2011 Audi Q7 problems

audi logo

The Audi Q7 is a crossover SUV made by the German manufacturer Audi, unveiled in September 2005 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Production of this seven-seater SUV began in the autumn of 2005 at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant in Bratislava, Slovakia.

The Q7 was the first SUV sold by Audi and went on sale in 2006. Later, Audi's second SUV, the Q5, was unveiled as a 2009 model. Audi has since unveiled a third SUV model, the Q3, which went on sale in the third quarter of 2011, and a fourth SUV model, the Q2, which went on sale in November 2016. The Q7 shares a Volkswagen Group MLB platform and chassis with the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Cayenne and the Volkswagen Touareg.

The Q7 is the second largest vehicle from Audi, after its exterior size was being surpassed by the Q6 since 2022. While the Q7 has been the flagship SUV in Audi's product portfolio, a top-of-the-line model with a lower roof, called the Audi Q8, was released in 2018.

It was one of the vehicles involved in the Volkswagen emissions scandal, with the company ordered to buy back some of the affected cars manufactured between 2009 and 2012. The Q7 is also subject to hundreds of NTSB complaints with many relating to potentially catastrophic engine failure issues, and a class-action lawsuit related to squealing brakes.

Common 2011 Audi Q7 problems

The Audi Q7, a luxury midsize SUV produced since 2005, is known for its advanced technology and spacious interior. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems.

  • Misfiring Engine: Misfiring can occur due to faulty ignition coils, spark plugs, or fuel injectors, particularly in the 2007-2011 models. Drivers may experience shuddering during idling or acceleration, or their check engine light may illuminate after starting the vehicle cold.
  • Knock Sensor: Several Audi Q7 owners have reported issues with the knock sensor, causing the check engine light to come on and potentially leading to reduced acceleration and engine damage. This issue has been reported in models ranging from 2007 to 2012.
  • Front Headrests: Some drivers have found the front headrests to tilt too far forward, causing discomfort and potential back pain or neckache. This issue has been reported in models from 2007 to 2012.
  • Rear Axle: Some Audi Q7 owners have experienced problems with the rear axle, including unusual noises and potential failure. This issue has been reported in models ranging from 2007 to 2012.
  • Leaking Sunroof Causing Electrical Issues: Audi Q7 owners have reported leaks from the sunroof, which can lead to electrical issues. This problem has been reported in models ranging from 2007 to 2012.
  • Seatbelt Problems: Several drivers have reported issues with the Q7's seatbelts, including fraying belts, rear seatbelts becoming unlocked from the locked position, and seatbelts that stay locked. In 2021, Audi recalled thousands of Q7s for a seatbelt locking retractor malfunction.
  • Power-Operated Tailgate: The power-operated tailgate may close abruptly and unexpectedly following opening using the power function. This issue has been reported in the earlier version of the Q7, produced from 2006 to 2015.
  • Tyre Wear: The Audi Q7 is known for getting through a set of front tyres in under 7000 miles, with the outside edges wearing substantially faster than any other area. This issue has been reported in models produced from 2006 to 2015.
  • Recall Issues: Recalls have been issued for the Q7, including a fault with the electrically powered tailgate and potential engine oil entering the brake servo via the vacuum feed line, causing the brake servo diaphragm to rupture and loss of brake servo assistance.

