The Jaguar XJ is a series of mid-size/full-size luxury cars produced by British automobile manufacturer Jaguar Cars (becoming Jaguar Land Rover in 2013) from 1968 to 2019. It was produced across five basic platform generations (debuting in 1968, 1986, 1994, 2003, and 2009) with various updated derivatives of each. From 1970, it was Jaguar's flagship four-door model. The original model was the last Jaguar saloon to have been designed under the leadership of Sir William Lyons, the company's founder, and the model has been featured in countless media and high-profile appearances.

Series 1, 2, and 3 (1968–1992)

Overview

The first generation Jaguar XJ was produced for a total period of 24 years, with two major facelifts – in 1973 and in 1979, with a raised front bumper and less tall grilles.

For four years, the 1968 introduced XJ was always a four-door, straight-six saloon on a 2.76 m (108.75 in) wheelbase. In 1972, a more spacious, 4-inch (10 cm) longer wheelbase (LWB) option, and a 5.3 litre V12 engine were added. On the XJ series II (from 1973), the standard wheelbase (SWB) saloons were cancelled in 1974 – but a SWB two-door (series II only) coupé was sold from 1975–1978.

The 1979 series III saloons received a redesigned greenhouse (upper body) and bumpers. The 6-cylinder series III models were replaced by the second generation Jaguar XJ in 1987, but the V12 models not until 1992.

  • Summary: The contact's husband owned a 2011 Jaguar XJ. The contact stated that while her husband was attempting to park in a parking space and the brake pedal depressed, the vehicle independently accelerated. The contact attempted to decrease the vehicle's speed by going over a bump however the vehicle continued to independently accelerate. The brake pedal was depressed to the floorboard and then lifted his foot off the brake pedal resulting in a crash with a median. It was unknown if any warning lights were illuminated since the events occurred rapidly. The front air bag partially deployed upon impact. The contact's husband was taken to the hospital by an ambulance where he was treated for both a neck sprain and a back sprain. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to an independent tow yard and was later determined to be a total loss. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V557000(Air Bags) which was linked to the failure. The dealer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-20
  • VIN: SAJWA2GE9BM
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I have a 2011 Jaguar XJL Supercharged with 65,000 miles that has a knocking noise and is in restricted performance mode. The timing chain and tensioner were replaced by a shop, but that did not fix the issue and I’ve been told there is internal engine damage. The internal engine damage has not been identified. The car itself is in excellent shape, but I don’t know how to proceed to address the internal engine damage as the shop is recommending replacing the engine with a used engine from the salvage yard, but that concerns me as I don’t know the history of the engine from the salvage yard. I've done some research and apparently this is a common issue. Does anyone have any insight on how to proceed with an Arizona recall as this is not normal? Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Negative 2011 Jaguar Xj car reviews

  1. Cyril Hintz 2024-08-03

Firstly, I would like to express my disappointment with the new design of the Jaguar. The XJ series was known for its grace, style, and beauty, which seems to have been lost in the recent redesign. Owning a Jaguar used to lend a certain panache, but now it looks like any other car on the road. Even the iconic 'leaping jaguar' has been removed. It's a shame that the brand has lost its uniqueness. I hope that Jaguar will consider bringing back the classic design elements that made it such an iconic brand. Thank you for allowing me to share my thoughts.

  2. Gilbert Haley 2024-04-22

I've had my XJL SC for 16 weeks now. Unfortunately, I had to take it to the shop just 2 weeks after taking delivery to have multiple rattles and pops repaired. Although it took 3 weeks to get it back, I was happy to find that it was free of pops and rattles. However, yesterday I noticed that the audio system was only putting out sound on the passenger side. I hoped it was a fluke, but unfortunately, the same problem occurred this morning. I must admit that this car is very compelling to drive and on the days that everything works, it is a true pleasure. However, the build quality and reliability have been abysmal.

  3. Rusty Orn 2024-02-17

I have been a BMW fan for 42 years, but I must say that the 2011 Jaguar XJL Portfolio was a great car when it was new. It was fun to drive, had a beautiful interior and amenities, was fast, handled well, and had a head-turning styling that was fantastic on the highway, especially at 80+mph. However, after a while, some of the Jaguar myths of old started to manifest, even after the complete TaTa retool. The automated moonroof cover was the first to go, which came off the tracks and cost $800 to repair. Then, the radio, nav, and AC control unit went out, which cost $2400. An alternator failure stranded us in the middle of Texas, which cost $900. The oil pan also started to leak, which cost $800. Finally, when the front main seal started leaking, all before 40k miles, it was time to go back to a BMW. I did buy a 1991 XJS v-12 convertible as well, and while it was not without its idiosyncrasies, it has provided a lot of enjoyment, and you can still work on them yourself. Overall, if you have a lot of money and a daily driver, a Jag can be a wonderful second car to own.

Positive 2011 Jaguar Xj car reviews

  1. Braulio Hane 2024-11-23

I have owned Jaguars before (2), as well as Mercedes and BMWs (2). I am delighted with the new design of the XJ. Perhaps a better advertising campaign would help more people discover this car and choose it over Mercedes or BMW.

  2. Noble Feest 2024-11-20

The new design was so impressive that I traded in my LS460/Lexus and changed my mind about purchasing a S500/Mercedes after just one test drive. I would have never considered the old Jaguar design. This car attracts so much attention and has convinced me, as a younger generation buyer, that it's the perfect choice. It's fun to drive and handles great.

  3. Carmelo Bernier 2024-10-20

I have to admit, I never considered a Jaguar before. However, a friend convinced me to take a quick look and I was blown away! This car is the epitome of luxury and innovation. I was so impressed that I bought one the very next day just to confirm my initial thoughts. Compared to other full-size sedans like the Panamera and 750 LI, the Jaguar stands out as the most stunning and dynamic option. It's no wonder that it turns heads wherever I go - I even witnessed someone walk into a light pole while admiring it the other day!

  4. Geovany Hills 2024-10-19

What a lovely car! It's great to hear that you've been a Jaguar fan for most of your life and have owned 7 over 45 years. You've also had experience with a BMW and MB. When you first saw this new Jag while passing it on an interstate, you mentioned missing the old XJ look. However, after looking at photos and reading about it, you were pleasantly surprised. It's impressive that your old XJL has over 212,000 miles on it! You've been driving and comparing several new luxury sedans, and the Jag was the last one you tried. The beauty and performance of the car were stunning! After a week of testing the speed and cornering limits (yours, not the car's), you've settled down to enjoying its stately side around town, like a grandmother should. It's great to hear that you love the car!

  5. Beau Gislason 2024-09-09

I had a BMW 650 and needed a larger car as my kids didn't fit in the back anymore. I decided to go for the 750Li and was negotiating with my dealer when I realized that with my preferred options, the pricing put the car over $102K. I thought it would be wise to shop around for other comparable cars such as the S550 and the Panamera S. Luckily, I stumbled upon the Jag XJL Supercharge on edmunds.com. After test driving the Jag, I was blown away by the workmanship and power. I fell in love with it instantly and thought to myself, I'm going to be faster than the other 3 cars and save over $10K on the pricing. Goodbye BMW!
