2007 Audi Q7 problems

audi logo

The Audi Q7 is a crossover SUV made by the German manufacturer Audi, unveiled in September 2005 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Production of this seven-seater SUV began in the autumn of 2005 at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant in Bratislava, Slovakia.

The Q7 was the first SUV sold by Audi and went on sale in 2006. Later, Audi's second SUV, the Q5, was unveiled as a 2009 model. Audi has since unveiled a third SUV model, the Q3, which went on sale in the third quarter of 2011, and a fourth SUV model, the Q2, which went on sale in November 2016. The Q7 shares a Volkswagen Group MLB platform and chassis with the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Cayenne and the Volkswagen Touareg.

The Q7 is the second largest vehicle from Audi, after its exterior size was being surpassed by the Q6 since 2022. While the Q7 has been the flagship SUV in Audi's product portfolio, a top-of-the-line model with a lower roof, called the Audi Q8, was released in 2018.

It was one of the vehicles involved in the Volkswagen emissions scandal, with the company ordered to buy back some of the affected cars manufactured between 2009 and 2012. The Q7 is also subject to hundreds of NTSB complaints with many relating to potentially catastrophic engine failure issues, and a class-action lawsuit related to squealing brakes.

Common 2007 Audi Q7 problems

The Audi Q7 Mk1, produced between 2005 and 2015, is known for its luxurious features and quattro four-wheel drive. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems.

  • Powered Tailgate Malfunctions: The powered tailgate in the Q7 Mk1 has been known to close abruptly and unexpectedly following opening using the power function. This issue can be dangerous, especially when standing underneath it, and it is essential to have it checked and repaired if necessary.
  • Brake Servo Vacuum Feed Line Fault: A faulty brake servo vacuum feed line can allow engine oil into the servo, reducing braking performance. This issue can be addressed by replacing the hose and fixing any associated damage.
  • Electrical System Issues: The electrical system in the Audi Q7 Mk1 has been reported to have several issues, including problems with the keyless entry, keyless ignition, rear gate closure, trailer electrical (lights won't work), air suspension, window switches, and HVAC fan motor.
  • Tire Wear: The Audi Q7 Mk1 is known for getting through a set of front tyres in under 7000 miles, and in some cases as little as 5000 miles. The outside edges wear substantially faster than any other area, and keeping a close eye on tyre pressures and ensuring the tracking is checked on a regular basis can help minimize wear.
  • Recall Issues: The Audi Q7 Mk1 has had a few recalls, including issues with the electrically powered tailgate, engine oil entering the brake servo via the vacuum feed line, and the sunroof leaking.
  • Expensive Parts and Maintenance: The Audi Q7 Mk1 is a heavy car, and there will be more wear and tear on the parts. The parts are expensive, and brake pads, tires, rims, fuel economy, and the higher-powered petrols can all cost more than a normal car .

In summary, the Audi Q7 Mk1 is a luxurious and capable SUV, but it is not without its common problems. Owners should be aware of these issues and address them promptly to ensure the longevity and safety of their vehicle.

