The Kia Sorento (Korean: 기아 쏘렌토, romanized: Gia Sorento) is a series of automobiles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 2002 through four generations. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second-generation Sorento transitioned to a larger car-based platform which placed it into the mid-size crossover SUV class, and has been developed alongside the Hyundai Santa Fe.

First generation (BL; 2002)

2002–2006

Debuting in February 2002, the first generation Sorento was a traditional truck-based body-on-frame SUV. All American Sorentos also came with dual front airbags and dual side-curtain airbags in the front and rear. An optional four-wheel drive system with low range received praise for adding to the vehicle's off-road ability.

It had two transmission options, a 5-speed manual or 4- and 5-speed automatic (pre-2005 models have a 4-speed automatic, whilst 2005 Sorentos came with a 5-speed tip-tronic style automatic). First generation Sorentos are equipped with a Hyundai-manufactured 3.5-liter 24-valve DOHC V6 engine producing 192 hp (143 kW) at 5500 rpm, and 217 lb⋅ft (294 N⋅m) of torque at 3,000 rpm. Common features of the first generation Sorento were 4-wheel disc brakes (standard on all models), optional anti-lock braking system (ABS), and a 21.1-gallon (79.9 litres) fuel tank.

There were two trim levels available for the Sorento: either the base LX or the up-level EX. Both models included an AM/FM stereo with a single-disc CD player and an eight-speaker audio system, dual front airbags and front and rear side-impact SRS airbags (side-impact front and rear SRS airbags for North American-market models ONLY), cloth seating surfaces, a power-adjustable front driver's seat, air conditioning, power door locks and windows, tinted windows, aluminum-alloy wheels, keyless entry, wood interior trim accents, a split-folding second-row rear bench seat, and monotone exterior paint as standard equipment. Features such as satellite radio (on later models), leather-trimmed seating surfaces, heated front seats, a ten-speaker premium audio system, cassette and CD players, an in-dash CD changer, power front bucket seats, seventeen-inch (17") aluminum-alloy wheels, a power sunroof, two-tone exterior paint, and a security system were available regardless of trim level choice.

Common 2015 Kia Sorento problems

The 2015 Kia Sorento has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. This can be a significant inconvenience and expense for owners.

Another issue that has been reported is with the cargo hatch struts, which can fail and cause the cargo door to fall unexpectedly. This can be a safety hazard and may require replacement of the struts.

The 2015 Kia Sorento has also been reported to have engine and transmission issues, which can be more serious and expensive to repair. Some owners have reported engine stalling without warning, excessive shaking, or the engine light blinking right before the car shuts off.

Transmission issues have also been reported, with some owners experiencing shaking under acceleration or hearing a "popping sound" while driving. In some cases, technicians have been unable to replicate the issue, which can make it difficult to diagnose and repair.

In addition to these issues, the 2015 Kia Sorento has also been reported to have fuel leaks, a hesitating transmission, and fire-prone hydraulic electronic control units. These issues can be serious and may require extensive repairs or replacement of parts.

Overall, while the 2015 Kia Sorento has many positive qualities, it is important for prospective buyers to be aware of these common problems and to have any vehicle they are considering inspected by a qualified mechanic before purchasing. It is also recommended to run the VIN to find out about any open recalls the vehicle may have.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-05
  • VIN: 5XYKWDA70FG
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: What component or system failed or malfunctioned? The engine began leaking hot air bubbles into the cooling system, causing hot coolant to leak into the harness and parts of the car. Is it available for inspection upon request? No, the manufacturer has responded that it does not cover the warranty because it is in another country, although the brand is present there. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? When heating the system there is a risk of burst hoses or catastrophic damage to the systems when driving and therefore risk of explosion or fire. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by an independent dealer or service center? Yes, through an independent service center in the country where the vehicle is currently located. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Mechanical technicians state that it is a factory defect. Were there warning lights, messages or other symptoms of the problem before the failure and when did they first appear? No warnings, just hot coolant splashing onto the engine. Kia Sorento is a family vehicle, which we could not enjoy due to engine failures. Considering the timely maintenance, the brand must respond for the risk we ran by driving a vehicle with a catastrophic engine failure.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-12-01
  • VIN: 5XYKW4A71FG
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: In 2020, we started noticing the smell of engine coolant and the continuous running of the engine fan after shutting the engine off. The temperature gage never indicated any issue. We took the vehicle to the dealer to address the issue. Upon inspecting the vehicle, it was determined that there was a failure of one of the engine block bolts, which cause the coolant to seep in to the engine block. The dealer stated the engine needed to be rebuilt, because the bock was not salvageable. We then contacted Kia to question the failure and were told that the repair was not covered, because of the milage on the vehicle. In 2024 we received a recall notice, which stated they were now taking responsibility for the repairs and all we needed to do was submit documents showing the repairs were made. We did so, two months ago, however after submitting the documents Kia has not given us a reimbursement or provided updates on the status of our claim.

