2020 Ford Fusion problems
The Ford Fusion is a mid-size car that was manufactured and marketed by the Ford Motor Company. From the 2006 through 2020 model years, two generations of the Fusion have been produced in gasoline, gas/electric hybrid, and gas/plug-in electric hybrid variants. The Fusion was manufactured at Ford's Hermosillo Stamping and Assembly plant in Sonora, Mexico, alongside the Lincoln MKZ, and formerly the Mercury Milan, both of which share its CD3 platform.
Production on the first Fusions began on August 1, 2005. The Fusion replaced the Mondeo for the Latin American markets—except in Argentina (where the current European Mondeo is available) and in the United States and Canada (where it superseded the then mid-size Taurus and the compact Contour). The Fusion is positioned between the compact Ford Focus and the full-size Ford Taurus. In the Middle East, this model is sold alongside the Mondeo. Versions sold there are available only with the 2.5-liter engine. Unlike in the United States, Canada, and Latin America, no V6 engine is available in that region. The same is true in South Korea, where only the 2.5-liter engines (including those for the hybrid model) are available as of the 2012 model year.
The second generation line-up includes a gasoline engine option, an EcoBoost engine option, a next-generation hybrid model, and a plug-in hybrid version, the Ford Fusion Energi, making the Ford Fusion the first production sedan to offer these four options. Sales of the gasoline-powered and hybrid versions began in the U.S. in October 2012 under the 2013 model. Sales in Europe and Asia as Ford Mondeo began in 2015, along with South Africa, where the Fusion name was used. Deliveries of the Fusion Energi began in the U.S. in February 2013. The entire 2013 Fusion line-up was awarded with the 2013 Green Car of the Year at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show. In 2019, the Fusion was the seventh-best selling car in the United States.

Common 2020 Ford Fusion problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2020 Ford Fusion, several common problems have been reported:
- Excessive Battery Drain: Owners have reported issues with excessive battery drain in the first 10,000 miles of owning the 2020 Ford Fusion. This problem is attributed to electrical accessories drawing power when the car is off. Diagnosing the source of the electrical draw can cost around $50, with repair costs ranging from $10 to $300 depending on the issue.
- Slow Transmission Gear Changes: Another common problem reported by owners at around 5,000 miles is slow transmission gear changes. Some dealerships offer transmission software updates for free to improve the responsiveness of gear changes, while others may charge around $50 for the update.
- Quick Fading Paint on the Hood: Some Ford Fusion models have experienced quick fading of paint on the hood around 20,000 miles. This issue is often caused by prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and improper care. Repair costs can vary from around $150 for polishing and protection to over $1,000 for repainting the hood.
- Engine Misfires and Coolant Leaks: Owners of 2013-2019 Ford Fusion models have reported engine misfires, rough idling, and leaking coolant, which can indicate a blown head gasket leading to engine failure. Models with the 1.5L and 2.0L EcoBoost engines are particularly prone to this issue. Early detection is crucial to prevent complete engine failure, which could result in costly repairs or engine replacement.
- Airbag Issues: The 2006-2012 Ford Fusion models are known for airbag problems related to Takata airbags, which can explode and release sharp metal fragments due to propellant degradation. Owners of these models are advised to have their airbags replaced to avoid potential safety hazards.
- Throttle Body Failure: Ford Fusion models from 2010 to 2016 have been reported to experience stalling, jerking, and hesitation while driving due to faulty throttle bodies. The throttle body regulates air intake to the engine, and failure to replace it can lead to power loss and acceleration issues, costing up to $1,000 for parts and labor.
- Braking Issues: Ford Fusion models from 2006 to 2010 have been plagued by braking problems, including the need for extra pressure to stop the car, extended braking distances, and brake failure while driving. These issues were linked to faults within the ABS Hydraulic Control Unit and master cylinder, with repair costs potentially reaching up to $800.
These common problems reported by owners of the 2020 Ford Fusion highlight various issues ranging from electrical and transmission problems to engine failures and safety concerns like airbag malfunctions. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to any warning signs can help mitigate these issues and ensure the longevity of the vehicle.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-13

