The Lexus ES (Japanese: レクサス・ES, Hepburn: Rekusasu ES) is a series of mid-size executive cars marketed since 1989 by Lexus, the luxury division of Toyota, across multiple generations, each offering V6 engines and a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout. The first five generations of the ES used the Toyota Camry platform, while the latter generations are more closely related to both the Camry and the Avalon. Manual transmissions were offered until 1993, a lower-displacement inline-four engine became an option in Asian markets in 2010, and a gasoline-electric hybrid version was introduced in 2012. The ES was Lexus's only front-wheel drive vehicle until 1998, when the related RX was introduced, and the sedan occupied the entry-level luxury car segment of the Lexus lineup in North America and other regions until the debut of the IS in 1999. The ES name stands for "Executive Sedan". However, some Lexus importers use the name, "Elegant Sedan".

Introduced in 1989, the first generation ES 250 was one of two vehicles in Lexus's debut range, along with the LS 400. The second generation ES 300 debuted in 1991, followed by the third generation ES 300 in 1996, and the fourth generation ES 300/330 in 2001. The first- through fourth generation sedans shared body styling elements with Japan-market Toyota sedans, and a domestic market equivalent, the Toyota Windom (Japanese: トヨタ・ウィンダム, Toyota Windamu), was sold until the launch of the fifth generation ES in 2006. The word "Windom" is a combination of "win" and the suffix "dom" expresses a state of perpetual victory. The fifth generation ES used body styling marketed by Lexus as L-finesse and debuted in early 2006 as a 2007 model. The sixth generation ES debuted in the first half of 2012 as a 2013 model, and features increased cabin dimensions due to a longer wheelbase which is shared with the full-size XX40 series Avalon.

Lexus has positioned the ES in the comfort luxury segment, with an emphasis on interior amenities, quietness, and ride quality, in contrast with more firm-riding sport sedans. Buyers seeking more performance-focused models are targeted by the Lexus IS and rival makes, with such models offering a sportier drive with differently tuned suspensions. In Europe, Japan and other markets where it was not available until the seventh generation model, the GS sport sedans occupy the mid-size category in the Lexus lineup until it was cancelled August 2020. In the United States, the ES has been the best-selling Lexus sedan for over fifteen years.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-05
  • VIN: JTHBW1GG8F2
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I had new brakes put on my car and a few months later, while I was driving, the brakes completely stopped working. There was no warning and I ended up going through a red light because I couldn't stop. I was lucky to be in a residential area where I could pull over to the side and be towed to the brake shop. They checked it out, and said there was a code that showed a Lexus issue. We took it to the Lexus service at Woodland Hills Lexus. They drove it and nothing happened, but finally with a lot of nagging on my part, they did a diagnostic (charging me $486.74 for this) and found a problem. Based on what my service person told me, there was a letter sent out to Lexus dealerships saying this was a problem, but they weren't doing a recall. How can they be allowed to ignore a brake problem ? I would like to buy another Lexus (I have already had 3), but I am concerned they are not forthcoming about safety issues. I have emailed their headquarters regarding this, but have not heard back.

THERE WAS NO TIME TO HIT THE BRAKES; IT ALL HAPPENED SUDDENLY. THIS IS CLEARLY UNINTENDED RUNAWAY ACCELERATION, AND THIS MAKE/MODEL/YEAR NEEDS TO BE RECALLED BEFORE ANYONE GETS INJURED OR DIES. THIS IS SERIOUS

