The Audi A3 is a subcompact executive/small family car (C-segment) manufactured and marketed by the German automaker Audi AG since September 1996, currently in its fourth generation.

The first two generations of the Audi A3 were based on the Volkswagen Group A platform, while the third and fourth generations use the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.

First generation (Typ 8L; 1996)

The original A3 (or Type 8L) was announced back in June 1995, but introduced first in the European market for more than year in September 1996, marking Audi's return to the production of smaller cars following the demise of the Audi 50 in 1978. This was the first Volkswagen Group model to use the "PQ34" or "A4" platform, bearing a close resemblance to the contemporary Volkswagen Golf Mk4, which arrived a year later. Within three years, this platform was used for total of seven cars.

The A3 was initially available only with a three-door hatchback body, to present a more sporty image than the Golf, in both front and four-wheel drive. The inline four-cylinder engines were transversely mounted. The Audi A3 was the eighth model in the Audi lineup to use five valves per cylinder. The dashboard was also used by the first generation SEAT León and second generation SEAT Toledo.

The United Kingdom market first received the Audi A3 in November 1996.

In 1999 Audi expanded the range with the introduction of more powerful versions: a 1.8 turbo rated 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp), and a 1.9 TDI diesel engine with unit injector "Pumpe Düse" (PD) technology and variable geometry turbocharger. The four-wheel-drive A3 1.8T quattro used either the 150 PS (110 kW; 148 hp) or 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) engine, and the same Haldex Traction-based four-wheel-drive system as the Audi S3 and the Audi TT. Also in 1999, Audi also introduced a five-door body.

In late 2000 the A3 range was revised with new headlights and rear lamps, other minor cosmetic changes, an improved interior, and the introduction of a six-speed manual gearbox, on the 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) 1.8 Turbo and the new 130 PS (96 kW; 128 hp) 1.9 TDI.

Audi's electronic stability control, traction-control, and brake force distribution computer became standard equipment in some countries.

Although the first-generation Audi A3 was replaced in Europe in 2003, the first generation model continued to be sold in some markets. Production of the first generation model stopped in Brazil in 2006.

Common 2020 Audi A3 problems

The Audi A3 2020 is a popular choice for those seeking luxury and performance in a compact package. However, like any vehicle, it can experience certain common problems that owners have reported.

One issue that has been noted is a noisy front suspension. This can manifest as a rumbling noise, sometimes accompanied by squeaks. This problem can be disconcerting for drivers and may require attention to ensure the longevity of the vehicle's components.

Another issue that has been reported is a grinding noise from the steering. This problem is typically caused by a faulty control unit on the steering column, which needs to be replaced. While this may not be an overly expensive repair, it does require some mechanical knowledge to complete. The Haynes A3 Autofix package can provide valuable guidance for those looking to tackle this issue themselves.

The air-conditioning system in the Audi A3 2020 has also been known to cause problems. Some owners have reported a whistling noise when the air-conditioning is activated. This issue is typically caused by a faulty expansion valve, which can be replaced with relative ease once the system has been drained by a specialist. Replacing the valve can save owners a significant amount of money compared to having a professional complete the repair.

In some cases, the Audi A3 2020 may experience oil pressure problems. This issue is often indicated by a 'bong' noise and an engine warning light. However, this problem is typically caused by a faulty oil pressure sensor, rather than a more serious issue with the engine's oil pressure. Replacing the sensor can resolve this issue and restore normal operation to the vehicle.

Additionally, the Audi A3 2020 has been known to experience electronic glitches and engine warning lights. These issues can be frustrating for owners, particularly if they require multiple trips to the dealership for resolution. The 2023 What Car? Reliability Survey found that 59% of Audi A3 owners' cars went wrong in the two years covered by the survey, with the majority of faults concerning the infotainment and other electrical systems.

