1991 Audi 100 problems
The Audi 100 and Audi 200 (and sometimes called Audi 5000 in North America) are primarily mid-size/executive cars manufactured and marketed by the Audi division of the Volkswagen Group. The car was made from 1968 to 1997 across four generations (C1–C4), with a two-door model available in the first and second generation (C1-C2), and a five-door model available in the last three generations (C2–C4).
In 1982, the third generation Audi 100 achieved a remarkably low (for its time) drag coefficient of 0.30, featuring flush greenhouse sides with unique sliding window mountings.
The C2 and C3 models of the Audi 100 were marketed in North America as the Audi 5000 from 1978 to 1988, and in South Africa as the Audi 500.
In 1993, the models were mildly restyled, and renamed the Audi A6 series in conjunction with a general new Audi naming scheme, until they were replaced by a new generation of A6, internally code-named C5, in 1997. The Audi 100's traditional competitors include the Mercedes Benz E-Class and BMW 5-Series.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 1999-06-25
- VIN: WAUBC5446MN
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: THE CAR IS CURRENTLY NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. ON JUNE 25TH I DROVE THE CAR FOR 40 MINUTES ON THE HIGHWAY. WHEN I EXITED THE HIGHWAY, THE ENGINE WOULD RACE WHEN I CAME TO A STOP LIGHT. THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED AND THE CAR WAS AT A COMPLETE STOP, BUT THE ENGINE WOULD RACE SO THAT THE SPEEDOMETER REGISTERED 50 MILES PER HOURS. WHEN I RELEASED THE BRAKES TO PROCEED THROUGH THE LIGHT, THE CAR IMMEDIATELY SPED OFF AT NEARLY FIFTY MILES PER HOUR. I DID NOT APPLY THE GAS PEDAL AT ALL. I HAD NO CONTROL OVER THE CAR. IT WAS NOT SHIFTING INTO LOWER GEAR. IT WAS RACING, EVEN WHEN THE CAR WAS PUT INTO PARK. SINCE THAT TIME, I HAVE TRIED TO START UP THE CAR ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. EVERY TIME THE ENGINE RACES AS SOON AS THE CAR IS TURNED ON. WHEN IN PARK THE SPEEDOMETER REGISTERS UP TO 60 MILES PER HOUR AND MUST BE IMMEDIATELY TURNED OFF. I CANNOT DRIVE THE CAR. I CALLED AUDI TO COMPLAIN, BUT THEY INFORMED ME THAT THERE HAD NOT BEEN A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM ON MY MODEL. OTHER AUDI OWNERS HAVE TOLD ME THAT THIS PROBLEM IS VERY COMMON AND THAT DRIVERS HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED. WHEN I FIRST PURCHASED THE CAR, I BROUGHT IT IN BECAUSE OF A SLIGHT SHIFTING PROBLEM. THE CAR WOULD STUTTER A BIT BEFORE SHIFTING GEARS. THE DEALER SAID THEY HAD FIXED THE PROBLEM. IT SEEMS AS THOUGH IT HAS ONLY BECOME MORE SEVERE. I HAVE ONLY PUT ABOUT 10,000 MILES ON THE CAR IN THE 2 YEARS SINCE I BOUGHT IT. THE CAR IS WELL MAINTAINED. THIS PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT.

I have owned this Audi for over 5 years now. I purchased it used with 122,000 miles on the clock and it now has over 200,000 miles. This is my second Audi and I absolutely love it. It has been an extremely reliable car and a pleasure to drive, making it the perfect workhorse commuter car. Despite being parked outside in all 4 seasons, the interior remains tight and dry and still smells faintly new. The body and finish are near perfect with no rust or corrosion anywhere thanks to its galvanized body. All seals are perfect and the original starter, alternator, radiator, heater core, etc. are still in place. I have only had to change the oil, brakes, tires, filters, belts, and light bulbs. It has never leaked any fluids and continues to start every time and run smoothly and reliably. It gets about 21 MPG in a city/highway mix.

For such an old car, you've really lucked out! The interior is absolutely gorgeous and it feels like a luxury car, but without the hefty price tag. Sure, there have been a few electrical glitches, but those are pretty common in this model. Overall, I'd say you've got yourself a great deal. In fact, if I were you, I'd consider buying another one - maybe even a Quattro!

This car is great on gas and very reliable. Although I've had some issues with the fuel pump and electrical system, it still runs like a champ! I'm amazed that even with the miles, it drives so well. I make the trip from North Carolina to Baltimore twice a month and it never disappoints. With a full tank of gas, I can even ride around Baltimore for about 200 more miles before refueling. How cool is that?!