I WAS IN EV MODE, DRIVING TO PARK WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR SHIFTED TO "GAS" AND ACCELERATED RAPIDLY. I WAS ABLE TO STOMP ON THE BREAKS AND STOPPED TO CAR ABOUT A FOOT BEFORE HITTING A CAR IN FRONT. FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,POWER TRAIN,EQUIPMENT,HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-08-02
  • VIN: JTHBW1GG6F2
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,POWER TRAIN,EQUIPMENT,HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: MY BRAND NEW ES300H SHOWS DIFFERENT MILAUGE CAPACITY EACH TIME I FILL THE TANK. WHEN I PURCHASED IT BRAND NEW IT SHOWED THE DRIVING RANGE OF 675 MILES WITH FULL TANK. SINCE THEN IT HAS BEEN CONTINUOUSLY DROPPING BY 20 TO 30 MILES EACH TIME I FILL IT UP. NOW I WILL BE LUCKY IF I CAN GET EVEN 500 MILES RANGE. I SHOWED IT TO TWO DIFFERENT DEALERS IN DALLAS, TEXAS AREA. THEY BOTH CLAIM THAT THE CAR IS ADJUSTING TO MY DRIVING STYLE (THAT INDIRECTLY MEANS I AM A BAD DRIVER). IT HAS BEEN 3.5 MONTHS SINCE I PURCHASED IT AND IT IS STILL DROPPING. CAN DRIVING STYLE MAKE THAT BIG A DIFFERENCE (NEARLY 200 MILES LESS THAN THE ORIGINAL RANGE INDICATED)? I DON'T THINK SO AND I BELIEVE THAT DEALERS THEMSELVES DO NOT KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON WITH MY ENGINE/ HYBRID SYSTEM. BUT THEY REFUSE TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM.

Negative 2015 Lexus Es300h car reviews

  1. Conor DuBuque 2024-11-24

The fuel efficiency is significantly lower than expected, with only 26 mpg achieved under normal driving conditions, split evenly between highway and city driving. Despite maintaining a reasonable speed of 65 mph and utilizing eco mode, the results were disappointing. This falls short of the expected standards and requires further attention.

  2. Ansley Leannon 2024-11-14

I purchased my LEXUS ES300H in December 2014. According to the value paper, it was supposed to have a mileage of 39 in the city and 40 on the highway, and it was recommended to use regular gas. However, since I bought the car, I have never been able to achieve this level of mileage. I am not sure how they are claiming that the ES300H can achieve such high mileage. I usually get around 34-35 miles per gallon, which is a 13.26% variation. The car should be giving me more mileage than it is currently showing. In August of this year, I had an incident where I was backing up the car from my driveway and the car was parked on the other side of the road. Although the back-up camera was on, the blind spot monitor was not working and did not beep. When I got out of the car to check, I noticed damage on my bumper. Long story short, I contacted LEXUS and they asked me to take the car to the dealer. They checked my car and said that due to the impact on the bumper, the blind spot monitor was not working. They did not take the bumper off to look at it. If this car has a blind spot monitor that breaks down by simply touching another car, then it does not belong on the road. It should look good in the showroom.

I have been a proud owner of a Lexus for over a decade now and have always enjoyed the experience. Naturally, when I purchased the 2014 Lexus ES 300h, premium package, I was hoping for a similar experience. While the car drives well, there is a slight hesitation when starting up after stopping, which is common with many hybrids. However, I have only been getting 29 mpg even after following the manual's guidelines to maximize mileage. The boxy styling may not be to everyone's taste, but I feel that the car's interior is not up to the same high standards as previous Lexuses I have owned. The ventilated seat has been a bit of a problem for me as it is not very comfortable and causes back pain every time I drive. I did raise this issue with the service manager, who acknowledged that some people feel the same way and offered to put extra cushioning in the back, although that would void the ventilation. While this did improve the situation, the seat is still not up to my standards. Despite these issues, I have driven the car for 44,000 miles over the past seven years. However, I still prefer driving my 19-year-old RX300 as it is more comfortable and visually appealing. Overall, I would say that this has not been my best car purchase.

UPDATE. 5.28.22. It is my belief that Toyota and Lexus may be overstating the gas mileage of their vehicles. While I understand that driving conditions can affect gas mileage, the discrepancies seem too large to be explained by this alone. I hope that a subcommittee will investigate this issue and provide answers. UPDATE. 11.28.2020. Edmunds asked me to update my review. As of today, I still believe that Lexus and Toyota, specifically Akio Toyoda and Mark Templin, may have knowingly falsified data to improve gas mileage ratings. From my personal experience and conversations with other Lexus owners, it seems that the advertised gas mileage is not accurate. I have reported my findings to the EPA, but I am concerned that Toyota lobbyists may try to suppress the information. UPDATE: 5-26-19. I have put over 25,000 miles on my 2015 300h now and have not achieved the advertised 40/39 mpg on the highway. The most I have gotten is 35 mpg. Additionally, Lexus HQ in Plano Texas has refused to provide me with the service history of my vehicle, which was certified based on work performed at a Toyota dealership in AZ. I believe that this lack of transparency may be an attempt to cover up wrongdoing. I have the printouts from Lexus to support my claims.