While the Audi A3 2020 is generally considered to be a reliable vehicle, these common problems are worth being aware of. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: The passenger occupant detection system has permanently failed and causes my passenger airbag to be off at all times including when a passenger is seated in the vehicle. WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-28
  • VIN: WAUAUGFF2LA
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: Our vehicle was purchased new a year and four months before the tires were considered completely "dry rotted" out by the Audi technician. The vehicle has 35, 737 miles on it, but it was all highway commuting driving. The TMPS never sparked an issue until the tires got down to 10 PSI only 10 miles before we were on our way to the dealership for this routine 30k maintenance appointment. The tech said that the TMPS would not show an issue because the faulty tires were all worn down with dry rot equally. So it was a 1: 2 punch of faulty tires with a terrible design to the TMPS. To make it worse, we were supposed to have the car in for this maintenance plan 3 weeks before, but Audi called to tell us they were canceling our appointment because they were double booked. In fact, the only reason this car was even able to be seen at this appointment on this day three weeks later was because our other Audi was scheduled for routine maintenance the day of this appointment and we asked to push back our other Audi so this one could be seen since it was too much of a delay. SO our safety kept being put at risk by a design flaw with the vehicle that did not show an issue when it should have, faulty tires given to us by Audi, and then a large delay in service we were supposed to receive (nd a delay in service on our other vehicle as well). Also they were unable to fix the other recall on the vehicle because Audi ran out of parts for it, so we are at risk still for that recall issue. It is unknown when they will address this. Also interestingly enough, we have maintenance and repair plans for everything on this vehicle, and of course, this just happened to be the one thing not covered conveniently. We submitted to Audi that this is unacceptable, and they refused to help us. The mechanic included a video of the damage to the tires that we will submit with this. AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-01
  • VIN: WAUCUGFF7LA
  • Components: AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Supposedly the recall parts for the PODS system can’t be replaced because AUDI is not manufacturing the necessary part!! There is no schedule or estimated time for when the parts will become available. Now I am afraid to drive my car knowing my passenger is not safe! This requires immediate attention as I cannot risk my passengers’ lives every time they are in my car. We have been trying to resolve this for months and the service center says they cannot do anything until the parts somehow magically become available.

Negative 2020 Audi A3 car reviews

  1. Deondre Cronin 2024-10-17

I love the look of this car and it handles fantastic at highway speed. However, I have had some issues with it since the day I drove it off the lot 2 years ago. Unfortunately, I am about to trade it in for a different German make. I have found that this car is not meant to be driven in the city as the ride on bumpy city streets can be quite rough and the interior rattles as a result. This has been frustrating for me and not what I expected from a luxury vehicle. I have to turn the radio up to drown out the noise. Additionally, the moon roof area squeaks and rattles after every rain, which is quite annoying. When the engine is cold, the transmission shifts into gear really hard, which has been uncomfortable. Audi could never explain this to me. One of my vents would blow ice cold while the others blew hot, which was inconvenient. Sometimes I had to turn the temperature all the way up to get any heat at all. Finally, I had some issues with the dealership service department at multiple locations, but they did their best to help me troubleshoot the problems.

  2. Brandon Yundt 2024-08-03

We have been loyal Ford customers for many years and have never experienced any issues with their vehicles, even after driving them for long distances. However, my college-age daughter recently had to replace the transmission in her car after less than two months of use. Despite this setback, we remain confident in the quality and reliability of Ford cars.

  3. Tyree Shanahan 2024-07-12

I was disappointed to find out that my 2018 Audi A3 Quattro convertible did not come with a spare or a donut. I was not informed of this during the sales pitch, and unfortunately, I had two unrepairable flat tires in less than 18 months. This caused me some inconvenience as I had to buy new tires each time. I have owned several cars in the past, including a Fiat, a Capri, a previous Audi, several Mazdas, and several Toyotas, and they all came with full-size spares or usable donuts. I did not think to ask about the A3 convertible. I am currently in a dispute with the Audi dealer that sold me the car for not disclosing this information. Despite the fact that the spray sealant and pump that came with the car would have been of no use, I was disappointed to find out that Pirelli tires do not endorse the use of sealants to repair a puncture, even temporarily. I hope that Audi customer service can help me resolve this issue.

  4. Lamar Bashirian 2024-07-05

Performance on this car is perfunctory at best. Tardy acceleration, noisy engine and cockpit, and inferior materials. Gas Cussler.