I ordered high powered LED bulbs and still the low beams are very dim. So dim you can barely see 10 feet in front of you when driving at night. I have to drive with the high beams on to see where I am going. Research online shows this is an issues with the projector type headlights on these vehicle but no recall is there. The headlight are over $600 to replace for an off brand set. Not something that should be going bad on a 2015 car.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-09
  • VIN: 5XYKWDA72FG
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I previously reported an engine complained submitted on 9/14/2023, ID 11544548. My engine started knocking while I was driving on a major highway without any warning lights or indications. a claim to Kia was made as I was told by the Kia dealership I would need engine replacement however Kia offered no explanation as to why the engine failed nor any explanation or seemed to care one bit that I was on a major highway and this occurred without any warnings whatsoever. I understand there is current recall for some v4 engines of the sorento model I had and I firmly believe the 3.3L v6 engines should be investigated.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-01

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-01
  • VIN: 5XYKT4A68FG
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: My car has been giving me problems for about three months now and we’ve changed about four or five parts on the engine/transmission and it’s still acting up. We’ve called the Kia dealership several times to alleviate the problem but they are giving us the runaround about the three recalls that pulled up for the 2015 Kia Sorrento and they saying that we have to pay $150 for diagnostic per recall, which I don’t understand that if it’s not our fault then they should cover the diagnostic and the recall. We’ve contacted them on several occasions about the situation with my brake lights being on after I turn my car off and they stay on until my battery is almost dead. They don’t want to fix the HECU I believe the electric short that Kia have been experiencing. This car is the worst car I’ve ever had. I’ve never had to experience anything close to what I’m experiencing with Kia. They are an absolute disgrace it’s almost like they’re trying to pocket diagnostic money for themselves because there’s no way I have to pay almost $500 for three recalls, that’s no fault of our own. If I had the money to get another car, I would. They told us that we can trade it in if we come with a higher down payment, but I’m not able to do that right now so I’m just trying to get my car fixed until I’m able to do so. Please help us get our car fixed and the recalls serviced because Andrew at Kia Country of Savannah sounds like he’s irritated because we’re trying to get down to the bottom of them getting the recalls done. It’s like he’s just telling us anything to try to avoid doing the recalls. They also stated that when the car was dropped off, they didn’t find anything pertaining to the recalls whether y’all find anything or not you know that there are recalls for that particular car just fix it. Please help. We are not gonna stop until the car is fixed. I’m gonna keep reaching out. I’m gonna keep calling up there to see when it can be done because it’s costing us money that we don’t have.

STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-31
  • VIN: 5XYKWDA75FG
  • Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Large paint chips on hood and passenger door frame near windshield. Smaller paint chips along hood. Looks almost like an eggshell cracking and just started happening in the last couple of months.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-24
  • VIN: 5XYKWDA73FG
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The car started shaking, it slowed down and stopped and all the lights on the dashboard came on and there was a loud sound and I turned the car off. I called towing, got my car back and took it back to the dealership. At the dealership they checked the car and called the warranty company who sent an inspector... The Ethos group told me that there were some errors in the report and that they still couldn't give me information, after two weeks the dealership called me and told me the warranty denied the claim. The denial claim said it was the coolant hoses that caused the engine problem and overheating, but I bought the car from the dealership when it had 85,063 miles on it and it hadn't even passed the year when the engine blown off and the car had 100,381 miles and has regular maintenance at the dealer. Before any lights came on on the dashboard it started shaking and slowing down and all the lights were on... how can they said the car overheated but no light of warning?

