The Audi TT is a production front-engine, 2-door, 2+2 sports coupé and roadster, manufactured and marketed by Audi from 1998 to 2023 across three generations.

For each of its three generations, the TT has been based on consecutive generations of Volkswagen's "Group A" platforms, starting with its "PQ34" fourth generation. The TT shares powertrain and suspension layouts with its platform mates, including the Audi A3, like a transversely mounted front-engine, powering front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, and fully independent suspension using MacPherson struts in front.

The TT's first two generations were assembled by Audi's Hungarian subsidiary, one of the world's largest engine manufacturing plants, using bodyshells manufactured and painted at Audi's Ingolstadt plant and parts made entirely by the Hungarian factory for the third generation.

The last of the 662,762 Audi TTs was manufactured in November 2023.

Common 2008 Audi Tt problems

The Audi TT 2008 has been known to have several common problems that affect its performance and safety. These issues range from engine failure, water pump leaks, and electrical problems to airbag failures, fuel tank leaks, and high repair costs.

  • Water Pump Leaks: The water pump on the Audi TT has a lifespan of 60,000 miles, and it is recommended to replace it at the same time as the cam belt. Failure to replace the water pump can lead to timing belt failure, which can cause the engine to cease working.
  • Electrical Issues: Electrical problems are common in the Audi TT 2008, with many owners reporting issues with the instrument cluster and information readouts. These problems can manifest as lights and dials jumping about, indicating that the part is failing. Replacing the instrument cluster can be expensive, so it is essential to check that all the lights and temperature gauges work properly before purchasing a used Audi TT.
  • Airbag Failure: The Audi TT 2008 has faced recalls due to airbag failure, which can be a severe safety issue. It is crucial to ensure that the airbags in a used Audi TT are functioning correctly before purchasing the vehicle.
  • Fuel Tank Leaks: The Audi TT 2008 has also faced recalls due to fuel tank leaks, which can be a severe safety issue, particularly in high-speed driving. It is crucial to ensure that the fuel tank in a used Audi TT is not leaking before purchasing the vehicle.
  • Repair Costs: The Audi TT 2008 has been known to have high repair costs, particularly for parts such as the instrument cluster, cam belt, water pump, and gearbox. It is essential to check the service history of a used Audi TT to ensure that these parts have been replaced or serviced regularly.
  • Gearbox Issues: The Audi TT 2008 has been known to have issues with the DSG gearbox, which can become hesitant and lose its smooth motion. Replacing the mechatronic unit in the gearbox can be expensive, so it is essential to check the movement of the gearbox during a test drive before purchasing a used Audi TT.
  • Suspension Problems: The Audi TT 2008 has been known to have suspension problems, particularly with the roll bar bushes. These problems can manifest as a knocking sound when the car is in motion, particularly over bumps. It is essential to check the suspension of a used Audi TT for any signs of faulty bushes or other issues.
  • Coil Pack Failure: The Audi TT 2008 has been known to have issues with the coil pack, which can cause the engine to misfire and give a rough ride. It is essential to locate the faulty coil and replace it before driving a used Audi TT.
  • Electric Window Switch Issues: The Audi TT 2008 has been known to have issues with the electric window switch, which can cause the windows to stop working properly. It is essential to check the electric window switch in a used Audi TT to ensure that it is functioning correctly.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-11-06
  • VIN: TRUDD38J681
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: MY 2008 AUDI TT WOULD CONSTANTLY BEEP WITH "RIGHT REAR LIGHT" OR "LEFT REAR LIGHT" WITH AN X THROUGH A LIGHT BULB SYMBOL POPPING UP ON THE SCREEN IN BETWEEN THE TACHOMETER AND THE SPEEDOMETER. IF I APPLIED THE BRAKES, THE X THROUGH A LIGHT BULB SYMBOL WOULD GO AWAY. IT TURNS OUT THAT THE LIGHT THAT IS FARTHEST OUTBOARD IN THE TAIL LIGHT HOUSING (ON BOTH LEFT AND RIGHT SIDES) WAS THE PROBLEM. I FOUND THAT THE PROBLEM WAS WITH CORROSION WITHIN THE CONNECTORS THAT GO DIRECTLY TO THE TAIL LIGHT HOUSING. IT APPEARS THAT THE GROUND WIRE IS MUCH LARGER THAN THE OTHER WIRES, BUT THE SIZE OF THE CONNECTOR IS THE SAME. THE WIRE HAS TOO MUCH CURRENT FOR THE CONNECTOR TO HANDLE. IT MELTS THE PLASTIC AROUND IT AND BECOMES CORRODED AS A RESULT. IF YOU GOOGLE "AUDI TT TAIL LIGHT PROBLEMS" YOU WILL SEE THAT MANY OTHER CONSUMERS HAVE THIS ISSUES, WITH SOME EVEN REPORTING FIRES IN THEIR TAIL LIGHTS. I REPORTED THE ISSUE TO MY LOCAL AUDI DEALER AS WELL AS AUDI CORPORATE. THEY WILL NOT REPLACE THE WIRES, AND THEY WANT TO CHARGE ME $90 JUST TO DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE, AND UP TO $900 TO REPLACE THE TAIL LIGHTS. THIS IS ABSURD, SINCE IT IS A POORLY ENGINEERED DESIGN THAT RESULTS IN A VERY SERIOUS FIRE HAZARD. *TR