- Summary: My flex plate cracked on my 2020 Ford Fusion. Ford has a customer satisfaction program stating that they have a one time repair for cracked flex plates, torque converter, and transmission pump and are refusing to honor it. Once the dealership confirmed my flex plate was cracked they were notified that the repairs were not going to be approved I was giving a quote for $4700 to pay out of pocket. I did not have the money and went to pick my car up until I figured out a solution. While in the process of waiting to figure out my next step of action I was informed by one of the service writers that they were going to approve my repairs by this time my vehicle had completely stopped on me while on the highway with my child in the car. Once it was towed to the dealership my car sat for 2 weeks untouched because of other repairs and I was later informed that Ford is wanting to overturn their decision and not repair my car.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-15
- VIN: 3FA6P0HD1LR
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: Flex plate is cracked , confirmed by bore scope dealership is quoting 14 business days to diagnose. UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-23
- VIN: 3FA6P0T93LR
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: My 2020 Ford Fusion developed a oder coming from the a/c heat system. In a few days it got bad enough to determine something died in the vehicle! I went to the cabin air filter to replace it but as I started to pull it out there was debris stopping it! So I removed the front cowling to expose the fresh air inlet and found it was full is mice droppings and nuts. I then found a dead mouse that got its head stuck in the recirculating door that is for max A/C! After a while of vacuuming out the air filter top and removing the dead mouse. I was able to remove the cabin air filter and then removed the blower motor below it to clean the debris from that. The debris feel when I went to remove the air filter as the opening scrapes the top of the filter as you remove it! I wiped every thing down with bleach wipes and vacuumed as much as i could then blew out the system with compressed air and reassembled the vehicle. When I was done I looked up "how mice can get in there" and found out I'm not the only one this has happened to. Since the air filter does not filter out viruses and bacteria this is a serious health problem. People can get Hantavirus (67% mortality rate) from mice, droppings, as well as other bacterial infections, and viruses! It can kill anyone in the car riding in by breathing the virus coming from the heating or a/c system. The outside air inlet should have a tightly conforming mesh covering to prevent mice and other rodents from getting into the A/C system in all vehicles. Or the recirculating door can be programed to close when the vehicle is shut off! Note the vehicle still smells a bit and I'm going to have it detailed and use a disinfectant sprayer to clean out the entire A/C heating system that I ordered.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-29
- VIN: 3FA6P0CDXLR
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The contact owns a 2020 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, there was a rattling sound coming from the engine compartment. The contact stated that the sound was also noticed while idling or with the air condition activated. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the flex plate needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 84,994.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-14
- VIN: 3FA6P0CD6LR
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Rear Package Tray Trim disintegrating due to sun exposure, the carpeted fiber trim behind the rear seats underneath the rear windshield. The part is still installed in my vehicle, but it available to be inspected I am constantly finding ultra fine black fibers throughout my car's trim/dashboard/steering wheel/infotainment/vents, on my clothes and in my hair especially after driving with my windows down from the trim piece fibers disintegrating. Because the fibers are blown throughout the car this is a health hazard as you are breathing in fiber strands, similar to why asbestos has been banned. A Ford dealership has inspected the part to see if there are any Ford recalls and to quote replacement of the part. First started noticing the black fibers about a year ago but that was only when the part was touched as it would cover your hand/arm in the fibers. It has progressively gotten worse to where air will now cause further disintegration of trim and blow the fibers throughout the car.

The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-01
- VIN: 3FA6P0SU2LR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The center console display unit acts as though "ghost fingers" (internet term) are continuously exercising the display, since at least December 2023. If on climate, it will turn the climate controls on and off, and if on phone, it will attempt to delete phone contacts. The only screen that is safe to leave the display at, is navigation, so that it continually flickers and moves the map around the state, country and world. I cannot turn off the steering heater, or change climate direction to vent or floor without accessing the climate screen while driving. I have had to unpair my phone, and so 911-assist is no longer available. Periodically while driving, the screen will switch over to climate controls, and then I have to switch it back, pressing navigation multiple times until it responds, while driving. These actions make driving the vehicle UNSAFE. The dealer acknowledged an internal bulletin in January, that said a software update was needed to address this known issue, but none was available. They have been unwilling to provide any of that in writing. Please contact me for a 165Mb video of the the screen, which includes my attempts to access screen functions.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-24
- VIN: 3FA6P0SU8LR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: I am aware of the recall on the ford fusion plug in hybrid and for that reason I do not plug it in. We are supposed to use this as a regular hybrid until the fix comes out. That said, my car turns off randomly in traffic. All the warning lights turn on and the car fully shuts down and has to restart. This happens without warning, while in traffic. Last week it happened 3 times on one single drive home from picking up the kids from school. This is not supposed to happen if we aren’t plugging it in, but it’s happening and ford said they think it’s related to the recall (they’re holding on to it for the next five days and I’m on my own for car rental fees). Totally unsafe to just stop working in traffic, even when not using EV mode. This is going to hurt someone.

- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: The entire media display gets stuck off or will freeze up, when I place the vehicle in reverse the rear camera comes on but parking assist, the rear sensors and cross traffic sensors won't work. Once I place the car in drive the display will either stay all blue or shut completely off. I cannot adjust the climate control, use GPS, or use the media. I have to shut the car off and then after about 10 minutes there is a bunch of clicking noise under the dash and after it stops clicking I can restart the car, the display will sometimes begin to work and if it dossent then I have to shut off the car again and go through the motions again. It has started to be more and more frequently, at first it was maybe once a week and now it is happening at every start.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-07
- VIN: 3FA6P0SU5LR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Five months after buying our 2020 Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid, Ford issued a recall stating that it was unsafe to plug it in. Now, going on 10 months later, Ford still has not corrected this safety issue. They continually say they're working on it, but I paid for a car that I didn't get. This car is not a plug-in hybrid if life-threatenting risk of fire or "loss of motive power" means I can't plug it in.

This car is supposed to be great, but unfortunately it can't alert or detect when the keys are inside, which can be frustrating. Personally, I prefer Nissan because they are affordable, have great quality, and most importantly, they detect and alert me when I forget my keys inside the car.
Linwood Osinski 2024-05-24
The car could benefit from more power and a smoother interface. The handling could be improved to provide a safer driving experience, especially on highways. The gas mileage could also be better. While the design of the car is not particularly unique, it is still a reliable sedan. Overall, there is room for improvement, but it is not a terrible car. It may not be the most exciting car to drive, but it gets the job done. It is important to consider your personal preferences and needs before making a purchase decision.

We received this vehicle as a rental and unfortunately found it to be quite uncomfortable. As a tall man, I had to push my seat back to avoid hitting the roof. If you're taller, you may want to consider an SUV instead. However, if you're 5'6 or shorter, this vehicle may be a good fit for you.