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-13
  • VIN: 5XYKTDA7XFG
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: We were driving our car and it all of a sudden just stopped working. We luckily were able to pull over before it stopped completely, no noise, jerk motion or anything the engine just stopped. We had it towed to a mechanic who said our engine blew. It only had 140,000 miles on it but the repair/replacement we were quoted would have cost us more than the vehicle was even worth so we ended up having the car junked.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-18
  • VIN: 5XYKU4A70FG
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My car died when I stopped. No warning lights, no warning whatsoever. I had to push my car out of traffic. I was able to start it again after a couple minutes but immediately a knocking sound started. I was encouraged to get an oil analysis by my mechanic friend in which it states my oil is fine and describes the metal found in the oil and where it likely came from.

Negative 2015 Kia Sorento car reviews

  1. Justus Reinger 2024-11-18

The vehicle boasts good power, however, the short wheelbase may cause some instability on the highway. The steering may require frequent correction. Overall, the vehicle's performance is commendable.

  2. Domenic Reynolds 2024-10-13

I recently experienced two unexpected and costly failures with my Sorento SX. After the winter in southern Ontario, the A/C was not working and it turned out that the lower compressor discharge hose had leaked refrigerant, which was a costly repair of around $1000 for diagnosis and repair at the dealership. When I contacted Kia Canada, I was disappointed to learn that they do not offer any Good Will warranty. Within a week, I experienced a catastrophic shutdown due to a malfunctioning alternator. Unfortunately, the dash indicator did not light up or was barely visible, and there is no battery gauge to monitor the voltage. I was able to reach a safe location, but it was a stressful experience. Although I have owned many vehicles with much higher mileage and age, I was surprised that the A/C and alternator failed at around 100,000km. I have had A/C systems last over 200,000km and alternators last the lifetime of the vehicle. It was frustrating that the manufacturer did not offer any support, even though my warranty had expired. Both repairs were costly and required expensive towing. I would recommend getting CAA Plus to save on towing costs. Unfortunately, the Canadian Tire alternator was not compatible with the Sorento, so I had to get another one from CarQuest. Overall, I have noticed a decline in the quality and durability of their vehicles, which is disappointing given the low mileage of my Sorento.

  3. Norbert Stark 2024-09-10

The 2015 Sorento LX FWD is an attractive SUV for anyone looking for a reliable and affordable option. While it may not be the top choice for those seeking a more masculine design, the Limited model offers a more premium feel. The interior features some hard plastics, but the back up camera and sensors work great, and the instrument cluster looks amazing with its red and white display. The wood-look accents on the doors add a touch of elegance, but the same cannot be said for the dashboard or center console. It's worth noting that the gas needle and range to empty may not always be accurate, as some drivers have reported discrepancies. Overall, the Sorento LX FWD is a solid choice for those in the market for a mid-size SUV.

  4. Ewell Abshire 2024-05-03

Hey there! I wanted to share my experience with my Kia SUV. Unfortunately, after 80,000 miles, the rear differential went out and it's costing me $3775 to get it replaced. It's a bummer that it's no longer under warranty, but I was able to get a loan to cover the cost. Just wanted to give you a heads up so you can make an informed decision. Take care!

  5. Ari Goyette 2024-02-01

My 2015 Sorento has been experiencing some issues lately, including a problem with the timing chain at 145,000km. However, I am confident in my decision to fix it and continue driving my Kia. While every vehicle may have its own unique set of challenges, I believe that Kia is a reliable brand overall and I stand by my choice to own one.

It looks like an SUV, but handles like a mini-van. I use it for Uber, so it works well. My passengers really appreciate the roomy back seat. I love the cargo space, which I use for an ice chest full of water. I do wish I could select entertainment in both directions, but that's a minor issue. Overall, I'm really happy that I bought it.

Thanks to Edmunds, they led me to Clay Cooley to find this great car at a good buy. The staff was very helpful. Thank you for such a positive buying experience.

I really enjoyed the Sorento so much that I decided to purchase another pre-owned one, this time a step up to the top-of-the-line SXL model. The HID headlamps are even better, and I can now see clearly at night. Although the fuel economy is still a minor complaint at 19 mpg in mixed driving, at least it takes regular unleaded. I'm also loving the heated steering wheel. In my experience, the rear brake pads or rotors need replacing quite often, about every 20k miles, but as long as you keep up with the recommended maintenance, it will last a long time.

I'm so glad to hear that you've been taking such good care of your SUV! It's amazing that after 7 years and 75k miles, it's still running great. I'm sure it will continue to serve you well for many more years to come. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!