  5. Cecil Daugherty 2024-05-28

Although there have been some concerns raised about Audi's safety features, it is important to note that they have consistently received high safety ratings from reputable organizations. It is also worth mentioning that in the event of an accident, Audi's Gap insurance can provide valuable financial protection. While everyone has their own preferences when it comes to cars, it is clear that Audi offers a high-quality and reliable driving experience.

Positive 2020 Audi A3 car reviews

  1. Abner Quitzon 2025-01-08

I recently switched from a cabriolet A5 2014 to the A3, and I must say, I am pleasantly surprised. Although there are some compromises, such as the uncomfortable back seats for adult passengers and the slower convertible top, the advantages of the A3 are numerous. The interior is years ahead of the A5, and I was lucky enough to get one with keyless entry, virtual cockpit, heated seats, full black leather, and quite a few other niceties that my A5 lacked. The front wheel drive 2.0 turbo is rated at 170something lbs, but it drives faster than my previous A5! The automatic transmission is finally right on time, and the electronics are just perfect. Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase, and the only thing I would change is the missing Quattro. Next time, I will make sure to go with a Quattro again. Way to go, Audi! This is a superb car.

  2. Gonzalo Gorczany 2024-11-23

It’s a cute little car. It has both basic and some extra features.

  3. Rusty Tillman 2024-11-05

You have made an excellent choice with this car! It's the best one I have ever owned and driven. I was pleasantly surprised by how it exceeded my expectations. The quietness of the convertible is truly remarkable, and the digital cockpit is simply amazing. You won't be disappointed!

  4. Jeromy Rohan 2024-08-02

I purchased my A3 back in 2019 with 64k miles. I opted for the Premium Plus model with the virtual cockpit, Quattro and the B&O sound system (which is a must-have; I wouldn't buy it without it). This car is a beast, and the AWD makes it incredibly quick off the line. There are very few cars that can beat me off the line, and I absolutely love it. It's also incredibly sturdy. My fiance accidentally ran over a metal support beam on the highway in the middle of the desert at over 80mph (think building support) while I was asleep, and the car handled it like a champ. There was a huge thud, and the tire light came on. We pulled over and saw that the beam had knocked out both tires and cracked the rear rim. Despite all of this, she was able to maintain control of the car as if nothing had happened. I got a flat tire when I was racing someone at 155mph (stage 1 removed the governor) and the car handled it with ease. I now have 138k miles on the car and have had only minor issues. The first was a leaking fluid reservoir ($20 from the Audi dealership) and a misfire issue due to a bad spark plug. The only thing I have a complaint about is the start/stop system. It's very jerky.. not sure how they messed that up. Stage 1 upgrade has it disabled on startup, and I never turn it on. Also, start/stop apparently doesn't care too much about battery drain as my battery has died twice while parked. One more thing... Oddly, if the start/stop is activated and the car is 'off', taking off the seatbelt stops it from turning back on. This is especially dangerous in traffic, and the car doesn't do a good job of letting you know why it all of a sudden won't start again! Very poor design on Audi's part. Other than that, the car is amazing. I have people offering to buy it off of me weekly. With all of the miles the car has now, I drive it less because I feel like I'm pushing my luck. It still pulls as hard as it ever did, and everything works flawlessly. Maintenance has always been cheap. It's great to hear that you're enjoying your German vehicle so much! I would definitely recommend this car to anyone looking for a new ride. It sounds like you're a big fan of this car, and I can understand why. If you're ever in the market for a new car, the RS3 is definitely worth considering!

  5. Maximillian Reinger 2024-07-19

I recently traded in my beloved 2017 VW Golf for a new glacier white A3, as my wife does not drive manual. Although I was hesitant at first, we both fell in love with the vehicle after picking it up. It is undeniably one of the best-looking cars we have ever seen, and it drives like a dream - refined and zippy when you need it to be. I have found that the mpg figure is actually better than EPA estimates, which is a pleasant surprise. As a fairly conservative driver, I am hoping to keep this car for the next 10+ years. nnAfter driving the car for over 6 months and putting about 3000 miles on it, my wife and I both agree that we love driving it more than our SUV. Although we use the SUV more when traveling with our baby, this car is perfect for day trips where we don't need to carry a lot of stuff around other than the stroller. It's worth noting that if you are taller than 5'7
