2008 Mitsubishi Lancer problems
The Mitsubishi Lancer is an automobile produced by the Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors since 1973.
The Lancer has been marketed as the Colt Lancer, Dodge Colt, Plymouth Colt, Chrysler Valiant Lancer, Chrysler Lancer, Eagle Summit, Hindustan Lancer, Soueast Lioncel, and Mitsubishi Mirage in various countries at different times, and has been sold as the Mitsubishi Galant Fortis in Japan since 2007. It has also been sold as Mitsubishi Lancer Fortis in Taiwan with a different facelift than the Galant Fortis. In Japan, it was sold at a specific retail chain called Car Plaza.
Between its introduction in 1973 and 2008, over six million units were sold. There have been ten generations of Lancers.
Mitsubishi ended production of the Lancer in August 2017 worldwide, with the exception of Taiwan and China. An extensive facelift was given to the car by Pininfarina's Chinese offices.

Common 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer problems
The Mitsubishi Lancer 2008 is known for several common problems that have been reported by owners. Here are the details of these issues:
- Pulling to the Left: This issue seems to be more prevalent in the GTS model, with several owners reporting an aggressive pull to the left while driving. This could be due to tire or alignment issues, but it is not clear if this is a widespread problem affecting a significant number of 2008 Lancers or if it is limited to specific instances.
- Radio Reception: The 2008 Lancer has been reported to have poor radio reception, affecting many owners. The poor reception could be due to issues with the headunit or the antenna, but the specific cause is not mentioned.
- Window Scratching: The pads that hold the window in place can be scratchy, causing small scratches on the windows after lowering or raising them. This issue is particularly problematic for owners who have tinted windows, as the scratchy guards can destroy the tint.
- Inaccurate Speedometer: Some 2008 Lancer owners have reported that their speedometers read faster than their actual speed. This issue might not be widespread, as some owners have mentioned that their speedometers are accurate.
- Engine Stalling: The engine in the 2008 Lancer has been reported to stall regularly, with the main culprit being a faulty MAP sensor. A clogged throttle body could also contribute to this problem.
- Automatic Gearbox Problems: The automatic gearboxes in the 2008 Lancer are known for having issues with changing gears, including hesitant changes and gear slipping. These issues might require a replacement gearbox, as they are sealed units.
- Rust Issues: Some Japanese import versions of the 2008 Lancer may have a higher risk of attracting rust when used in Europe, due to the absence of precautions taken in Japan to prevent rust. Regular checks and maintenance are recommended to prevent or address rust issues.
- Check Engine Light and 'Slow Down' Warning: In some cases, the check engine light may illuminate, accompanied by a 'Slow Down' warning, despite the car appearing to function normally . This issue may affect specific models, and the root cause is not explicitly mentioned in the search results.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SEAT BELTS,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