  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: DEAR NHTSA TEAM. MY VEHICLE DEMONSTRATED A FUEL SMELL IN SEPTEMBER 2020. I ALERTED AUDI THAT I BELIEVED IT WAS COVERED UNDER EITHER 20W9 OR 20BJ. THEY SAID IT WAS NOT. I TOOK IT TO A PRIVATE REPAIR SHOP THAT CHARGED ME $71 TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. THE REPAIR SHOP (TEAM PREVIOUSLY WORKED FOR AUDI) SHARED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS COVERED UNDER A RECALL. I THEN TOOK THE CAR INTO THE DEALER AND AUDI FIXED IT UNDER THE RECALL. I SOUGHT REIMBURSEMENT OF MY DIAGNOSIS FEE OF $71 FOR OVER THREE MONTHS. AUDI FAILED TO RESPOND ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS WHEN I FIRST RAISED THE ISSUE, AND LATER WHEN I SOUGHT REIMBURSEMENT. FINALLY, ON 12/16/20 I WAS ADVISED THAT AUDI WOULD NOT REIMBURSE THE DIAGNOSIS FEE NOTWITHSTANDING THE REPAIR WAS COVERED UNDER THE RECALL. THEY ALSO ALLOWED THE UNSAFE SITUATION TO CONTINUE FOR WEEKS BY REFUSING TO REPAIR UNDER THE RECALL. I BRING THIS TO YOUR ATTENTION AS A SAFETY ISSUE FROM A PROTOCOL STANDPOINT, AND ASK FOR YOUR HELP IN SECURING MY $71 REIMBURSEMENT, WHICH I FEEL FALLS UNDER EITHER OF THE RECALL CAMPAIGNS FOR THIS VEHICLE AND THIS RECALL ISSUE. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-01-05
  • VIN: WA1BY74L07D
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: AFTER GOING THROUGH A CAR WASH AND DRIVING BACK HOME I NOTICED THE AUDIO IN MY VEHICLE JUST COMPLETELY STOPPED WORKING. THERE IS ONLY THE "MUTE" BUTTON STUCK ON THE DASHBOARD AND THERE IS NO SOUND COMING FROM THE MMI SYSTEM AT ALL. ALSO WHEN I TURN OFF THE VEHICLE YOU CAN HEAR THE PHONE BUSY SOUND COMING FROM INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE SOMEWHERE SO CLEARLY SOMETHING WAS WRONG. ONCE I GOT BACK HOME AND PARKED THE VEHICLE I DID A VISUAL INSPECTION AND FOUND THE REAR RIGHT AREA SOAKED WITH WATER , THERE WAS AN OVERWHELMING SMELL AS IF SOMETHING ELECTRICAL HAD MELTED OR CAUGHT FIRE. THE NEXT DAY I CONTINUED TO SMELL THIS FAINT BURNT WIRE SMELL WHICH DEFINITELY CONCERNED ME. KEEP IN MIND MY AUDIO IS NO LONGER WORKING AT THIS POINT AND HAS NOT RETURNED I BEGAN TO REMOVE ALL THE ITEMS IN THE REAR LIFT GATE PORTION OF THE VEHICLE AND STARTED TO DISASSEMBLE THE REAR RIGHT SIDE TO INVESTIGATE IF IN FACT ANYTHING HAD CAUGHT ON FIRE OR HAS THE POTENTIAL TO DO SO. WHAT I FOUND WAS, THE BOSE AMPLIFIER WAS COMPLETELY DRENCHED AND OTHER ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS DOWN ON THAT SIDE WERE WET AS WELL IT LOOKS TO BE A BACKUP IN THE DRAIN TUBES. AFTER LOOKING ON MULTIPLE FORUMS ON THE INTERNET I FOUND THAT THIS IS REOCCURRING ISSUE WITH THIS PARTICULAR YEAR AND MODEL Q7 THAT AUDI IS WELL AWARE OF BUT SURPRISINGLY NO ONE HAS STARTED A CAMPAIGN TO HAVE THIS ISSUE ADDRESSED. MY BIGGEST CONCERN IS THAT IT CAN POTENTIALLY START A FIRE IN THE REAR DO TO THIS OBVIOUS DESIGN DEFECT AND ALSO MY ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS HAVE BEEN DAMAGED BY THIS DESIGN DEFECT. PLEASE HELP!!!!!! THANK YOU.

2007 Audi Q7 recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2007 Audi Q7.

2018-11-19
  • Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
  • Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2007-2012 Audi Q7 and 2009-2012 Audi Q5 vehicles, previously repaired under NHTSA recall 16V-660. These vehicles were previously repaired with an interim repair of installing butyl tape to the fuel pump flange, until replacement remedy parts became available.
  • Consequence: The butyl tape may not prevent fuel from leaking. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump flange and install butyl tape, free of charge. The recall began December 28, 2018. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 20BJ.
2016-09-13

IF ONE OF THE STRUTS HAS A TOTAL LOSS OF PRESSURE, THE RESULTANT SLOW MOVEMENT OF THE REAR LID IS INTERPRETED BY THE SOFTWARE AS AN INTENDED MANUAL CLOSE AND THE MOTOR CLUTCH RELEASES TO CLOSE THE REAR LID IMMEDIATELY.
  • Consequence: THIS CAN RESULT IN AN UNINTENDED RAPID CLOSING OF THE REAR LID WITH A RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL NEW SOFTWARE FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 14, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT AUDI AT 1-800-822-2834.

Negative 2007 Audi Q7 car reviews

  1. Buddy Abernathy 2024-11-04

I have owned three Audis so far, including an A4 and an A6. While I have had positive experiences with those models, I have been disappointed with the reliability and quality of my Q7. Unfortunately, I have already had to replace the brakes and tires at only 28,000 miles, which is much sooner than I expected. Additionally, the engine sounds like it is struggling and is not performing as well as I had hoped. Despite spending extra money on the keyless start feature, it does not work well in cold weather. Overall, I feel that the quality of Audi vehicles has decreased.