It is important to note that the Audi Q7 has established itself as a reliable choice among used cars, with an impressive reliability rating of 96.6% in the luxury SUV category. However, like any vehicle, regular maintenance and servicing are crucial to ensure its longevity and reliability.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-05
  • VIN: WA1WMBFE0BD
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The Bosch CP4 High Pressure Fuel Pump failed suddenly at interstate speed (65-70mph) as I was driving up a hill in 3 lanes of traffic. The car stalled immediately and lost all motive power. I had to limp across 3 lanes of traffic to get to the shoulder right away, risking collision from passing vehicles. I could provide the damaged pump for inspection if needed. It's a common failure of the CP4 design, disintegrating and pushing tiny metal shards throughout the fuel system including injectors. The CP4 has been recalled on many vehicles previously. The problem has been diagnosed by the Audi dealership and confirmed the Bosch CP4 pump failed and destroyed the entire fuel system. The car has been dealership maintained since new and had no warning signs of failure, or lights. It was running perfectly prior to this incident. Because of the location of the incident there was a 5 hour delay in roadside assistance, in which my family sat on the side of the road.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-08-12
  • VIN: WA1VMAFE3BD
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: THIS COMPLAINT PERTAINS TO AUDI'S ADBLUE (NOX) SYSTEM. THE NOX SENSOR FAILED, WHEN THE CAR IS DRIVING OR STATIONARY. THE WARNING ALERT STATES THE CAR WILL NOT START WITHIN 600 MILES. THE NOX SENSOR MUST BE REPLACE; OTHERWISE, THE CAR WILL NOT RUN DUE TO THE SOFTWARE LOCK OUT TRIGGERED BY THE SENSOR. I AM FORCED TO REPAIR THE CAR DESPITE THE FACT THE TDI ADBLUE SYSTEM NEVER WORKED PROPERLY AS ADVERTISED BY VW/AUDI. IN MY VIEW, VW/AUDI SHOULD REPLACE THE SENSOR OR VW/AUDI SHOULD OFFER A REIMBURSEMENT FOR ANY COST RELATED TO THE TDI ADBLUE SYSTEM THAT OCCURRED WHILE THE COURT CASE IS PENDING.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-06-01
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: THIS COMPLAINT PERTAINS TO AUDIS ADBLUE(NOX) SYSTEM. WE RECIEVED A FAULT ON A ROAD TRIP. IT STATED CAR WOULD NOT TURN ON WITHIN 600 MILES. IT STARTED TO COUNT DOWN. AFTER 3 DEALERSHIP VISITS THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE FIRST PART TO REPLACE IS A NOX SENSOR TO THE COST OF 1300 DOLLARS. I REFUSED AS I DIDN'T HAVE THAT AMOUNT. SO NOW I HAVE A CAR THAT CANT BE DRIVEN BECAUSE IT WONT TURN ON AND COMPLY WITH FEDERAL EMISSIONS. I FEEL THAT IF THERE IS A PART HAVING TO DO WITH FEDERAL EMISSIONS THEN AUDI SHOULD HAVE TO BE FORCED TO REPLACE IT LIKE THEY WOULD A CATALYTIC CONVERTER. OR NOT DISABLE THE VEHICLE IN CASE I'M IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE!!!!!! AUDI SHOULD REMOVE THAT PROGRAMMING, GIVEN THE FACT THAT IN A STATE OF EMERGENCY I WOULD APPRECIATE THE ABILITY TO CONTINUE DRIVING FOR MONTHS OR YEARS(IF NEED BE) IF THE COUNTRY IS LACKING INFRASTRUCTURE. ANOTHER SCENARIO WOULD BE IF I DECIDE TO DRIVE ALL THE WAY TO THE SOUTHERN TIP OF SOUTH AMERICA. I WOULD HATE FOR MY CAR TO BE STRANDED BECAUSE OF A NOT SO CRITICAL ISSUE.

ON OUR WAY HOME FROM OUR FAMILY VACATION FROM THE FL KEYS ON 07/06/14 ONE TIRE SEPARATED AND ALL FOUR TIRES WERE OFF BALANCE. WE PURCHASED FOUR NEW TIRES TO CONTINUE OUR 500 MILE JOURNEY HOME. AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-04-02
  • Number Of Injuries: 5
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JHMCM56864C
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I AND FOUR CHILDREN BETWEEN THE AGES OF 2 AND 9 WERE DRIVING A 2011 AUDI Q7 ON A RIGHT LANE OF A STREET. WE HAD A GREEN LIGHT AND ANOTHER DRIVER IN A HONDA MINIVAN FROM THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE STREET MADE A LEFT TURN IN FRONT OF US WITHOUT YIELDING AND THOUGH I HIT THE BRAKE IMMEDIATELY, I WAS NOT ABLE TO AVOID CRASHING HEAD ON INTO THE OTHER CAR ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VAN. I AM TOLD THAT MY AUDI IS PROBABLY TOTALED BUT WE ARE WAITING TO HEAR THE OFFICIAL RESULTS. WE WERE ALL WEARING SEATBELTS BUT THE AIRBAGS ON MY AUDI NEVER DEPLOYED. WE ALL HIT OUR HEAD BACKWARDS. I HAVE A SPRAINED KNEE AND PAIN ON MY NECK, SHOULDERS AND BACK; ONE CHILD SEATED ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT, AGE 9, HAS CHEST AND WAIST PAIN, ANOTHER CHILD, AGE 6, SEATED BEHIND THE DRIVER SEAT, HAD A CONCUSSION AND PAIN ON HIS HEAD AND RIGHT FRONT SHOULDER; ANOTHER 9 YEAR OLD, SEATED IN THE MIDDLE BACK SEAT, HAD A CUT IN HIS NOSE AND WAS BLEEDING, NOT SURE WHAT CAUSED IT AND ALSO HAS A NECK AND BACK PAIN; A 2 YEAR OLD HAD SOME CUTS AND BRUISES ON BOTH SIDES OF THE NECK CAUSED BY THE SEAT BELT AND HAD PAIN ON THE BACK OF THE NECK. WE WERE ALL TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL IN AN AMBULANCE AND TREATED. THE BURNING QUESTION EVERYONE HAD WAS "HOW COME THE AIRBAGS NEVER DEPLOY?". WHEN WE ASKED AUDI, WE WERE TOLD IT HAPPENS EVEN IN THE WORST ACCIDENTS AS LONG AS THE SENSOR DOES NOT SENSE DANGER. OUR CAR'S FRONT CRUMBLED INWARDS AND IT IS BEING CONSIDERED TO BE TOTALED, IF THAT IS NOT DANGER, I DON'T KNOW WHAT MORE SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED TO US FOR THE SENSOR TO SENSE DANGER. *TR