- Crash: 1
- VIN: JA3AU86U68U

- Summary: MY SRS LIGHT JUST STARTED COMING ON A FEW YEARS AGO BEFORE WE WERE IN AN ACCIDENT. WHEN WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER TO CHECK IT, THEY SAID IT WAS A COSTLY REPAIR AND IS ONLY TO REMOVE THE LIGHT...BUT THAT THE AIRBAGS WOULD STILL DEPLOY IF WE WERE IN AN ACCIDENT. SINCE THEN, WE'VE BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT WHERE WE WERE REAR-ENDED (WHICH WOULD NOT DEPLOY THE AIRBAGS) BUT IT PUSHED US INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF US (WHICH SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED THE AIRBAGS). SEEING AS THIS LIGHT JUST CAME ON WAY BEFORE ANY ACCIDENTS AND COULD NOT HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY ANYTHING WE DID, I BELIEVE IT TO BE FAULTY FROM THE MANUFACTURER. WHEN GOOGLING THIS ISSUE, I FOUND A LOT OF PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SAME THING HAPPENING. YET, MITSUBISHI HAS NEVER BEEN PUSHED TO MAKE THEIR SEAT BELT PRETENSIONER FLAW INTO A SAFETY RECALL AND EXPECTS TO JUST MAKE MONEY OFF MITUBISHI OWNERS COMING IN TO PAY TO HAVE THIS FIXED.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-02-26
- VIN: JA3AU26U78U
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: I PURCHASED A USED 2008 MITSUBISHI LANCER WITH 163K MILES ON IT FROM A THIRD PARTY. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR TWO OPEN RECALLS. THE DEALER CALLED ME THE NEXT MORNING AND EXPLAINED TO ME THAT THE SUBFRAME IS CORRODED AND WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED. IN FACT THE DEALER ADVISED THE VEHICLE NOT BE DRIVEN AND THE PART BE REPLACED IMMEDIATELY BECAUSE IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. NOW I HAVE A VEHICLE I CAN'T DRIVE OR SELL. THE REPAIR ITSELF IS MORE THAN THE CAR IS WORTH. THE SUBFRAME IS PART OF THE FRAME AND IS NOT A MAINTENANCE ITEM AND SHOULD LAST THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE. THIS IS A MANUFACTURING DEFEAT AS SHOWN IN THE RECALL FOR CANADA ON 2008-2013 LANCER MODELS. I CALLED THE FACTORY AND WAS GIVEN THE RUN AROUND. I ASKED FOR A MEETING BETWEEN THE DEALERSHIP AND A FACTORY REP TO FIND AN APPROPRIATE SOLUTION BUT NOTHING HAS MATERIALIZED. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESS BY THE MANUFACTURER BEFORE SOMEONE GETS INJURED OR KILLED. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF LANCERS ON THE ROADS TODAY AND I WOULD HATE TO KNOW HOW MANY OF THESE HAVE CORRODED SUBFRAMES WHERE THE LOWER FRONT CONTROL ARMS COULD FALL TO THE GROUND.
STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-06-26
- VIN: JA3AU86U08U
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING MY CAR TO WORK THIS MORNING AND ALL OF A SUDDEN I FELT A DRASTIC PULL TO THE LEFT. I GET OUT OF THE CAR AND LOOK AT ALL SIDES OF THE VEHICLE AND DON'T NOTICE ANYTHING RIGHT AWAY. THEN I NOTICE MY LEFT FRONT WHEEL IS TURNED SLIGHTLY WHILE THE STEERING WHEEL IS STRAIGHT. I LOOK UNDER THE VEHICLE TO FIND THE SUB FRAME ROTTED AND RUSTED AWAY FROM THE CONTROL ARM. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE AS THIS CAR HAS 123K MILES AND BEING A 2008 CAR, JUST 1 YEAR LATER THAN THE RECALLS CURRENTLY UP TO 2007 FOR THE SAME EXACT ISSUE. THE RECALL SHOULD BE EXTENDED TO THE 2008 VEHICLES AS WELL DUE TO THE INSANE AMOUNT OF COMPLAINTS ON THIS SPECIFIC SUB FRAME ROTTING ISSUE.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-05-28
- VIN: JA3AU86U98U
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: DURING MY LAST TWO VISIT WITH TECHNICIAN (LAST ONE WITH MITSUBISHI DEALER, AND ONE BEFORE WITH OTHER SERVICE PLACE), THE VEHICLE TECHNICIAN NOTICE EXCESSIVELY RUSTED CROSS-MEMBER. THE TECHNICIAN AT MITSUBISHI DEALER ALSO PUT THE NOTE IN "COMPUTERIZED VEHICLE REPORT". WHEN I ASKED THE TECHNICIAN ABOUT HOW BAD IS THIS AND HOW TO FIX THIS, HE MENTIONED THAT OTHER MITSUBISHI LANCER VEHICLES ARE AFFECTING WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AND MITSUBISHI IS RECALLING VEHICLES YEAR BY YEAR, SO HOPE THEY WILL RECALL THIS MODEL TOO. AND FOR SAFETY, I NEED TO MAKE SURE TO KEEP EYE AND NEED TO PAY ATTENTION TO ANY CHANGE TO VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING AS THIS MAY CRACK AND I AM END UP IN ACCIDENT. *TR*JB

