2006 Audi Tt problems

audi logo

The Audi TT is a production front-engine, 2-door, 2+2 sports coupé and roadster, manufactured and marketed by Audi from 1998 to 2023 across three generations.

For each of its three generations, the TT has been based on consecutive generations of Volkswagen's "Group A" platforms, starting with its "PQ34" fourth generation. The TT shares powertrain and suspension layouts with its platform mates, including the Audi A3, like a transversely mounted front-engine, powering front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, and fully independent suspension using MacPherson struts in front.

The TT's first two generations were assembled by Audi's Hungarian subsidiary, one of the world's largest engine manufacturing plants, using bodyshells manufactured and painted at Audi's Ingolstadt plant and parts made entirely by the Hungarian factory for the third generation.

The last of the 662,762 Audi TTs was manufactured in November 2023.

Common 2006 Audi Tt problems

The Audi TT, introduced in 2000, has been a popular choice for those seeking a luxury sports vehicle. However, the 2006 Audi TT has faced several common problems, primarily related to the engine, electrical issues, and interior accessories.

  • Water Pump Leak: The water pump in the 2006 Audi TT has a lifespan of approximately 60,000 miles. If not replaced in time, it can lead to engine failure. It is recommended to replace both the cam belt and water pump at the same time to avoid future issues.
  • Electrical Issues: The 2006 Audi TT has experienced a high number of electrical issues, with many complaints related to the instrument cluster. Faults in the instrument cluster can cause the lights and dials to malfunction, which can be costly to replace.
  • Interior Accessories: The 2006 Audi TT has faced issues with interior accessories, particularly the instrument cluster. The most commonly reported problem is instrument cluster failure, which can cost up to $7,500 to repair.
  • Gearbox: The DSG gearbox in the 2006 Audi TT can be hesitant, indicating that the mechatronic unit is failing. This issue can be expensive to repair, requiring at least four figures for a reconditioned unit.
  • Suspension: The Audi TT's suspension can develop faulty bushes, particularly the roll bar bushes. This issue can cause a knocking sound, especially when driving over bumps. Replacing the front wishbones and anti-roll bars is often necessary to fix this problem.
  • Coil Pack: The coil pack in the 2006 Audi TT can fail, causing the engine to misfire and give a rough ride. Locating the faulty coil and replacing it is the solution to this problem.
  • Electric Window Switch: There is an issue with the electric windows on the Audi TT, although specific details about this problem are not provided in the search results.

In conclusion, the 2006 Audi TT has faced several common problems, primarily related to the engine, electrical issues, and interior accessories. These issues can be costly to repair, and potential buyers should be aware of these problems before making a purchase.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-11-06
  • VIN: TRUTC28NX61
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND MY CAR STOPPED RUNNING. ALL THE BATTERY-OPERATED FUNCTIONS (LIGHTS, WINDOWS, ETC.) WORKED BUT THE ENGINE WOULD NOT START. I HAD IT TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP THAT TOLD ME THE TIMING BELT BROKE WHILE I WAS DRIVING, DESTROYING THE ENGINE. THIS WAS NOT LISTED IN MY MANUAL UNDER "SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE" AND EVERY SHOP I CALLED SAID THE TIMING BELT SHOULD NOT HAVE GONE OUT SO SOON. THIS IS SOMETHING I SHOULD NOT HAVE EVEN HAD TO CHECK FOR ANOTHER 20,000 MILES AND IT IS RIDICULOUS FOR ME TO HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE ENGINE OF A "LUXURY" VEHICLE. I HAVE DRIVEN CHEAPER MADE CARS AND HAVE NEVER HAD AS MANY PROBLEMS AS THIS AUDI HAS CAUSED ME. I AM AT AN IMPASSE WHETHER I SHOULD INVEST IN A NEW ENGINE FOR THIS CAR WHEN I CANNOT TRUST THAT IT DOESN'T HAVE OTHER MANUFACTURER'S DEFECTS THAT I MIGHT NOT HAVE FOUND YET. I KNOW THE 2000-2003 WERE RECALLED FOR THE TIMING BELT AND THE OWNER'S MANUAL WAS NOT UPDATED UNTIL 2008. SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE FOR THE CARS THAT HAVE THESE DEFECTS IN THE 2004-2007 RANGE. *TR

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-02-15
  • VIN: TRUTC28NX61
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 AUDI TT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THE TIMING BELT HAD SLIPPED OFF CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE TURBO ENGINE. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THE TIMING BELT, THE TIMING BELT KIT AND TENSIONER, THE WATER PUMP, AND VARIOUS VALVES AND PLUGS WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. AFTER THE REPAIR, THE ENGINE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON AND THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO STALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 75,000. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-05-20
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: TRUSC28N561
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: WAS DRIVING MY 2006 AUDI TT AT 10-15MPH TO MAKE RIGHT TURN. I APPLIED BRAKE LIGHTLY TO SLOW DOWN CAR TO MAKE RIGHT TURN. BRAKES FAILED RESULTING IN COLLISION. *TR