WHILST PARKING) ARE ACCOMPANIED BY "JERKING" OR "BUCKING" OF THE CAR. ALSO, IT IS DIFFICULT TO SMOOTHLY START THE CAR MOVING FROM A STOP. THE TRANSMISSION SEEMS TO SLIP WHILE THE ENGINE SPEED INCREASES, AND THEN SUDDENLY GRAB. THESE SYMPTOMS OCCUR EVERY TIME I DRIVE THE CAR. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-06-13
  • VIN: TRUAF38J781
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I DRIVE A 2008 AUDI TT 2.0T WITH THE DSG GEARBOX. WHEN I TRY TO ACCELERATE QUICKLY OR MOVE MY AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FROM DRIVE TO SPORT THERE ARE TIMES WHEN MY CAR FEELS LIKE IT SHIFTS IN TO NEUTRAL INSTEAD OF DOWN SHIFTING INTO THE NEXT LOWER GEAR. THERE ARE ALSO TIMES AT LOW SPEED WHEN THE CAR WILL HAVE A HARSH SHIFT FROM FIRST TO SECOND AND OCCASIONALLY THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WILL ALMOST STALL WHEN TRYING TO START FROM A STOP ON A HILL. THIS PROBLEM OCCURS SPORADICALLY WHILE I AM DRIVING AND APPEARS TO CORRECT ITSELF. WHEN THE CAR SEEMS TO FALL OUT OF GEAR AND IT FEELS LIKE I AM IN NEUTRAL I LET ME FOOT OFF OF THE GAS AND A FEW SECONDS LATER THE TRANSMISSION WILL REENGAGE IN THE APPROPRIATE GEAR AND I HAVE THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE AGAIN. THIS CONDITION HAS NOT LED TO ANY SERIOUS ISSUES YET BUT THERE HAVE BEEN A FEW TIMES WHEN I HAVE BEEN IN THE MIDDLE OF A LANE CHANGE AND STEPPED ON THE GAS AND THE CAR DROPS IN TO NEUTRAL. THIS HAS LED TO AT LEAST ONE NEAR ACCIDENT BUT NO ACCIDENTS HAVE OCCURRED. I HAVE NOT HAD THE PROBLEM LOOKED AT YET BECAUSE IT COMES AND GOES AT RANDOM BUT I HAVE MY 25000 MILE SERVICE SCHEDULED ON JULY 31ST AND I WAS GOING TO INFORM THE AUDI DEALER OF THE PROBLEM AND HAVE THEM LOOK INTO IT. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-01-27
  • Fire: 1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I PURCHASED IN JUNE, 2008 A BRAND NEW AUDI TT ROADSTER FROM NALLEY AUDI IN GA. IT HAS APPROX. 6000 MILES. ON JANUARY 27, 2009, I DROVE THE CAR FROM MY OFFICE TO MY DAUGHTER'S HOUSE (ABOUT 10) MILES, STOPPING TO FILL THE GAS TANK. I DROPPED OFF MY GRANDSON AND DROVE HOME ABOUT 5 MILES. I LOOKED AT THE CLOCK WHEN I ARRIVED HOME AND IT WAS 6:15 P.M. AS I WAS CONTEMPLATING IF I HAD TIME TO MAKE IT TO PRAYER SERVICE AT MY CHURCH. I DETERMINED I WOULD GO AND WENT UPSTAIRS TO CURL MY HAIR AND STARTED SMELLING SOMETHING ELECTRICAL BURNING. I MADE SURE MY CURLING IRONS WERE OFF AND UNPLUGGED THEM. I WENT BACK DOWNSTAIRS AND THE SMELL OF AN ELECTRICAL. I CHECKED THE FIRST FLOOR OF MY HOUSE AND DID NOT FIND THE SOURCE OF THE SMELL. I LOOKED AT THE CLOCK AND IT WAS 6:30 P.M. SO I GATHERED MY PURSE, PHONE AND KEYS AND OPENED THE DOOR TO THE GARAGE AND LET THE GARAGE DOOR UP. AS I WAS DOING SO, I REALIZED THE SOURCE WAS CLEARLY OUTSIDE AS IT WAS VERY STRONG BUT I STILL DID NOT REALIZE IT WAS MY CAR ON FIRE AS THERE WAS NO FLAME. WHEN I OPENED THE DRIVER DOOR, A CLOUD OF BLACK SMOKE AND HEAT OVERTOOK ME AND I FELL BACKWARDS AS I TRIED TO GET AWAY FROM THE CAR. THE SMOKE WAS SO THICK THAT I COULD NOT SEE IN THE CAR. I UNLOCKED THE DOOR AND RE-ENTERED MY HOUSE TO GRAB THE HOUSE PHONE AS IT WAS QUICKER THEN DIGGING FOR MY CELL AND IT WOULD BE HOOKED TO MY ADDRESS. I DIALED 911 AND EXITED THE HOUSE THROUGH THE FRONT DOOR AND WAITED FOR THE FIRE DEPARTMENT IN THE MIDDLE OF MY FRONT YARD. WHEN THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED, THEY DISCOVERED THE SOURCE WAS A COIL OF WIRES THAT WERE ENCASED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TWO SEATS THAT HAD MELTED THROUGH THE PLASTIC CASTING AND BURNED UP THROUGH THE GEAR SHIFT MELTING THE LEATHER FROM AROUND IT, SUN VISORS WERE MELTED. THE TRUNK WAS FILLED WITH SMOKE AS I ASKED THEM TO OPEN IT SO I COULD RETRIEVE MY COMPUTER. AUDI INVESTIGATED AND DETERMINED NOT ITS FAULT BECAUSE NO FUSE WAS BLOWN AND THAT THE SOURCE WAS UNDETERMINED EXTERNAL FACTOR. *TR

