The Acura TL is a car that was manufactured by Acura, the luxury division of Honda. First generation (UA1–UA3; 1996–1998)
The TL "Touring Luxury" debuted as 1996 model, first with the 1996 2.5 TL available with the 2.5 L 176 hp (131 kW) SOHC 20-valve 5-cylinder engine from the Vigor. The 3.2 TL used the 3.2 L 200 hp (149 kW) SOHC 24v V6 from the second generation Acura Legend. The model with the 2.0-liter inline-five was not offered in the US market. The debut of the TL signaled Acura's shift from traditional vehicle names to alphanumeric designations. By replacing recognizable names such as Vigor and Legend with a two-letter designation, the luxury maker hoped to focus consumer attention on the Acura name. The TL was the first Acura model to adopt the new naming scheme.
The 2.5 TL was positioned as the sporty model and the 3.2 focused more upon a luxurious ride. There were minimal styling differences between the two, but the 3.2 TL had larger tires despite the 2.5 TL's more sporty marketing. Moreover, the added power in the 3.2 TL gave it better acceleration. Both engines were mounted in a front-rear, or longitudinal position. This contrasted with the more typical transverse engine mount style, and was intended to provide better weight distribution and reduce nose dive. The engine mount design resulted in an elongated hood for the first generation TL, a shorter front overhang and longer wheelbase, fitting for a near-luxury car. The inline-5 engine in the 2.5 TL competed with similar 5-cylinder engines offered in Audi and Volvo models.
The first 1996 Acura TL was manufactured at Sayama, Japan on March 28, 1995. Sales of the 2.5 TL began in spring 1995, but the 3.2 TL was delayed until fall because of a U.S.-Japan trade dispute. The U.S. government had threatened to impose 100% tariffs on higher-priced Japanese cars in response a growing U.S.-Japan trade deficit. Ultimately a deal was reached which avoided the tariffs.
The first generation Acura TL had standard features including dual airbags, antilock brakes, automatic climate control, a cassette/CD player sound system, and power windows and locks. Leather was standard on the more upscale 3.2 TL, while the 2.5 TL featured a firmer suspension setup. Like its predecessor, the Vigor, this generation TL was a 4-door pillared hardtop, with frameless windows.

Upon further review of the circumstances regarding the issue, we were unable to find any open campaigns pertaining to this matter (e.g., safety recall, warranty extension or product update). Have you had a chance to reach out to your local preferred Honda dealership to make them aware of the issue? If not, the skilled Service Department at our dealerships are in the best position to evaluate your vehicle and determine the best available corrective action. We encourage you to contact the Service Department of your preferred (Honda/Acura) dealership for assistance with a diagnosis. Your case will be closed at this time, pending further information." Although I will follow up with my local service department I am confused/concerned that given the impact on airbag deployment and the number of complaints that I have found that NHTSA has not issued a recall to repair the dash and reinstall the airbags. - Summary: Dorman Products, Inc. (Dorman) is recalling certain Accelerator Pedal Assemblies part numbers 699-114 and 825-5029-1, sold as replacement parts for 2003-2006 Acura MDX, 2004-2008 Acura TL and TSX, 2003-2007 Honda Accord, 2005-2006 Honda CR-V, 2007-2011 Honda Element, 2005-2008 Honda Pilot and 2006-2014 Honda Ridgeline vehicles. The rotating portion of the accelerator pedal assembly may bind. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 124, "Accelerator Control Systems."
- Consequence: If the accelerator pedal binds, the engine may not quickly return to idle after the pedal is no longer pressed, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dorman will notify owners, and qualified service facilities will replace the affected accelerator pedal assemblies, free of charge. The recall began December 9, 2019. Owners may contact Dorman customer service at 1-800-523-2492, using option 5. Dorman's number for this recall is AS1019XXXX.