  2. Ricardo Jast 2024-06-13

I've been reading what other people are saying about the Q7, so I thought I'd share my thoughts as well. In terms of performance, it's really impressive - a fast car that handles well on the road. However, I have to admit that the ride can be a bit bumpy. I recently took a long trip with some friends, and they all commented on how rough it was. As for the interior and exterior design, I think it's generally well done. The only downside is that the backseat isn't very spacious, so it's not ideal for carrying adults. Additionally, when you fold down the seats, there's not a lot of room for cargo compared to other SUVs.

We have had our 3rd Audi for 1.5 years now, and unfortunately, it has not met our expectations. For example, the gas door feels and works like a Yugo, and the instrument panel is located directly under the cup holders, which can cause spills that affect the audio. Additionally, we were disappointed to find out that the $800 repair cost was not covered by the warranty. Over the years, we have noticed a decline in service quality, and it feels like the company is trying to extract as much money as possible from us. Although our experience has not been as positive as in the past, we must admit that the engine is great and performs well in the snow. If we had to choose again, we would opt for the GL 450 or 550. While the Acura may be more reliable, it does not drive as well or turn as sharply.

I recently purchased a German driving machine and while the handling and engine are great, I have experienced some disappointments. Despite having no trouble found, the transmission can be jerky and the car itself can be creaky. Additionally, I have had issues with the MMI console and a door handle falling off, which I have heard is a common problem. The finish is also falling off the console and the cargo net has fallen off twice, while the gas door sticks open. For the price of this car, I expected a higher level of quality. I wonder if those who gave this car a 9.5 rating still have their cars in the dealer lot or if I just got a lemon.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car. As a grandma and a teacher, I always prioritize safety and take good care of my car. However, I've been having some issues with it lately. Unfortunately, I've had to replace the engine with only 19,000 miles on it. Additionally, I've experienced some other faults such as the emergency brake locking on me while driving, which was quite scary. The window mechanism is also broken on both front windows, the molding is coming off, the headlights are fogged from the inside, and the brakes are not working well. I just wanted to share my experience with you so that you can make an informed decision. Thank you for listening!

I had a loaded 2.7 twin turbo allroad for four years and loved it! When I started tracking the Pike's Peak concept, I was filled with great anticipation. I then ordered my 4.2 Premium S-line with all the options and was blown away by the Q7. It tops the allroad on all accounts! The exhaust note is powerful when revving it up, yet quiet when featherfooting it. The MMI is not as difficult as people think it is, and the voice-driven system works great and is very accurate. The adaptive suspension goes from low and sporty up to tall and beefy, and the sound system is impressive and easily fine-tuned. And who doesn't love a sunroof? Especially one that is over 5 feet long and 39 inches wide. When the motorized screen retracts, oohs and aahs are common.

After buying an Acura MDX a year ago, I recently traded it for a Q7. What a huge upgrade! And the best part? It was basically the same price. There's really no comparison between the two. Looking back, choosing the Q7 was the right decision all along. Even though I was a new SUV driver at the time and the Q7 seemed like a lot of vehicle for me, I'm so glad I went for it. I absolutely love everything about the Q7, from the stylish interior and exterior foot lights to the powerful yet smooth ride. The build quality is exceptional, and the superb braking and transmission make for an incredibly safe and comfortable driving experience.

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your car/SUV so far! It's great to hear that it's both fun and sporty, while still driving like a luxury sedan. The engine sounds just right, not too loud. You mentioned that you drove the 4.2 and felt that the 3.6 was faster, which is interesting. Perhaps it's due to the weight or better gas mileage? You also mentioned driving the S-line and feeling that it was a bit sluggish. Maybe it's the suspension or tires? I absolutely love the look and feel of the interior, and all the bells and whistles, especially the keyless entry. It's so convenient not having to dig through your purse! The MMI takes some getting used to, but it's definitely worth the time. At first, you mentioned not liking the berber carpet, but after ordering the all-weather mats, you found that it made the car look great and you now appreciate the durable berber. Overall, it sounds like you made a great choice with your car/SUV!

I bought my Audi Q7 to replace my Honda Pilot. I needed the extra towing capacity and I wanted a luxury SUV. The Audi Q7 did not disappoint me. The inside is typical Audi, comfortable, quite and well thoughout. The controls are all first rate and the car's performance and handling are top notch. The mileage is averaging about 16.3 mpg in mixed driving. If you select the sport mode on the transmission, it makes a huge performance difference, but it does hurt your mileage. All in all, it's probably the best SUV on the market today!

Congratulations on your new Q7! It's great to hear that you're enjoying the extra space compared to your previous X5. With all the optional packages, it must be a lot of fun to play around with. While it may not ride like a traditional SUV, it still sounds like a great ride. I hope it performs well in the snow with the 60/40 split all-wheel drive. Overall, it sounds like you're off to a great start with your new Q7!