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-10-18
  • VIN: TRURD38J681
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: POSSIBLE DESIGN DEFECT IN THE 2008 AUDI TT ROADSTER. ON OCTOBER 18, 2008 I WAS ON A SUBURBAN STREET AND UNWITTINGLY DROVE OVER WHAT I BELIEVE WAS A SMALL ROCK. THE LATTER UNALARMINGLY BANGED INTO THE BOTTOM OF THE CAR. A FEW BLOCKS LATER I PULLED INTO MY FRIEND?S DRIVEWAY, PARKED, AND WENT INSIDE. FIVE MINUTES LATER I CAME OUT AND FOUND THAT THE CAR?S ENTIRE OIL RESERVOIR HAD SPILLED OUT ONTO THE DRIVEWAY. I PHONED FRED BAKER AUDI SERVICE, AND WITHIN AN HOUR THE CAR WAS BEING INSPECTED BY THE MECHANIC TEAM. I WANT TO MAKE IT CLEAR THAT I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THE EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE PROVIDED BY FRED BAKER PORSCHE AUDI. HERE IS WHAT CONCERNS ME: AUDI MECHANICS EXPLAINED TO ME THAT THE SCREW THAT SECURES THE PAN HAD PUNCTURED THE OIL PAN BECAUSE IT IS TOO LONG AND NOT PROTECTED. HOWEVER UNUSUAL THIS OCCURRENCE WAS, I BELIEVE THAT AUDI SHOULD HAVE PROTECTORS OVER THE SCREWS SO THAT THEY ARE NOT DRIVEN INTO THE OIL PAN IF A ROCK HITS THE UNDERCARRIAGE OF THE CAR. *TR