  5. Osvaldo Ondricka 2024-02-19

I'd like to start by saying that I believe the issues I experienced with my brand new 2014 Lexus ES300H were due to a defective car, and not consistent with others. I simply have to assume this is the case. Unfortunately, I had two major issues that were never resolved, which forced me to break the lease and sell the car. The first issue was a large rattle that occurred when the car reached about 30 miles an hour, lasting a few seconds. I took it to the Santa Monica Lexus repair shop, and after a week in the shop, they identified the issue as being the heat shield. However, the problem persisted even after the repair. This went on for two more visits before I gave up and took it to another Lexus repair shop. Long story short, that repair shop stated the sound is

Positive 2015 Lexus Es300h car reviews

  1. Tyree Tromp 2024-10-16

Although the luggage area could be larger and entering and exiting the driver's seat can be a challenge for someone over six feet, I absolutely loved this car. The mileage was averaging 36 mph.

  2. Jayde Kunde 2024-09-01

I purchased my 2014 300H in July 2016 and it has only accumulated 48,000 miles. In the city, I am able to achieve an impressive 35 to 37 mpg, while on the highway it increases to around 38 mpg. During mild weather conditions, when neither the A/C nor heat is in use, I used to get 45 mpg on 45mph roads, provided there was no stop-and-go traffic. Over the years, the mpg has decreased, but it is still a very comfortable car to drive. The seat vents work exceptionally well, especially during the summer months, and the heated steering wheel is a welcome addition on cold mornings. The car was 'Dealer Certified', which meant that all maintenance (oil changes and other fluids, air filter changes, tire rotation, and car washes) were free. Unfortunately, this ended after three years, and now I have to pay. However, be aware that the dealer may try to sell you additional services that are not covered, such as wheel alignment, which is not necessary unless you have hit a lot of potholes or curbs. The dealer service area is very clean and offers light refreshments such as fruit, hot chocolate, cookies, chips, soda, etc. There are also several rooms where you can watch whatever TV channel you want while you wait, and they even have WiFi in case you need it. Be cautious of the 'Dealer' recommending a 45K service or similar. Always ask specifically what will be done. For me, they said the service was to check all the fluids, change oil and filter, all for $475. However, I got all that done at the Toyota dealer for only $80. I am sure you can find a cheaper place, just make sure to insist on synthetic oil. In the 6 and a half years that I have owned the car, apart from new tires, I have spent less than $200.

  3. Geovanny Harris 2024-08-25

I appreciate the gas mileage and the beautiful interior. However, I found it cumbersome to get in and out of the car at my height of 5'4

  4. Keanu Gaylord 2024-08-23

I have owned Toyotas for years and still have and love my Land Cruiser. My wife drives an Avalon which has given us great service over the years. Last year, I built my first Lexus 300H online and got it just as I specified. I have been driving it for a year now and it has exceeded my expectations. I can't believe I waited so long to get one. The Fire Agate Pearl color is just beautiful and I have no regrets whatsoever.

  5. Dustin Olson 2024-05-17

This is my fourth Lexus and second hybrid. I was initially thrilled with how comfortable and responsive it was on the road. I assumed it would be as reliable as my previous cars, but unfortunately, I encountered some issues during the first scheduled maintenance visit. The AC was no longer blowing cold and the brakes felt a little mushy. After two days at the dealership, I was informed that rodents had chewed several wires, causing the AC to malfunction, the radio to act funny, and other issues to arise during a thorough inspection. Additionally, asphalt had caked the underside of the car, causing the rotors to need to be turned. The dealership suggested that I contact my insurance agency to get everything fixed. While I am disappointed that these issues arose, I am confident that the dealership and my insurance agency will work together to resolve them. Despite this setback, I still believe that Lexus makes great cars and will consider purchasing another one in the future.
