1996 Chrysler Lhs problems

The Chrysler LHS is a full-size luxury four-door sedan that was produced by Chrysler for the 1994 through the 2001 model years, with a one-year hiatus for 1998. It replaced the Chrysler Imperial and the Chrysler Fifth Avenue as the division's flagship model. The LHS was rebadged as the Concorde Limited for the 2002 model year.

First generation (1994–1997)

Introduced in May 1993 for the 1994 model year, the Chrysler LHS was the top of the line model for the division, as well as the most expensive of the Chrysler LH platform cars. All the LH-series models shared a 113.0-inch (2,870 mm) wheelbase and were developed using Chrysler's new computer drafting system.

The car was differentiated from the division's New Yorker sedan by its bucket leather seats (the New Yorker had a bench seat) and standard features such as alloy wheels that were options on the New Yorker. Further differences between the Chrysler LHS and its New Yorker counterpart were a floor console and shifter, five-passenger seating, lack of chrome trim, an upgraded interior, and a sportier image. From the 1996 model year on the New Yorker was dropped in favor of a six-passenger option on the LHS. The LHS received a minor face change in 1995 when the corporate-wide Pentastar emblem was replaced with the revived Chrysler brand emblem.

Standard features of the LHS included a 3.5 L EGE 24-valve 214 hp (160 kW; 217 PS) V6 engine, body-colored grille, side mirrors and trim, traction control, aluminum wheels, integrated fog lights, 8-way power-adjustable front seats, premium sound systems with amplifiers, and automatic temperature control. Unlike the New Yorker, leather seats were standard.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-07-10
  • VIN: 2C3HC56F7TH
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I'D PARKED MY 1996 CHRYSLER LHS IN A PARKING LOT FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS ON 7/10/2005. THE VEHICLE HAS 95K MILES ON IT. AS I RETURNED, AND BACKED THE VEHICLE UP TO EXIT THE SPACE, I HEARD A LOUD "POP". SUDDENLY THE CAR NO LONGER RESPONDED TO STEERING. UPON EXAMINATION, I FOUND THE INNER TIE ROD BOLTS HAD SHEARED OFF WHERE THEY CONNECTED TO THE STEERING GEAR. BOTH BOLTS HAD SHEARED OFF AT THE SAME LENGTH, AND THE RETAINING PLATE WAS STILL IN PLACE, PREVENTING THE BOLTS FROM LOOSENING/ROTATING. IF THIS HAD OCCURED WHILE I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY, I'D BE DEAD. I HAVEN'T HAD IT REPAIRED YET, BUT I'VE KEPT THE OLD TIE ROD BOLTS. I DON'T KNOW HOW EASY I CAN GET OUT THE SHEARED ENDS FROM THE STEERING GEAR, BUT I WOULD SUSPECT IT WON'T BE IN GOOD SHAPE WHEN I FINISH.

Negative 1996 Chrysler Lhs car reviews

  1. Jimmy Frami 2024-10-05

This is a gorgeous, stylish, roomy, and comfortable vehicle that is sure to turn heads. However, I have experienced some issues with it in the past 6 months, including problems with the A/C compressor, compression failure in injector #1, a failed driver's side window motor, excessive wear on the tie rods and inner bushings (even though the rack was replaced just 1.5 years ago), and excess distortion in the rear brake rotors (which could have been prevented with higher-end brakes). Despite these issues, I still enjoy riding in it and would recommend it to others.

  2. Adonis Hauck 2024-10-04

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with my car, which I purchased as a left-over and have driven for over 125K miles. Overall, I have enjoyed owning this car. I have had a few repairs over the years, including the front suspension clunking at 3000 miles (which was covered by warranty), the Infinity CD player quitting around 40K miles (which the company would not fix or replace, but the dealer suggested buying a new CD player), and the AC needing repair twice. Unfortunately, the front end clunking started again at 80K miles and the wiring harness melted at 120K miles, which was a costly repair for a car that is worth $2000. Currently, the transmission is not functioning properly and I am not willing to pay the $3000 repair cost. Despite these issues, I still have positive feelings towards my car and the memories we have shared together.

  3. Judah Stroman 2024-10-03

One major complaint about the car is that it has a lot of road noise. However, the car rides nice, is comfortable and roomy. Unfortunately, there were numerous mechanical failures during the first 90K miles, including front end, air conditioner, and headlight switch problems, to name a few.

  4. Winfield Daugherty 2024-07-07

This is a big, safe, and comfortable car that is also surprisingly fun to drive. It rides smoothly on the highway, which is primarily what I use it for. Unfortunately, the timing belt tensioner broke off at 93,000 miles, but after a couple of weeks and a Chrysler remanufactured motor, it's all good. Although I don't think the motor should have gone at 93,000 miles, the car has been trouble-free otherwise. I would highly recommend it to anyone who needs a big car.

  5. Noe Huels 2024-04-02

This car has good performance and is comfortable to drive. However, there have been some mechanical issues with it. Unfortunately, a frost plug on the engine started to leak and it was discovered that the transmission had to be dropped to fix it. Despite my attempts to seek compensation from Chrysler, they informed me that it was out of warranty. Due to these experiences, I have decided that this will be the last Chrysler product I will purchase.

Positive 1996 Chrysler Lhs car reviews

  1. Bryon Schaden 2025-01-06

OK, you had to replace the AC Condenser and deal with a spell of running rough, but you've put over 150K miles on it since you bought it. Now it's right at 200K miles. The total repair cost has been around $2K, which is not bad considering the mileage. It still has lots of power and even your 16-year-old son loves to drive it.

  2. Domenic Lind 2024-11-19

This car is a comfortable, reliable car. It can't be beat for comfort on long trips. The seats are great and there is spacious room in the passenger compartment. The trunk space is more than adequate for a long trip.

  3. Alexys Kuhic 2024-10-09

This car is really comfortable and fuel-efficient, which is impressive for a large car or even a smaller one. I've driven it for a ton of miles and I couldn't be happier with it. I'll definitely consider getting another Chrysler in the future.

  4. Humberto Streich 2024-08-28

Overall, this car has some great features, but unfortunately, it has had some reliability issues. The ride is smooth, and the interior and trunk are spacious. It handles well both at speed and in parking lots. However, the small rear window can make backing up a bit challenging. Unfortunately, some reliability problems started to arise at 60K miles, including issues with the water pump, air conditioner, steering rack, undercarriage bushings, cruise control, and tie rods. Despite these issues, the car's performance and mileage have remained consistent, with around 22-24 MPG around town and 27-30 on the road.

  5. Lew Smitham 2024-08-12

Smooth to drive! However, it is important to note that the front suspension may wear out over time, requiring ball joints, struts, and bushings.
