2003 Audi Tt problems

audi logo

The Audi TT is a production front-engine, 2-door, 2+2 sports coupé and roadster, manufactured and marketed by Audi from 1998 to 2023 across three generations.

For each of its three generations, the TT has been based on consecutive generations of Volkswagen's "Group A" platforms, starting with its "PQ34" fourth generation. The TT shares powertrain and suspension layouts with its platform mates, including the Audi A3, like a transversely mounted front-engine, powering front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, and fully independent suspension using MacPherson struts in front.

The TT's first two generations were assembled by Audi's Hungarian subsidiary, one of the world's largest engine manufacturing plants, using bodyshells manufactured and painted at Audi's Ingolstadt plant and parts made entirely by the Hungarian factory for the third generation.

The last of the 662,762 Audi TTs was manufactured in November 2023.

Common 2003 Audi Tt problems

The Audi TT 2003 has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners of this car. These issues include engine failure, water pump leak, repair costs, electrical issues, and problems with the dash pod, anti-roll bars, and engines.

Firstly, engine failure is a significant concern for the Audi TT 2003. The car has faced recalls due to issues with the timing belt, which can cause the motor to cease working. Owners of the 2000 Audi TT have reported 89 faults and complaints to Car Complaints, the majority (30) of which are linked to electrical issues.

Secondly, water pump leak is another problem that affects the Audi TT 2003. The water pump pulley can develop microfractures, which can cause timing belt failure. This issue is common in Audi TTs from 2000 to 2006, and it can be challenging to maintain the car, especially if it's not under warranty.

Thirdly, repair costs are a significant concern for the Audi TT 2003. The car has faced recalls that range from inconvenient to potentially life-threatening. For instance, the 2000 to 2006 Audi TTs have an issue with microfractures in the water pump pulley that may cause timing belt failure. Additionally, the dash pod, which houses the instruments, can develop problems, leading to the failure of the fuel or temperature gauges or no lights on the dash. Replacements for these parts can cost several hundred pounds.

Fourthly, electrical issues are a significant concern for the Audi TT 2003. The car has faced recalls due to issues with the instrument clusters and power windows. In 2008, a lawsuit was filed against the brand due to the timing belts of the 1.8-liter turbo engines failing prior to the service interval. Audi agreed to replace the timing belts free of charge.

Lastly, problems with the dash pod, anti-roll bars, and engines are common in the Audi TT 2003. The dash pod, which houses the instruments, can develop problems, leading to the failure of the fuel or temperature gauges or no lights on the dash. Replacements for these parts can cost several hundred pounds. The front and rear anti-roll bars are also a problem area, and knocking from the suspension on a test drive is a sure sign of problems. Additionally, the air mass meter can go wrong, leading to poor performance, particularly hesitation under heavy load.

In conclusion, the Audi TT 2003 has several common problems based on complaints from owners of this car. These issues include engine failure, water pump leak, repair costs, electrical issues, and problems with the dash pod, anti-roll bars, and engines. These problems can be challenging to maintain, especially if the car is not under warranty, and can lead to significant repair costs. Therefore, potential buyers of the Audi TT 2003 should be aware of these issues and consider them before making a purchase decision.

  • VIN: TRUSC28N831
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN FOR REPLACEMENT FOR THE DIGITAL CLUSTER, THERMOSTAT AND COOLING PUMP. THEN I REPLACED THE CLUSTER FOR THE FIRST TIME 9/2011. SAME DAY AFTER PUTTING IN THE NEW CLUSTER THE DEALERSHIP STATED IT WAS DEFECTIVE BECAUSE THE FUEL GAUGE WOULD NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY AND REPLACED A FEW DAYS LATER. THE CLUSTER WAS REPLACED AGAIN WHEN THE SPEEDOMETER NEEDLE WOULD NOT MOVE AND STAYED BELOW ZERO. ON THAT SAME DAY I PICK UP THE CAR AND DROVE LESS THAN A MILE AND THE DIGITAL CLUSTER FADED OUT TO A BLANK SCREEN. I TURN AROUND AND TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP WAS INFORM THAT THEY WILL ORDER ANOTHER CLUSTER AND CALL ME FOR THE INSTALL WHICH WAS DONE A FEW DAYS LATER. NOW THE DIGITAL CLUSTER IS NOT MAKING ANY WARNING SOUNDS. WHEN I PRESS THE BUTTON MANUALLY TO SEE, IF THERE ARE ANY PROBLEMS IT SHOWED A SERVICE VISIT WAS COMING UP AND THE SYMBOL TO CHECK THE OIL LEVEL AND WATER PUMP. THE SERVICE ADVISOR STATED THIS WAS NORMAL TO SEE WHICH CONTRADICTS THE CAR MANUAL AND ANOTHER AUTHORIZED DEALER IN A DIFFERENT STATE WHOM REPLACE THE COOLING PUMP AND THERMOSTAT. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND INFORM THEM THAT THE CLUSTER WAS NOT ALARMING FOR ANY SERVICES COMING DUE OR PROBLEMS AND THE CAR NOW HAS A SLIGHT JERK FORWARD WHEN I PRESS THE BRAKES. THERE REPORT STATED DIFFERENTLY LIKE THE CAR RAN ROUGH, THE PANEL LIGHTS WERE FLASHING AND THE CAR SAT FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME. THERE DIAGNOSTIC WAS THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BUT THE CLUSTER WAS FINE. WHEN I PICK UP THE CAR THE SERVICE ADVISOR STATED THE CAR WAS STILL IN GOOD SHAPE NO ALARM EXCEPT FOR THE TRANSMISSION AND ITS WAS NOT THAT BAD BUT AFTER I GOT HOME AND VIEWED THE PAPERWORK IT SHOWED EVERY COMPONENT ON THE VEHICLE INSPECTION REPORT NEEDED FURTHER ATTENTION. I PHONED THE NEXT DAY AND THE SERVICE ADVISOR STATED THE TECHNICIAN MAY HAVE MADE A MISTAKE. *JB