The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 625,762. Prolonged under-hood and power steering fluid temperatures may cause the power steering hose to deteriorate prematurely, resulting in cracks and power steering fluid leakage.
- Consequence: If this occurs, power steering fluid can leak onto a hot catalytic converter, leading to smoke and possibly an under-hood fire.
- Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will install a new heat resistant power steering hose, free of charge. The original recall began in June 2012, and owners of those vehicles may obtain the free remedy. Sufficient parts are not yet available for owners of the vehicles covered by the September 2012 expansion, but are expected to be available in early 2013. Honda will notify owners of these vehicles beginning on October 26, 2012, and will notify these owners again when parts are available so those vehicles can be brought to dealers for applications of the free remedy. I searched extensively before deciding on the TL. I wanted a dependable, athletic sedan that wouldn't break the bank. Unfortunately, there were very few options that met my criteria. In fact, there were almost none. Initially, I was only considering new cars, but as my search continued, I began to explore certified pre-owned vehicles and even luxury brands. I purchased my TL 18 months ago, and although I have a few minor grievances, I am extremely satisfied with my decision.

Great car for performance and great mileage! It gets 30 mpg on the highway at 70 miles per hour.

I test drove the BMW 335i and was very impressed, but after driving the new TL Type S, I couldn't resist buying it for $10,000 less than the BMW! It's a great looking car, very fast, and has tech features that are next to none. Yes, there is some torque steer, but it's nothing I can't live with. The biggest adjustment for me was getting used to the firmer sports seat compared to the BMW 7 series I was driving, but I guess that was unavoidable. If you're looking for a well-built, safe, sporty sedan with high-tech options, this is the car for you. The Bluetooth, voice-activated Nav, and DVD 5.1 audio are incredible!!

I have been a proud owner of Hondas and Acuras for over 30 years and I can confidently say that these are very fine automobiles. Although I have been a Honda man for over 10 years, it was a girlfriend who introduced me to Acuras and it has been a beautiful partnership for the past 20 years. Recently, I was involved in an accident that resulted in my car hitting a tree and tipping over. Thanks to the Acura's quality, I was able to make it out of the car without a scratch. I am grateful to God for watching over me on that day and I am also thankful for having the wisdom to purchase one of the best-built cars on the market. Thank you Honda/Acura.

My car has the same problem as my other Acuras. Both this 2007 model and my 1999 TL have experienced issues with the EVP canister purge valve, which Acura acknowledged in a service bulletin back in 2003. It's disappointing that Acura did not address this issue during the manufacturing process, as it would have been a simple and inexpensive fix. Instead, they continue to charge around $500 for the repair at their dealerships. Additionally, the 6-speed manual transmission in my car has the same problem as my son's 2000 RXS with 3rd gear. This is another example of poor engineering from Acura. It's frustrating that these issues still exist in a 2007 model, despite Acura being aware of them since 2001.

We purchased our 2007 Acura TL Type S a year ago for $20,000, hoping to get a quality product from a great company. Unfortunately, this summer we noticed that the dashboard had started to crack in two places, which we later found out is a common issue for Acura TLs from 04 to 08. We reached out to Acura to try to resolve the issue, but unfortunately, they were not able to assist us due to our lack of loyalty to the brand. As someone who has owned three Acuras, I was disappointed by their response. We would caution against purchasing an Acura based on our experience.

I purchased my second TL and encountered an issue with the air conditioner that likely occurred while the warranty was still valid, but was not detectable until after the warranty expired. Despite this, Acura refused to honor the warranty until I paid the dealer a $100 diagnostic fee. As a confident customer, I expect Acura to stand behind their products and honor their warranties without hesitation.

I've owned 3 TLs and while this one has some issues, I'm disappointed with the quality. The transmission is quite loud and the engine is ticking. The ride is also quite stiff. However, the TL is still a great value for the money. If you're planning on taking long trips in the car, you may want to consider other options. It's important to keep in mind that everyone's preferences are different. Thank you for considering my experience.
