The Jaguar XJ is a series of mid-size/full-size luxury cars produced by British automobile manufacturer Jaguar Cars (becoming Jaguar Land Rover in 2013) from 1968 to 2019. It was produced across five basic platform generations (debuting in 1968, 1986, 1994, 2003, and 2009) with various updated derivatives of each. From 1970, it was Jaguar's flagship four-door model. The original model was the last Jaguar saloon to have been designed under the leadership of Sir William Lyons, the company's founder, and the model has been featured in countless media and high-profile appearances.

Series 1, 2, and 3 (1968–1992)

Overview

The first generation Jaguar XJ was produced for a total period of 24 years, with two major facelifts – in 1973 and in 1979, with a raised front bumper and less tall grilles.

For four years, the 1968 introduced XJ was always a four-door, straight-six saloon on a 2.76 m (108.75 in) wheelbase. In 1972, a more spacious, 4-inch (10 cm) longer wheelbase (LWB) option, and a 5.3 litre V12 engine were added. On the XJ series II (from 1973), the standard wheelbase (SWB) saloons were cancelled in 1974 – but a SWB two-door (series II only) coupé was sold from 1975–1978.

The 1979 series III saloons received a redesigned greenhouse (upper body) and bumpers. The 6-cylinder series III models were replaced by the second generation Jaguar XJ in 1987, but the V12 models not until 1992.

Common 1988 Jaguar Xj6 problems

The 1988 Jaguar XJ6 is known for several common problems that Jaguar owners have reported over the years. One of the most frequently mentioned issues is related to the self-leveling hydraulic suspension system. This system is prone to failure, and diagnosing the issue can be challenging. Additionally, refilling the hydraulic fluid is not a straightforward task, which adds to the complexity of addressing this problem.

Another common issue with the 1988 Jaguar XJ6 is related to the front wheel bearings, which may be shot or the wheel may be out of balance/alignment. This can result in a rough ride, especially when driving at high speeds. The front driverside wheel bearings are particularly susceptible to this issue, and replacing them can be a time-consuming and costly process.

The 1988 Jaguar XJ6 also has problems with the electrical system, specifically with the circuitry that controls the taillights and turn signals. The Circuit 1 Failure and Bulb Failure notifications on the VCM are indicative of this issue. In some cases, the electrical repair performed by mechanics may not hold, and the issue may reoccur, necessitating further repairs.

The 1988 Jaguar XJ6 is also known for problems with the fueling system, with the VCM displaying a Fueling Failure notification intermittently. This issue can affect the car's performance and fuel efficiency, making it essential to address it promptly.

The car's ride is reported to be softer than expected, which can be attributed to issues with the suspension system or the tires. The XJ6's suspension system is designed to provide a smooth ride, but if it is not functioning correctly, it can result in a softer ride than intended.

Water leaks in the driver and passenger seat are another common problem with the 1988 Jaguar XJ6, which can be particularly problematic during rainy weather. This issue can affect the car's interior, causing damage to the upholstery and electrical components.

The A/C system in the 1988 Jaguar XJ6 is also prone to issues, with the A/C blowing cold air intermittently and not always when it is needed. This can be a significant inconvenience, especially during hot weather.

The electrical system in the 1988 Jaguar XJ6 is known to have issues with the window controls, which may require aggressive pushing to get them to work properly. This can be a significant inconvenience, especially during daily use.

The rear passenger door of the 1988 Jaguar XJ6 is also known to have issues, with some owners reporting that it refuses to open. This can be a significant inconvenience, especially when transporting passengers.

The rear speaker in the 1988 Jaguar XJ6 is also prone to issues, with some owners reporting that it has blown out and is not functioning properly. This can affect the car's audio system, making it essential to address the issue promptly.

In summary, the 1988 Jaguar XJ6 is known for several common problems, including issues with the self-leveling hydraulic suspension system, front wheel bearings, electrical system, fueling system, ride quality, water leaks, A/C system, window controls, rear passenger door, and rear speaker. These issues can affect the car's performance, comfort, and safety, making it essential to address them promptly.

1988 Jaguar Xj6 engine

What engine is in a 1988 Jaguar XJ6?

Under the hood, the 1988 Jaguar XJ6 was powered by a robust 4.2-liter inline-six engine that delivered smooth acceleration and a top speed that could reach up to approximately 119 mph.

What problems did the Jaguar XJ have?

Water pumps on 5.0 V8 and 3.0 Supercharged XJ models are prone to failure, sometimes they can fail in less than 20,000 miles. This is because coolant gets inside the bearing housing corroding the water pump bearing.

What engine is in Jaguar XJ6?

The XJ6, using the 2.8-litre (2,792 cc (170.4 cu in)) and 4.2-litre (4,235 cc (258.4 cu in)) straight-six cylinder versions of Jaguar's renowned XK engine, replaced most of Jaguar's saloons – which, in the 1960s, had expanded to four separate ranges.

How fast is a Jaguar XJ6?

140 mph

When the 5.3-liter V-12 arrived in 1972, it provided 253 hp for 140 mph and 0–60 in 7.4 seconds, making the XJ the fastest four-seat sedan in the world. In 1973, Jaguar updated the XJ6 as the Series 2, with a slimmer grille and revised dash.