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-07-09
  • VIN: TRUWD28N661
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: HELLO! I OWN AN AUDI TT WHICH I GOT FROM TISHER AUDI IN SILVER SPRING IN MARCH 2006. I HAD 2 TIRE BLOW OUTS SINCE FEBRUARY 2007. AUDI TOLD ME THAT THE TIRE IT RECOMMENDED FOR THE CAR WAS A LOW ASPECT RATIO TIRE , WHICH WAS EASILY SUSCEPTIBLE TO BLOW OUT. THEY FELT THAT I PURCHASED A TIRE PROTECTION POLICY THAT COVERED THE COST OF REPLACING TIRES FREQUENTLY AND THAT THE PROBLEM WAS RESOLVED. THEY REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THERE WAS A SAFETY PROBLEM WITH FITTING CARS WITH TIRES THAT WERE EASILY SUSCEPTIBLE TO BLOW OUTS DUE TO A SHORTER TIRE WALL, AND THEY BLAMED THE ROAD CONDITIONS RATHER THAN THE EASILY SUSCEPTIBLE TIRES. MORE THAN ONE PERSON AT TISHER AUDI ACKNOWLEDGED THAT MULTIPLE CUSTOMERS HAD TO REPLACE FREQUENTLY TIRES DUE TO BLOW OUTS. I FOUND IT UNCONSCIONABLE THAT AUDI REFUSED TO ADDRESS THIS AS A CONSUMER SAFETY CONCERN. MY LAST BLOW OUT OCCURRED WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AND WAS A VERY PRECARIOUS SITUATION. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS CONSUMER CONCERN. YOUR CONSIDERATION WAS MUCH APPRECIATED. *AK

2006 Audi Tt recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2006 Audi Tt.

2014-03-07
  • Manufacturer: The Gates Corporation
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
  • Summary: The Gates Corporation (Gates) is recalling certain aftermarket Tru-Flow Water Pumps, part number TFW 41127, sold at certain NAPA Auto Parts and/or installed by automotive service technicians after November 1, 2013 (and manufactured August 2013 through October 2013) that have a black-colored pulley/sprocket or do not have 'US9377' stamped on the water pump housing. These service replacement parts were sold for use in model year 1999-2005 Audi A4, 2000-2006 Audi TT, 1998-2005 Volkswagen Beetle, 1999-2006 Golf, 1999-2008 and 2011-2013 Volkswagen Jetta, and 2000-2005 Volkswagen Passat. In the affected water pumps, the pulley or sprocket that turns the timing belt may develop microfractures causing the timing belt to fail.
  • Consequence: A failure of the timing belt may cause the engine to shut down, potentially increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Gates will notify owners, and dealers will replace the water pump, free of charge. The recall began during May 2014. Owners may contact The Gates Corporation at 1-303-744-1911.

This car is amazing! It brings a smile to my face every day at 4:30 when I get to drive it home. It's zippy and gets an impressive 30 miles to the gallon, which is a huge plus at the current gas prices of 3.10 a gallon. I've only taken it on one road trip so far, where we zipped along at 75-80 and the ride was fairly smooth. Although, when we hit a bump or a pothole, we definitely felt it. The best part is that there is plenty of room for all my stuff if I fold the rear seats down. And let's not forget about the awesome sound system! I shopped for months trying to decide which sports coupe was right for me, and I am absolutely sure that I made the right decision.

Your 2005 Audi TT sounds like an amazing car to drive! It handles beautifully on both the road and highway, and you have total control even at high speeds. It's great to hear that it's been holding up well in the snow and rain, which is a big relief in Chicago. The only downside seems to be the coffee holder, which is in a lousy location. I hope you get to enjoy driving with the top down soon. It's clear that you made a great choice in buying this automobile!

  4. Garret Casper 2024-10-07

I absolutely love my 2005 Audi TT! As a proud owner of a '66 Jaguar E-Type and a '52 Jaguar XK120, I can confidently say that the TT is the best car I've ever owned. The quattro all-wheel drive is simply unbeatable, especially on twisty roads. Despite being a sportscar, it still manages to get great gas mileage, averaging at 30 mpg. And let's not forget about the stunning interior - it's truly the best in the business! Although I did have a fuel pump issue at 50,000 miles, which was disappointing, overall my ownership experience has been enjoyable. In fact, I'm already planning on getting another TT in four years, most likely the straight 6.

  5. Hobart Runolfsson 2024-09-12

Performance: Hi there! I wanted to share with you some exciting news about the new TT. One of the biggest highlights is the introduction of the V6 engine, which is sure to impress. But what really sets it apart is the Direct Shift Gearbox tranny, or DSG for short. This innovative transmission features 2 clutches, with the 1st clutch handling gears 1, 3, and 5, and the 2nd clutch handling gears 2, 4, and 6. The result is a shifting speed that is faster than any stick shift available on the market. Plus, the sequential gearbox offers incredibly smooth and linear gear transitions. It's truly a game-changer!