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-01-01
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: THERE IS A VERY WELL-DOCUMENTED, WIDESPREAD PROBLEM WITH THE AUDI TT DASH PANEL, ONE THAT AUDI HAS NOT SUFFICIENTLY ADDRESSED. FAILURES INCLUDE (1) A FALSE OR NO VEHICLE SPEED INDICATION (2) A FALSE OR NO ENGINE ROTATIONAL SPEED INDICATION (3) A FALSE ENGINE TEMPERATURE INDICATION (4) A FALSE FUEL LEVEL (5) COMPLETE DEACTIVATION OF ENGINE (6) IMPROPER STATUS OF SAFETY FEATURES SUCH AS AIRBAGS, BRAKES, TRACTION CONTROL, ETC (7) IMPROPER OR FAULTY INDICATION OF ONBOARD COMPUTER FUNCTIONS AND DRIVER INFORMATION DISPLAYS. IT IS A SHAME THAT THE US HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO AFFECT A POSITIVE RESPONSE FROM AUDI REGARDING A SAFETY RECALL OF THIS KNOWN, CHRONIC PROBLEM, WHEREAS OTHER COUNTRIES, SUCH AS THE UK, HAVE SUCCESSFULLY LOBBIED FOR ACTION FROM AUDI IN THE FORM OF AN UNCONDITIONAL SAFETY RECALL. HAVING A VEHICLE WITH FIVE OF THE OUTLINED FAILURES OF THE DASHBOARD, I AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT AND URGE NHTSA TO INVESTIGATE WHAT OTHERS HAVE DOCUMENTED, NOT ONLY IN NHTSA-FILED COMPLAINTS, BUT FROM THE PLETHORA OF OWNERS WHO HAVE INDICATED ISSUES THROUGH OTHER ONLINE SITES. *TR

2003 Audi Tt recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2003 Audi Tt.

2014-03-07
  • Manufacturer: The Gates Corporation
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
  • Summary: The Gates Corporation (Gates) is recalling certain aftermarket Tru-Flow Water Pumps, part number TFW 41127, sold at certain NAPA Auto Parts and/or installed by automotive service technicians after November 1, 2013 (and manufactured August 2013 through October 2013) that have a black-colored pulley/sprocket or do not have 'US9377' stamped on the water pump housing. These service replacement parts were sold for use in model year 1999-2005 Audi A4, 2000-2006 Audi TT, 1998-2005 Volkswagen Beetle, 1999-2006 Golf, 1999-2008 and 2011-2013 Volkswagen Jetta, and 2000-2005 Volkswagen Passat. In the affected water pumps, the pulley or sprocket that turns the timing belt may develop microfractures causing the timing belt to fail.
  • Consequence: A failure of the timing belt may cause the engine to shut down, potentially increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Gates will notify owners, and dealers will replace the water pump, free of charge. The recall began during May 2014. Owners may contact The Gates Corporation at 1-303-744-1911.

Negative 2003 Audi Tt car reviews

  1. Maxine Yost 2025-01-03

I am sorry to hear that your experience with owning a TT has been disappointing. It seems that there have been some issues with the paint and keyless remotes, and the warranty has not met your expectations. It is understandable that you are frustrated with the brakes wearing out quickly, and the dealership's policy on replacements. It is unfortunate that this experience has led you to decide that this will be your first and last Audi. Thank you for sharing your feedback with us.

  2. Roderick Kirlin 2024-02-16

Hello! If you're thinking about purchasing this car, I wanted to share my experience with you. While the car looks great both inside and out, I've had some issues with its reliability and workmanship. Unfortunately, my car has been in the shop at least 16 times in the past 18 months. I would recommend exploring other options before making a decision. This is just my personal experience, but I wanted to share it with you. Thank you for considering my thoughts!

Positive 2003 Audi Tt car reviews

  1. Bernie Pollich 2025-01-03

I chose this vehicle because of its unique design and available performance upgrade options. In my opinion, Audi is one of the most innovative automakers and I have great respect for their innovation in producing vehicles such as the TT and the Le Mans concept.

  2. Emory Russel 2025-01-03

I think you've chosen the most beautiful car on earth, both inside and out. The turbo lag is easily forgivable due to the great mid-range acceleration. The Bose stereo is fantastic, and the engine sounds are great too. I also love the Moro Blue color!

  3. Mose Gorczany 2024-11-19

The TT Roadster is one of the most fun and good looking cars out on the market today. It's a shame that it's a bit slow out of first, but apart from that, it's the best little car I have owned.

  4. Doris Ward 2024-09-28

I'm so glad to hear that you've been enjoying your car and haven't had any issues with it! It's great that you took such good care of it by changing the oil after 2,500 miles and about 6 months. While it may not be as fast as your previous 911, it's still quick and fun to drive. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

  5. Curtis Kihn 2024-09-08

This car is very special to me. It was my first car and I love it dearly. I feel very fortunate to have it. I grew up around cars and I know a great car when I drive one. It's great to be the envy of my friends, but I'm especially proud to have an Audi. I added some special touches to make it my own, like getting it painted light pink and adding light pink stitching to the interior. It's like my baby.