- Date Of Incident: 2019-01-02
- VIN: JA3AU86U28U
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-11-27
- VIN: JA3AU86U78U
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: TUESDAY, 11/27/18, MORNING MY CAR (100,00 TOTAL MILES DRIVEN) STARTED TO MAKE A PERIODIC SQUEAKING NOISE WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY TO WORK. I THEN TOOK IT TO AN AUTO REPAIR SHOP THAT SAME MORNING TO HAVE IT CHECKED. THEY SAID THAT THE PROBLEM WAS COMING FROM MY DRIVE BELT AND PULLEYS. THEY REFERRED ME TO THE FOLLOWING LINK: HTTPS://WWW.CARS.COM/RECALLS/MITSUBISHI-LANCER-2008/. ACCORDING TO THIS WEBSITE, MY CAR HAS A RECALL FOR THE DRIVE BELT AND PULLEYS. SO I WENT ON MITSUBISHI'S RECALL WEBSITE TO PUT IN MY VID NUMBER, BUT IT WAS SHOWING THAT MY CAR DOES NOT QUALIFY FOR THE RECALL. SO I PROCEEDED TO HAVE THE AUTO REPAIR SHOP REPAIR MY CAR ACCORDING TO THE RECALL INSTRUCTIONS SHOWN ON THE WEBSITE THAT HE REFERRED ME TO, WHICH INVOLVES REPLACING THE DRIVE BELT, PULLEYS, AND DRIVE BELT TENSIONER. IT SEEMED TO HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM, BUT THE NEXT DAY (11/28) ON MY BACK HOME FROM WORK, I STARTED HEARING ANOTHER NOISE AFTER COMING OFF THE FREEWAY. I NOTICED THAT MY DRIVE BELT HAD BEEN TORN. PLEASE REFER TO THE ATTACHED PICTURE. SO I CONTACTED THE AUTO REPAIR SHOP TO LOOK INTO IT AGAIN. THEY HAVE REPLACED THE DRIVE BELT AGAIN, BUT RECOMMENDED THAT I TRY TO CONTACT MITSUBISHI AGAIN. ACCORDING TO THEM, THE SYMPTOMS MATCH THE INFORMATION IN THE RECALL, BUT AGAIN, MITSUBISHI'S WEBSITE SAYS THAT MY CAR DOES NOT QUALIFY FOR THIS RECALL. PRIOR TO THIS EVENT, I HAD MY DRIVE BELT AND BATTERY REPLACED. IS MITSUBISHI IN NO WAY RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS? I DO NOT RECALL RECEIVING A LETTER BACK IN 2014 ABOUT ANY RECALL, BUT I MAY NOT BE REMEMBERING CORRECTLY. IS IT POSSIBLE TO SEE THE HISTORY OF RECALLS THAT WERE DONE ON MY CAR? 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer.
- Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
- Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
- Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2008-2010 Lancer, 2009-2010 Lancer Sportback, 2008-2013 Outlander, and 2011-2016 Outlander Sport vehicles originally sold in, or ever registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The front lower control arms may detach due to the front cross member corroding from salt water exposure such as from road salt use.
- Consequence: A detached front control arm can result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front cross members. Depending on the level of existing corrosion, either a sealing/anti-corrosion agent will be applied or the front cross member will be replaced with a new one. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began August 7, 2020. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-20-003.
- Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
- Components: VISIBILITY:SUN/MOON ROOF ASSEMBLY
- Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2007-2010 Outlander, 2008-2010 Lancer, 2009-2010 Lancer Evolution, and 2010 Lancer Sportback vehicles equipped with sunroofs. The sunroof glass may detach from the sunroof assembly, becoming a road hazard to other vehicles.
- Consequence: If the sunroof glass detaches from the assembly while driving, it can become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the sunroof glass assembly, free of charge. The recall began on February 27, 2018. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-18-003.
- Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE:GASOLINE:BELTS AND ASSOCIATED PULLEYS
- Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (Mitsubishi) is recalling certain model year 2008-2011 Lancer, Lancer Evolution, and Outlander; 2009-2011 Lancer Sportback, Lancer Rilliart, and Lancer Sportback Ralliart; and 2011 Outlander Sport vehicles. The affected vehicles, manufactured with 4B1 engines, have an engine pulley and belt arrangement for turning the alternator, the cooling fan and the power steering pump (if equipped). These pulleys may experience unusual wear and allow for belt detachment.
- Consequence: If the drive belt detaches, the battery may discharge, resulting in an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the drive belt with a rubber belt. Drive pulleys that are excessively worn will be replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on October 15, 2014. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-14-009.
- Manufacturer: MITSUBISHI MOTORS NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE
- Summary: MITSUBISHI IS RECALLING MODEL YEAR 2008-2009 LANCER AND LANCER EVOLUTION VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, KENTUCKY, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN AND DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. IN AREAS WHERE HEAVY ROAD SALT IS USED IN THE WINTER, A LONG TERM EXPOSURE TO A MIXTURE OF MELTED SNOW WITH SALT THROWN UP BY THE OTHER VEHICLES ON THE ROAD MAY CAUSE A WATER-SALT MIXTURE TO ADHERE TO THE FRONT IMPACT SENSORS.
- Consequence: THIS COATING OVER TIME MAY CAUSE CORROSION OF THE SENSOR. IN THE EVENT OF A VEHICLE CRASH OF THE TYPE THAT WOULD DEPLOY THE AIRBAGS THIS TYPE OF SHORT-CIRCUIT MAY CAUSE A DELAY IN THE DEPLOYMENT OF THE AIRBAGS WHICH COULD RESULT IN DRIVER OR PASSENGER INJURY.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL NEW FRONT AIRBAG SENSORS THAT HAVE IMPROVED CORROSION RESISTANCE. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 27, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MITSUBISHI CUSTOMER RELATIONS DEPARTMENT AT 1-888-648-7820.

- Summary: MITSUBISHI IS RECALLING 39,711 MY 2008-2009 OUTLANDER AND LACER VEHICLES. INCORRECT MATERIAL COMPOSITION OF THE BRAKE BOOSTER CHECK VALVE MAY CAUSE THE CHECK VALVE TO STICK CLOSED WHEN THE ENGINE IS SHUT OFF. WHEN THE VEHICLE IS RE-STARTED AND PUT INTO MOTION, UNDER CERTAIN DRIVING CONDITIONS (VERY SLOW VEHICLE MANEUVERS), THERE MAY BE INSUFFICIENT INITIAL BRAKING ASSIST.
- Consequence: THIS MAY TEMPORARILY INCREASE THE STOPPING DISTANCE OF THE VEHICLE AND THEREFORE INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE BRAKE BOOSTER CHECK VALVE FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING APRIL 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MITSUBISHI AT 1-800-222-0037.
