DID PURCHASE ROAD HAZARD INSURANCE I PLAN ON RETURNING THE TIRE TO WHERE I PURCHASED IT: GOODYEAR AUTO SERVICE CENTER, 1200 ROUTE 112 , PORT JEFFERSON STATION, 11776 AND GETTING A REPLACEMENT.
