2008 Audi Q7 problems

audi logo

The Audi Q7 is a crossover SUV made by the German manufacturer Audi, unveiled in September 2005 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Production of this seven-seater SUV began in the autumn of 2005 at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant in Bratislava, Slovakia.

The Q7 was the first SUV sold by Audi and went on sale in 2006. Later, Audi's second SUV, the Q5, was unveiled as a 2009 model. Audi has since unveiled a third SUV model, the Q3, which went on sale in the third quarter of 2011, and a fourth SUV model, the Q2, which went on sale in November 2016. The Q7 shares a Volkswagen Group MLB platform and chassis with the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Cayenne and the Volkswagen Touareg.

The Q7 is the second largest vehicle from Audi, after its exterior size was being surpassed by the Q6 since 2022. While the Q7 has been the flagship SUV in Audi's product portfolio, a top-of-the-line model with a lower roof, called the Audi Q8, was released in 2018.

It was one of the vehicles involved in the Volkswagen emissions scandal, with the company ordered to buy back some of the affected cars manufactured between 2009 and 2012. The Q7 is also subject to hundreds of NTSB complaints with many relating to potentially catastrophic engine failure issues, and a class-action lawsuit related to squealing brakes.

Common 2008 Audi Q7 problems

The Audi Q7 2008 is known for several common problems, which are primarily related to its high mileage, electrical and engine faults, and the power-operated tailgate.

One of the most frequently reported issues is the excessive wear on the front tires, which can occur in as little as 5,000 miles. This issue is not specific to the Q7, but it is more prevalent in this model due to its weight and size. It is recommended to keep a close eye on tire pressures and ensure regular tracking checks to minimize wear.

Another common problem is the power-operated tailgate, which may close abruptly and unexpectedly following opening using the power function. This issue has been identified in a recall, and it is recommended to check with your local Audi dealer to ensure that all remedial work has been carried out.

Electrical and engine faults have also been reported, although they are not consistent across all vehicles. These faults can include issues with the electrically powered tailgate, vacuum feed line, and brake servo diaphragm. In some cases, engine oil may enter the brake servo via the vacuum feed line, causing the brake servo diaphragm to rupture and loss of brake servo assistance.

The Audi Q7 2008 is also known for its high maintenance costs, particularly for parts such as brake pads, tires, rims, and fuel economy. The S line version of the Q7 is particularly expensive to maintain due to its stiffer chassis

In addition, the Q7's diesel engines have been reported to have issues with diesel injectors that can fail, leading to expensive replacement costs

. The petrol engines, on the other hand, suffer from internal pollution and higher oil consumption, particularly in early models

Lastly, the Q7's sunroof is known to leak, which can cause water to flow into the interior

. This issue is particularly prevalent in the Cayenne, which shares the same platform as the Q7.

In summary, the Audi Q7 2008 is known for several common problems, including excessive tire wear, power-operated tailgate issues, electrical and engine faults, high maintenance costs, and sunroof leaks. It is recommended to keep a close eye on tire pressures and ensure regular tracking checks, as well as to check with your local Audi dealer for any recalls or remedial work that may need to be carried out. Regular maintenance and servicing are also crucial to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-10-23
  • VIN: wa1ev74lx8d
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Good morning, As of two days ago I began smelling gas when I exited my vehicle. I paid it no mind at the time since I was parked amongst other vehicles in the parking lot and this has never happened before or at least since I owned the vehicle. I placed a card board box under the vehicle just to sense if it was my vehicle and have a sense of security that I had nothing to worry about. The next day I did notice that the box contained stains of fluid and smelled like gas. As this is my only vehicle I had to drive to work and noticed that the smell got worst. As I arrived at work I immediately did some research and found out that there was a recall on the matter, but I did not receive any information pertaining to recall etc. On my way back home I drove below the speed limit and in the slow lane just as a pre-caution. During that time the engine light came on putting my stress level even higher. As of today I have reached out to the dealership and expressed my concerns about the safety of my family with the fluid being gas and may cause a fire. The response I received was that there was a recall, but it has since been closed. I have been taking the vehicle to be serviced at the Audi dealership and you would think that they would inform me of that information. I am awaiting a call from the corporate office to address my concerns at the moment and I don't think that it is going to be a good one. I contacted them before about the steering column issue where the system locks you out and would not allow access to get the vehicle started. I was told that it was my responsibility because of the age and mileage on the vehicle. Please note, I have not modified or changed anything on the vehicle. These are all manufacturing defects that they know exist.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-23
  • VIN: wa1ey74lx8d
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I have an audi 2008 q7, that has a gas leak of some kind. Local mechanic says that it could be fuel pump leak. I looked for recalls to this problem and found two for 2008 q7 gas leaks. When I contacted the local audi dealership and gave them my vin, they said no recalls on that vin. When I called Audi corporate, they said the same thing when I gave them my vin. I clearly see the recalls on line and it states all q7 gas engines. This is a fire hazard and Audi is refusing to fix my car, because my vin number isnt listed. Its obvious that its associated with this recall and Im getting no help at all from Audi. They must take care of this recall.