Negative 2011 Audi Q7 car reviews

  1. Luciano Howell 2024-11-23

I recently purchased a used 2011 Audi Q7 TDI Diesel in March 2021. It can be challenging for those living in countries without trained Audi technicians, as you may need to tow your vehicle all the way to the Audi service center.

Positive 2011 Audi Q7 car reviews

  1. Eric Jaskolski 2025-01-05

I previously owned the '07 4.2 Q7 and really enjoyed it, but was disappointed with the lower gas mileage (18.5mpg). I also tried the Q5, which had good mileage but was too small for my needs. However, the TDI has been a terrific choice for me, as I am averaging over 25 mpg on both highway and city driving, and over 28mpg on the highway. The upgraded MMI is easy to use, and the LED lights are a nice touch. Additionally, the warning sounds for the front and back bumpers (plus rear camera) make parking a breeze. The ride is smooth and quiet, and the car has excellent pickup from a standstill. The only minor issue I have experienced is a small delay in engine start when turning the key. When filling up, I did have some trouble finding a diesel nozzle that fit, as many are too big. However, the electronic stability control is a great feature that really works, slowing the car down when going downhill in slippery conditions. Overall, it is an absolute pleasure to drive this car.

  2. Stanford Renner 2024-11-17

Some people thought I was crazy to switch from my E55 to a Q7, but I truly believe it was a great decision. The mileage is 23 mpg, and the TDI power is more than enough, although it may be a little slow for the first second or two. I opted for the S Line with 21-inch wheels and dynamic handling, so the ride is not as soft, but the handling is fantastic. As a long-time Mercedes-Benz owner (I still own an SL55), I believe Audi is onto something. The MMI system can be a bit of a pain compared to MB's system, but I am learning to use it.

  3. Vicente Thiel 2024-10-20

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your Q7! It sounds like a great upgrade from your previous model. The 3.0T engine provides more than enough power and better fuel efficiency than your old 3.6. Despite its size and weight, the Q7 handles very well and the 8-speed transmission shifts smoothly. If you're looking for a more exciting driving experience, switching to sport mode can really enhance the Q7's performance. Overall, it sounds like the Q7 is an excellent choice for a family vehicle.

I've only had the car for two weeks, but so far it's been great! Despite its weight, it feels light under acceleration, although it does lean a little in corners. The 3.0T engine feels more responsive than the TDI, and while the gas engine's torque isn't quite as good, it still feels like plenty. Plus, the gas engine feels more alive and is more fun to drive. The car is very nice both inside and out. However, some things like plastic interior door handles and a cheap-feeling engine start/stop button make it seem slightly less expensive than a BMW, Lexus, or Mercedes. Nevertheless, it still feels solid overall. I did notice a couple of very small paint blemishes that I haven't had on other cars I've owned, but overall, I'm really happy with the car!

Congratulations on reaching 1k miles on your Q7! It sounds like you have a great collection of Audis. The Q7 seems like the perfect family SUV, especially with the custom DVD entertainment for your kids. It's impressive that you're averaging around 20 mpg with a mix of city and highway driving. You mentioned testing out the 2010 X5 and Merc GL 550, but it seems like the Q7 has the perfect balance of sportiness and comfort. Thanks for sharing your experience!