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-01-07
  • VIN: TRUDD38J481
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: AUDI 2008 TT. THE SIDE VIEW MIRRORS DO NOT GO OUT FAR ENOUGH TO SAFELY SEE THE ROAD. I WAS TOLD BE THE DEALER THEY WERE NORMAL. I OWN 4 OTHER AUDI'S THAT DO NOT HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THIS FROM 2 DIFFERENT DEALERS. I EXPLAINED THAT IF THEY DID NOT PUT THE MIRRORS ON THE CAR SO THEY COULD MOVE OUT FAR ENOUGH TO SEE, IT WAS NOT ALWAYS CORRECT. THEY DID NOT LISTEN TO MY COMPLAINT. I THINK THEY HAVE THEM ALL MOUNTED WRONG SO THEY LEAVE MOST OF THE LANE NEXT TO YOU, ESPECIALLY ON THE RIGHT SIDE. *TR

Great performing car...8 years of driving pleasure....no major repairs .....acceleration and auto shifts are terrific....

  2. Caesar Gusikowski 2025-02-19

I've had the new Audi TT Roadster for around 2 weeks and it is by far the best car I have ever owned! I've had the Z4 and the 2006 Boxster and none of them come even close to the 2008 TT Roadster. Everything about this car is flawless!

  3. Gillian Schneider 2025-02-01

This is my Audi TT 3.2L quattro cabriolet. I've owned it for multiple years now and every time I think I want to look at other cars for a possible trade, I get in and drive and realize it still holds my heart. It's a great little sports car that gives excellent handling, acceleration, and puts a smile on the driver's face every time. When I was searching for a new car, I looked at just about every convertible in the market at that time, but no other had the combination of perks and handling that I was searching for. Once I made the decision, finding this car took another six months, but it was worth the wait. Since then, it has been my daily driver and I have learned all its quirks and joys. Its acceleration is beyond fun and when I put it into launch mode, it borders on scary. I know many complain that an automatic transmission is just boring, but for my needs, I find it to be just right. And when I want to get aggressive with my driving, going into Sport mode and using those flappy paddles is just great. However, one thing I have noted as a minus is the ease of tires braking loose during heavy braking. It took me a while to get used to how the brakes work on this car, but once that was done, it's been resolved. My only real complaint I would lodge against the car is the navigation system, but I have the same gripe on every other car I've driven that includes it. For that reason, I've always maintained a Garmin, especially for trips. Maintenance has not been too much of a problem with this car, but I would note I have had issues with the convertible action. While still under warranty, I had the motors replaced. However, there seems to be a recurring issue with keeping the top down sensor adjusted correctly, which has required multiple services. Although the manufacturer claims that you can open/close the top while driving up to 18 mph, their technicians advise that it should only be done when parked on a level surface with the brake held in place. Perhaps this function has been repaired in the past decade, but I am doubtful. Unfortunately, I will need to take it in for servicing again. Currently, I frequently have to spend a couple of minutes lowering/raising/lowering the top until the status light goes out, otherwise, it beeps out a warning that the top is not completely opened every couple of minutes--very irritating. However, I would still recommend trying out this great little car before dismissing it just because it's not a BMW or Benz. You might be pleasantly surprised. Update 2/2/2019: I still own this little joy and every time I consider selling, I just take it out for a drive--that settles the argument going on in my brain. Get a TT!!!

  4. Giovani Greenholt 2024-11-03

I absolutely adore my first Audi! The styling never fails to impress me every time I get behind the wheel. It's hard to believe that the best car in any parking lot is mine. The front and trunk have plenty of room, and the rear seats are perfect for shopping or even our medium-sized dog. Even when I'm stuck in traffic, I can still appreciate the elegance of this car. And when there's an opportunity to use all the power, it's truly exhilarating! With 2 optional suspension modes (sport/regular) and 4 transmission choices (auto, sport, paddle override, and clutchless manual), the combinations are endless. Plus, the quattro AWD drive is superb in the snow. As a kid-free couple's only car, it's absolutely fantastic!

  5. Roberto Kassulke 2024-10-25

I came across the Audi TT on the road and was immediately intrigued. After attending the Chicago auto show, I was completely sold on the TT and just had to have one. Now, I am the proud owner of a 3.2L 6 speed manual and I can describe this vehicle in one word: powerful. Driving this car is truly an experience and I cannot wait to take it for a long drive. The car handles so well that I can drive 90 mph and not feel any vibration. If you are considering buying this vehicle, I highly recommend it. You will absolutely love it!