2008 Audi Q7 recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2008 Audi Q7.

2018-11-19
  • Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
  • Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2007-2012 Audi Q7 and 2009-2012 Audi Q5 vehicles, previously repaired under NHTSA recall 16V-660. These vehicles were previously repaired with an interim repair of installing butyl tape to the fuel pump flange, until replacement remedy parts became available.
  • Consequence: The butyl tape may not prevent fuel from leaking. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump flange and install butyl tape, free of charge. The recall began December 28, 2018. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 20BJ.

  • Consequence: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Audi will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the flange, replacing any flanges that are cracked. If the flange is not cracked, dealers will clean the pump flange and install a butyl rubber band to protect the pump. These repairs will be made free of charge. The recall began November 9, 2016. • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL NEW SOFTWARE FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 14, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT AUDI AT 1-800-822-2834.

Negative 2008 Audi Q7 car reviews

  1. Maxime Bins 2024-10-24

My husband bought me this car and traded in our A4 cab for it. I was really excited about it at first, but unfortunately, a month into ownership, the trunk latch broke. It wouldn't close all the way, so I had to drive an hour away to the nearest dealership (twice) to get it fixed. Two weeks ago, my MMI system stopped working and it was stuck playing only CDs. I took it in today and was told that I'm out of luck because I spilled something on it. If I had known that this was such a common problem, I wouldn't have bought this car. Now I have to pay out of pocket to replace the MMI system. After reading a bunch of reviews, it seems to be a really common issue.

  2. Shane Grady 2024-05-17

Our Q7 has been at the dealer for the past 45 days and they have not provided an estimate for its return. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in the quality of Audi's engineering. While I have had to utilize roadside assistance on several occasions, I appreciate that Audi offers this service. The Q7 S-line is a stylish and impressive SUV that is sure to turn heads.

  3. Cleveland Treutel 2024-03-15

The vehicle's reliability has been subpar, with numerous issues arising such as the engine shutting down in the first week of ownership, a front bearing failure at 25,000 KM, and recurring problems with the driver door. Additionally, the V6 engine produces excessive noise even at low RPMs, which is disappointing. While the dealer service could be improved, I am confident in my assessment of the vehicle's performance issues.

  4. Lyric Bahringer 2024-02-27

To be honest, we have not encountered any major issues, just a few minor ones. Unfortunately, the gas cap cover is not very durable and the lock is not very secure - it can be opened with just your fingers even when locked. Additionally, with kids and pets, it can be difficult to avoid spills in the center console, which can damage the electronics. We have also noticed that a part of the body is starting to come loose. Despite these issues, we have remained loyal to Audi and have not considered other brands due to the excellent treatment we have received in the past. While the quality of service has declined slightly, it is still quite good. However, we have noticed that the leather on the seats has developed a large, long crack after only 2 years of use, which is disappointing considering our 10-year-old A6 is still in great condition.

I purchased an Audi Q7 2008 with 160000 km and have put 75000 km on it over the past 4 years. I have been able to fix all issues myself, which has been a great learning experience. During the first winter, I had a radiator leak which I was able to fix with a $100 part from eBay. I also had to replace the battery, which I purchased from Walmart for $280 with a 5-year warranty. Despite the Canadian cold weather, I have not had any issues with the battery. Additionally, I replaced the brakes, including rotors, shoes, and sensors, with a kit from Amazon for $360 and sensors for $40. Lastly, the rear wiper motor seized, but I was able to replace it with a used part for $50 and it only took me 20 minutes. Overall, I have been using 0w40 Mobil every 8000 km and my Audi has been just as reliable as any Honda or Toyota.

I had previously owned an 02 and 05 X5, but I needed something larger. I now have 3000 miles on my new car and have experienced no problems. I absolutely love the S-Line option, but I do find it unfair that Audi takes 2 points off the residual value for leases when you pay more.

The car is great, but unfortunately, the electronics have been a major issue. The console buttons shorted out due to the cleaning solution used to clean off fingerprints. This is a design flaw as the buttons are not sealed and can short out with just a few drops. Despite this, Audi has not provided any support. It cost $1000 to replace the buttons within the first 6 months, and I am now hesitant to use the cup holders located above the electronics for fear of another costly repair. Overall, this has been a frustrating experience. I miss my Range Rover.

I've owned this vehicle for about 9 months now and I absolutely love it. My Q7 has most of the extra bells and whistles, and I have been completely spoiled by all of the features - even the ones I thought I'd never use (keyless entry/start, lane assist, back up camera). With the 21 inch wheels, this SUV handles more like a sports car than a typical SUV. The beefy curb weight provides a sense of security and imperviousness, but it does result in less than thrilling accelerations. However, I was aware of this when I purchased the vehicle, so it was no surprise. Any minor issues I've had with squealing brakes and the like have been promptly handled by Audi care. All in all, I am extremely happy with my Q7.

I bought this car for my wife because we needed more space, but we didn't want a minivan. It's been a pleasure to drive, with good handling and reasonable acceleration for its class. Even though I drive an RS4, I still enjoy driving the Q7. The ride can be a bit rough, especially at lower speeds, but that's likely due to the 20
